Honda VTX 1800 – The biggest V-twin I’ve ever ridden

After my summer riding was time to have the bike serviced and for the second time that year I headed down to my mechanic. After talking in the shop for a while as they started to work on my bike I convinced the owner (or was it him that convinced me) to let me try a used Honda VTX 1800 he had just taken in.

That is one huge mother of a bike and it had all the bells and whistles;wind screen, studded saddlebags and a pair of Cobra exhausts.The bike was from 2001 and had 34.000 km (21.000 miles) on the clock.But the previous owner had taken so good care of it that it looked brandnew.

I’ve tried a few of the bigger cruisers and I guess I’ve gotten used to the road capabilities (or lack there of) of that motorcycle type . But the VTX 1800 actually rides, even though with its almost 350 kg (770 lbs) it’s quite a hand full. Well you don’t feel as if you’ve been shot out of a canon when twisting the throttle, but it pulls away real nice. Actually I found my self cruising slowly down the back roads with 110-120 km/t (75 MpH). But I swear Mr. Police it felt like I was going 80 km/t (50 MpH).

The VTX 1800 is very high-tech for a cruiser, having both hydraulic clutch, upside-down fork, cast aluminium wheels and a Dual Combined Brake Pressure Equalization System. The Brake system means that when pressing the back brake some of the pressure is channelled to the front brakes as well. All in all these features makes the VTX a very easy handling and modern cruiser.

There’s no doubt this bike could take you to the end of the world and back with 160 km/t (100 MpH) which is not the case for many of the cruisers out there. But then again should it be? If you are in the market for one of the big eastern cruisers, this bike deserves to be on your short-list. It rides and sounds insane and is technically more advanced than the Motor Company competitors, but it lacks the 100 years of history. So I guess it’s a question of being a HD fan or not, cause the price is almost up there.

The sale is limited to existing stock, so it’s pretty much first come, first served.

FAR - Progressive Suspensions

There are many lowering shocks for touring bikes on the market. Unfortunately many are sacrifying the suspension travel, so the ride comfort.

Our shocks are designed for performance-oriented twin-shock bikes and feature piggyback reservoirs, a high pressure gas charge and deflective disc valving, all packaged in a mono-tube style body.

Progressive-rate springs, threaded preload adjustment and external compression adjustment knob allow for fine tuning to suit rider weight and riding style.
Built around Progressive IAS technology, a Secondary Spring allows both full droop travel and lowered stance for all Harley-davidson models from 1980 to present. Both the shock body and the external piggyback coated internally to reduce friction and are capped with a forged aluminum upper.

The shocks came with a special adjustment tool since don’t work with the standard spanner wrench. You will need to adjust them depending on the amount of luggage you have on board and if you have a passenger.

They are available in stock and varies lengths depend on bike. All length is measured center eye to eye.
The shocks worked fantastic. Bumps are no longer a concern to me or my passenger. The ride feels more responsive in the corners and I haven’t been wearing the kidney belt!

How To Adjust Clutch on a 1979 Harley FXE

To adjust the clutch on your FXE, loosen the lock nut on the cable adjuster on the left side of the seatpost of the frame. Turn the adjuster in as far as it will go.

Now, remove the derby cover and loosen the locknut on the clutch release pushrod adjuster in the center of the clutch assembly. Adjust the push rod release until the clutch release arm is as close to the starter as possible then back it up until it's just about an 1/8 to a 1/4" away from the starter. Lock the lock nut down and reinstall the derby cover.

Now, at the cable adjuster, adjust the adjuster out until you get about an 1/8" freeplay at the lever. This should get you a good release of the clutch.

The important thing is that you must have a bit of freeplay in the clutch lever. Otherwise, your throwout bearing will be against the pushrod constantly and will fail resulting you not being able to release the clutch. If this happens, you'll have to pull the clutch release cover off the right side of the transmission to replace the bearing. It's a little ***** thing about the size of nickle.

XL Heads Offered Over The Years

Unlike the Big Twins, there have been a lot of versions of Sportster and Buell heads offered over the years. This article is provided to shed some light on the differences between them.

