Tiger & Woods (Live)

Shrouded in mystery! No one knows where it’s coming from, no one knows where it’s going. Well, that’s all about to change. Those special extended disco versions that have been carefully tuned, remixed, over-dubbed, sliced and diced by Larry Tiger and David Woods have caused quite a stir. In a heavy and endless rain of edits, they are a cut above the rest. Looking to the future, while digging in the past, Tiger & Woods use both recognizable and exotic sources supplemented with original production to take you to undiscovered terrains that somehow feel like home.

Here’s how they met: One day in a fairly dusty basement (digging for records of course), these two fine gentlemen nearly got into a fight over a nameless boogie record which is so rare (super rare!) that even the usual disco detectives hadn’t discovered it yet. Actually, they still haven’t. Without a name – and only identified by a test pressing sticker dedicated to the NYC-disco-DJ-legend Walter “Hot Trix” Scott – the 72-year old owner of the record store/basement accidently placed the record on his belt-driven turntable. Turning their heads and smacking their lips, both were so full of lust to get their hands on this precious relic that they both rushed to the booth, waving their hard-earned cash.

Some Italian profanities and chest-beating later, Larry and David decided to buy the thing together (the old dude had raised the price sky-high by this point) and take it to Tiger’s studio. Unfortunately, the fruit of their teamwork never saw the light of day due to a hard drive crash…and you know what they say…you can’t recreate the magic of the moment. But the guys kept on working, and as they timidly presented their early works to a mutual friend (an avid record collector) he gasped: “This is what DJ Sneak should sound like today!”

Natural Magic (DJ)

From the depths of a murky, bubbling hot spring located in a land of sour cherry waterfalls and spaced-out giggling gnomes was birthed a life force so great the mere mention of its name can make the boldest elders of the land cower in fear and even the most unabashed fairy beauties giggle in school girl delight. Natural Magic is the pseudo-human personification of this ancient force and the union of two souls so destined for musical communion not even the wink of the fairest of woodland maidens could make them waver in their commitment to the dance. The dusty old record collection enshrined to them by the elfin council of party times is now split between San Francisco and Portland, OR and is reassembled in its entirety but once a year in the clouds atop Mt. Shasta for a 48 hour party of old record pool disco 12 inches, questionable 90s radio hits and timeless synthy techno records (although if you ask them, they just play “trance”).
ABOUT JAMES BLAKE:

It is not the first time a DJ has saved someone’s life, and it won’t be the last, but when a teenage James Blake first visited the London club night FWD>> (pronounced “forward”) in 2007, his mind was well and truly knocked for six.

Down in the pitch-black basement of Plastic People the DJs played grime and garage, and James liked it. Loved it, in fact. He’d never heard anything like it before. He’d been to drum ’n’ bass nights with school friends, but the music here was different, the atmosphere unlike anything he’d experienced. This was what James had been waiting for – he just hadn’t realized. “I thought, this drives me so far into my own head, much more than anything has ever done,” he says, “and it was so loud and dark in there.”

This midnight epiphany in a Shoreditch cellar led, in a few short years, to the James Blake of 2010, a surefooted 22-year-old composer whose extraordinary tracks are not so much breaking down existing musical barriers as leaping over them and creating an entirely new kind of pop that belies its author’s tender age. Loosely tethered to dubstep, but displaying an astonishing grasp of songwriting and electronic production, James’s songs possess uncommon grace and soulfulness. Whether intended for the FWD>> dancefloor or, like new single ‘Limit to Your Love’, destined to melt hearts and prick ears, his music is characterised by a playful and arresting honesty, a human touch that naturally aligns him with contemporary artists such as Bon Iver or Laura Marling or the xx.

