How to partition a hard drive in Windows 8

With the increasing trend of hard disk sizes, it makes more sense than ever to partition your drive. A partition is a logical division of hard disk space into storage units. These storage units are what is termed a partition.

Its common practice these days to store the operating system (Windows files) on one partition and other files (like personal documents, media, music, work data) on a separate partition on the same hard drive. The benefits of this are, should something happen to the operating system it can be repaired or the OS partition can be formatted without touching the users personal data.

Follow the simple steps below to learn How to partition a hard drive in Windows 8:

- Press Windows key + R (This brings up the Run dialog box)
- In the Run box type diskmgmt.msc and click OK (This will bring up the Disk Management console)

- You will now see a list of your hard drives and their partitions. (See picture below)

- You will need Unallocated hard disc partition to create a new partition. If you do not have any Unallocated space, you can create it by simply shrinking an existing disk partition. To do this simple right-click your hard drive partition click Shrink Volume (See picture below)

- You will now be presented with a box that shows you the maximum size available to shrink the partition by.

Leave it as default or enter a value of your choice and click the Shrink button. (See picture below)

- Once your main partition is shrunk you will get an Unallocated disc listed. This space is not yet usable. You need need to create a new partition from this

- To create a partition from this Unallocated space, right-click the Unallocated space and click New Simple Volume.

- This launches the New simple Volume Wizard that will guide you through the process of choosing the drive letter (choose one that's not not in use), selecting the file system (FAT or NTFS), the label or name of the volume. Once you've selected the desired options create the Volume.

- You are now done, just go to My Computer and you will see the new partition listed.

A feature has been lacking for ages is the ability to password protect a folder.
We've been using third-party to do this for years. Among the best we've ever used is a freeware utility called Folder Protector.

It's tiny and easy-to-use.

To use follow these steps:

- Copy the lockdir.exe file into a folder you want to protect.

- Launch the lockdir.exe file and set a password (see below) and click Protect

When someone opens your locked folder, they will be nothing but the lockdir.exe file.

A Boot Menu is a menu (or list) of items you can choose from to determine what device a computer boots (or starts up from)

The Boot Menu is normally accessed by pressing a button on your keyboard when your computer starts up. The exact button you press varies depending on your computer manufacturer, but usually its Esc, F10 or F12. The specific key you need to press is displayed when you put your computer on.

The boot menu can contain various different device options from which a computer is allowed to boot from. these include CD/DVD drives, Hard drives, USB flash drives and a Network (LAN).

This allows you to load operating systems, perform diagnostics or install or run applications, even if the computer already has an operating system (OS) on it.

Microsoft Messenger Diccontinued. Hello Skype!

Its been a long time coming! Ever since Redmond bought Skype, we've been waiting for the announcement that brings the death knell for Microsoft messenger. That time has finally come. Starting March 15, Windows Live Messenger (previously MSN Messenger) will be no more. Instead, all your Messenger contacts will be migrated to Skype, whether you’re already using it or not.

This comes into effect worldwide, except mainland China, where Messenger will continue to be available. Starting Tuesday last, Microsoft has began informing all its users of the upcoming change in an official email bearing the subject “Important info about your Messenger account”.

The email details everything you need to know about the move to Skype.

You've got exactly two months to say goodbye to Messenger and move over to Skype to keep your chats going. To migrate your account to Skype, all you have to do is download the latest version and sign in using your Microsoft account.

Simply follow the steps below to uninstall/remove Windows 7 Service Pack 1 from your computer:

- Click Start
- In the search box, type Command Prompt.

- In the list of results, right-click Command Prompt, and click Run as administrator. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

- Type the following in the command prompt window and then press Enter.

wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:976932

Thats all it takes to uninstall/remove Windows 7 Service Pack 1 from your computer.

With last weeks announcement of Microsoft's Surface tablet, internet forums and message boards have been abuzz with talk about Microsoft's new range of tablet devices. This article aims to provide you with the information you need to know about Windows RT.

What is Windows RT?

Windows RT is a special edition of Windows 8 that runs on ARM. You’ll find it alongside Intel x86 machines in stores. Though based on Windows 8, you’ll be surprised just how much Windows RT differs from the traditional Windows you know.

Windows RT is claimed to be so different to Windows 8 that Microsoft told Mozilla "Windows RT isn't Windows anymore.”

If you’re considering buying a Windows system in stores, its recommended you know the difference between Windows RT and Windows 8.