1986-1990 (4-Speeds)
The Evolution Sportster was introduced in the 1986 model year in both 883cc and 1100cc configurations. The difference between these displacements was the bore size: an 883 has a 3"

The cylinder heads you'll find on 1986-1990 models are:
A stock 1986 883 chamber is bathtub shaped and has a 49.5cc nominal volume This design provided a squish band over the stock flat top piston, the only year that an Evolution 883 had a squish band. The chamber on an 883 head is shallower than a 1200 chamber and therefore 883 valves are longer to match As a result the valves start out closer to the pistons and closer to each other. This makes 883 heads poor candidates for very large valves or high overlap cams that have high TDC lift figures. Photo courtesy of Pat LaPlante

The stock intake port on an 883 head has a low floor and a very squared off roof through the bowl that necks down to a tiny valve. This creates turbulence and results in poor flow.
883 heads have the same size ports as the 1100/1200 heads until it enters the bowl area, at which time it necks down to the small valve seats. The seats in an 883 head are notorious for being poorly blended into the bowl. A good competition valve job that opens up the seat i.d. and blends it into the bowl does wonders for an 883 head.The seats in any of the 883 heads are the same o.d. as the seats in the 87-03 1100/1200 heads. As such, they can be opened up to accommodate the larger 1.715"/1.480" valve sizes. Standard 1100/1200 valves are too short for the shallow 883 chambers, however, "conversion" valves are readily available that have the larger diameter heads and the longer 883 lengths.

87-90 XL883 Heads: 49.5cc chamber, 1.585" diameter intake valves, 1.350" diameter exhaust valves

1987 and later 883 heads have a 3" round, hemispherical chamber A squish band is still gained, however, when these heads are used over a 3.5" bore 1200 piston The chamber volume and valve sizes remained the same as the 1986 model. An "883" script was also added near the gasket surface .
For 1987, the big change in the 883 head was the chamber shape. It became the 3" round, hemispherical shape that continues to this day.
These heads, and the 5-speed versions, are very common and easy to come by, as many were taken off and replaced with 1200 heads when converting to a 1200. However, as noted above these heads make for a better conversion than the common 88-03 XL1200 head in a couple of ways.Most of these heads are silver, although some late model versions were made in black for specific models such as the XL883R.

1986 XL1100 Heads: 62cc chamber, 1.840" diameter intake valves, 1.610" diameter exhaust valves
These are ultra-rare Sportster heads and they were the best factory head ever made for a Sportster until the Thunderstorm head came out in 1998. They have very large valves and a pear-shaped chamber with flat squish bands on each side. 1991-2003 (5-Speeds) and 1995-2002 Buell

For 1991, the Evolution Sportster got a new 5-speed transmission. HD also made changes to the valvetrain and crankcase breathing that affected the cylinder heads. The cams were relocated to sit directly under the lifters (4 speeds had them slightly offset) and the holes in the head where the pushrods pass through were moved to match. Also the crankcase breather was moved from the cam box cover to the bolts in the heads that had previously just held on the carb and air cleaner. This creates two issues when fitting 5-speed heads to a 4-speed:

1. Since the holes for the pushrod tubes are in a slightly different place, there's a potential for pushrod rub when 5-speed heads are put on a 4-speed or vice-versa
2. If you're going to take advantage of the 5-speed crankcase breathing, your 4-speed lower and middle rocker boxes will need to be swapped to 5-speed versions. Likewise if you're putting 4-speed heads onto a 5-speed, you'll need to modify your heads to allow breathing out the carb bolt holes (Hammer Performance can provide this service) or alternatively, use XB style rocker boxes.

91-03 XL883 Heads:49.5cc chamber, 1.585" diameter intake valves, 1.350" diameter exhaust valves

This is one of the most common Sportster heads you'll come across, as it came on every 1200 Sportster from 1991 through 2003, except the 98-03 XL1200S model. Unfortunately, for performance applications it's not a particularly good head, as the ports are turbulent and the chamber is not, which is just exactly the opposite of what you want. See the pictures below for more information.

The stock intake port on an 88-03 XL1200 head is essentially the same as the 883’s intake port, except the bowl does not have to squeeze down to such a small valve. This is an improvement but it’s still not a very good port due to the low floor and squared off roof through the bowl.

These heads were identical to the 91-03 XL1200 heads described above except that the spark plug side front motor mount bolt hole was 7/16-14 instead of 3/8-16. So be aware that not all Buell heads are higher performance than all Sportster heads.