Yet more than this, it is the shock of the new in James’s music that’s causing real commotion: the sounds, that voice, the silence, the rhythm (or lack of it), the waiting, the tension… You have to know the rules in order to break them with such conviction, and by daring to be different, James stands head and shoulders above his peers. No doubt, you’ll remember where you were when you heard “Limit to Your Love’ or ‘I Never Learnt to Share’ for the first time. His debut album, released early next year, promises to change the game.

So who is this wunderkind? James Blake was born in 1988 and raised in leafy Enfield, north London, the only child of a musician father and a graphic designer mother. Both self-employed and successful in their respective fields, they instilled in their son a determination to do things his own way and to never work for anyone but himself. At six, James began to learn the piano and was later taught classically, completing the grades, which he didn’t enjoy but saw the importance of it. “I had a sense at an early age that if I was improving then it must be a good thing,” he says. “So I stuck with it. I could see I was getting better at the piano.”

In his teens, James would improvise and practise singing, and liked to play along to old Motown and soul records, Otis Redding and so on. By doing this, he learned about harmony. “I’d be learning classical harmony and also how to play gospel organ — I was really into gospel quite early on, like real gospel, the Reverend James Cleveland and amazing stuff that was interesting to me pianistically. Then I got into [jazz pianists] Art Tatum and Erroll Garner, though I was never into jazz. I always felt that jazz had had its day and I was looking for something else, something new.”

Although his father had plenty of recording gear and instruments in his studio, James only became interested in this side of things after that trip to FWD>>, when he realised the only way to make new sounds would be to get a copy of music-making program Logic and to start to copy the “pure, original dubstep” he adored by the likes of Mala and Coki, the Digital Mystikz. Slowly, he trickled his own musical ideas into these tracks.

FWD>> not only spurred James into producing, it also provided him with a new social scene, something he’d longed for, having tired of the same old faces at sixth form and not quite adjusted to university life at Goldsmiths in south London, where he was studying popular music. “There was a world of people my age making music that I found really exciting going on – I wanted to get in on that. And I saw the DJ and I thought, I want to be there, I want to be behind those decks. At the time I didn’t see any musical merit in DJing. It didn’t occur to me that it can be really rewarding musically, as well as being a good opportunity to meet loads of nice people.”

Uni offered James ample time to write music on his laptop and attend dubstep nights in Brixton (DMZ) and Shoreditch (FWD>>). His first single, ‘Air and Lack Thereof’, came out in 2009 on the Hemlock label, run by Jack Dunning, aka the producer Untold and now a good friend of James. This came about when Jack heard a track by James played by the DJ, Distance, on a Rinse FM radio show. He thought it sounded fresh and asked to sign it. Certainly, James’s tracks sounded markedly different to almost every other dubstep or post-dubstep record being played. For a start, they had chords. “Nothing else had chords at the time,” he says. “And it wasn’t just chords either, it was gospel chords, organ chords.”

The title ‘Air and Lack Thereof’ relates to one of James’s signature sounds, white noise. “There’s a lot of horrible noise going on in the track, but it actually sounds really pleasant. I’ve always been into layering noise with things because it puts them on their own pillow, their own cloud. I like things to have their own bed of noise to sit on.” And when James DJs, he’s quite happy to slip some silence into his sets. It’s not pretentious, he says, he just wants to break it up a bit. “You don’t really appreciate some sounds until you’re not hearing them.” James has released five singles this year, to considerable acclaim; for some reason, bloggers tend to pick up on the sense of isolation in his work and love to ruminate over his intricate beats. A few of his key tracks feature heavily edited, cut-up vocal samples from R&B records, but on his radical reading of Feist’s ‘Limit to Your Love’ he sings the song himself, layering his voice. It’s a powerful number. “‘Limit to Your Love’ was the first time I ever used my voice and I gave special attention to it,” he says. “I thought, well, I’m using my voice here so I’ll do something extra innovative.”

