Black Bean Brownie-kins

These are a legitimately delicious healthy version of fudge brownies.

I got the recipe from Chocolate Covered Katie here, and made a few modifications based on ingredient & kitchen equipment availability.

These delicious treats are made of black beans, maple agave syrup, quick oats, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, vanilla bean yogurt, and chocolate chips. Who would have thought black beans cold taste so good?

I didn't have a blender or food processor, so I used a potato masher to mash the beans.

Other substitutions included:

1/2c Maple Agave Syrup (Trader Joes) instead of Maple Syrup & Stevia
5.3 oz Vanilla Bean Greek Yogurt (Trader Joes) instead of Vegatable Oil

Notebook Collection

This is only one of many projects I've completed, started blogging about, then left hanging. I dug out the original tutorial photos taken in April 2011!

Throughout the past few years, I found that adding pretty details to my simple work notebooks was a simple and cost-effective way to upgrade from plain to luxe.

As described before here, I have an aversion to writing on lined paper and highly prefer putting my pen to plain unbounded areas.

Using a notebook to keep track of patients was inspired by an organized resident I worked for a few years ago. Best idea ever!

Gold Dipped Design

As my blog approaches it's 3rd birthday (in June), I decided to streamline & brighten the design. The main column has also been widened to create more space for pretty pictures.

Read on for more about the redesign.

Sketching. I started out with gold sharpie doodles.

Font. I've always found it hard to pick a proper font for an occasion. Some fonts look nice until you write out your own text, only to find the kerning isn't quite right or some characters are missing. Picking just one to define the blog style seems so definite. I finally settled on Mossy, a handwritten variation of Helvetica called, via dafont here.

Simplify. I contemplated keeping my original header and simplifying to black & white.

Inspiration. There were many pretty ideas that struck my fancy. First was watercolor, so I tried out cheap-o water color pencils, and contemplated purchasing stock photos.

Gold Dipped. Eventually after coming across gold dipped everything on Pinterest, I created a gold-dipped look of my own.

Our Wedding

On Saturday June 9, 2012, I married my best friend in Mammoth Lakes, California.

Our wedding is being featured today on Style Me Pretty California. Please head over there for more pictures & details.

I cannot believe half a year has already passed since our wedding.

It has been both easy and hard not to write about our wedding weekend here. Easy because I started my medical residency shortly after the wedding, and my time has been filled with work. Hard because this is my creative space and right-brained outlet from work, and I had to refrain from sharing glimpses all the creativity.

I've decided that in the coming days, I will make time at the very least to write about two wedding-related topics. First, more on the inspiration behind our wedding design. And second, about the creation of my wedding gown.

Sharpie Trinket Dish

Happy 2013!

On a rare and treasured day off work, I rang in the New Year by sleeping in until noon and decorating a plain dollar store dish to organize stray nail polish bottles.

The simple design was inspired by classic Kate Spade and created with Sharpie markers.

Mini Elf Hats

Holiday Head Accessories

As I was absentmindedly scrolling through Pinterest last weekend, I spotted an adorable mini Santa hat on a headband.

I thought it would be fun to make mini holiday hats for our family (at least for the ladies) this Christmas. In less than half an hour, I had whipped up my own version with materials I had on hand.

I used punchy red paper and bold blue pom poms. Since these mini hats aren't red and white, they're not exactly Santa hats... more like elf hats.

Dress up your space

A few weekends ago we hosted a bachelorette party in Santa Cruz. The bride to be loves purple, so I made a simple purple garland out of paint chips.

Tired Shoes

It's been a long few months of work since June.

These are my beloved Dansko work clogs. In a rare moment of being home in the daylight hours, I broke out my camera to photograph them -- something I've wanted to do for awhile.

My parents got these shoes for me as a birthday gift in the fall of 2007. I wore them to work at my research lab every day for the next 3 years & then the majority of days from then on.

They've been scuffed and re-polished countless times. I smile every time I see the lingering gold spray paint spots from this pumpkin made last Halloween.

I've been working up a storm & not particularly enjoying it. I am part of the way through a year of general medicine. I enjoy taking care of patients but not the substance of general medicine. I'm coming to terms with the fact that I will not see the inside of an operating room until next summer.

I've been lucky enough to find time for crafty endeavors along the way: birthday gifts for friends, starting a wedding album, hosting a bachelorette party, and helping my friend plan & design her San Francisco wedding a few weeks ago. Unfortunately I haven't had time to blog about any of it.

I try to brighten up my days with little things. This year is a means to an end. Those of you who follow me on Instagram know that I'm counting the days!

Two weekends ago we threw a bachelorette celebration in Santa Cruz.

The bride-to-be's head was adorned with a simple crown fashioned out of pipe cleaners (pin-spired, of course).

Peppermint Gum

Perfectly packaged chewing gum

After working all night, I just wanted one thing: to brush my teeth. But I never got around to it. So from now on I'll be sure to stock my pockets with gum and mints.

While checking out at the local Trader Joe's, or TJ's, I picked up this pack of peppermint gum because the packaging caught my eye.

In my delirious, barely awake daze, I thought: how is it that all the packaging at Trader Joe's is so well-designed and is that one of the reasons I enjoy shopping there?

After years of being spoiled enough to live extremely close to not one, but two TJ's, I almost exclusively buy my groceries there. Mr. Frosting, who is ever-abbreviating phrases, even made up the word "joeceries" for TJ's groceries.

It's a given that I love all their food. But what I've also really enjoyed is discovering new products up interesting new packages -- like an added bonus of shopping there.

