Congratulations to Cypress Creek Lakes resident Elise Rasmussen. Elise is on the 12 Mizuno Volleyball team at Texas Tornadoes which has qualified for the Junior Olympics this summer. She plays middle and outside and will be eligible to play 12's again next year.

Cypress Creek Lakes Summer Movie Nights

Cypress Creek Lakes has announced the movie line up for it's Summer 2013 Movie Nights Under the Stars!

On Saturday, June 22, residents will enjoy "Up". "Wreck it Ralph" will be shown on July 20th and "Monsters, Inc." will be the main feature on August 10th.

Movies start at dusk and free ice cream will be served starting one hour prior to the shows. The events will be held at the new Phase 3 Recreation Center.

CFISD education partners win statewide awards

In honor of National Volunteer Month, the CFISD Board of Trustees recognized volunteer and business partner state award winners during the regularly scheduled Board meeting on April 8.

Five state award winners were recognized during an awards luncheon at the Texas Association of Partners in Education (TAPE) annual conference in Austin on Jan. 29. The partners in education were also recognized during the Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS) Appreciation Luncheon on April 5.

VIPS Executive Board Chairman Celeste Heath accepted a Crystal Award on behalf of the VIPS Executive Board and the Partners in Education (PIE) department in the Special Event Award category for the annual VIPS Appreciation Luncheon.

“The importance of recognizing volunteer and business support is essential to a thriving partnership program and our district considers it important that we celebrate the incredible support we all enjoy from our community,” said Pam Scott, PIE director. “The Appreciation Luncheon is special because we remind our stakeholders who serve as volunteers and partners they are special to all of us no matter their role and that they are an integral part of the district team.”

Director of transportation Rick Terrell accepted a Crystal Award on behalf of the PIE and Transportation departments in the Partnership Program for Innovation category for the Bus Buddies Program. The program was created to help ensure safe, effective and efficient transportation for the district’s youngest students by assigning a volunteer “Bus Buddy” to ride on every elementary school bus each afternoon for the first three days of the school year.

“The Transportation and Partners in Education departments enjoy working as one team recruiting community volunteers to be the ‘Buddies’ who will help the students and support each of our outstanding drivers,” Scott said.

Mary Kegarise accepted a Crystal Award for the Community Partnership Academic Impact Award category for the BAK-PAK Critters Reading Program. The mission of the program is to use specially trained teams of adults and dogs to improve the literacy skills of at-risk students in schools.

“Students who never felt comfortable reading aloud love reading to their special four-legged friends,” Scott said. “In addition to their academic improvements, there have also been marked behavioral and attitude improvements that have led to improved student success.”

Harris County Municipal Utility District No. 167 won a Gold Award in the Community Partnership Health Impact category for providing shade, covers, tables, benches and trees to the staff and students at McFee Elementary School.

“While offering more comfort and protection to our students during recess time, these outdoor additions have also provided the opportunity to extend the classroom to the outdoors,” Scott said.

Postma Elementary School VIPS co-coordinator and PTO Board member Carolina Rodriguez won a Gold Award in the Individual Volunteer Role Model category for helping recruit and retain Spanish-speaking volunteers at the school.

“She reaches out to volunteers who may feel uncomfortable because of their limited English and shows them how important their involvement is to our students and to the school and encourages them to be active,” Scott said.

Commercial development on rise along Fry Road corridor in Cypress

Six months after opening two other Cy-Fair locations, H-E-B has purchased a 15-acre parcel of land in the future mixed-use Cypress Creek Town Center. Located at the corner of Tuckerton and Fry roads, the 90-acre development will feature commercial and retail options when construction begins on the project in the coming years.

Although there is not yet a timetable for the future H-E-B, the purchase was prompted by the area’s continued population growth and density, said Cyndy Garza, public affairs director for H-E-B.

“As that community continues to grow, there are certainly opportunities for H-E-B and our growth,” she said.

Work on the town center will not begin until H-E-B moves forward with the future store, but about a mile north down Fry Road from the future town center site, Mischer Development and Hunington Properties have begun construction on the Shops at Cypress Creek Lakes, a 30,000-square-foot retail center.

The site is expected to be complete by this fall and will include a mix of commercial tenants, including a dentist, sandwich shop, donut store, dry cleaner, nail spa, a veterinarian, martial arts studio, smoothie shop and a dance center. Work is expected to be completed on the shopping center by this fall.

Residential growth in Cypress was a major contributing factor in Mischer Development’s decision to begin commercial projects in the community, said David Nussbaum, senior vice president of development for Mischer.

“There’s tremendous household growth out there between Cypress Creek Lakes, Towne Lake, Bridgeland and Fairfield,” he said. “The natural cycle of things is to get household growth and retail services will follow.”

The construction of several new Cy-Fair ISD schools inside Towne Lake and Bridgeland has also contributed to growth in the Cypress area, said Randy Corson, vice president of residential development for Mischer.