Some may be interested to know that he recorded that song 18 months ago and wasn’t even sure if he’d release it. Most of the album was written in his digs in New Cross and Deptford, though he’d often return to Enfield to clear his head and compose. No distractions there, no friends popping round, and if he looks out of his window it’s green and silent. What’s revealing is that he wrote the songs for his album at the same time as he was putting out the more experimental 12-inches. “I went through a lot of sounds. And the weird thing is, those songs don’t sound like anything on those 12-inches — they sound completely different.”

What is consistent, though, is the intoxicating effect his music is having as more and more people fall under its spell. Twelve months ago he was virtually unknown. Now James is the darling of the cutting edge, about to hit the mainstream, and there’s no question that he knows what he’s doing. “I have an obsession with emotion,” he says. “I want to make dance music that actually connects with people in the way that a soul record does. I want my music to speak to you like a folk record does, in an organic, human way. It’s the human touch that I want.”

Producer Dave Huismans is 2562, pioneering in the way that he has merged dubstep and techno. The result is a full yet lean, fluid hybrid that has found an audience not only among fans of dubstep, but anyone drawn to fresh and innovative club music. His 2562 album “Aerial” was released in 2008 by Pinch’s Tectonic Label, and regarded by many critics as one of the albums of the year. As Boomkat wrote: “This album follows in the massively revered tradition of dub experimentation and rhythm science laid down in the lineage stretching from Lee Perry through King Tubby, Scientist, Steve Gurley, Dillinja, Photek, Rhythm & Sound, Kode 9 and Burial.” In 2009 Dave follow up “Aerial” with the equally acclaimed “Unbalance” full-length. As Resident Advisor wrote: “With his debut album under the 2562 moniker, Dave Huismans produced one of the most stylistically perfect dubstep full-lengths to date. Fusing his unique sense of swung dance floor rhythms with the stark stabs of synthesizer that techno pioneers Basic Channel made prudent, Aerial was—as the bleak artwork reinforced—an impeccable exploration of the shadows of greyscale. The follow-up, Unbalance, is even better, seeing him discovering colour, embracing the lighter scales and sometimes even twinkling with melody.” Huismans also releases deep house and techno influences tracks under the alias A Made Up Sound and runs the label When In Doubt.

Tempa / Swamp 81 – Bristol, UK

Headhunter is a dubstep producer / DJ from Bristol, England, currently signed to Tempa. Starting off with twitchy minimal half-step rhythms on the label Ascension he set up with flat-mate Tech Itch (aka Technical Itch), his sound now occupies a niche section of the dubstep scene , sitting comfortably between the ultra-heavy bass styles of Skream, Benga and his Tempa stablemates, and the deeper Berlin influenced techno side of the dubstep coin, favoured by the likes of Scuba, 2562 & Martyn. His debut album ‘Nomad’ was released in September 2008 on Tempa.

To sit at a table set with the sounds of TwoFourteen is to be served Hungry-man portions of honey-buttered electro beats, side dishes of synth-line treats, and dollops of IDM-get-down.Like most musicians, Chris Roman’s path is rooted in a veritable melting pot of sounds. Some of the influences are obvious. Others not so much so.

His Puerto Rican birthright and Miami upbringing ring apparent when he’s pumping out sci-fi roller disco sounds, but when his vibe turns to the cold dark comfort of Detroit-esque minimal mind funk, it would seem this man forgets from whence he came. It’s a memory lapse that sounds like a lapdance in the side room of a space ship. More importantly, it’s a memory lapse that works. It’s not so much a lapse then as a love of diversity, a creative finesse with a variety of good tastes.

TwoFourteen effortlessly blends lush Latin roots with robo-transformer trips, always maintaining a skillful balance between the nasty, the not-right, the cold, hard, and just-right — all at the same time. He’s got plenty of tricks up his proverbial record sleeve. And he’s been pulling them out for years now.

Wherever you can find it, count on TwoFourteen for premium blend electro and assorted savory flavors from the future.