ARM processors vs. x86 processors

During development, Windows RT was known in as Windows on ARM, or WOA. It is is essence a direct port of Windows from Intel x86 processors to ARM processors. In case you;re wondering, x86 processors are what you will commonly find in standard desktop and laptop computers today, while smart-phones and tablets on the other hand use ARM processors.

Windows RT only supports applications written for Windows Runtime or WinRT (yes, “WinRT” refers to the runtime that works on both architectures, while “Windows RT” refers to the operating system that only works on ARM processors).

How does it look?

Windows RT does have a desktop, much like other editions of Windows 8. You're even able to launch the desktop and use applications like Control Panel, Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer, and even Microsoft Office. Windows RT even comes with a touch-optimized version of Microsoft. You won't find Windows Media Player included, however.

A downside to the Windows RT desktop is the inability to run non-Microsoft applications. Microsoft simply won’t allow third-party applications on the Windows RT desktop. I

Third-Party Application Restrictions

All third-party apps on Windows RT must be Metro applications. As you probably guessed by now all Metro applications must go through the Windows Store and be approved by Microsoft. This means that a Windows RT device can only run Microsoft-approved apps in the same way an iPad can only run Apple-approved apps.

This application restriction has implications for browser choice. A Windows RT device includes the Metro version of Internet Explorer and has exclusive access to system API's. This effectively means Mozilla, Google, Opera and others can’t develop their own browsers for Windows RT. Mozilla and Google have brought up concerns about this

Bottom line - If you use a Windows RT device, you’ll be using Internet Explorer in much the same way as you use Safari with an iPad, you’ll be using Safari.

Designed For Devices

Microsoft thinks of Windows RT computers as “devices,” not traditional PCs. You won’t be able to buy a retail boxed copy of Windows RT in stores. It will only available pre-installed on ARM systems.

Windows RT devices will be locked down in other ways also.Secure Boot for example on Windows RT devices isn’t user-configurable, so you won’t be able to remove Windows RT and install Linux or another operating system.

Missing Traditional Enterprise Features

Windows RT by design lacks many enterprise features that have made Windows so successful. You wont be able to join a Windows RT device to an Active Directory domain and nor does it support group policy, so you can managed Windows RT devices using existing Windows infrastructure.

Windows RT also lacks other features, including Boot from VHD, client hyper-V, BitLocker, remote-desktop hosting, and encrypted file systems.

Windows RT - Not for all Microsoft tablets

Most of the tablets you’ll see in stores when Windows 8 debuts won’t run Windows RT. These tablets will ship with x86 Intel processors and run one of the standard versions of Windows 8. This means they’ll happily support third-party desktop software and all standard Windows features.

When buying a Windows 8 ensure you get the right one. If you need support for legacy desktop software or Enterprise support then get an x86 tablet running Windows 8 and not an ARM one.

Forums are filled with rumors indicating that each copy of Windows RT will cost manufacturers around $85, making Windows RT quite possibly more expensive than other Windows 8 versions. This could also make Windows RT tablets more expensive than iPads.

Restart Exchange 2010 Services - The easy way

Microsoft Exchange has a plethora of services that often need to be restarted due to troubleshooting or to resolve known issues. Manually restarting each service can be time consuming as can a full server reboot. Fortunately we have a simple script that restarts all Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2010 services quickly.

- Open Notepad on your Exchange server.

- Copy and paste the code below into Notepad.

How to install Windows 7

This article is an easy to follow step-by-step guide, which will teach you how to install Windows 7 on your computer.

To follow this guide, you will need a Windows 7 installation DVD or USB, and the product serial key. If you are doing an upgrade from an earlier operating system on your computer or a fresh install to replace and existing one, you will need to back up all your data and important files. It is possible to buy only three versions of Windows 7 - Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate. While Home Premium is enough for most people, while Ultimate includes everything contained by the other two as well as support for ReadyBoost and additional language packs. Select the 32bit or 64 bit according to your system specifications.

How to install Windows 7

Step 1: Check your machine specifications

Download and run Microsoft's Upgrade Advisor here

Before you can start to install Windows 7. you need to verify that your system meets Microsofts minimum requirements. If your system was running Wiindows Vista then you can safely skip step 1.

For satisfactory performance, a 1 GHz CPU and a 1GB RAM is the bare minimum required, but people have reported running Windows 7 on a lot less although this isn't recommended for most users.
The advisor checks basic system requirements, and provides a report.

