Jeez, I can’t believe it’s been a year since I released my last remake. Sorry to keep you waiting (just in case you’re waiting).

I’ve actually been working on a handful of remakes but all of them are put on hold due to my schedule or some technical constraints. However, since I found some time lately to again express my creative side, I seized the chance and recorded a remake. I chose Rihanna’s #1 hit “Diamonds”.

Prior to recording, the translation of the song went very smoothly; thanks to my colleague Marga (aka Akemi Nishikido). Basically, it’s a masterpiece conceived out of boredom at work, as we did it at the time when there’s no workload coming in at our job, and we’re seeking ways to kill time. Believe me, it’s something we didn’t want to do…ever.

This is how it looks like at daytime!

Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino, (as for me) is one of the two notable hotels located in the Queen City of the South. The other one is Crown Regency Hotel & Towers.

Apart from providing classy accommodations for tourists, Waterfront Lahug, as called by many Cebuanos, is also known as Cebu’s chief host of several big concerts—both local and international.

At night, the hotel is lit up with orange lights, adding a scenic beauty to the city.

FYI: The day I took this was when I was riding in a van, and the driver decided to stop over at the hotel to defecate. He asserted that Waterfront’s restrooms are cool. I guess I have to agree. LOL!

Cebu Taoist Temple and Its Dragons

Sitting on top of the Beverly Hills Subdivision in Cebu City is Cebu Taoist Temple, a well-known tourist stop-off and religious spot among worshippers of Taoism.

During my most recent excursion, I was able to go back there and take cool pictures. Though I’ve visited the place five times, I still couldn’t help myself but be attracted with its beauty and grandeur. I also got fascinated with the many dragon statues placed in various portions of the temple.

A Taoist Structure

This is one of the noticeable structures inside the temple. Here you can throw a coin and make a wish. I can’t personally consider it as a wishing well as it doesn’t look like one…Kinda like a wishing pond. But never mind ‘cause it’s beautiful in its way. Now can you read the Chinese characters on the pillar?

From one of the balconies of the temple, you can enjoy seeing the panorama of Cebu City, its neighboring towns and Mactan Island.

Dragons’ Roof

If your house was guarded by four dragons sitting on top of the roof, you’re definitely be safe from any harm. But it’s a different thing when it comes to dragon statues… Cool sight!

As Dragons Watch, Fire Breaks Out

The day I took this was actually the time when firefighters were still busy extinguishing a big fire that burned a famous mall here in Cebu City. But the smoke you’re seeing in the pic ISN’T the fire I’m talking about. It’s probably a new one…or just a simple burning of some combustible stuff. But either way, the dragons are not to blame. They’re harmless, LOL.

Now these are two cute little dragons! I’m just not sure if they are friends or lovers. I don’t even have any idea about their gender. :)

BTW, I forgot to take a pic of the temple’s biggest dragon statue. Such a shame… Next time then!

Stations of the Cross at Celestial Gardens, Cebu City

This year, I am proud to say I justifiably observed Good Friday as I managed to participate in the “Stations of the Cross” (also known as “Via Crucis” or “Way of the Cross”), a Catholic practice remembering the Passion of Jesus Christ.

My legs (plus my faith) really did their best as I walked, together with my friends, from the first up to the last fourteenth station. The trek was not that easy because aside from the scorching weather, the place, which is officially called Celestial Gardens, was situated on some limestone hills in uptown Cebu City. Most locals though are familiar of it with the name “Good Shepherd” (originated from the religious congregation “Good Shepherd Sisters” which is based in the said area as well).

The Gateway to Celestial Gardens

This is where we began our journey…Well, not really because we walked a kilometer or two prior to reaching this landmark (LOL). Celestial Gardens actually serves as a memorial park; or without the euphemism, a cemetery…a beautiful one. As engraved on the top portion of the gateway, the place is owned and managed by Tanchan Foundation, Inc.

Images Depicting the Sorrowful Mysteries

Few steps from the gateway, you’ll be seeing these collection of statues portraying the Sorrowful Mysteries. That includes the Agony in the Garden, Scourging at the Pillar and Crowning with Thorns.

Station #1: Jesus Is Condemned to Death

Some devotees offer flowers to the statues as they do the Via Crucis. And don’t ever think it’s a form of idolatry. We Catholics only treat these images as representations of who we truly worship (that’s God and other religious entities). Hence, we don’t really worship the images themselves.

