The 8th Senate Is The Real Enemy Of Democracy Not IGP Idris By Bala Ibrahim

In the heat of Police investigations into the crimes Mr. Melaye was being accused of, he was intercepted at the Airport trying to leave the country and was detained by the men of the Nigerian Immigration Service, his passport having been seized. The "distinguished" Senator snatched his passport from the Immigration officers and ran out of the custody of the Immigration Service to the residence of the Senate President who harbored him for some time before he sneaked to his house.

Bala Ibrahim The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, on Wednesday the 9th of May, 2018, said it made a resolution declaring the Inspector General of Police (IGP) "Enemy of Democracy". The Senate said by this resolution, the IGP has been rendered unfit to hold any public office henceforth in Nigeria or elsewhere.

Obviously, the Senate was irked by the inability of the IGP to appear personally before it in response to its invitation to him in relation to the arrest, escape from custody, hospitalization, and arraignment of one of its own, Senator Dino Melaye.

Mr. Melaye was invited by the Nigeria Police in connection with a criminal offense, and he refused to honor the invitation. A letter was written by the Police to the President of the Senate, Bokola Saraka to intervene and convince Mr. Melaye to respond to the invitation. Still, Mr. Melaye refused to respond.

In the heat of Police investigations into the crimes Mr. Melaye was being accused of, he was intercepted at the Airport trying to leave the country and was detained by the men of the Nigerian Immigration Service, his passport having been seized. The "distinguished" Senator snatched his passport from the Immigration officers and ran out of the custody of the Immigration Service to the residence of the Senate President who harbored him for some time before he sneaked to his house.

Mr. Melaye was later arrested at his home and was being taken to court in Lokoja when the convoy was waylaid by hoodlums who distracted the Police and paved way for him to jump out and escape from Police custody. He was later Re-arrested the same way the hoodlums who masterminded his escape were arrested. They turned out to be his brother and cousin. Both are already facing prosecution at the appropriate courts.

He was taken to the National Hospital where he stayed for days before doctors officially certified him fit to be discharged. In fact, doctors' report has it that there was virtually no health issue that could hinder any of his activities. But the Senator deliberately refused to leave the hospital, causing the Police to take him to the court on a stretcher. The Police were convinced that he was only playing tricks, having observed him to be entertaining his visitors with songs and delirious dance steps.

It was over this matter that the Senate wanted the IGP to appear before it. At a time when the country is being faced with so much security issues that require the rapt attention of the Police chief, he decided to send a representative, a Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operation. The Senate was not impressed; they wanted the man who at that time was in Kaduna state, where over 60 Nigerians lost their lives to gunmen attacks.

Why the Senate would not want a representative of the IGP beats the imagination. These are people who are in the red chambers as representatives of about 180 million Nigerians. One would have expected that the principle of representation is already part of their system.

It is also clear, by virtue of the provisions of the Police Act, that a Deputy Inspector General of Police and an Assistant Inspector General of Police are technically IGPs. Since the letter to the IGP was not addressed Ibrahim Idris as an individual, but to the office of the IGP, any of the designated IGPs can as well do. In fact, the DIG in charge of operations is surely the most appropriate to provide all relevant information regarding the Melaye saga.

Now, by declaring the IGP "Enemy of Democracy" and unfit to hold public office henceforth, the Senate is only treading a familiar rough ground. It did same in a matter involving it and the incumbent governor of Kaduna state. The Nigerian courts, in 2004 declared such a resolution null and void. Today, the same El-Rufai that the Senate said is unfit to hold public office is a sitting governor, validly elected by the people of Kaduna state.

This 8th Senate, which has the highest number of docked members so far in the history of the Nigerian Senate, including its president Bukola Saraki, has a worrisome penchant for unruly behavior and disregard for law and order. Otherwise, how does one explain away the refusal of a Senator to honor invitation over an alleged crime? More dramatic was the commissioning of hoodlums to obstruct the process of justice. And most unexpected was the attempt to escape from lawful custody, itself a criminal act. From the same Senate came a senator, who stormed the plenary, wreak havoc, and abduct the Mace. This says a lot about the level of seriousness, sanity and lawful conduct of our Senate members. How does a Senate that perpetrates thuggery and refused to pass the budget, six months after it was presented to them, expect to be taken seriously by serious people?