Following the advice, you may choose to upgrade or do custom install. For this article, we have chosen to do a custom install of WIndows 7.

Step 2: Start the installation

Boot up your computer from the installation disk. Select the appropriate Language, Time and currency and keyboard options and click Next.

At this juncture, Windows 7 installation gives you a choice to continue with the installation or to do a repair for an existing installation. Therefore, later, if you have a problem, you may choose to repair from here.Click Install Now

Now click Custom (Advanced)

Step 3: Choose where to install

The next question is where you want to install Windows 7. If your hard disk is undivided, you will see it whole.

You can go ahead and proceed with the install by clicking Next, or you may want to partition your hard disk by selecting Drive options (advanced).

If you decide to partition your drive, then click Drive Options (advanced) you will see the screen below:

You can Delete, Format, or create New partitions as required. Once you have finished, you must select the partition where you want Windows 7 to reside. Windows might warn you that it will create additional partitions. Simple click Ok when prompted. (See picture below)

Now, The Windows 7 installer will copy the necessary files to your computers hard drive and install the operating system. (See picture below)

During this process your computer may restart by itself.

Step 4: Create a User account

After the installation has completed you will need to give the provide a username and password of your choice that will be used to log in your fresh Windows 7 installation. Once you have entered a suitable username and password click Next (See picture below)

The next step is entering your Windows 7 product key. Simply type this in and click Next (See picture below)

Step 5: Setup the Windows

How to Disable The Windows 8 Store

This article is an easy-to-follow systematic guide, which will teach you to disable the Windows 8 store.

Although the Integrated apps store is one of the most significant features of the Windows 8 operating system, this free pack may become a major headache for the users who share their netbooks with their family members or others. Installing several apps and games could increase the installation size and mess up the operating environment. To prevent such disasters, you can disable the Windows 8 Store, by changing the Local Group Policy.

Step 1: Invoke the Local Group Policy.

Press the Windows Key+R to open up the run box dialog. Here, you must decide whether you are implementing this change for all users, specific users / groups, or for all users except administrators.

If you are implementing this change for all users, type gpedit.msc in the run box dialog and press Enter. For this article, we will continue the implementation of the Local Group Policy for all users.

However, if you intend to implement the change for specific users/groups or for all users except administrators, type mmc.exe in the run box dialog and hit Enter.

In both cases above, you may be questioned by the UAC whether you want to allow the program to make changes to your computer. Say Yes, and continue.

Step 2: Enter the Windows Components.

This will allow you to go down into User Configuration, from there to Administrative Templates, and finally to Windows Components.

Step3: Go to the Windows Store.

Under the Windows Components, you will find the option Store.

Step 4: Turn off the Store.

On the right-hand side, under the Store column, you can see the option to turn off the Store, which was not configured initially. To configure it, you will have to double-click on the option.

This will bring you to three radio buttons as shown below. Initially, the button Not Configured will be marked. You must switch the button from Not Configured to Enabled. Click OK once this is done.

Step5: Make it Effective.

To allow this action to take effect, you need to enforce the updated policy. Press Windows Key+R again to open the run box dialog. In the run box, you must type gpupdate /force, and click on OK.

Step 6: Testing time

After you have run through the steps above, you would have disabled your Windows Store. To test this try the Windows Store, you should get a message as shown below -

Thus, you have successfully disabled Windows 8 App Store.

However, if you are not sure, whether you will be able to carry out all the steps above and not mess up, there is an even easier method.

You can download a reg file from here. Save the downloaded file onto your desktop. Double-click on this reg file. Now click on Run and say Yes to the UAC prompt. To finish, you will need one Yes and one more OK, before you are done.

You may delete the reg file you downloaded, from your desktop, now, if you like.

Following the advice, you may choose to upgrade or do custom install. For this article, we have chosen to do a custom install of WIndows 7. Step 2: Start the installation

Now click Custom (Advanced)Step 3: Choose where to install

The next question is where you want to install Windows 7. If your hard disk is undivided, you will see it whole.

You can go ahead and proceed with the install by clicking Next, or you may want to partition your hard disk by selecting Drive options (advanced).

If you decide to partition your drive, then click Drive Options (advanced) you will see the screen below:

You can Delete, Format, or create New partitions as required. Once you have finished, you must select the partition where you want Windows 7 to reside. Windows might warn you that it will create additional partitions. Simple click Ok when prompted. (See picture below)
