This is a very cool look at how the future of technology was viewed in 1961, from a film AT&T commissioned shortly after AT&T had just announced its first modem. “This film not only serves as almost the birth of the information age, it also projects that technology far into the future.”

The commercial products that would allow this connected, computer-communicating network? They’re basic, but at the time seemed radical:

* The wireless Bellboy Pager, which was introduced commercially in 1962
* The Data-phone, which was supposed to revolutionize business communications
* The videophone—shown as a credit-card-reading vertical two-way television
* The card-reading phone or automatic dialer, which would dial a number from small plastic punch cards, introduced in 1961
* Oh, and package delivery via rocket (which had just been tested in 1959).

BBC Future Media director Ralph Rivera, in a speech to the BBC’s online staff, says digital media is still basically being used as a distribution medium for old media formats — just like when television first launched and was basically a way of transmitting radio. “The iPlayer, as great as it is, is still television online,” he says.

“I think we are still just scratching the surface of what Internet as a medium is going to be…. How do we combine the creativity of storytellers with the innovation of technologists?”

The answer, he says, is taking a connected, creative “studio” approach. “We are going to have a connected strategy to drive connected experiences, experiences that enable us to take advantage of the medium itself. And we are going to do this within the context of a connected studio.”

He says this is not about experimentation. “It’s about creating experiences.”

As web video continues to surge among traditional and newer news outlets alike, one wonders whether, in the future, textual content will take a backseat to televisual content. With cheapening bandwidth and constantly improving streaming technology, the technological barriers for this shift would be fairly low. And with text-based news organizations ramping up their capabilities on this front, there will be a steady supply of video. And video ads are booming as well, with eMarketer predicting that online video ads will make up 15% of all online ad revenues by 2016, up from 7.9% this year.
