Scottish Chambers Bring Business to Tackle Youth Unemployment Challenge

Scottish Chambers of Commerce Chief Executive Liz Cameron has reacted positively to the announcements made by Youth Unemployment Minister Angela Constance in the Scottish Parliament. Liz Cameron said:

'Youth unemployment must be a priority for businesses across Scotland. Scottish Chambers of Commerce, through our network, look forward to developing effective, innovative and inspiring solutions that bring together businesses, government and young people.

'Scotland is at one in acknowledging the pressing problem of unemployment among our young people. The Scottish Chambers of Commerce are looking forward to working closely with the Scottish Government and others to ensure that its youth employment budget is directed in the best possible way to support businesses to contribute the jobs, work experience and training that are needed to address this.

'A substantial amount of the youth employment budget remains unallocated; we welcome the Scottish Government’s commitment to work with us on a series of regional youth employment events, creating a real partnership between government and the private sector to drive progress.

'In this tough economic environment, public funding is precious and we must make sure we optimise it effectiveness. Scottish Chambers of Commerce hope that the Scottish Government’s commitment to an ‘all-Government, all-Scotland’ approach to this issue will mean that employability funding across the piece is coordinated and directed to where it is most effective.'

University of Dundee Professor Appointed Scotland's Chief Scientist

Professor Andrew Morris, co-Director of the Medical Research Institute at the University of Dundee, has been appointed the new Chief Scientist for Scotland.

SCC Welcome Extension of Quantative Easing

Commenting on the decision by the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee to increase Quantitative Easing by a further £50 billion and to keep interest rates on hold at 0.5%, Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, said:

'It seems clear that inflationary pressures are receding and this has given the Bank of England the opportunity to extend its programme of Quantitative Easing further this month. That is a sensible move at a time when the previous extension of the asset purchase scheme, announced last October, is coming to an end. With continuing uncertainty facing the economy in the near term, this has to be the right decision.

'However at a more practical level for Scottish businesses, a key issue remains the easing of credit flow and the need for banks to meet their lending targets for small and medium sized businesses. We look for further progress in this regard and, if necessary, the UK Government must step in to support both banks and businesses in meeting these objectives.'
