Browser Competition!

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to see what everyone's opinions are for web browsers. Because I am just getting into web design I have had to deal with the major four a lot lately, and have found that they love to hit on each other (go figure). Safari Brags that it has the fastest load times ( http://www.apple.com/safari/ ). But they are only counting FF 2 and Opera 9 not the new 9.5.

So my personal opinion is that Firefox 3 is the way to go, with opera as second, then safari and lastly IE.

Firefox 3:

this was taken at the same time the others were, but with firefox I was able to max out at about 200mbs.
It is clearly faster for speed tests and ping and so on, and page load times take the same or less than safari for me.
Also all the add ons are amazing.

The only bad thing with firefox is how the add-ons can be incompatible so fast.

Opera 9.5:

Not bad speed, but always had horrible ping. Great interface though

Safari:

I really have nothing agaisnt safari, except it seems a bit 'childish' to me and I like a web browser with power. (and customization)

IE 7:

IE did beat others in speed from speed test.net but it has a horrible user interface is my opinion.

(All these were taken at 2pm on standard comcast internet, nothing fancy.)

Other opinions?

Space station toilet breaks down, bladders erupt

From CNN.com: "The international space station's lone toilet is broken, leaving the crew with almost nowhere to go. So NASA may order an in-orbit plumbing service call when space shuttle Discovery visits next week. Until then, the three-man crew will have to make do with a jury-rigged system when they need to urinate.

While one of the crew was using the Russian-made toilet last week, the toilet motor fan stopped working, according to NASA. Since then, the liquid waste gathering part of the toilet has been working on-and-off. Fortunately, the solid waste collecting part is functioning normally. Russian officials don't know the cause of the problem, and the crew has been unable to fix it.

Phoenix Spacecraft Beams Home First Images of Mars

From Space.com: "NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander has returned its first images from the surface of Mars, showing that the probe's vital solar arrays have successfully deployed and giving scientists their first up-close glimpse of the Martian arctic surface.

Phoenix landed in a northern polar region of Mars called Vastitas Borealis late Sunday, with mission controllers here at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) receiving their first signals from the spacecraft at about 7:53 p.m. EDT (2353 GMT).

The first image Phoenix was instructed to take was of its solar arrays so that engineers could make sure the craft was getting power. The batteries Phoenix flew in on have only enough power to last about 30 hours, which would have significantly hampered the lander's abilities to perform its planned three-month mission."

View full article, video simulation of landing, pictures (Space.com)

Apple sued for Mighty Mouse trademark infringement

I think it might be time to get the front-page news going again after a very long hiatus. One of the stories this past week has been that a company called Man & Machines has decided to sue Apple for trademark infringement. As it turns out, Man & Machines is claiming that it has been using the name "Mighty Mouse" for their line of mice a whole year before Apple started selling theirs. Why it's taken them so long to realize this is anyone's guess. Maybe they're going through a rough time and are in dire need of some cash. Who knows.

And while we're on the issue of Apple's Might Mouse...mice, why didn't it cross their marketing people's minds to just call it something like iSoapBar or iRidiculouslyWeirdLookingAndUnErgonomicExcuseOfAMouse? I think the latter one in particular has a ring to it.

It would probably take me less time to learn how to fly a 767 than to learn how to use the Mighty Mouse. I got one with my Mac and spent a whole 60 seconds trying to use it before my hand had had enough and decided to just go back to the Microsoft Wireless Laser 5000, which is probably the best mouse...in the world.

By the way, this is going to be the new style of writing for front page news; I'll briefly mention the story, then make a very funny rant, then conclude with some satirical statements; we're bound to get more readers this way, particularly those who find no shame in laughing at bad humor.

I read the story here (via The Code Project)

Norton Removal Tool, Symantec's best product to date

Of all the products released by Symantec, I have to say, their Removal Tool is by far their best. They've really outdone themselves with that gem of a product. Reaction to it has been overwhelmingly positive from reviewers all across the Internet. Here's a description of what it does from the Symantec website:

"The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton 2008/2007/2006/2005/2004/2003 products and Norton 360 from your computer."

I've had Norton 360 installed on my Windows machine for a while now. Not only is it useless against a boatload of spyware applications, but it is also a memory hog, it's slow to load, it's slow during scans, it takes it several weeks to react after you click on "Skip Scan" or "Stop Scan", it causes random lockups during startup, and the list just goes on and on...The only thing it's good at is cleaning up temporary internet files, which I have to admit is great, especially since doing it from within IE or Firefox is such a hassle. I mean you have to load the browser, and then you have to go to Tools, click on Internet Options/Clear Private Data, then click on the button...I mean, it's just not worth the trouble.

Take a look at the attached screenshot. Good old SpyBot S&D found over 100 suspicious files and entries in under 10 minutes, while Norton has found none and it's been running for over an hour so far.

Grandma's revenge

This is bril.....

I'd have her for my Gran any day

The Rambo Granny of Melbourne , Australia

Gun-toting granny Ava Estelle, 81, was so ticked-off when two thugs raped her 18-year-old granddaughter that she tracked the unsuspecting ex-cons down - - and shot off their testicles.

The old lady spent a week hunting these men down -- and when she found them, she took revenge on them in her own special way, said Melbourne police investigator Evan Delp. Then she took a taxi to the nearest police station, laid the gun on the sergeant's desk and told him as calm as could be:

'Those bastards will never rape anybody again, by God.'

Cops say convicted rapist and robber Davis Furth , 33, lost both his penis and his testicles when outraged Ava opened fire with a 9-mm pistol in the hotel room where he and former prison cell mate Stanley Thomas, 29, were holed up.

The wrinkled avenger also blew Thomas' testicles to kingdom come, but doctors managed to save his mangled penis, police said. The one guy, Thomas, didn't lose his manhood, but the doctor I talked to said he won't be using it the way he used to, Detective Delp told reporters. Both men are still in pretty bad shape, but I think they're just happy to be alive after what they've been through.

The Rambo Granny swung into action August 21 after her granddaughter Debbie was carjacked and raped in broad daylight by two knife-wielding creeps in a section of town bordering on skid row. "When I saw the look on my Debbie's face that night in the hospital, I decided I was going to go out and get those bastards myself 'cause I figured the Law would go easy on them," recalled the retired library worker. "And I wasn't scared of them, either-- because I've got me a gun and I've been shooting' all my life. And I wasn't dumb enough to turn it in when the law changed about owning one"

So, using a police artist's sketch of the suspects and Debbie's description of the sickos', tough-as-nails, Ava spent seven days prowling the wino-infested neighbourhood where the crime took place till she spotted the ill fated rapists entering their flophouse hotel.

I knew it was them the minute I saw 'em, but I shot a picture of 'em anyway and took it back to Debbie and she said sure as hell, it was them, the oldster recalled.
So I went back to that hotel and found their room and knocked on the door and the minute the big one, , opened the door, I shot 'em right square between the legs, right where it would really hurt 'em most, you know.

Then I went in and shot the other one as he backed up pleading to me to spare him. Then I went down to the police station and turned myself in.

Now, baffled lawmen are trying to figure out exactly how to deal with the vigilante granny. What she did was wrong, and she broke the law, but it is difficult to throw an 81-year-old woman in prison, Det. Delp said, especially when 3 million people in the city want to nominate her for Mayor.
