Angela: It’s not big and it’s not clever and nobody’s impressed

The last couple of days we’ve walked through beautiful countryside and seen pretty villages. One blight on this landscape is the 4X4.

Our loo stop this morning was in a village hall while a mother and toddlers groups were meeting. What was most noticeable was that half the cars in the car park were 4X4s.

Generally parents want to give their children the best start in life but these parents, whether unknowingly or not, are giving the exact opposite of what their children really need - introducing them to an ever more oil dependent lifestyle, one that will certainly destroy life on this planet before their children grow old.

At last night’s meeting there was a man from BP who spoke of its interest in biofuels. It was pointed out to him that biofuels take more energy to produce than they yield and that it reduces land available for crops.

He responded that BP was in the oil business and that consumer demand led its work. There was no sign of UK consumers turning away from oil even though he recognised that oil would not last forever.

And so we return to the parents and their 4X4s and the choices they are making for their children’s future. The problem of consumer demand!

BBC Website: Marchers reach Surrey

Mohamed: Rosalia and I took part in the climate clinic at the Labour Party conference in Bournemouth. Before the meeting we met Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

We talked with him about the campaign and the campaign asks; I challenged him to seize the opportunity that he has to save the planet from the biggest threat it is facing – climate change.

I shared with him the fact that the UK has a big influence in world politics which he can employ positively to save the planet.

I told him the opportunity starts with the Labour Party strengthening the current Climate Change Bill before Parliament by increasing the target up to at least 80 per cent and by obliging businesses to reveal their carbon emissions. This would set an example for the rest of the world.

Gordon Brown told me the UK has set an example in the past with debt cancellation and that his government was aware of the Christian Aid and I Count campaign but he didn’t commit himself beyond that.

Then we had a panel with MPs and activists, chaired by the director of WDM, Benedict Southworth and the chairman of the IPPC, Dr Rajendra Pauchavri.

We shared the experiences of how the poor in Kenya and El Salvador are affected by climate change.

We showed them that climate change is real, it’s really happening; it is the poor of the world, who are the smallest emitters of greenhouse gases, who are the most affected by the carbon pollution of the developed industrialised countries like the UK.

See the photo here of us meeting Gordon Brown.

Next stop: Join us for events in Alton, Farnham, Worplesdon, Mayford, Woking and Esher.

Neil: On Thursday, in Shaftesbury, we walked down Gold Hill, the cobbled street made famous by the Hovis ads which was great.

Later, we nearly had a disaster when one of the electric vans began to smoke. There was a short in one of the wires, everyone quickly emptied the van of its contents and by the end we were surrounded by a confusion of suitcases!

Simon and I were surrounded by food which we thought was more important to save - we made sure we got our priorities right!

At the pub quiz that night, the marchers A team won – the team consisted of Rachel, Stuart, Fraser and me. We won by a mile.

We enjoyed the Christian Socialist Movement service yesterday at the Labour party conference in Bournemouth. The Prime Minister Gordon Brown attended.

We got soaked yesterday, the first time in weeks! We also found out that the heather has turned a month and a half early – another sign of climate change.

Stuart: One of the hardest things during the march for me has been missing so much of Neighbours on TV! However the past couple of nights I have been lucky enough to be able to watch it.

One of the things I like best about Neighbours is the theme tune which has the refrain ‘Everybody needs good neighbours’.

Hearing the hallowed tune for the first time in weeks got me thinking - in terms of climate change, are we being good neighbours?

Is it very neighbourly to burn more than our fair share of carbon to the detriment of our brothers and sisters from around the world?

If we were to reduce our carbon emissions then maybe that will be when good neighbours become good friends.

Rosie: This morning Elise and I went into a lesson with a year 10 class at St Augustine School.

Elise talked about how the droughts in Burkina Faso have affected farmers in his area and then I asked the class to come up with ideas about how the UK should make carbon cuts of at least 80 per cent by 2050.

The children came up with loads of good ideas about public transport, green electricity and recycling.

We then talked about what the school could do to reduce its own emissions.

The lesson ended with a brilliant outcome - the class set up a campaign group on the spot and all signed up to get involved with it.

They also helped us come up with some new lyrics to one of our marcher songs (the 500 mile one).

We walked on a busy road to Westbury and experienced the usual mix of hooters and revvers.

The hooters are the cars that give us a little tune of support for the march and the revvers are the cars containing people who for some reason feel that revving their engine is the appropriate response to our protest.

I have to say that I find their behaviour quite interesting: are they enraged because they really do believe that climate change is a myth?

Or is their revving driven by a subconscious sense of guilt because driving their 4 x 4 is having a negative impact on other people’s lives?

Or perhaps they think that by revving their engines they will dissuade us from going on with this campaign.

If that is the case then they are very much mistaken!

Next stop Shaftesbury: Join us in Shaftesbury tomorrow evening, we'll also be in Blandford, Wimborne and Bournemouth this week.

Rosie: On Saturday we had a mini-rally in Bristol and Simon and Chira talked to the assembled crowds.

Simon told the story of Easter Island and talked about how all of us have to reduce our consumption to meet the required carbon cuts.

The sun was shining and we were joined by a steel band who played Jamaican music and created a summery mood, laid back atmosphere.

Then some of us went on to the St Pauls Bristol carnival, where we danced into the evening to a Brazilian samba band.

In Bath, we were joined by Greenpeace and Bath social action network. It was great to have their support and to share ideas about how organisations can work together for a better world.

Simon: We arrived at Trowbridge three-quarters of an hour early and were led off to spend time in a fun place.

We approached ASDA and I prayed we wouldn’t be entering this outpost of high carbon shopping that contributes so significantly to climate change.

I sighed in relief as we passed it and then cried out in despair when we entered the Shires shopping centre, a symbol of the over consumption that fuels climate change.

We stopped inside for about 30 seconds before two security guards tried to silence those of us who were telling people about the campaign and giving out leaflets.

We were kicked out of the centre and told it was private property. Apparently the shopping centre is only public as long as we are willing to consume.

When the consumption of unnecessary goods for the benefit of economic growth fuels the immense problems of climate change this highlights the need we face to push our politicians to do a lot more to respect the climate.

Elise: We slept overnight at St Mary’s church, Yate and awoke to a hearty cooked breakfast that set us on our way.

John from Cardiff did a school visit at the local school. He juggled with 3 globes. He said to the children the reality is that we only have one globe – the earth – and we need to take care of it.

Next, we walked along the old Bristol to bath railway - through suburban landscapes, along tunnels and even alongside the motorway.

We were joined by some Christian Aid supporters and stopped at Staple Hill Methodist church for a wonderful lunch.

In anticipation of our visit to the Labour Party Conference, Fraser has composed a new version of Glory, Glory Hallelujah!

Next stop Bristol: Join us in Bristol tomorrow for a picnic at 12 noon. To find out about the events in Bristol and Bath, and what’s coming up next week, visit Pressureworks