Station #2: Jesus Accepts the Cross

Now let me digress for a while. See those blue tarpaulins beside the statues? Those are the temporary shelters of vendors purveying goods like bottled water, snacks, candles; even rosaries and rosary guides. I wonder where will they be in regular days… Life’s tough. :(

Station #3: Jesus Falls the First Time

Seeing images like this really makes me feel how bad Jesus Christ underwent in the hands of His persecutors…

Station #4: Jesus Meets His Mother

This scene would have been great if that green plastic bottle wasn’t present. Some visitors, unfortunately, don’t know how to practice simple acts like throwing garbage in the right place. :(

Station #5: Simon of Cyrene Carries the Cross

Ooops…another bottle. This time it’s red. Perhaps I should consider it as a candleholder. <Cleanliness is next to godliness.>

Station #6: Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus

And if I may add, the place is actually fairly vegetated, with various types of plants visible as you go along the way. The most common of them is the Plumeria (well-known as calachuchi), a shrub bearing yellowish, white or pinkish flowers.

Station #7: Jesus Falls the Second Time

Some stations have empty or water-filled tin containers (seen at the bottom-left portion of the picture) that serve as spots for lighting candles. Such containers have metallic mesh on top of them which holds the candles. The act of kindling candles is locally known as dagkot.

Station #8: Jesus Meets the Women of Jerusalem

I wonder why this station is fenced and the others are not… It’s probably special…

Station #9: Jesus Falls the Third Time

Observe this photo and you’ll know how it feels like doing the Way of the Cross in Celestial Gardens. You better be challenged. :)

This would have been really cool had it been that the horse had its tail and vandalism wasn’t committed. Maintenance please…

Station #10: Jesus Is Stripped Off His Garments

You may get to see kids playing the statues. Just don’t’ bother them. After all, they’re kids. Some of them actually don’t play but sell goods for a living. Try buying on them.

Station #11: Jesus Is Nailed to the Cross

By seeing the background, you might assume the place is surrounded by residential lots. Guess what…you’re right!

Station #12: Jesus Dies on the Cross

Some households treat the Lent as an opportunity of making business by selling goods. Some does the large-scale—I’m talking about putting up an eatery (as what you see at the upper right part of the pic). BTW, this station is one of my faves. A masterpiece, I must say.

Station #13: Jesus’ Body Is Removed from the Cross

Probably the most moving of all stations. I mean, look at the view…

Devotees at the End of Via Crucis

And we’re about to reach the last station! This time, a surge of people could be witnessed. This is due to the fact that most of them leave a little longer to pray or to offer, or even to touch the images at the 14th station. I guess all we had to do is wait…

Station #14: Jesus Is Laid in the Tomb and Covered in Incense

The last and most crowded of all 14 stations. Here, devotees may offer something (usually money) upon the completion of the Via Crucis. Personally, reaching this spot is quite fulfilling as it proves how strong your faith is, and how willing you are to struggle for God and whatever you believe in.

And here’s another remake y’all!

But first and foremost, allow me to express my thanks to all who lent their ears and listened to my previous work “Lanog-Lanog (Super Bass Bisaya)”. I was really thrilled to see the number of views rise so fast just days after I released it. You gotta know it means a lot to me. Woot!

Now, back to the main game…

You see, for around 5 years now, I’ve been remaking songs by translating them from English to Cebuano (or Bisaya—my mother tongue). But the one that I’ll be presenting to you now is a bit different ‘cause I did the other way: that is lyrical translation from a local language to English. It’s not a Cebuano song though but Tagalog. The song, by the way, is called “Hindi Na Bale”, which was first popularized by Jessa Zaragoza, then lately by Bugoy Drilon.

I decided to use the latter’s version as its pitch is attainable, plus it showcases cool melisma (which I def like!).

That’s all!

Lanog-Lanog (Super Bass Bisaya)

I admit it took a while for me to finish this one but finally it’s done and out!

This time, I took a break at remaking pop divas’ hits and instead, explored a more challenging and fast-paced tune by the Trinidadian-born American rapper Nicki Minaj.

“Super Bass” is undoubtedly Minaj’s most successful single worldwide including the Philippines, wherein at one point, it was heavily played on the radio, clubs, TV shows and local dance competitions. Well, with its captivating musical and lyrical arrangements, I must say it does deserve the fame it has achieved thus far…just as deserving to have its own Cebuano remake (with all humility. LOL!) from me. It was quite a challenge though but I made it.

The remake’s original vocals was actually completed as early as December last year but the additional vocals and editing took a couple of months to give way for my previous remake “Natawo’ng Ing-ani (Born This Way Bisaya)” + my work.

LOL! I’ve just learned that the manufacturer of Red Horse Beer (Extra Strong) is San Miguel Brewery, Inc., who happens to be the manufacturer as well of San Miguel Beer (Pale Pilsen). I often hear people putting these two brands under comparison when in fact they don’t have to.

