Pranks can be great fun, but not all of them involve putting someone’s hand in warm water while he’s sleeping or similar, juvenile ideas. Some pranks have moved well beyond that, and they’re high-tech. Check out these five excellent geeky pranks.

1) Remember the “blue screen of death” that pops up when the computer crashes?

Now you can install it as a screensaver. It’s a great thing to do when your friend and coworker goes to lunch. Just slide over to his cubicle, install the BSOD screensaver, and return to your desk. Watch the hilarity when your coworker returns, nice and relaxed, from his lunch – only to see that his computer has “crashed” while he’s been away.

2) Appear to fill your coworker’s cubicle with packing peanuts.

This only works if they have a glassed-in office (at least one wall needs to be glass). You don’t have to actually fill their office with the little foam peanuts, either, because there’s a way to make it look like you did without going through all the work. You also won’t have the amazing mess of cleaning up tens of thousands of packing peanuts when your coworker finally gets brave enough to open his office door.

3) “Take over” your coworker’s computer and control it remotely.

You can use realVNC to do this, and all you’ll need is two things: a chance to install the program on the other computer, and the victim’s IP address. If you share a network, it’s easy. Just install the program while your unsuspecting coworker is at lunch or otherwise occupied, set everything up, and then have some fun from a few cubicles (or the other side of the building) away.

4) A broken LCD screen is one of the worst things that can happen…

… Especially on that brand new machine that your victim is so proud of. With the broken LCD wallpaper, you can download a great image and then hide the icons and taskbar. It’ll take a few panicked minutes before your coworker figures out his prized machine isn’t really damaged, after all.

5) Do you have an HP printer in your office?

If you do, how about changing the message on it? You can set the ‘Ready’ prompt to say ‘Insert Coin’ and watch not only the aggravation of having to pay but the confusion of looking for the coin slot. Eventually your victim will give up and go away, but it’s fun to watch the few minutes he’ll spend, coin in hand, looking for just the right place to stick it.

It’s easy to see that there’s plenty you can do with a good prank. Even if you’re a geek (or know someone who is) you don’t have to be straight-laced and professional all the time. Get out and have some fun (safely) at someone else’s expense. There are always fun things to do around the office, and a happy worker is a productive worker – so spread a little joy.

There is no city on Earth more steeped in history, both written and visible, then the fabled city of Rome in Italy. Over the last 3,000 years, Rome has played host and home to countless war-making generals, prolific politicians, religious figures and fabled warriors, many of whom have left behind wondrous, breathtaking traces of their lives and exploits, each of them waiting to be discovered in one of the most popular travel destinations in the world.

Upon arriving in Rome, you’ll undoubtedly visit the Colosseum, the Vatican and the Pantheon along with many other popular attractions, but don’t let the throngs of tourists at these locations fool you; there are many more locations around the city with the same sights of history and essence of Roman life, all alongside modern wonders that are often forgotten when visitors are exposed to the wonder of mega-structures like the Colosseum.

If you’re interested in veering just slightly off of the beaten path while visiting the city, be sure to check out a few of the most exciting hidden gems to be found in modern Rome!

1. Fontana di Trevi

Depicting the god Neptune supported by Tritons and set against the beautiful Poli Palace, the Fontana di Trevi is considered by many locals to be one of the most beautiful spots in the entire city. Designed and built for Pope Celemente XII by Nicola Salvi in the late 1700s, local lore has it that throwing a penny into the fountain over one’s left shoulder will help ensure a swift return to the city, a clear blessing for anyone who has visited Rome.

2. Castel Sant’Angelo

Originally constructed to serve as a massive mausoleum and church for Roman Emperor Hadrian in 139 CE, the Castel Sant’Angelo was rebuilt as a fortified castle nearly 1,000 years later before finally being converted into the luxurious and art-filled residence of Pope Alexander VI Borgia. Today, the castle stands as a public museum, offering visitors the opportunity to candidly explore a piece of ancient history in its open halls; be sure not to miss one of the most thorough collections of suits of armor in the world.

3. Piazza Navona

Boasting a beautiful sculpted fountain, crafted by the famed Bernini and dubbed “The Fountain of Rivers,” the Piazza Navona is set against a towering obelisk and today typically plays host to merchants selling their wares. This area is a must-see for visitors staying in Rome during the Christmas season when it plays host to hundreds of merchants selling toys, sweets and holiday decorations to throngs of jubilant customers.