It is important that our Senators do everything within their capacity to uphold the sanctity of the Senate of the Federal Republic by abstaining from uncultured, uncivilized, undemocratic and immature behavior. When they do that, they will command the respect of all.

Why I Refused to Honour Senate invitation – IGP Idris

The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, on Wednesday described Nigerian senators as people who are trying to blackmail him into perverting the course of justice. Mr Idris, who refused to honour two previous summons by the Senate, said he failed to appear for a third time Wednesday because he found no reason to do so, having learnt that the invitation was “a deliberate blackmail, witch-hunting, unfortunate and mischievous” on the part of senators.

An enraged Senate on Wednesday afternoon proclaimed Mr Idris an “enemy of democracy” who is “unfit to hold any public office within and outside Nigeria.”

Mr Idris had failed to appear before the Senate on two previous occasions after lawmakers asked him to come and brief them on the killings that have taken unprecedented dimensions under his watch as top security chief. The lawmakers also planned to ask the police chief questions around the ongoing face-off between the police and one of their colleagues, Dino Melaye.

Mr Melaye, the senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, has been receiving treatment at the hospital since reportedly jumping out of a moving police vehicle after police officers allegedly sprayed tear gas at him on May 24.

Mr Idris has repeatedly said he will not honour the invitation, citing sections of the Constitution and extant police statutes that appear to support his stance.

“In accordance with the extant laws in Nigeria, the functions, duties and responsibilities of the Inspector General of Police as stated in Section 215(1a) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, and the Police Act and Regulations Section 309(1) can also be carried out as mentioned in sections 7(1),312(1), 313(2) of the Police Act and Regulations by a senior officer of the Force of the Rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police or an Assistant Inspector General of Police who if permitted by the Inspector General of Police to act on his behalf or represent him in an official capacity at any official function, event or programme within and outside Nigeria can do so in consonant with the provisions of the Police Act and Regulations,” Mr Idris said Wednesday night in a statement signed by police spokesperson, Jimoh Moshood.

Mr Moshood, an assistant police commissioner, said Mr Idris had delegated some of his subordinates to represent him before the lawmakers, an option the senators strongly rejected, mandating Mr Idris’ appearance in person rather than through a surrogate.
Nigerian Senate

Mr Idris said he informed Mr Saraki in a warning letter on Tuesday that he would not be honouring Senate’s invitation again on Wednesday. He said he saw Wednesday’s attack on his person by the senators as “deliberate blackmail, witch-hunting with mischievous motives to hand-twist” him “to pervert the end of justice in a felonious and serious offenses” relating to Mr Melaye.

Mr Idris’ latest defiance is the latest in a string of stand-offs by appointees of President Muhammadu Buhari against the National Assembly. A stalemate between senators and the Comptroller-General of Customs, Hameed Ali,‎ occured months ago when the lawmakers asked Mr Ali, a retired colonel, to wear Customs uniform, to conform with tradition of the institution he represents, whenever he is billed to appear before them. Mr Ali rejected that demand.

Mr Buhari did not openly intervene in the matter at the time, and it was not immediately clear what he is doing to prevent further standoff between his aides and the legislature.

On Monday, Mr Saraki and Speaker Yakubu Dogara said they met with Mr Buhari at the State House to discuss the attitude of Mr Idris amongst other national issues.

When Mr Idris failed to appear before the senators for the second time, Mr Saraki highlighted the worrisome pattern in the Inspector-General’s overall conduct, saying he was not surprised because Mr Idris repeatedly ignored even the president himself.

Mr Idris was summoned to relocate to Benue State following the deadly attacks on villagers there in January, but the police chief barely spent three days before departing the restive North-central altogether. Over a month later, Mr Buhari expressed shocke‎ when told by Benue residents during a condolence visit there that Mr Idris flouted his order.

The next day, the State House released a statement saying Mr Idris was summoned and queried by the president. But Mr Idris fired back , saying he was never summoned and challenging administration officials who issued the statement to show evidence of his being queried.
The presidency has remained quiet on that matter ever since.