Anyway, both beers are great. Cheers to that!

I find this one cool!

One store along Naga’s seawall seems not using plates or bowls anymore when they serve junk foods (such as Piattos potato chips). They instead utilize the packing; slightly modifying it to make it look like a presentable food container.

An effective way to save dishwashing liquid and time! :P

All About Goat Raising

Aside from swine, poultry and cattle, goats are also considered a chief livestock in the agriculturally dependent nation of the Philippines. Goats are raised mainly for their meat and milk. Filipino dishes such as kaldereta and kare-kare employ goat’s meat as a main ingredient.

Lately, I got to observe a goat pen owned by a certain Cebuano family man. He’s not really a farmer by profession but does raise some goats as sideline business. This is how it looks like.

Goat Pen

His goat pen is basically made of indigenous and recyclable materials like bamboo, coconut wood and used tin roofing. Albeit being simple and small, it in fact serves its purpose (big time) as it houses around 10 goats of various sizes. The pen is guarded 24/7 by a dog.

I guess this is the biggest goat in the enclosure. Its size is comparable to that of a small pony. Amazed? :)

Theotokos Diocesan Shrine

Located on top of a sanctified hill in Barangay Perrelos, Carcar City, Theotokos Diocesan Shrine is one of the many religious Roman Catholic sites in Cebu province. Just like its more famous counterpart, the Monastery of the Holy Eucharist in Simala, Sibonga, the shrine is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and serves as a Marian pilgrim site.

The Towering Sign

Once you manage to climb up the hill and reach the main gate, you will be seeing this pillar-like structure bearing the shrine’s name and logo. Now, try to look at it without raising your head up. :)

Archangel’s Image

There are actually lots of statues inside the shrine, and one of them is this statue of an archangel (which I presume as that of St. Michael Archangel). With the Traveller’s Palm at its background, this life-size image is a magnum opus.

St. Gabriel Archangel

And this is the image of St. Gabriel Archangel! St. Gabriel is known in Catholicism as the messenger of God to the humans.

St. Rafael Archangel

Completing the archangels’ statues is that of St. Rafael Archangel. Did you know that St. Rafael (or Raphael), alongside the other two archangels, is not only highly regarded in Catholicism but also in Islam and Judaism as well?

The Holy Family

Found inside the shrine’s chapel, this cleverly made figure of the Holy Family is nothing but a religious masterpiece. And Baby Jesus is so cute. :)

Religious Face to Face

The first time I saw this, I didn’t immediately recognize that it’s actually Mama Mary and Jesus Christ. Fronting the chapel’s interior, this image is partly enclosed by a glass wall and serves as a praying spot. Beneath it is a sign that says “Do not touch her. She will touch you”. And based on the pic, you can clearly say that I adhered to it. :P

Inside the Adoration Chapel

The adoration chapel in Theotokos is so hallowed and quiet that it allows you to fully meditate and reach out to God at your utmost focus and emotion.

The Act of Praying

Aside from the chapel, the shrine also contains a spot where you can light a candle and pray. This act is known as “dagkot” in Cebuano.

This huge image of Virgin Mary is the chief landmark and focal point of Theotokos Diocesan Shrine.

Holy Water Valves

Surrounding the base portion of Virgin Mary’s image are valves, which if turned on, would discharge water that is believed to cleanse one’s soul free from the Seven Deadly Sins. There are seven valves; each of them is a source of holy water intended for a particular deadly sin. Interesting!

Staring at Mama Mary’s immense figure on a fair day feels so dramatic. God is great, really. And living is cool.

The shrine also offers a scenic view of the coastline of Carcar City and its neighboring municipalities. Cebu Strait is also visible, not to mention the island of Bohol and…the sky. Haha.

Dark Red Bougainvillea

The bougainvillea is considered one of the most familiar ornamental plants in the Philippines. When I was young, I could get to see this plant almost everywhere…from our garden, to our neighbor’s front yard, then to our school’s porch. It seemed at one point, this easy-to-propagate shrub had been a gardener’s favorite.

Bougainvilleas come in many colors, with dark red ones being the most common (I think). As I was paying a visit at a shrine last October, I was able to observe some of them and take pictures at close range.

Dark Red Bougainvillea

Here’s a close-up pic of a dark red bougainvillea. Just in case you don’t know, the dark red parts are botanically not classified as flowers but bracts. Bracts are modified leaves that surround the plant’s real flower. In the case of bougainvilleas, the real flower is situated in the middle of the bracts and is tiny and yellow.