4. Galleria Nazionale dell’Arte Moderna

Helping tourists to keep in mind that Rome’s history extends far past ancient times, the Galleria Nazionale dell’Arte Moderna, Rome’s national modern art gallery, showcases pieces created in the 19th and 20th centuries. With a special focus on works inspired during the days of the macchiaoli, a movement of expression that saw painters use a style based on colored dots to make features distinguishable only from particular distances, this stop on your Roman itinerary allows you to be refreshed with the new in the midst of the old.

5. Piazza di Spagna

Home of the Spanish Steps leading to the Chiesa di Trinita dei Monti, the Piazza di Spagna is a large public square near the center of Rome. Whether you visit in order to get a prime look at the renowned fountains, the many famous streets that lead into it or some of the modern attractions that take place there, the Piazza di Spagna offers something for every visitor.

The opportunities to find and explore the hidden wonders and treasures of Rome are nearly endless and there is no other city in the world that combines so well the impressions of days past and present. While you should definitely make a point to stop at the big five or 10 attractions that draw the majority of visitors to Rome, one should never forget the hidden treasures of Rome that can be found in the most inconspicuous of the city’s corners.

You can find more information on the city attractions, city tours and accommodation at Romehotels.org.

So you want a puppy? Well, nothing could be more natural. After all, no creature on Earth quite smells or hugs like a fluffy little pooch. Maybe a baby duck?

There are considerations though, any time a person or family makes these life decisions. Your new pooch needs to be able to fit right into your lifestyle, your expectations, and your relationship with a new pal should start off on the right foot always. The infographic below from eBay Classifieds offers a checklist of top breeds for choosing the best fit for you and your new pup.

The Great Breed Checklist

View more documents from ebayclassifieds

As you can see, there are a lot more things to consider than just whether or not your new family member is cute or not. And too, the breeds not listed are multifute, and with their own set of wondrous (and sometimes peculiar) tendencies. Of course there’s no need for paranoia in choosing a puppy, but knowing all about the little critter before he or she arrives is a huge plus.

Business cards are great marketing tools. They give you the chance to leave a mark on a potential client, explain who you are and how to contact you, and sometimes even get you a free lunch when you toss them into those restaurant bowls. What’s not to love?

What tends to happen, however, is that we collect so many cards that we can’t keep them all. Most go into the trash or, at best, into a little drawer never to be seen again – at least until spring cleaning, when they end up in the trash anyway. Sounds familiar? Well, guess what: If you do it, so do the people to whom you give your card.

The trick is learning to catch their attention from the get-go. What better way there is than to give them a creative, interesting card they won’t want to just toss into a drawer? The idea is to look at several different elements of the process, which are:

texture

material

form

usage

message

Here are 10 examples of people who went the extra mile in creating amazing business cards.

1. 3-D Transparent

The transparent plastic of the card is nothing new, and many people have chosen that format for more interesting marketing tools. But the 3-D texture of the lettering is very different and used to great effect here. The colors and font all work well with the overall concept, and all the information you would normally find has been applied. There is also a kind of frosted look to the plastic that adds to the finished product.

2. LEGO

What better way to promote LEGO employees than making them into the toys themselves? This brilliant idea creates block people in the form of the employees and prints their name on the front. The back could easily hold an email address and phone number if printed small enough. This is a really fun idea, and anyone would be happy to keep them on their desk. That makes it a better concept because people will be sure to think of them first when needing something done.

3. Google Search

Everyone uses Google, which is doubtlessly what Dallas-based family business Laser Printing Inc. thought when it made these awesome little cards. Made of paper and so cheap to create, they just used the classic search engine design. Notice the URL, phone number and a small description right there for you to read – all while showing off what it can do through its own business. I want to see Google-calendar-styles print calendars as well. Very smart.

4. Pop-Up Card

Joe Shumbat of Actual Size Creative came up with this excellent idea to relate to the name of his company while giving something new to the idea of a business card. He made a little miniature version of himself and made it a pop-up cutout on the front. The cards are made from a thicker board than usual, making them more durable for longer lasting cards, as well.

5. Bobby Pins

Yuka Suzuki came up with this cute idea to promote her services as a hair and makeup artist. Using bobby pins, which are well known for being cheap and useful, she makes hair for the little figures on her cards. The effect is cool, and since it gives people something they can use, it will stick fresh in their mind – more so than the old corporate gift of a keychain or pen would.

6. Wood Engravings

This lumber company took a material that it has plenty of and made it work as a marketing tool. The cards are all made of solid wood that have been engraved with company information. It includes a rundown of the services it provides. Notice how it made Thomas Wood Products really stand out, as well.

7. Fortune Cookies

An example of how your business cards can actually be edible, U.K.-based designer Daniel Butler chose to put his information on a strip of paper in the center of fortune cookies. Fun, tasty and affordable, they’re passed out to impressed would-be clients so they can get Butler’s name and also a little snack.

