TRAFFIC leading to Stadium Merdeka where Canadian pop princess Avril Lavigne performed her The Black Star Tour Live in Kuala Lumpur last Saturday, was a snarl. With more than 10,000 people flocking to the concert venue and a large number of Lavigne’s fans queuing at the entrance since afternoon, it was easy to feel the excitement.

The show started at 8.30pm, with Avril making an appearance in black skinny tights and a sleeveless top to thunderous applause. She kicked off the show with Black Star, a song from her latest album, Goodbye Lullaby.

It was, quite simply, a cool show. The simple stage was swathed in dazzling lights that suited the mood of the evening. With two giant screens on the sides, fans did not feel like they were missing anything.
She was accompanied by her band who had been working with her since 2007. They are Al Berry (on bass), Rodney Howard (drums and percussion), Steve Ferlazzo (electronic keyboard), Jim McGorman (rhythm guitar) and Steve Fekete (lead guitar).

Avril maintained a frenetic pace from the beginning of the show with a selection of fast numbers, many of which were huge hits and naturally struck a chord with the audience. These included WTH and Sk8er Boi, her hit single from her debut album Let Go, which had the fans dancing and singing along to the infectious beat. (“He was a skater boy/She said see ya later boy/He wasn’t good enough for her/Now he’s a superstar/Slammin on his guitar/Does your pretty face see what he’s worth?”)

Things eased up for the next performance, with the stage bathed in soft pink lighting for the radio hit bubblegum pop tune, Girlfriend. The catchy song is about a girl who likes a boy and hopes to be a replacement for his girlfriend.

Naturally, the crowd jumped for joy to the familiar sing-along tune: “Hey, hey, you, you, I don’t like your girlfriend/No way, no way, I think you need a new one/Hey, hey, you, you, I could be your girlfriend!”
When Avril performed slow numbers such as When You’re Gone and I’m With You, she tugged at the heartstrings with her earnestness. She’s experienced a broken heart, so she sang from a dark place deep inside her. It was easy for her fans to feel her pain and anguish.

Things got sappy or saccharinely sweet (depending on how you want to look at it) as couples held hands and heart-shaped balloons floated in the air... you get the drift. Later Avril wished her fans good night and thanked them for coming, only to return with encore performances after the usual “We want more!” chant. True to (dramatic) fashion, she came back on with her popular songs I Love You and Complicated.

Avril sang a total of 17 songs including I Always Get What I Want, Alice, Unwanted, Don’t Tell Me and Smile from her studio album Let Go, Under My Skin, The Best Damn Thing and Goodbye Lullaby.
Although it was a fine concert with great atmosphere, it said nothing extra about Avril other than reaffirmed her place as a recording artiste. Those expecting to see an entertainer were disappointed as she only sang and occasionally played the guitar.

Malaysia was the last stop for the tour after the Philippines and China. The concert was held in conjunction with the release of Goodbye Lullaby last March. With songs written by Avril, the album went on to debut in the top five positions in over 15 countries such as the United States and Canada, topping charts in Japan, Australia, Germany, Greece, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong and the Czech Republic.

Avril broke into the music scene at 17 with her album Let Go. The album made Avril the youngest female soloist to reach No. 1 in the United Kingdom, and the album was certified four-time platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. The Black Star Tour was presented by Tune Talk and organised by JS Concert Productions.

IT WAS raining but most of the people who had congregated at the front of the stage at Stadium Merdeka last Saturday night did not seem to mind as they waited for Avril Lavigne to arrive. I sat at the stands and thought of how I had been an ardent fan of the punk rock queen back in my teenage years right from her debut album, Let Go.

I would sing along to her songs, covet her posters in music stores and wish I had the chance to see her perform live. That night, as the crowd roared and cheered to prompt Lavigne out from backstage, I felt their excitement and enthusiasm. My heart cheered along when the star finally appeared after DJ Nadine’s opening set. I was momentarily transported back in time.

Lavigne bounded onstage and began the last night of her Black Star Tour with What the Hell from her fourth and latest album, Goodbye Lullaby. The crowd went ballistic. It did not matter how near or far they were from the stage; Lavigne’s voice rang out loud and clear into the night sky against the glow sticks waving in the air. The energy level was already seething among the crowd when she played the all-time-favourite Sk8er Boi next before picking up her glittery bright pink guitar and jammed to He Wasn’t.

The crowd got even louder and more frenzied when she performed the defiant I Always Get What I Want and Alice. The teenage angst and rebellion just spilled out at Lavigne’s command. Everyone seemed to know the lyrics to all the songs she belted out that night.

Their zeal and adoration for the Canadian singer-songwriter were evident as they sang along at the top of their lungs to When You’re Gone and Wish You Were Here. Lavigne took a break while her band kept the crowd entertained with melodies of familiar songs from her albums.

Before anybody could miss her, she bounded back in a black sleeveless printed tee and black leather pants to perform the addictively-upbeat Girlfriend. We thought the night had ended when she bowed and ran off backstage after singing I’m with You with the crowd. In fact, people were already trickling to the exit doors.

But those who had been standing at the back surged forward through the barrier in hopes of catching a last (closer) glimpse of their idol. Their resilience and persistence were greatly rewarded that night as their incessant pleas for an encore drew Lavigne and her band out.