96-03 Buell Lightning Heads:62cc chamber, 1.715" diameter intake valves, 1.480" diameter exhaust valves
In 1996 a new cylinder head was introduced on Buell S1 Lightning models. They were standard equipment on 1996-1998 S1 models (not S1W), 1997 S3 models, 1997-1998 M2 models, and 1998-2003 1200S Sportster Sport models. The Buell Blast uses a version of this head too. They were also available in the Screamin Eagle catalog, initially with a "Lightning" script in the fin area just below the rocker box, and later with a "Screamin Eagle" script. Versions were offered in silver as well as black with polished fins. Many of the black with polished fins versions (including those on the 1200S) had dual spark plugs as well. Buell versions of these heads use 7/16-14 bolt holes for the front mounting bracket while Sportster versions used 3/8-16.

The Lightning head has the same ports and valve sizes as the XL1200 heads of the same vintage and as such they flow exactly the same. The Screamin Eagle catalog at one time claimed 8% more flow but I've flow tested lots of them and the range of results I get is the same as the standard 88-03 XL1200 heads.

The one big difference in a Lightning head is that extra material was added to the chamber to reduce the size and raise the compression. Over a 1200cc flat top piston these heads give about 10:1 compression. The chamber material is cast into a 10 degree squish band, however, all of the bikes that had these heads from the factory used flat top pistons, so the squish band was ineffective. Hammer Performance offers an angled dome piston to match these heads and can even machine the squish band into a nice, even shape for maximum effectiveness - as cast, it's very rough and uneven.

The big down side to a Lightning head is that the extra material used to make the chamber smaller also ends up shrouding the valves badly. This hurts low-lift flow, and is especially bad when used with larger valves. When we do a SMASH or SLEDGE porting service to a Lightning head, we always unshroud the valves heavily to cure this problem.

98-02 Buell Thunderstorm Heads:67cc chamber, 1.810" diameter intake valves, 1.575" diameter exhaust valves
In 1998 a new cylinder head was introduced on Buell S1W and S3 models. In 1999 these heads were made standard equipment on all Buell models and they remained that way through the 2002 model year.

The Thunderstorm head has multiple improvements over the Lightning head. Not only are the valves significantly bigger, but the ports were improved as well, with a higher floor and a more gently radiused roof through the bowl area. The chamber was enlarged back to 67cc to unshroud the larger valves, and the squish band angle was changed to 15 degrees. These were paired with a factory piston to match and utilize the squish band, which HD had never done on Lightning heads.

A stock Thunderstorm chamber improves on the Lightning chamber by unshrouding the much larger valves. The squish band is also taken out to 15 degrees although it's still a rough, uneven casting with a lot of overhang around the perimeter, making it difficult to achieve a good squish clearance. The unshrouding resulted in a 67cc volume and requires a matching domed piston to get 10:1. Also, you can see in this picture how the roof through the bowl area is more gently radiused, as compared to the picture of the XL1200 chamber above. Look near the stamped numbers and compare.

The stock Thunderstorm intake port improves on the Lightning & 88-03 XL1200 intake port with a somewhat higher floor and more gentle radius through roof area in the bowl. Valve sizes were increased as well.

These are very popular heads to retrofit to Sportster models. They're almost a bolt-on; the only issue you have to deal with is that the front motor mount bolt holes are 7/16-14 instead of the Sportster's 3/8-16. It's generally fairly simple to drill out your factory motor mount however.

Contrary to what you might hear, the springs, retainers, locks, guides, locaters, and valve stem seals are all standard HD pieces in a Thunderstorm head, the exact same part number pieces that you'll find on every other Evolution Sportster and Big Twin head of that era. The Thunderstorm heads do not have any special hardware other than the larger diameter valves.

However, with the introduction of the Shadow RS, Honda is really taking the gloves off to vie for a share of Harley-Davidson’s ubiquitous Sportster market. The Shadow RS looks surprisingly similar to a Sportster, and it offers reasonable performance at a reasonable MSRP of $7799. But before the RS has even gotten off a clean shot, Harley-Davidson appears to have answered right back with its new XL883L Sportster SuperLow, the latest addition to the popularselling family of Milwaukee iron that debuted in 1955. One of six models in the 2011 Sportster clan, it replaces the XL883L Sportster Low (the XL1200C Sportster Custom has also been dropped for 2011), and its chassis has undergone some interesting updates in order to make it the “easiest to handle, most confidence-inspiring Sportster ever,” according to the Motor Company’s press releases. The changes are intended to cultivate more Harley-Davidson riders out of Harley-Davidson’s “Dreamer Pool,” a group of potential customers who have shown a marked interest in the idea of owning a Harley-Davidson.