8. Fun Sayings

These brightly colored cards all have amusing sayings. For example, “We’re the people you made fun of in school. No hard feelings,” “Would you like to be our client? Please? Pretty please?” and, “We ooze creativity. We should probably get that checked out.” They are quite cheeky and a blast to read. They are also something that the client will probably show others.

9. Meat Cards

Another edible card idea, this one actually puts the message on slices of beef jerky. On the downside, this means the cards won’t last long. But as a plus, a lot of people like jerky, and they will probably remember the experience and use your services as a result – unless they are vegetarians, in which case, you might have lost a potential customer.

10. Dog Tags

The National Greyhound Adoption Program helps to find homes for abandoned or abused greyhounds. So its use of dog tags as business cards is very unique and clever, if a little expensive. But if you handed these out to higher-up clients and organizations, you could go far.

Conclusion

There are thousands of creative and cool business cards out there. Show us your favorites; link them in the comments!

Jennifer Moline writes for the PsPrint Blog about card printing, graphic design and small-business marketing. She also thinks that movie opening titles should have an Oscar category of their own.

With the DIY craze really taking off again, there is a question in the minds of newcomers: What is upcyling and recycling, and is there an actual difference? At the core, they are very similar, as they both work to reduce the amount of resources used, either through conservation or reuse.

But while the principles behind each are the same, there is a difference in the process and how the two are done. You can utilize both to live greener life, and one can be used to save money. Making them both an important part of a better lifestyle.

Let’s take a look at each method, so you can begin applying them to your every day life.

What Is Recycling?

This is taking items that you might usually throw away – such as paper, plastic and glass – and taking them to a center that will reuse them in production. Tossing these in the trash promotes mass consumerism, making it necessary to use new resources for the same purpose in other products. It also overcrowds landfills and hurts the environment, as plastic and glass don’t naturally break down.

This can cause damage to the ecosystem and the plant and animal life living in it, while creating more pollution. Since dumps burn items to make more room, smoke is released into the air, which breaks down the ozone and creates smog.

When you recycle, you are not eliminating this process. However, you are reducing it and helping over time to make the world a cleaner place. All while canceling out the new items you will buy that require the same materials for packaging. This can be done even through the recycling of electronics and furniture, and so you should always look for places in your area that specialize in this kind of collection.

What Is Upcycling?

Unlike recycling, you are not breaking down items to go into an upgraded version. You are just reusing something for a different purpose, or giving it to someone else who might want it for the original purpose. For example, when you donate to a second hand shop (or buy from one), you are upcycling that item to it, as it is still used rather than being thrown away in favor of buying something to replace it.

This also helps keep consumerism down, and provides lower cost options to items that might have been very costly before. You can save a lot of money this way, help the less fortunate get what they need, or help to promote the creation of more durable products in an age where craftsmanship has been largely lost in the dominance of large corporations.

One other way to upcycle is through taking an old item and making it into a new one. Websites like Etsy have become well known for this process, as users have stores filled with things like clothes, furniture and art made entirely of old, broken down items no longer useful in their original form.

What You Can Do

Using both of these in your daily life is simple. Just begin sorting and recyling old trash, and donate or reuse old items to reduce what is bought new. It is cleaner, more eco-friendly, socially responsible and will save you money in a time where budgets can be tight.

See how easy it is?

There is no denying that green is one of the most vibrant and beautiful colors in nature. It is a sign of life and vitality, bringing to mind spring and summer, leaf-covered trees and mountains. People use it in numerous dyes or fill their homes with houseplants to bring a little of the shade indoors. It is hard not to love green.

When dealing with photography, you have a unique opportunity to capture this color in all its glory from the environment all around you. It photographs beautifully and can easily be enhanced to further provide contrast against other colors or backgrounds.

These Flickr groups manage to bring the best together, showing off the ways that members have been able to capture the bright, full color for all to see.

1. Green or Blue Colors in Nature

This moderated group has been around for several years, taking submissions of nature photos that have a dominant blue or green color, preferably both in the same shot. The rules are simple: only naturally occurring subjects, the photo much be almost completely green or blue, and no photomanipulations allowed. Three photos can be submitted per day. So far, there are more than 7,000 shots in the pool. This one is also great for spring calendar design inspiration!

2. Green + Rust

Rust is an annoyance in real life, but beautiful in photography. It adds color and texture with a lovely old look and all completely naturally. So it is no surprise that many choose to use it as the focus of their photographs. This group features shots that have rust against something green, such as on an object or in the background. You can post three items into the pool each day, and there are more than 2,000 shots already there.