214 just released his second album on Andrea Parker’s Touchin’ Bass label.
Ill Cosby is the Seattle based DJ/producer who operates the bass music label Car Crash Set. Following a decade of widely varied production work for a handful of labels, Cosby started Car Crash Set in 2008 and has since released over 20 releases that focus on the cutting edge bass sounds emerging around the world. With a weekly show on glitch.fm, Cosby’s DJ sets range from dubstep to UK funky, future garage to L.A. beats, and all points in between.

She quickly ran away to London with a hard rock band and lived on a bus with them in a car park in Hayes, Middlesex for 12 months, working as their lighting engineer, record sleeve artist, wardrobe designer. and mechanic.

Her great ambition was to become a music journalist. She figured the next logical step would be to produce her own fanzine Krush.

She sent a couple of issues along with a demented CV detailing her adventures to the Editor of Sounds music paper and landed a job with them at the age of 19.

At 21, having been profoundly influenced by snapshots of Metallica & Motley Crue, Mary Anne sold all her worldly goods and bought a one-way ticket to Hollywood, where she lived in a garden shed.

She spent a year as Sounds US correspondent in the dark underbelly of LA writing about the fledgling thrash metal scene.. Jane’s Addiction.. Guns N’ Roses et al

At Sounds Mary Anne met fellow teenager James Brown (legendary writer and publisher, not the Godfather of soul) who became a lifelong friend.

James moved to NME as Features Editor and when Mary Anne returned to London from LA, he promptly poached her to work with him at NME. Mary Anne spent three years on the newsdesk and also worked as a major feature writer there, writing cover stories on everything from Nirvana to Lollapalooza.

She went on with James Brown to form part of the original team he put together to launch Loaded magazine. She worked there as Music Editor, and also writing major undercover stories about private detectives, cocaine dealers to the stars and most notoriously a Soho sex club.

Mary Anne got her break in radio at BBC GLR on Sunday mornings alongside Mark Lamarr.

She presented groundbreaking shows on XFM for 5 years during their trail broadcasts, which helped to win their licence.

She was poached by Radio 1 in 1997 after a particularly confrontational interview with Radio 1s then Head Of Production (Trevor Dann) was bootlegged around the BBC and found the desk of the Controller of the day, Matthew Bannister.

Mary Anne’s time at Radio 1 has been hectic she has hosted shows from all the major award ceremonies: Brits, Q, NME, Kerrang, Mercury Music Prize and made documentaries about artists as diverse as David Bowie, Slipknot and The Sex Pistols.

She championed comedy god Ricky Gervais in his pre-Office days hosted a movie review show with Mark Kermode called Cling Film founded and fronted the award-winning Radio 1 Rock Show for five years from 1999-2005.

TV there’s quite a lot, M.A. hosted a season of live coverage of the World Superbike Championship for British Eurosport.. she made a series about global biker culture in India, Russia, Japan, the US and Europe for BBC Choice called Mary Anne’s Bikes fronted 27 hours of live coverage at Glastonbury Festival for the BBC and has guested on everything from BBC2′s Never Mind The Buzzcocks to John Peel’s Record Box for Channel4.

Mary Anne can ride any motorcycle you care to park in front of her.

::: GONJASUFI BIO ::::
Gonjasufi (born Sumach Ecks, aka Sumach Valentine, ca. 1978) is a rapper, singer, disc jockey and yoga teacher from San Diego, California and currently living in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ecks was born to a Mexican mother and an American-Ethiopian father. He has been releasing music since the early 1990s among the San Diego Hip Hop scene, notably with the Masters of the Universe crew. Ecks gained notice from Warp Records in 2008 after an appearance on Californian musician Flying Lotus’ album Los Angeles, where he sings on the track “Testament”. His Warp debut album, A Sufi and a Killer was released on March 8, 2010. Ecks’ voice was described by Pitchfork Media as “a scraggly, scary, smoked-out croak that creeps like the spiritual offspring of George Clinton and Leadbelly”. He attributes his singing voice to his day job teaching yoga, where he must “project from [his] stomach more”.

