Go dark and get deep as Dan walks you through the basics of setting up a burner laptop! In a special, two part episode, we’re going to look at the hardware, network, software, and physical security you’ll need to think about when you’re setting up a laptop you might eventually walk away from. Here in Part One, let’s talk about the hardware, the network, and operational security of the device.

CORRECTION: During the episode I refer to GPS as a two way communication which, as Jason Griffey and John Fink pointed out on Twitter, is wrong. What I was talking about is the communication between GPS and apps that use GPS. The GPS on a smartphone is a receiver, and that’s all it does, receive information. I am so sorry for that error, and I’ll mention this correction in Part Two!

Notes

To disable screen blanking and screen savers on Raspbian for Raspberry Pi, you need to edit /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

sudo nano /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

Look for a section in the file labeled [SeatDefaults]. You’ll find several lines underneath it commented out with the # symbol. Remove the # symbol from the line xserver-command and change it to read

xserver-command=X -s 0 dpms

Save the file and reboot.

Raspberry Pis have taken the maker and geek world by storm! Little, inexpensive computers that can do so many great things? Yeah that has a lot of possibilities within the library! Join Dan and discover a project he’s working on that involves a Raspberry Pi.

Notes

Outline for what I’ve done for a digital shelf talker unit powered by Raspberry Pi.

Raspberry Pi Model B – uses a MicroSD and has four USB ports
Using a kit I found on Amazon. Links in the shownotes
1. The great thing about this kit isn’t just the case and plugs but also the WiFi plug. That’s what you really need for a project like this.
Screenly OSE
1. Managed through web browser
2. Displays slides, MP4s, and websites as a digital signage solution
3. Easier to use and set up than Xibo. I love it!
4. OSE is the FOSS edition, there is a paid solution with more spiffs – check it out
Using the custom image found on Screenly OSEs website, I flashed that to the SD card using Win32DiskImager – an open source app that is excellent for this
1. The Screenly OSE custom image is just Raspbian with Screenly OSE pre-installed. Save yourself some time, just use it.
2. Flash that to the SD card, pop the card in your Raspberry Pi, hook everything up, and plug it in!
3. 1. Plug into a live ethernet jack that allows access to the Internet. You’ll need that to get things going.
4. It’ll start up and go right into a demo display with a video. Let that play through and then hit CTRL ALT F1 to get to a login prompt.
5. The login is the default for Raspberry Pi and Raspbian, the user is pi and the password is raspberry – all lower case.
So the tricky part isn’t getting Screenly OSE to work it’s getting the Pi to automatically connect to WiFi. Over ethernet it’s great! Wifi needs a little tweaking
1. To do this, we need to install a better network manager. It’s spelled wicd, but to keep it straight in my head I call it “wicked” which will make more sense in a few moments.
2. Getting wicd installed is pretty easy. I’ll have this info listed in the show notes, so don’t feel like you have to write things down furiously.
3. 1. Type sudo apt-get update and then sudo apt-get install wicd-curses. So I call the network manager wicked and the whole thing is wicked curses, see?
  2. sudo wicd-curses
  3. You’ll get a pretty simple interface to set up your wifi connection, link to more information in the show notes but I bet you’ll figure it out pretty quickly
  4. Set up your wifi access (choose it, password if needed, etc) and make sure you set it up to connect automatically!
  5. After that, hit F10 to save the setup and then SHIFT C to connect. If you did it all correctly, the wifi connects up! BRILLIANT!
  6. 1. Oh except for the fact that it won’t do this automatically upon boot, not yet
  7. Okay so the trick is that we need to get the wicd service to start automatically. To do that, we need to edit the /etc/profile file to start the service on login.
  8. 1. When Screenly OSE starts, it logs in. Whenever someone logs in, /etc/profile is invoked
    2. So let’s cd /etc and, just to be safe, make a copy with sudo cp profile profile.bak, then sudo nano profile
    3. To start the service, add sudo service wicd start to the end of that profile
    4. CTRL X and save
    5. Moment of truth time. Disconnect your ethernet cable and reboot the Pi
  9. When Screenly OSE comes up, it may or may not show you the IP for the Pi. Sometimes it doesn’t get the wifi connection in time to display it. To verify your wifi connection, do the CTRL ALT F1 and login again.
  10. 1. type ifconfig and you should see an IP under WLAN0. There you go! Pop that into a web browser on your network and you can manage Screenly OSE!
  11. You can set up a persistent IP if you want. Me, I prefer to just set it up as a DHCP reservation at the router.