Honda’s Shadow RS is the latest in a line of Shadow cruisers debuted in 1983 with the Shadow 750 and then branched out into various displacements from 500cc to over 1000cc. Perhaps the most rider-friendly machine in the current Shadow clan, the RS’ upright seating position and roadster styling are clearly aimed at attracting Sportster buyers to the fold, all but demanding that we compare the RS and the Sportster SuperLow to determine who can really claim to be king of the value-priced cruisers.

Engine—Sportster Super Low 1st; Shadow RS 2nd Both the Shadow and the Sportster feature V-twin engines that honor their respective heritages. The Sportster’s ancestral roots date back to the first 45° V-twin Harley-Davidson, which debuted in 1909, but the Sportster underwent a real transfiguration when it was fitted with the alloy-barreled Evolution V-twin in 1986. The Evo’s air-cooled, pushrod-activated twovalve engine is still traditional to the core, but it received a host of updates in 2004, including revised Buell-style XB cylinder heads, lighter pistons and connecting rods, additional cooling fins on the cylinders and heads, and oil jets that spray the undersides of the pistons. Electronic sequential port fuel-injection and updated cams were added in 2007. It also uses hydraulic lifters, which add reliability and eliminate the expense of having to deal with frequent valve adjustments. The Sportster’s single-pin bottom end with “knife and fork” rod architecture remains unchanged. Its 883cc (53.9 cid) displacement is achieved via an undersquare bore and stroke measuring 76.2mm x 96.8mm. Its 8.9:1 compression ratio pistons squeeze the intake charge fed by single 45mm throttle body into the Sportster’s single-plug, two-valve cylinder heads. Spent exhaust gasses then escape through a 2-into-2 exhaust system with a crossover tube. The Shadow RS’ 52° V-twin has a more modern lineage, dating back to 1998, when it was introduced as a successor to the original Shadow’s 45° V-twin, which was clearly an attempt to copy the vee angle of Harley-Davidson. As such, its design includes modern conveniences such as liquid-cooling, a vibration- reducing counterbalancer and overhead camshafts that operate its three-valve (two 26mm intake, one 33mm exhaust) cylinder heads, which are fed by Honda’s PGM-FI fuel-injection through a Keihin 34mm throttle body. Its valvetrain uses simple screw and locknut adjusters to keep its valves within spec., but these do add maintenance time to the RS.

Unlike the Harley, the Honda’s connecting rods are offset, but they ride on a single crankpin. The engine features a slightly oversquare bore and stroke, measuring 79.0mm x 76.0mm. Its multi-valve heads and liquid-cooling also allow for a highercompression to squeeze more power out of its 745cc (45.4 cid) without detonation. We expected that the Sportster’s 138cc displacement advantage would make it a winner in the battle for Harley-Davidson Sportster 883 vs. Honda Shadow RS by Scott Rousseau Model Evaluation An age-old rivalry is renewed with this pair of V-twin roadsters. So which one rules the road? Scott Rousseau dyno supremacy, and the Harley didn’t disappoint us. Rated by the factory at 55 lb.-ft. of peak torque @ 3500 rpm at the crankshaft, our test Sportster pumped out 47.5 rear-wheel hp @ 5900 rpm before smacking into its 6000-rpm rev limiter. Its peak torque of 48.02 lb.-ft. occurred at 3900 rpm, but typical of a Milwaukee V-twin, the torque curve was broad and flat, never dipping below 41 lb.-ft. throughout the useable rev range. The Shadow motor isn’t as strong, but it still posted respectable numbers despite its displacement handicap, generating 37.79 rear-wheel hp @ 5300 rpm and 41.45 lb.-ft. of torque @ 3500 rpm. A look at the dyno graph also shows that the Shadow’s torque spread remains above 40 lb.-ft. only from 3000-4300 rpm. With its overhead cam design, we would’ve expected the Honda to make a little more power closer to its 6300 rpm redline, but it just isn’t there.
The Sportster’s healthier engine performance manifested itself in performance testing as well. It recorded a slightly slower top speed of 105.2 mph compared to the Shadow’s 109.8 mph, but it cleaned house in our acceleration trials, zipping from 0–60mph in 6.37 sec. en route to a best quarter mile run of 14.60 sec. @ 89.15 mph. Try as we might, we could not get the Shadow to break into the 14s. Its best quarter-mile run was 15.32 secs. @ 82.58 mph while going from 0–60 mph in 7.02 secs. In the real world, both machines are adequate for their intended roaming about town or short excursions, and both offer acceptable throttle response with a linear engine feel. It’s just that the Sportster offers more grunt everywhere.

