Don't forget to spring forward this weekend!

Spirit Week

We are just about wrapped up with our study on China. The students have been busy creating websites to show the Geography of China. We also have been reading Red Scarf Girl which is about the struggle of the Chinese people during the Cultural Revolution. All websites are due next week Wednesday.

It is very snowy outside. Please be sure to send hats, gloves, and boots (snow pants if they would like to roll around). Being wet in class isn't much fun!

Thank you everyone for your work on the cultural fair projects. It was a huge success!

As you may have already noticed, the time to sell pizza is now! We have until the 12th to sell pizza for the upcoming pizza day on the 23rd. Remember if every family sells 50+ pizza we will have a pizza party for lunch. I'll have a sign up shortly.

This Friday is another home game. Don't forget to sign up to help out in the concessions.

A reminder to bring proper clothing (coat, hat, gloves) for being outside at recess time. We are going outside as long as the wind chill is above 0 degrees. It can get very frosty without a winter jacket even with layers.

Our Winter Gala bin is filling up nicely. If you have any "movie" related items to donate please send them by Friday.

Spirit week is coming up! Make sure all clothing options follow dress code and we do still go outside for recess.

Christmas Parties are Friday (after we practice our service). Remember Friday is a half day! Be at church by 6:10pm for the Christmas Service.

Students should have brought home a sheet with the Indy trip dates. Please return it by Friday with your best guess on who is coming. If things change let me know.

End of the quarter is Jan 12th. I gave students an update on grades on Monday along with any notes to what they need to fix. They have until Friday to do so. If anyone is unable to fix the assignments they will be ineligible for two weeks when we return to school.

January 17th is Lakeside Warrior for a Day for 7th graders. I am looking for parents who would like to take students. Lakeside takes all the students once they arrive. Let me know if you can do this.

Don't forget Cultural Fair is January 28th. Start planning your poster boards early!

It is officially December since we have all that white stuff on the ground... It also is a very busy time of year.

Tonight is the Christmas Concert put on by our band students. The concert starts at 6:30pm.

Lakeside Lutheran is visiting this week Tuesday (12/12) for the 8th graders to take their math placement test. Also on Wednesday 12/13 (our half day) JHS is having their Advanced Biology test (busing is provided but need to be at SJL by 7:45 am).

Perhaps you heard that last week we held a draft for our Russia presentations. Each group has their selections made and are busy working on their projects. Be sure to check in at home with the progress, each person has about three things to cover. A few groups asked if they could make food for the project. It is not mandatory but is allowed. The projects are due the 18th.

I saw a few families signed up for the cultural fair. Be sure to look over the information and pick a country that interests you. If you have questions about it you can contact myself or Mr. Lemke.

8th graders have a bunch of high school related events the next few weeks.
JHS is offering a tour during the school day December 5th. Please bring back the note if you are planning to attend JHS (we could use a parent to go with otherwise the students are going on their own).

On December 12th LLHS is coming to SJL to give their Math test. If there is a chance of going to LLHS you should take this test.

December 13th JHS is bringing students to JHS to take an Adv. Bio test. If you are planning on attending JHS you should take this test.

Advent is right around the corner! December 6th is the first Wednesday night service and supper. Grades 5-8 are scheduled to help bring this meal. Sign up at the bottom of the page of the following link http://bit.ly/SJLPTO.

If enough parents are interested we are able to take the December 20th meal. We would need people to bring sides/desserts and help clean and serve. All donations from the night would go toward our trips.

Secret Santa has begun. Please keep gifts between $5-$7. Just write your own name on the gift (not the person you have) so they stay secret. Students can bring gifts once the tree is up.

With basketball season in full swing, I've reminded the students that their grades need to be kept up in order to participate in athletics. Keep asking about school and homework and if you have any questions feel free to contact me.

Also our big Europe test is coming up the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Be sure to review the countries over the next two weeks.

Today we had our first evacuation drill. Student did a great job setting the example for the other classes. It was a nice break in our day.