The star then proceeded to treat the remaining crowd with a special treat – a cover of Foster the People’s Pumped Up Kicks – before disappearing and reappearing again to perform I Love You.

The night came to an end with roaring cheers and rousing applause as she belted out her breakthrough single, Complicated. It was the perfect ending with that one song everybody knew and that which had put Lavigne in our hearts. As she lamented “no, no, no”, we too lamented when the stage darkened for the last time, marking the end of the singer’s Black Star Tour.

Yes, the Smart Araneta Coliseum was not filled to its full capacity in one drizzling Thursday night in February, and the usual audio problems of the venue seemed endless. But the night was still that memorable. Why? Avril Lavigne's sheer talent and her pop rock journey through the years made the "Black Star Tour Live in Manila" utterly enjoyable.

You can see that in the eyes of Avril's Filipino "Black Stars" or her avid fans of eight-year-olds to the early twentysomething females and their clueless companions of fathers, husbands and boyfriends. And how they shrieked and even cried with each lyric uttered in the setlist of 17 songs.

While the evening had been neutralized musically with the electronic pop-infused Somedaydream or the boy-next-door sensation Rez Toledo as the front act, Avril brought the house down with her energetic and wild renditions of her biggest hits.

No, don't expect the grandiose production seen in recent months, such as Katy Perry's "California Dreams" and Kylie Minogue's "Aphrodite" tours that left audiences in awe. Avril's sleeveless black shirt and matching leggings and boots say it all. It was all intimate; striking Avril's discography to its core—leaving the audience to what really mattered, her music that made all her worldwide success possible.

Her music is basically relatable and catchy—factors that make her otherwise heavy yet upbeat songs strike a chord among her "Black Stars."From "Black Star," "Alice" (from the hit Disney movie) and "What the Hell" from her latest album "Goodbye Lullaby" to her earlier hits "Sk8ter Boi," "He Wasn't" and "I Always Get What I Want," Avril again impressed everyone with her savvy personal songwriting.

Her haunting and deep ballads "When You're Gone" and "Wish You Were Here" made the audience feel for her, as the most hurtful chapters in her life—especially that painful divorce from ex-husband and fellow musician Deryck Whibley in 2010—clearly showed in her moving renditions.

These showcased what is clearly an underrated element in her success since her debut as a teen pop rocker in the early 2000s—her powerful and intense vocal prowess that was pure and riveting. In fact, her voice remained unruffled and fresh throughout the more than two-hour show.

And never did the audience show exasperation. All remained excited and supporting, cheering Avril on and chanting the monster hit "Girlfriend" from her 2007 album "The Best Damn Thing," "My Happy Ending", which followed a short cover of B.o.B's "Airplanes" and "Don't Tell Me," which are all from the album "Under My Skin," Avril's second album that was released in 2004.

After losing their voice singing along to "Smile" and "I Love You" again from "Goodbye Lullaby" and her earlier hits "I'm With You," the audience were in high spirits as Avril capped it all off with the song she described as her most special, her first single "Complicated," also her encore.

Though the average concertgoer might have wanted more in terms of production elements and creativity—like striking video to complement and present her journey as a musician, or more interaction with the audience—what we saw is simply Avril, who as singer and songwriter is more than just a show, but an artist who will never be forgotten for her craft, her music.

KUALA LUMPUR - Canadian pop superstar Avril Lavigne took the stage at Stadium Merdeka and wowed a 14,000-strong crowd with her infectious tunes and explosive energy. The petite 28-year old performed about 17 of her hit songs, including favorites such as My Happy Ending, When You're Gone and Complicated as well as What The Hell and Smile from her recent Goodbye Melody album.

"Hey Kuala Lumpur!" Lavigne shouted cheerfully as she first appeared on stage, waving a green star shaped glowstick. "Are you ready?," she asked at her concert last night. Her three-song encore also featured a surprise performance of Foster The People's Pumped Up Kicks performed by one of her band members. This is the singer's second visit to Malaysia.

Bringing her punk rocker ways to the Land Down Under, Avril Lavigne showed off a sexy side for the cover of the March 2012 issue of FHM Australia. The 27-year-old Canadian posed in a hot purple Abbey Dawn dress for the Kenneth Cappello shot front page while talking about everything from her athletic prowess to her tour bus culinary skills. Highlights from Miss Lavigne's interview are as follows. For more, be sure to check out FHM Australia!

On why her clothing line is named Abbey Dawn:
"Because I'm Abbey Dawn: it was my nickname when I was growing up and it was the first alias I used when I didn't want people to know which hotel I was staying at."

On the best party she's ever had:
"It was a girly holiday in St. Tropez. I have my French passport and a lot of French friends and family, so last summer my friends and I went. It was the ultimate fun riot."

On her cooking specialty went on tour:
"I make a lot of salads with homemade salad dressing and I can do some good vegan soups, but to be honest I can make anything. I can make Italian."

On her athletic talent:
"I have always been very athletic. Nowadays, I love to skateboard, rollerblade, play hockey, work out and do yoga. But when I was growing up in Canada I used to play softball in the summer, ice hockey in the winter and do track and field all year. My brother and I were the best in our school at track and field, I was the pitcher at softball and I played either center or right wing in my mixed hockey team."