Transmission—Honda 1st Clutch—H-D 1st Both machines use cable-operated clutches and five-speed transmissions, and the Honda’s clutch and shifting action can best be described as silky, while the Harley’s clutch pull is heavier and its shifting clunkier. Harley has made great strides in improving quality in these areas, but still has a long way to go to match the smoothness and consistency of the Honda’s transmission. But while the Honda narrows the overall gap by offering a lighter, smoother clutch pull, we did notice a tendency for the clutch to slip under the strain of heavy acceleration. This was most obvious when launching from a standing start while applying a lot of throttle, and it raises a concern about the clutch’s long-term durability. The Harley’s clutch pull may be heavier, but its engagement is more positive, something that certainly helped it during our quarter-mile testing. The broader torque spread of the Harley engine means that you can get away with fewer shifts, and when cruising along in top gear, there is a noticeable difference in gearing. The Sportster’s final drive has been relaxed with the addition of a one tooth larger front sprocket, allowing it to purr down the road at 70 mph. We can’t accuse the Honda of being undergeared, but its secondary vibration does creep through the hand controls at 70 mph, 10 mph sooner than the Harley- Davidson. That could be a consideration if long highway trips are part of your riding agenda.Lastly, the Shadow RS uses a chain rather than a shaft final drive. We would applaud this move more if the Honda were equipped with a rear disc brake, as it would open a wealth of wheel/tire choices. As it is, the chain’s simplicity is overshadowed (no pun intended) by the Harley’s belt drive, which is practically maintenance-free.

Chassis, Suspension & Handling—Tie The Sportster’s last major chassis renovations came in 2004, when its steel chassis received rubber engine mounts in an effort to quell vibration and kill off its negative “paint shaker” reputation. As the engine was no longer a stressed member of the chassis, H-D engineers regained the lost rigidity via a 3/4" increase in the thickness of the backbone, going from 1 5/8" to 2 1/8". The changes marked a significant improvement in both vibration reduction and torsional stiffness (a 26% increase), but the downside was that the chassis gained 60 lbs. in the process. Such a weight increase was bound to adversely affect the Sportster’s steering, not that the Sportster could ever be accused of being quick-handling in the first place.

