Dining in the Willamette Valley, Oregon

One of the great things about wine trips is that usually really great restaurants go hand in hand with wine country. Plus nobody looks at you funny if your table orders a couple of bottles of wine for lunch.

Willamette Valley Oregon Wine Tasting

I love wine trips. First and I guess foremost, there’s the wine. Second, wine trips are fun to do with friends – and I happen to have a group of 3 couples who travel well together and enjoy the same things. Third, wherever there is good wine, there is usually good food. And fourth, most wine country is so beautiful it can take your breath away.

Veritas – New York City

Hands down, the best part of my visits to see my son in Manhattan are our special dinners. Each visit we pick an off the charts wonderful place to dine. It’s usually something expensive that he most likely wouldn’t do on his own, I invite his two best friends from his first job in the city, and it’s my treat. I stay for nothing at his apartment so that we can spend the money on food and wine instead – and I’m sure that makes all the sense in the world to you foodies reading about this spot! Dining Solo in Manhattan

I arrived in New York this afternoon to visit my son. He was sweet enough to leave work early to meet me at his apartment, but had a networking event that left me to fend for myself for dinner. Normally my blog posts are filled with photos – and I was tempted to pull out the camera to start shooting today. But I had a better idea – let me see just how well I can paint a picture of my evening without a single photo at all.

True story. I sat in a hotel lobby in Rome recently, enjoying my caffe macchiato, waiting for my friend to come down for breakfast to start our day. A small group had congregated in the lobby, getting ready to head out for a day of touring, and one of the couples started debating the weather forecast for the day. The woman confidently shoved her iPhone in her husband’s face. “Weather.com says it’s going to be a high of 74 and sunny.” The husband immediately pulled his phone out of his pocket and began searching for his favorite weather feed, wondering out loud if it was sunny out today, and then insisted his internet weather feed was more accurate. As he did so, a third person pulled out his smart phone and did that odd thing we do when we can’t get service

Brodetto di Pesce

People often ask me what dish I like best at the coking school in Puglia. Each and every pasta is fantastic. The vegetables are really good. But once again this year, the brodetto di pesce (zuppa di pesce) was my hands down favorite (assuming you don’t count the burrata which is a cheese, not really a recipe). Here’s what’s in it.