:::: LORN BIO ::::
Unafraid and unhinged, Lorn’s music is exquisitely dark and ominous, simmering with anger that churns forcefully against a furtive longing. Yet Lorn passes far beyond this evocative brutality and plunges head first into the absurd; he draws not only a portrait of shadowy struggle but also arouses a dynamic universe of sentiments using deconstructed sounds and skills built from the ground up.

Lorn’s debut full-length album Nothing Else, released on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label, has stirred the minds of listeners and rattled the keyboards of critics around the world, accumulating praise from musical authorities such as Pitchfork and the BBC, as well as bloggers and the online underground alike.

The Milwaukee-based producer hails from the future of music as do his Brainfeeder contemporaries, however this young artist also forges a connection between the current exploding beat scene and its roots in the experimental scratch community born many years ago. Sharing his music online with other explorers of new software technology, Lorn cultivated a global following with his original scratch beats and traveled to play in the UK, Europe and Canada before ever releasing an album.

At age 23, this art school dropout has already been making beats for almost a decade, and with the release of Nothing Else has moved his mastery of emotion to a new level. Influenced by the sounds of metal, drum and bass, ambient, classical, early hip hop, funk and the inherent pain of human existence, the music that pushes itself out of Lorn’s head is uncompromising to the point of defiance, sharply reflecting his commitment to his craft that has inspired so many others.

Lorn, left behind no more, is an impassioned performer who commands the crowd, with a stage presence that parallels the extreme emotional output of his music. Expect no less than greatness from this artist; certitude and concern is a potent combination for the creation of beauty, and from the unconquerable will of one shall no doubt emerge profound musical experiences for many.

:::: TAKE BIO ::::
As the electronic music world lifts an interested eyebrow towards the West Coast’s burgeoning “Beat Scene,” Take aka Sweatson Klank has risen to the top as one of the new generation’s finest producers. In a musical landscape that is quickly becoming overcrowded, Take fuses his own brand of future-flung electronics with elements of avant-garde jazz, subharmonic melodies and a mean hip hop bounce.

A multi-instrumentalist and frequency fanatic with ten years of releases and live performance experience, Take’s formula is ever-evolving and his productions clearly sprinkled with his unique sonic vocabulary. Constantly growing, Take uses engaging melodies, non-linear development and a multi-strata slump to communicate a fresh feeling of movement in every track. Embracing his geographic legacy in the thriving LA experimental beat community but still very much his own player, Take makes music that charts its own course through a gurgling fuzz of rich layers and textures. His sound has always been about pushing forward, breaking ground and laying a new path for producers to walk.

Take’s musical catalog includes releases for labels like All City, Eat Concrete, Circulations, Buttermilk, Poobah, Inner Current, Swedish Brandy and Astro Lab, as well as remixes and compilation tracks for the likes of Warp, Plug Research, Power Shovel Audio, Dublab, Circulations, and many others.

Take has been championed on various influential radio programs by the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs, Benji B, Giles Peterson, Carlos Nino, and Garth Trinidad. He has performed at the some of the most highly regarded club nights and festivals around the world such as Low End Theory, Sonar Music Festival and The Loud Minority amongst others. Take has also shared the stage with the likes of Flying Lotus, Ras G, Glitch Mob, SamIYam, Nosaj Thing, Kode 9, Busdriver, Mos Def, Prefuse 73, Mike Slott, Hudson Mohawke and more.

2010 sees the highly anticipated release of Take’s full-length album, Only Mountain, on the highly acclaimed label Alpha Pup Records on April 20. High in psychedelic pulp and littered with gritty layers of electronic emotion, the new endeavor has been described as “a roiling pot of old school IDM, ’90s R&B percussive elements, dubstep bass-derived doom, and ethereal melodies” by Chris Martins of the LA Weekly. In addition, Take will drop a 10″ EP on All City Records, an EP for Japanese label Circulations and another record for Netherlands-based label Eat Concrete during 2010 — quite the busy year indeed.