Following the meeting with Messrs Saraki and Dogara on Monday, Mr Buhari reportedly told them he would look into Mr Idris’ action; but the tone of the police chief’s latest statement indicates little progress on the part of the president.

Breaking News: Inspector General of Police's Office Declared Vacant by Senate

Rising from its closed door session, President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, said the lawmakers revolved to declare the IG persona non grata, stressing that he is not fit to hold any public office in Nigeria or any other country.

According to Fabmimi's blog, Saraki recalled that a court, which the Police boss approached over his earlier invitation by the Senate, ‎ruled that the lawmakers had the powers to summon him or any other public officer.

The Senate President said the lawmakers also resolved that the leadership of the chamber would make further considerations on the matter.

Ekiti 2018: Atiku reacts as Olusola emerges PDP guber candidate

Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has reacted to the emergence of deputy governor of Ekiti State, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate. It was reported by DAILY POST that Olusola polled 1,191 votes to beat former party spokesman, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, who polled 770 votes.

Reacting to the victory, the Waziri of Adamawa congratulated the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP for a very peaceful, free and fair primaries.

Meanwhile Abubakar in a tweet, wrote, "I wish to congratulate our great party, @OfficialPDPNig on the very peaceful, free and fair primaries just held in Ekiti. "I urge all others to rally round our gubernatorial candidate to win the July election." The voting, which started with the members of the state executive, was done according to local government areas. The total number of votes were 1,968, while 7 were void.

In his reaction, Olusola said: "I appreciate God and thank the committee for doing a good job. I thank Prince Adeyeye and Senator Olujimi for their courage. "

Be that as it may, there are quite a number of characters you are likely to meet at a club, and in this post we have summed them up for you.

The Wall Gecko
The Wall Gecko’s are easily noticeable when you get into the club. They are the ones you wonder why they left their house in the first place. They do not dance, or get up from their seats except to pee in the bathroom or to apply powder on noses they’ve been putting in the air at everyone all night. They usually chose a spot to seat that is near an electric socket, I’ve seen some come with their extension cords just to charge their phones. At the peak of the popularity of selfie-sticks, they were the champions of those. Taking a ton of pictures and clattering their long artificial nails on their phone keyboard endlessly but do nothing else in the club. They are also the Snapchatters and Whatsapp Story Tellers. When tired of the scenery, you will find them leaving to their home or hotel room.

The Shaku Shaku Masters
Shaku Shaku is the dance of the season now so lets go with it. But these set of people are the best dancers in the club, amazing energy through the night, usually they are connoisseurs of different eras of hit songs, and for every jam the DJ is putting on they know the lyrics, sing along and pull off a dance move for every song. The Talkative
I don’t understand going to the club to gist. There is a reason the speakers are at a full blast and you cant hear yourself thinking. You aren’t meant to be having conversations in the club. But you cant help having discussion moguls in the club. They like to look important and business like. Huddled in their table you’ll think they are attempting to choose the next president from their own little cabal, or find a cure to why my bank attempt is always broke. Good thing though is that they order well, and y awkward young chaps who haven’t gotten a hang of what to do when in the club scene. To tell they actually mean well, they end up talking to a girl on the night and talk her ears off about this new app they are building.

Miss Social 2018
These set of people in the club know everyone. If they are your date for the night don’t get offended by them having to greet and hug every guy and girl who walks in. They are known in and out of the club scenes, have lots of friends, know the DJs, and are basically in the trench of the new generation socialites taking over from the Ovation type ones.

The Drunks
Not everyone’s favorite group of clubbers. Two things, people in these group either can’t hold in their alcohol or the night doesn’t end well for them if they aren’t out cold drunk and nursing a hangover for the next 18 hours. Maybe you have a friend or two in this group, or maybe it is even you, it’s great you’re a real party goer and maybe even the life of the party, but having to deal with a drunk on a night out isn’t always pleasant. Besides, moderation in everything always makes it better.

Mr. I Know the Owner of the Club
The Braggers and the Braggados. These group of clubbers would name drop at will you almost think its a social disease. They’ll tell anyone who cares to listen how they were consulted before the owner of the club found a site and a name for the club, and how he has dinner with him on Tuesday but he’ll probably sly him anyway, because his other guy is coming from the UK and this one is his sure guy and he had sent him money to get things for him when he was getting back. I don’t have to tell you most of these sort of guys are liars right?