Homemade Raw Energy

Cocoa packed snacks

Since I eat one to two Larabars every day at work, which scales upwards to over forty per month, I decided to try making a homemade chocolately version I pinned from Chocolate Covered Katie awhile back. Her blog is full of delicious chocolate-packed recipes, and her creations are entirely healthy to boot!

I made the the Fudge Babies in a Magic Bullet, and the ingredients completely overflowed the bullet's capacity.

The first few balls were almost entirely nuts with very little dates or chocolate. The last few balls were very chocolate and date heavy with very little nuts.

In spite of all that, they turned out delicious and surprisingly non-datey in flavor. Even Mr. Frosting, who cannot stand Larabars, thought they were tasty.

I will tell you that I used salted almonds in place of the walnuts and salt, but I'm still going to make you visit Chocolate Covered Katie for the original recipe.

Mostly Nuts

Recognize the mini cupcake liners? They were left over from dressing up nail polish favors, here.

I will definitely be making these little bites again but in smaller Magic Bullet sized batches.

I'll let you know how they turn out!

One project at a time

Our apartment entrance has a small landing below a long staircase. Many months ago the landing had a picture frame and repotted palm tree stalks that couldn't survive in the light-deprived area.

I slowly updated the area with tile-framed seashells, faux vintage mirrors, a bike tire wreath, and a printed ottoman.

Since California apartments lack coat closets, the final addition was an antlered coat hook for me to hang my coat on after long days at work. I've always loved antlers, so this was another little thing to brighten up the days.

Unique details always catch my eye

I have always been an accessories girl. I have a habit of pairing unique shoes, bags, and jewelry with plain clothing.

When I saw Anthropologie's Taika Flats in the store this summer, I knew it would be an easy and fun look to recreate.

I picked up a pair of plain brown faux leather (and surprisingly comfortable) flats at Target and put an autumn spin on them with touches of cream and deep pink paint.

It's the little things

I've been spending a good amount of my waking hours in the hospital, all while wearing androgynous scrubs.

Through the years I've found that the little things that brighten up your day make a big difference. During a recent trip to anthropologie, I snagged some colorful printed fabric bobbies to brighten up my days.

Right before I started my surgery rotation in the spring of 2011, I decided my makeup routine really needed some little things, here.

In the end, I loved working in surgery and those little things were like frosting on the cake.

Now that I'm back doing non-surgically oriented things for a year, I have a feeling I'm going to need a lot of little things to keep me going.

Polka Dotted Skinnies

Anthropologie-Inspired Pin Dots

I've been wanting to try making polka-dotted denim ever since I saw a few pairs pop up at Anthro this past spring.

So how to turn regular old jeans into dotted ones? I remembered seeing people use bleach pens to make t-shirt designs on Pinterest. I debated making bleach dots versus using fabric paint dots.

In the end I went with bleach because I was curious to see how the bleach pen would work.

I used a Clorox bleach pen to make tiny dots on Target skinnies. I figured if things didn't go well, it wouldn't be a super expensive mistake, and I could always completely bleach the jeans completely white.

In any case, everything went well with the polka dotting process. I couldn't be happier with the results!

Faux Mercury Glass

Shiny little candle holders

DIY wedding decor comes with the challenge of scaling up your projects to make mass quantities.

I wanted to create shiny mercury glass votive holders for our wedding reception tables. I browsed a few tutorials online that involved using acid sprays and flicking paint with a toothbrush.

While the results looked EXACTLY like mercury glass, I realized it would be too time consuming to use those methods to make a hundred candles.

I came up with a quicker method to get the mercury glass look. My votives don't look exactly like mercury glass but they had the same shiny effect.

For my project, I completed a much-needed update to my kitchen by adding a colorful pattered rug. I used a 99 Cent Store dish sponge to apply Martha Stewart all-purpose paint in a herringbone pattern.

Stamped Rugs

Our kitchen rug literally disintegrated about a year ago.

Last autumn someone thought to throw out the sad area rug, and the floor was left bare for awhile.

Last winter I picked up some area rugs from the 99 Cent Store, intending to try painting them.

Last weekend I finally got around to painting the rugs.

Saw all these ideas on Pinterest!

Car Mats, qty 2 (99 Cent Store, $2)
Dish Sponge, qty 1 (99 Cent Store, $1 per 2-pack)
Martha Stewart Multi-Surface Satin Paint, Spring Pasture (Michael's, $1.80 with coupon)
Foam Paint Brush (Michael's)
Scissors

Note: Items without prices were not purchased for this project.

Total Cost = less than $5

Tips:

I stamped all the way down each column on both rugs and worked from left to right.
Use a foam paint brush to fill in gaps and thin out paint clumps.
Allow paint to dry overnight.

Summer Treats

Things are finally settling down after my graduation and wedding.

And by "settling down" I mean only in terms of traveling and entertaining out of town guests. I've been busy getting prepared to start my first year of medical residency, also known as "intern year."

I promise I have LOADS of wedding-related pictures and projects to share and will be posting them as time allows this summer and fall.

We enjoyed my last full weekend before intern year starts by barbecuing with friends.

Actually they did all the barbecuing and we brought store-bought cupcakes. But these weren't just any store-bought cupcakes.

They were delicious "Coconut Caramel Cookie" cupcakes from Cupcakes Couture, and as advertised, they tasted just like Girl Scout Samoa cookies (which have been renamed "Caramel DeLites" for some unknown reason).

We also tried Peanut Butter & Jelly, Banana Foster, and Strawberry Cheesecake.