3. Green Clothes

There are only two very simple rules here: green clothing and no nudity. So anyone who is wearing clothing that is mostly or all green is the welcome subject of your photos. There are some really great shots here, including retro-looking photos that were made to look older, including the fashion. You can post as many as 25 things a day, and there are more than 8,000 shots in the pool.

4. Green

This group doesn’t allow nudes, but it welcomes model shots. The group also wants you to invite your friends, because the more the merrier. The pictures all have to have a good amount of green, but it doesn’t have to make up the majority of the photo. Just be involved in the subject of the shot or have enough to generate focus on its own. You can post as many as eight things into the pool a day, and there are more than 8,000 shots currently submitted.

5. Green Portraits

The group doesn’t want either mosaics, framed pictures, or anything that has been heavily edited. Light Photoshop is fine for the sake of enhancement, but too much and it will reject the photo. The group also doesn’t allow portraits of children or pets. But otherwise, anything goes on this green group. You can post as many as 3 things a day, and there are just more than 1,600 photos in the pool.

6. Green Leaves

Leaves are usually the first thing that come to mind when we think of the color green. This group is entirely about those leaves, but only green ones. If they are predominantly another color, the photo won’t be accepted. There are no limitations on how many times you can post per day, and there are more than 8,700 photos in the pool.

7. Green [A World of Colors]

The subject of your photo here is unimportant, as long as the main color is green. This includes black and whites, as long as the subject itself has green as the primary color against the rest of the black-and-white photo. Otherwise, there are no real rules. You can post as you see fit, and the group already has more than 6,400 of some of the most impressive green photos on Flickr.

8. Green Circle

This is a really interesting idea. In support of World Community Arts Day, this group is dedicated to photos or artistic crafts that have been inspired by the green circle logo of the event. It led to some gorgeous abstract works, including photography, that you will be sure to enjoy. There is no limit on submissions, and the group has more than 1,400 photos – impressive, given how specific the niche is.

9. Green Is Beautiful

Widely considered one of the best on Flickr, this group has truly stunning photographs that you just have to see. Everything has to be done mostly in green, but the subject is open to the tastes of the photographer. You won’t find pictures this amazing anywhere else – especially since it is the largest green group on Flickr, with more than 500,000 photos in the pool. You can submit 50 images per month.

10. Top 30 Green

The name of the group is somewhat misleading. This is not a consistent list of the top 30 green photos on Flickr. Instead, it regularly switches the shots out, allowing 30 at a time to be in the pool. This is a great way of operating and one that people tend to appreciate. The people who remain in the top votes end up top 30 winners, who are in a separate list for viewing.

Public service announcements serve a very specific purpose: to inform the public and curb dangerous behavior. There has been a lot of controversy over the years, as organizations have been accused of using scare tactics to try and control the viewers.

But the intent usually comes from the right place, and so they continue to be used on television, billboards, magazines and even on the radio.

Do They Work?

There has been a question of whether or not extreme images and messages are truly effective in stopping behavior. Research is mixed on the issue. One one hand, a study done by the 2008 Partnership Attitude Tracking Study (PATS) showed that media campaigns aimed at stopping drug use in youth had made a viewable impact of 42% of those teens who viewed them.

But other studies have shown just as clearly that PSA’s are unlikely to stop drug users from continuing, due to the factors of willpower versus addiction. There is also a risk of causing offense rather than providing a genuine platform for change (according to eCig.org, provider of Green Smoke Coupons). An example of this was the UK safe driving commercial that showed a little girl dying after being struck by a car.

Thankfully, there at least seems to be a benefit of using PSA’s to prevent behaviors, and to inform of dangers the public may not fully appreciate. Here is a collection of anti-smoking campaigns that use children to press the message of secondhand smoke and children mimicking parental behavior.

1. Children In Heaven

“Smoking kills” is still one of the most used PSA slogans in the world. In this PSA, they manage to convey that with both subtlety and punch. It shows a little girl staring at you from the picture. Around her head is a halo made of smoke, and below the message that secondhand smoke will help your child “get to heaven quicker”.

2. Cute Canadian PSA

Video

Most people know not to smoke when pregnant, because of lung complications and possible problems with the birth weight, among other health factors. But for those who aren’t aware – or don’t know how serious the issue is – here is a Canadian commercial where an adorable little boy reminds us. His mother is pregnant, he says, and he is worried that she will smoke around his sibling like she smoked around him. Sweet, effective and without the disturbing imagery.

3. Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation

This UK based organization is a non-profit dedicated to improving lung health through spreading tobacco awareness. In these ads, they give the alarming statistic that 17,000 children in Britain are hospitalized due to secondhand smoke every year. The pictures show incredibly young kids with an oversized adult arm holding a lit cigarette. They are shocking images, and very well made.

4. Suffocation

If you were looking for something potentially upsetting in your PSA, this would be it. It shows a crying little boy with smoke surrounding his head in a way that is similar to a plastic bag over his head. In fact, at first glance that is exactly what it appears to be, as though someone were trying to smother or suffocate him. The message below is “Smoking isn’t just suicide, it is murder.” An extreme statement, to be sure.

5. 15,000 Cigarettes

The Peruvian League Against Cancer created this ad campaign in an attempt to show the dangers to a smoker’s family, and that it is ultimately others who pat the price of their tobacco use. They gathered together an incredible 15,000 used cigarette butts that are reaching towards a cowering little girl. The final result was a little cheesy, but the work they put into the ad is obvious, and the concept was really good.

6. Like Father, Like Son

Video

This is a classic anti-smoking ad that was originally released in the US back in 1967. What is funny about it is that the first thing I thought was that it looked more like a safe-driving ad, given the little boy sitting in the front seat of a convertible with no seat belt. It’s like two PSA’s for the price of once, isn’t it?

Conclusion

You may have your own opinion on whether or not the effectiveness of public service announcements outweigh the occasional emotional exploitation used in making them. But whether you like it or not, they are here to stay.

In the last few years, science-fiction has once again become huge. The concept of space and time merge to create a new genre of futuristic entertainment, and it is slowly leaking into other categories as well. Art and design are good examples of this.

From murals for bedrooms and DIY home decor kits to the wider world of Internet design, it is easy to find instances where space has been utilized as the main theme. With the possibilities of color, shape and object, this is far from a shocking development. You can do just about anything with a good space-inspired web page, for example.

But with so much popularity mingling with possibility, it can make it difficult to establish your own idea without copying someone else’s. The best way around this is to take a look at recent trends and let them inspire you as you adapt your own version.

Here are some excellent examples of space-themed web designs that show the beauty of the universe and the capabilities of modern Internet graphics.

QuickSend

Something about space just makes you think of speed, which is probably why QuickSend chose the motif for its website. But it went with a simple idea, utilizing the emptiness of space without making it appear barren.

The dark blue of the sky with the complex stars and colors around the name give it just enough push to keep it from being too minimalist while removing any chance of the image being cluttered.

Positive Hype

Because Positive Hype is a creative design company, you expect a good web page. Luckily, it delivers and shows its skills to the client right off the bat. It went with a space theme, but the company gave it a little extra.

The “plus” sign (+) shows off the name itself and provides a nice visual. But the colors and the way they present the metaphor is well done and different from anyone else. The site also shows that you don’t have to get so literal with the universe ideas.

Space O Technologies

With a name like Space O Technologies, it would be a serious misstep not to have a space theme on the homepage. Namely, it would make no sense – what else could the company provide?

A giant “O” with a huge amount of blank space on every side? It isn’t the same. But it went with a much busier design scheme, meant to imitate planets in orbit. It could have done a better job, frankly, but it does offer an interesting concept that could easily be changed and cleaned up.

TUI Space

This one is a little more on the sci-fi side. The front page reads “Greetings Earthlings,” and there is a show reel featuring a space theme that you can play if you choose. I find the look a little bland, and I think it could have pushed the whole alien idea a little more. But the basic concept is good.

BEI Blog

This is one of my favorites. It has a breathtaking picture of planets against an expansive universe, with gorgeous colors and even a futuristic flare. Its logo with the tags is a little strange, given the rest of the motif. But the background really is well done and will be sure to inspire anyone. It reminds me of those posters I had as a child up on my walls.

Emerging Earth Community

I remember when I was younger, I would sit with my cousin at his place and watch the satellite view of the Earth below for hours on end as it slowly orbited our turning planet. The back image on this website reminds me of those times as you see a full-color picture of the planet.

We Choose the Moon

This site is inspirational for anyone who is fascinated by space travel and the history of our experiences in space. We Choose the Moon is a fully interactive flash site that is very fun to play with. You can even launch Apollo 11 using a fun calendar to the left.

World Arcade

An adorable site, World Arcade is dedicated to providing flash, iPhone and Java game developers a way to generate income with their creations. But it should be offering design help, because its site is so cute it makes me want to vomit rainbows. It keeps with the science-fiction motif, but with a touch of cartoonish whimsy and childish wonder.

You can find dozens of examples of websites using space-inspired designs. What are some of your favorites?