The Couples
If you are single and you see Couples in the club you will question your entire existence. You’ll see them dancing together with the girl giving the guy amazingly erotic whines, and when her feet hurts she asks him to sit for a lap dance all the while shoving her boobies in his face and he is grabbing her butt and giving you a look like, yea this is all mine, meanwhile you are still trying to hustle random girls in the club. Two hours later they are both tired from dancing and she now has her legs across his lap while he gives her foot rubs and fed her seedless grapes.

The Club Hoppers
They come in, survey the place, spend 15 minutes, don’t see their ex girlfriend and her crew, or their guys and their guys guys and so they leave and hit the next club, all the while drinking the bottle water they bought in traffic. They are usually lodged in a hotel in a central place, like a hotel on Victoria Island for instance from where they begin their club hopping adventures all over the island.

OBO’s
You know those pictures you see on Twitter of peoples bills in the club running into millions, yes, those are the Omo Baba Olowo’s. Daddy’s Money? Sugar Daddies Money? Yahoo Money? Hustle Money? Bet9ja Money, all rolled into one. The OBO’s are usually a bunch of show offs trying to live fast and die hard, spending peoples pension and gratuity one night in the club and then their friends don’t see them again till they’ve made another hammer, and it is the entire process of burning through cash again until the next episode.

The Perverts
We really need to talk about these set of clubbers. They are nasty and if you are one, stop it, don’t do it. Don’t be that guy. Their traits include forcing a grind with a girl dancing on her own or with her friends, please understand the concept of personal space and stop thrusting your groins at peoples hips and bum in the club. They also like to operate by plying a girl with alcohol with the hopes of having their way with her. This group is possibly the worst group to have in the club, nobody likes them, and they aren’t fun to be around.

Again! Muslim Group Seeks Withdrawal of N100 Notes Printed Under GEJ Because It Has No Arabic Inscriptions

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has asked the FG to withdraw from circulation, the N100 notes printed during the administration of former Pres. Jonathan. In a statement by Ishaq Akintola, its director, the group alleged that the N100 notes of Jonathan government were inferior and had no Arabic Ajami inscriptions.

Akintola claimed that the removal of the inscription was a form of "ethnic cleansing" aimed at discouraging the learning and use of Arabic language in Nigeria. Ajami refers to Arabic alphabets used for writing African languages, especially those of Hausa and Swahili. It is considered an Arabic-derived African writing system. Since African languages involve phonetic sounds and systems different from the Arabic language, there have often been adaptations of the Arabic script to transcribe them.

MURIC wondered why Ajami was removed from some notes with the assumption of office by a Christian president. "It was not the first time this would happen. Arabic inscriptions which have always been on Nigerian currency since independence were unceremoniously removed in 2005 from N5, N10, N20 and N50 denominations during the reign of Olusegun Obasanjo," the statement read.

"But Nigerians need to know that this move was calculated to hurt the Muslim population and may end up as a disservice to the nation.

The average northerner cannot read any other script except in Arabic Ajami and anyone who wants to communicate with him effectively must use the Ajami, not even writings in Hausa language can help in this matter.

Millions of northerners have therefore been marginalised by removing the Arabic Ajami. Currencies worldwide are designed to suit each nation's culture and history. Incidentally, Nigeria is a multireligious entity.

In this case, therefore, our cultural and religious homogeneity should be the criteria, particularly when designing our banknotes, our stamps, etc. We are all taxpayers and to that extent we all deserve representation."

Zimbabwean celebrity, Boity reportedly disgraces Davido for demanding sex from her

According to reports from Dailytrust.ng, a Nigerian music star, Davido has been accused of fighting a popular South African presenter, Boity after his concert in Zimbabwe last Saturday. Zimbabwe newspaper, H-Metro, reports that Davido and Boity had a nasty confrontation at a local hotel after Davidio's 30 Billion Concert held at the Harare International Conference Centre, HICC.

The reported Davido's fight with the celebrity happened in the early hours of Sunday morning and eyewitnesses told the newspaper that it was such a bad clash that left some of the Meikles hotel furniture destroyed. Police had to be called in to calm the situation down.