“You’re adding 700 homes within the confines of a two or three mile square radius with the epicenter being from Cypress North Houston Road to Tuckerton and the east side of Barker Cypress to Fry Road in the west,” he said. “That’s a lot of families moving in, and you need all those retail applications to service the residents.”

As development continues to pick up along Fry Road in Cypress, it will only be at certain major intersections, since there is limited commercial property along the frontage road.

“We think it will make that area more attractive, traffic will flow better, and it helps the retail market to know there won’t be too much competition,” Nussbaum said.

Elizabeth Smart to speak at TRMC celebration for Healthy Woman program

Tomball Regional Medical Center’s Healthy Woman program will celebrate the first anniversary on May, where guests will hear the inspirational story of kidnapping survivor Elizabeth Smart.

Her topic is “Overcoming Adversity” and the event will take place at the Berry Center, 8877 Barker Cypress in Cypress, offering a free health screenings and a wide variety of partner booths featuring products and services of interest to women.

For women, fulfilling the varied roles and responsibilities required of them – mother, daughter, caregiver, friend, mentor, volunteer or career professional, not to mention finding time to care for themselves – is a challenge. Cy Ranch High School Students Advance to Texas Science Olympiad

A whopping 14 students form Cy- Ranch High School are advancing from the regional science Olympiad to the Texas Science Olympiad, the statewide competition that will be held on Texas A&M campus on May 3 and 4.

The first place team in Anatomy & Physiology is Kristin Graham and Ramya Komaragiri, for Boomilever, Merrick Lucas and Judson Gerow were the first place winners, and then for We’ve Got Your Number, Lyee Chong and Naeem Quddus took first place. The second place teams from Cy-Ranch are Tariq Zahroof and sophomore Terrence Park in Thermodynamics, junior Meghana Koleti and sophomore Rahul Zahroof in Disease Detective, and finally, Dylan Furlong and William Baird for Gravity Vehicle. The third place team from Cy-Ranch consist of senior Lyee Chong and sophomore Terrence Park. They placed in Remote Sensing, and they are going to state as well.

Cypress Ranch Wins Both District Tennis Titles

Tennis is a challenging sport but the Cypress Ranch High School boys’ and girls’ tennis teams should be congratulated. They both won the district titles at the district meet held last week at Cypress Woods High School.The first- and second-place winners in boys’ and girls’ singles and doubles and mixed doubles qualified for the Region III-5A Tennis Championships, scheduled for April 16-17 at Deer Park High School.

Cypress Creek Lakes Announces Retail and Commercial Expansion

Mischer Development, developer of the 1600-acre master-planned Cypress Creek Lakes community, has recently started commercial and retail expansion on several reserves within the 1600 acre development. Cypress Creek Lakes is located in the US 290 corridor south of Cypress Creek on the east side of Fry Road. H-E-B purchased 15 acres on the northeast corner of Tuckerton and Fry Road. This parcel of land is within the 90 acre mixed use reserve that will be known as the Cypress Creek Lakes Town Center. Tuckerton Road was expanded last year in cooperation with Harris County Precinct 3 and now provides area residents roadway access from Fry Road eastwards to Huffmeister Road offering an alternative route to US-290.

H-E-B has not yet announced a time table for the use of the property. Growth in the Cypress area has caused grocery retailers to open new and refurbish existing stores. H-E-B recently opened two Cypress area stores: one near Jersey Village and the second in Fairfield. These are in addition to H-E-B’s Cypress, Vintage Park, and Tomball locations.

Mischer Development has also commenced construction on a 30,000 square foot retail center at Fry Road and Cypress North Houston. The Center will be known as the Shops at Cypress Creek Lakes and tenants will include a mix of medical, dental, retail, restaurants and other service providers. The Shops at Cypress Creek Lakes will be open late fall of this year.

Retailers in the Shops at Cypress Creek Lakes will join McDonalds, Timewise Convenience Store, and the Goddard School, which all recently opened, in providing convenience to Cypress Creek Lakes families and other area residents.

Easter Bunny at Willowbrook Mall

If you missed the Easter Bunny this weekend at Cypress Creek Lakes, don’t worry, we’ve heard that he is still at Willowbrook Mall. He will be there every day from March 9th until the 30th, so bring your whole family and get your picture taken with him!

The Easter Bunny will be at the Bloomingdale’s Exhibit Court everyday Monday- Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sundays from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. If you go don’t be afraid if he’s not there right away; the Easter Bunny does need to take some carrot breaks now and then throughout the day.

Ashton Woods Homes has been named the #1 Most Trusted Builder in America, according to the new Lifestory Research Most Trusted Builders in America Study SM.

The ground-breaking national research included more than 21,500 new-home shoppers and 133 home builder brands in the top 27 housing markets in the United States.