Ever want a big, digital sign in your library but didn’t want to have to pay big money to get it? Well if you have a couple old computers and a monitor, the Cyberpunk Librarian has the answer to your digital signage needs!

Getting up and running with Xibo

What you will need

A computer running Linux that will act as your server

Another computer running Windows

A monitor or flat panel HDTV for your digital displays

The Server

For my server, I ran Kubuntu and installed a LAMP stack. (LAMP is short for Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP.) For Ubtuntu based flavours, you can easily install LAMP via:

sudo apt-get install tasksel

sudo tasksel install lamp-server

As it installs, it will ask for a password for MySQL. Give it one and write it down. Put that password someplace safe. You won’t need it all that often, but when you need it, you need it.

Download the Xibo server

Xibo client for Windows or Linux

Installing and running

Note: To make things easier to move around, rename, copy, and store; I opened up a superuser Dolphin window. You can easily do this from the terminal (called Konsole on KDE) by typing:

sudo dolphin

I installed the Xibo server on a Kubuntu server running 14.04 LTS. After installing the LAMP stack I extracted Xibo and then copied it to the directory Ubuntu uses for web service with Apache:

/var/www/html

Rename the directory with an easier name like, you know, xibo. For the rest of these notes, I’ll assume you called your xibo directory by that name.

You’ll need to give ownership and access of the xibo directory to the web user, or the Apache user. On Ubuntu flavours this user is called www-data. So:

sudo chown www-data.www-data -R xibo

That gives the web server the permissions it needs to access and run the system. Since this is an internal web service, I didn’t make any changes to the Apache configs.

Pop into /var and create a directory called xibo there too. This will hold your images and stuff for the screens and, for security reasons, it should be outside of the web directory. Give the web user owner ship with the same command as before:

sudo chown www-data.www-data -R xibo

PHP Dependencies

Chances are, some of these checkmarks will be red X’s if you run the install right away.

When you initially try to install Xibo you’ll get a screen like this and, chances are, you don’t have all the necessary PHP dependencies. May as well get them now

You’ll need the GD extension so:

sudo apt-get install php5-gd

Then go get the mcrypt extension. It’ll need some massaging to work.

sudo apt-get install php5-mcrypt

Once you get it installed, you’ll need to do a little bit of editing to make everything play nicely together. There’s an excellent explanation over on AskUbuntu on how to fix it up. Don’t worry, it’s pretty easy.

Edit php.ini to allow larger uploads. Since I was using KDE, I was using kate, the standard text editor for the system. So…

sudo kate /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini

Change post_max_size and upload_max to 128 MB Increase max_execution_time to 120 seconds

Yes! That should do it!

Open up the browser on your server and go to localhost/xibo and follow the directions to install. You’ll create an admin password for the user xibo_admin and you’ll need to create a server key to add clients into the server.

Setting up the client

If your clients are running Windows, then set up is incredibly easy – install the client and set it up. You can set up things like times to refresh, the directory to cache images, and so on.

Or use a live distro of Linux without any persistent storage. You can set up a live USB of Ubuntu or many other distros of Linux. For instance, I also carry Kubuntu around my neck as a live stick.

Use Good Passwords

This is one of the most important things of all. If you’re using weak passwords, then you’re not securing anything at all. It’s the equivalent of leaving a key under your doormat.

Remmina – VNC, RDP, and so much more for Linux. I’ve used it on Unity, Gnome, and KDE with no issues at all! Great software and a total win for open source!
Angelique Pettyjohn – Best known for her appearance on the Star Trek: TOS episode “The Game Masters of Triskelion,” Angelique was also an adult film star, movie star, dancer, fashion designer, model, and burlesque performer. Yes, I named my MacBook Air after her. I never claimed to be normal.

Welcome to the relaunch of the Cyberpunk Librarian podcast!

I’m back on the airwaves, or at the very least a wireless router or two, with a new podcast that’s pretty similar to the old podcast. As much as I love video and making videos, I find I just don’t have the time right now to roll them out as I’d like to. Meanwhile, I can make a podcast in an hour or so, and that’s start to finish. (Plus a little time to create an outline and stuff, but that can be done over the course of a week.)

On this, the first episode of the relaunch, we’re going to talk about writing a book and paying nothing for software!