So to understand the changes that have been made to the Sportster Super Low, one must first understand that—perhaps for the first time ever—Harley- Davidson perceives this particular Sportster as a “beginner’s bike,” a vehicle it hopes will attract more first-time motorcycle buyers to the brand. As 25% of Harley’s customers are also new to motorcycling, it only makes sense to have such a bike in the fleet, thus the Super Low’s 59.3" wheelbase chassis has been modified to accommodate newcomers. H-D engineers started by changing the triple clamp offset to increase rake from 29.6° to 31° and increase trail from 4.6" to 5.7". That might sound like a step in the wrong direction, but Harley engineers then decreased both the front wheel’s weight and diameter to quicken its steering, taking it from 19" to 18", and they also increased the amount of steering radius from lock to lock. At the same time, the rear wheel diameter was increased from 16" to 17".
Funny enough, the Super Low isn’t lower than the Sportster Low that it is replacing, it’s actually a tad taller in all respects. Its non-adjustable 39mm Showa fork actually offers 4.26" of suspension travel (vs. the Low’s 3.62"), and its preload adjustable-only twin coil-over rear shocks boast an underwhelming 2.12" of rear wheel travel while the Low’s rear wheel travel was a scant 1.63."
Honda doesn’t expressly market the Shadow as a beginner’s motorcycle, but its chassis geometry numbers and suspension components tend to fall right in line with the Harley’s. The Shadow RS’ steel chassis has a slightly longer 61.5" wheelbase and a slightly more relaxed 32° rake but a shorter 5.27" of trail. It, too, is equipped with Showa suspension components, but they offer more suspension travel than the Harley’s. The Shadow’s 41mm conventional fork provides 4.6" of travel, while its dual shocks offer preload adjustability only and 3.5" of travel.
So, which motorcycle handles better, and which has the better suspension? It really depends on what kind of rider is aboard either machine. For casual cruising, the Shadow is an excellent mount, offering a steady feel with comparatively light steering while maintaining excellent stability. It almost encourages you to ride it faster, but as you do, the steering begins to feel vague and the front tire less than planted on the road. The Shadow is also slower to respond when hustling it from side-to-side through sweeping corners. Overall, the Shadow shows its true spirit when the pace isn’t so spirited. By contrast, the Harley-Davidson’ssteering is more deliberate, though it tends to feel better when ridden more aggressively. That’s when its chassis really comes into its own, offering precise steering and excellent feedback from its front tire. In fact, it could be the best handling XL ever (remember, Harley’s newest performance Sportster, the XR1200X, is actually designated as an “XR”), but the problem with the Super Low—and it’s a big problem—is that it possesses ground clearance that can best be described as sorely lacking. With a claimed 24.7° of available lean angle on the right and just 24.4° on the left, the Super Low offers precious little lean angle before its peg feelers begin to gouge the pavement, and it is very easy to snap them off entirely during cornering at what might seem to most MCN readers as a slow-tomoderate pace. Experienced riders soon learn to use special cornering lines and exaggerated body English to guide the Sportster through tighter corners without scraping the feelers at faster speeds—that is, if they haven’t already gone missing in action, exposing the clutch cover on the left and the exhaust pipes on the right to serious road rash. If the Sportster has a single serious flaw, this is it.
The Shadow’s fork and shocks are fine for casual cruising, but upping the pace reveals that both ends are light on damping, and cornering at a moderate pace tends to make the suspension pogo up and down too much. The Harley is just the opposite. It feels very rigid until ridden with some aggression. Then, somehow, its scant travel seems to come into its own and provides a very controlled ride best characterized as being on the taut side. In the end, we left this category as a draw. In theory, the Harley- Davidson has better handling and suspension than the Honda, but neither in sufficient quantity to give it a clear advantage and certainly not enough to offset its terrible lean angle issue.

Riding Impression—Tie If both of these machines are designed to attract beginner riders, then both should find favor with them. They offer tough, Unfortunately for the Honda, most of its best detail work is on the inside. Honda’s engineering has a welldeserved reputation for quality and durability, but on the outside the Shadow RS is a very stark, very plain-looking motorcycle that actually looks like a cheap imitation of the Sportster when the two are placed side by side. Its blacked-out engine looks unfinished next to the Super- Low’s and its drum brake looks like it was pirated from an early 1970s CB750. We’re well aware that looks aren’t everything, and the RS certainly isn’t unattractive, but if its purpose is to lure customers who might otherwise be considering a Sportster model, it doesn’t offer nearly as much eye candy as a Harley.

Overall—Sportster Super Low 1st; Shadow RS 2nd This comparison really isn’t as close as it appears. Neither of these motorcycles is perfect, but both should satisfy demand for a low-cost, easy-to-ride cruiser, and both make a great, “next step up” for novice riders ready to trade a lightweight machine for something bigger. The Shadow RS is a balanced package, but it could use a bit more grunt. If the RS were an 850, perhaps the outcome of this comparison might have been in doubt. Honda should also address its uncomfortable seat and bin that drum rear brake. For the most part, the Harley-Davidson Sportster SuperLow upholds its family tradition of providing a solid-performing, good-looking and relatively economical entry into the club of Harley ownership. Its lack of lean angle is appalling, and yet it still handles well and offers an enjoyable riding experience. As roadster-style cruisers go, the Sportster SuperLow is as real as it gets, and that’s what makes it the winner here.

Custom Derby Cover

In this project, we had the chance to redesign and produce a motorcycle derby cover for the famed Harley Davidson. Working on top of anexisting derby cover, the client provided us with a concept artwork for thenew design. With the model file of the derby cover and the artwork in hand,we set out to do what we do best, turning visions into reality.

Challenges Ahead
One of the first challenges we face is on the artwork itself. With sophisticated and organic details, there is simplyno way to make a truthful representation of that from within the computer. On the other hand, as the entire cover iscircled by the bandolier detail, it is simply impossible to keep them aligned symmetrically in the hand sculptingprocess. Also of concern is the size. To be able to cut such a big piece we have to resort to large-scale CNC mills inproduction, as well as a large-scale plastic injector in the latter stages of the production.