Tomorrow afternoon we have our first forensics competition at SJL! Encourage students to keep working on their voices, pauses, and eye contact. We will be presenting in front of grades 5-8. If students are selected they move on to the conference meet on October 23rd 6:30pm @ Trinity St. Luke's in Watertown.

We also just started a new project in Geography. The students are starting to plan a vacation to the UK (and all, not just northern, Ireland). They have a budget and need to calculate travel times and costs to and from each location. Ask if they can bring you along :)

First of all, a big thank you to all the parents who helped make Friday and Saturday successful. Our goal for next time is to sell over 1000. Remember the more we sell the more money we have to offset our trip costs.

This week is very busy! We have state testing this week on the computers. We had visitors from Luther Prep today and we will have Lakeside visiting on Thursday.

Still no tournament bracket but we do have some estimated times for concessions on the 23rd. Outside of volunteers, I will also need a few coolers. If you have a truck (or van) that could hold a few small tables let me know. The games are at two parks and the plan is to set up at the first park for food (at that park until about 1) then drinks and snacks at the second park. I will need someone to set up and run the second park while I wrap things up at the first. Even if you can only come for part of the day please come and help support the 7/8 grade trip. Volunteer Opportunities

Another week is done and it is already the 7th of September!

This year each class gets to pick a mission field for our mission money. The 7th and 8th graders selected WELS Christian Aid and Relief. This WELS organization helps those who are part of a disaster (such as Harvey). Thank you for bringing your offering each week to help support their mission.

Students should have brought home pizza order forms. The goal is that every family sells at least 50. If everyone sells 50 we will have a special treat in the classroom. The more pizza we sell the more money we have to offset costs to our trips. Remember slips are due Monday 9/11!

We are hitting the books. Classes are in full swing and running smoothly. A special thanks to parents getting students in the routines of getting her on time each day. No tardies! Keep it up!

You may have a map master in your household soon. We have been studying maps in both Science and Geography. We found a cool tool to look at real topographic maps of the USA. https://viewer.nationalmap.gov/basic/

Fall sports have started. Look for information coming home about the upcoming pizza day (9/22) and concessions (9/23) soon as I'll need to fill volunteer slots. Remember this money goes toward our trips!

A couple reminders this week:

Deposits are due for the trip. Get them to Mrs. Pitzner. I heard students talking about making sure certain clothes are not worn this week so they are ready for next week. Be sure to check the weather and be ready for anything. Be sure anything brought follows dress code and should look on the nicer side.

Don't forget to fill out the paperwork and have it ready for Monday. We are also going to pack whatever bins/coolers we have Friday then again on Sunday. You can bring things for the trip already.

K-4 is putting on a production this Wednesday. It looks really good! Come out and see it.

If you have any questions feel free to ask. Other people may be wondering as well.

March Madness

The Flying Fool was a big hit!

If it is 60 degrees one day and 30 the next you probably live in Wisconsin. With the consistently crazy weather patterns comes the reminder to have an extra sweatshirt or jacket for being outside. After all, we will go outside unless it is raining more than a drizzle.

Our pizza totals are in. We are at about 900 pizzas sold. What is more impressive is that a few students sold 100 pizzas! Which is especially impressive because of how close these pizza sales have been to each other. Pizza day is next Friday (which is also the end of the quarter). DC trip is only a month and a half away! With the new pizza totals I will get the final amount per adult due to you (minus your deposit). We will also need to schedule a final DC meeting. I can't believe its almost March!

Basketball jerseys are being given their final wash. Shoes are finally drying all the way out. And the temperature is rising (maybe a little too quickly). Congratulations players and parents on a successful basketball season. It was nice to see student supporting each other through sports. It was always fun to hear who scored (especially their first basket of the season) or had a block or steal. The end of the basketball season means the madness of March is almost upon us!

We have a pizza day coming up right before Spring Break (March 17th). This is our last pizza day before our class trip and I hope we can put up big numbers like we did last sale. The offer still stands (600 pizzas total from 7/8 graders gets a prize or 50 pizza each student for a pizza party). We were close to the 600 goal last time and almost all students sold 50. Keep encouraging those sales!