Describing his music as “rooted in hip hop but on a spaceship headed for a new and better placeÉsomewhere out there,” Take may not know exactly where his beats will end up- but he is taking us along for the ride.

::: ROBERT HENKE BIO :::
Robert Henke a.k.a. Monolake, born 1969, is a composer, sound designer, software developer, installation artist and performer. His music has roots in academic sound research as well as in club culture, and the result is a body of work that is sophisticated yet accessible. Henke’s musical and performative work is about space and its exploration in different time scales, it is about the impact of massive gestures and precisely shaped details in the background. Many of his works can be perceived as potentially endless sonic states inviting the audience to immerse themselves completely for a freely defined amount of time.

Robert Henke releases music under his own name and as Monolake; his performances and interactive installations have been shown at places like the Tate Modern in London, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, MUDAM in Luxembourg, and the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney. In 2007 his work Layering Buddha received an honorary mention at the Prix Ars Electronica. Robert Henke is one of the authors of the Ableton Live music software, and teaches as professor for sound design at the University of Arts in Berlin.

www.kevinsaunderson.com

Kevin Saunderson “The Elevator” (born in Brooklyn, New York on September 5, 1964) is an American electronic music producer. At the age of nine he moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he attended Belleville High School and befriended two students, Derrick May and Juan Atkins. Saunderson, with Atkins and May, (often called the “Belleville Three”), is considered to be one of the originators of techno, specifically Detroit techno.

Although frequently associated with Detroit, Kevin Saunderson spent the early years of his life in Brooklyn, New York, before moving to Belleville, Michigan, a rural town some 30 miles from Detroit. As teenagers attending Belleville High School, Atkins, May, and Saunderson were fans of DJ Charles “The Electrifying Mojo” Johnson and the pop, disco, and funk music he played. Atkins and May soon became serious about mixing others’ music and creating their own, but Saunderson pursued other goals first, studying telecommunications and playing American football at Eastern Michigan University. Atkins had begun recording with Cybotron in 1981, but it was not until 1985 that May followed suit and made a record. Initially concentrating on becoming a DJ, Saunderson watched the six-month-long process as May completed “Let’s Go” he was inspired to create his own music.

http://ghostly.com/artists/gadi-mizrahi

Gadi Mizrahi has been a staple of the Brooklyn’s dance-music scene for nearly a decade, DJing as half of the Wolf + Lamb duo, co-founding the influential Wolf + Lamb label, and throwing legendary underground parties. But while his ear is impeccable and his taste unassailable, his own productions have been few and far between. That is, until now. Gadi has been steeped in music since his earliest days on earth, always associating himself with musical souls and visionary creative forces. His Egyptian father played traditional Arabic music; his older brother was a DJ himself. After years spent digesting his musical surroundings, Gadi discovered techno, and his passion soon led him to befriend Zev Eisenberg (the “Wolf” to Gadi’s “Lamb”) and Spectral alumni Lee Curtiss and Seth Troxler. Gadi and Zev founded Wolf + Lamb and the Marcy Hotel performance space/recording studio as a way to showcase their own music while maintaining full control over their creative vision. (“It was all out of necessity,” blushes Gadi.) Wolf + Lamb’s parties at the Marcy Hotel have grown into the hub of the Brooklyn electronic-music scene, with Gadi’s eclectic DJ sets setting the intimate, celebratory tone.

Gadi Mizrahi’s 2009 She Don’t EP, his first release for Spectral Sound, is the product of years of fierce independence and creative focus. Gadi’s own tracks, so long in the making, are the work of a lifelong aficionado at last finding his own creative voice: deep, intuitive dance cuts with a hint of madness peeking around their well-manicured edges.