The Workflow
The concept artwork provided comes with an imposing skull motif, flanked by glorious spreadingwings. These delicate and fluidic details are truthfully reproduced by our resident sculpting artist with clay into thespecified dimensions. The sculpted piece is then scanned in detail by the NEO HD3000 Laser Scanner into a CADfile. Combining the scanned model with the digitally created bandolier details, design elements are finalized beforefinally merging with the pre-existing derby cover surface, again from within the CAD software.

From concept art to a sculpted piece to a final product, the entire project took only 10 days with merely 4 hoursspent on laser scanning, and 2 hours spent on cleaning up the background noises in the scan.

With the concept artwork in hand, the more delicate details as in the skull & wings are hand-sculptedwith clay to the specified dimensions.

The sculpted piece is then scanned in high resolution by NEO HD3000 Laser Scanner into a CAD file. The bandolier detail is created digitally, before merging with the scanned CAD file.

After finalizing all design elements, the new design is applied to the surface of a derby coverwithin the CAD software.

The piece is first cut in polycarbonate to test the tool paths.
Once it’s all set a large-scale CNC mill is in use for production. Zinc Die Casting was then performed.
From the concept artwork to a finished product, the whole project took only 6 days with merely 4 hours spent on laser scanning and 2 hours spent on cleaning up the background noise in the scan.

Innovations

NEO HD3000 Laser Scanner is no doubt a crucial part for the speed and quality this project isexecuted. Powered by NEOScan technologies, the HD3000 is more than equipped to scan thesculpted clay prototype in minute detail. Aside from this, basic manipulation like resizing can bedone easily from within the scanning software. With the NEO HD3000 Laser Scanner, all detailsare represented beautifully and accurately in a relatively short period of time.

ABS on Harley

The ABS brake option was offered first on motorcycles by BMW in 1988. In the Harley Davidson world it’s been around since 2005 in law enforcement service and in standard Touring models and V-Rods since 2008. ABS is now available on both Softail and Dyna models as well.

Often folks ask us whether or not it’s a good choice as an extra expense on their new Harley. It’s not an easy question to answer briefly, mainly because ABS on a motorcycle is a very different beast than ABS on a car. The reason is that ABS in a four-wheeled vehicle will help you maintain control in hard-braking situations even when turning or cornering; not so on your beloved Hog.

Harley Davidson’s own Anti-Lock Braking System dvd, which comes with any new Harley equipped with ABS, and can also be viewed on You Tube, is quick to point out that the system helps the rider maintain control in “straight line emergency situations,” and that it isn’t a “cure-all.” This is not merely a CYA statement the lawyers came up with; it is also an important precursor to instructing riders how to use ABS properly.

The way ABS works in both two- and four-wheeled vehicles is that an electronic sensor notices wheel speed during emergency brake application and subsequently modulates brake pressure with a pulsing that applies and releases the brake calipers on the rotors rapidly. This prevents the wheels from locking up. Wheel lockup while riding a motorcycle, particularly on wet or icy pavement, leaves, gravel or any other unstable surface, can cause a loss of control that allows the motorcycle to basically slip out from under itself. Preventing wheel lockup helps keep the bike upright.

The big difference is that ABS on a motorcycle—though a milestone safety innovation—has more limited utility than ABS in a car. The simple fact is, you have to be upright and your wheels have to be straight when braking in an emergency for motorcycle ABS to be effective. The Harley dvd is a very good teaching tool in this regard. First, the narrator tells us several times that the system only works if you apply hard brake pressure and keep it applied. Second, they show an emergency scenario where the riders have the luxury of having enough safe road surface to actually upright the bike while already leaned into a curve before braking hard. In other words, they cross lanes and head for the opposite shoulder of the road during the emergency event, which looks dangerous, but is far less dangerous than applying full brake pressure while still leaned over. But to keep things simple, let’s just say that ABS can help if you’re going straight. Period.

Bottom line? It’s your choice. For me, riding in Florida means deer dashing across the highway once in awhile. Riding in the city limits of sunny West Palm Beach unfortunately means the occasional instant traffic jam that results in a multi-car pileup. In such situations, rare though they may be, I for one will be ever grateful for the ABS brakes on my Road King.