I haven't done updates for what we are learning in each of the classes in a while. Remember asking specific questions helps keep interest and shows you find value in what they are learning. The more importance you place on their education, they will want to push themselves further.

It is hard to believe it is Christmas already!
We've been practicing for the upcoming service. If you are a parent of an 8th grader please be sure to have them practice their parts to be clear and confident. What a great opportunity to share the message of Christ to those in our family and community. Remember it starts at 6:30 (be there by 6:15 unless you are playing piano)

Our Christmas classroom party is also on Friday. Don't forget to bring the gift with your name on it. Also it is a good idea to double check if you are signed up for snacks or drinks.

Pizza slips are also going to come home for over the break. Perhaps you will see people that you normally wouldn't get the chance to ask. Our next pizza day is Thursday January 26th.

If you are unable to help with pizza day we can always use volunteers for the basketball games. A crew of 3 makes things work pretty efficiently. Don't forget to sign up or pop in when your child isn't playing.

December is coming!

It is hard to believe December is already upon us. We have a couple full weeks before Christmas break. Encourage students to practice their Christmas Service Recitations.

Here are a few upcoming events:

Tuesday 11/29- 8th grade students who are thinking about going to Jefferson next year are able to tour. Permission slip to do so is going home tonight. Students without the slip filled out and returned are not able to go.

Christmas Exchange- Students exchanged names and are asked to spend around $7-10 on the student they received. Please only put your name on the gift to keep the excitement of who has who hidden.

Wednesday December 7th- 5-8 Sing during Advent service @ 6:30. Advent services started this week. Don't forget there is a meal being served before hand!

Friday December 9th- First home game! Concession sign up to follow. If you were unable to sell or help on pizza days this is a great opportunity to volunteer.

Report Cards and More

Report cards went home today along with parent teacher conference times. Thank you for working around Thursday as much as possible. I look forward to seeing all of you.

Tomorrow is election day. Don't forget to vote and talk to your students about the importance of exercising your right to vote.

This week is also the week for the Book Fair. The students made wish lists available. Check it out after or before your conference time (also between church services).

We started a larger project during history today. Each group is responsible for creating a board game about the West. Today was a lot of fact gathering and ideas for games that would be historical. They sound very fun!

This week Friday we are putting together a Veteran's Day event. If you know any veterans, please be sure to invite them and have the RSVP to the office.

Don't forget to bring in money and slips for the Madison Symphony Orchestra trip on Nov. 15th. If anyone would like to come as a chaperone, I still have one parent slot available (let me know by Tuesday).

Next week Friday is Pizza Day! Many hands makes light work. Come for the day, come for a few hours, come for clean up. I heard a lot of students saying there were at or above the 50 pizzas sold.

Tables and Quarter Ends

We had a little upgrade over the weekend! Students are now at trapezoid tables instead of desks. We've started using a passing time between a few of our classes (a nice prep for high school passing). Some were hesitant at first but already have good things to say about them.

We officially started the second quarter today. Look for report cards (11.7) and notes on parent/teacher conferences (11.9-11.10).

November 12th LLHS has round 2 of the spelling bee. Congratulations Courtney, Jordyn, Nathan, and Dante on making it to round 2!

November 15th we are taking a field trip to the Madison Symphony Orchestra. We will be leaving around 9:45. If you are interested I do have room for one chaperone (first come basis). The cost will be $5 a person.

November 18th is the next pizza day. I will try to put a sign up sheet together soon to sign up for volunteering. If students sell 1200+ pizza, I'll treat them to a pizza lunch. We do need parent volunteers!

On November 22nd Jefferson High School is going to come and give us a presentation about JHS. It is a good time to bring any questions about the school before the tour.

8th graders who are possibly going to JHS are able to take a tour of Jefferson High School on November 29th (leave on bus at 12:50). I do need a parent to take students that day. If you are interested or able to help please let me know.
