“What a strange book”, I said aloud to my wife after I read it the first time. I initially didn’t see the point of its story. It felt like some snippet of another story that wasn’t fleshed out. However, the art in No, No, No demands that you read it again, so I did. I was reminded of a lesson that I taught this past spring about influences and those that we surround ourselves with. In that lesson I was letting the high school students know that it was normal and expected to change. Your evolution will certainly mean getting different friend groups for one reason or another. They might become too sporty, and you’re not the sport-type kid. They might engage in risky behavior, and you’re smart enough to realize that it has potentially dangerous outcomes. It’s ok, nay, it’s normal and expected for you to realize that some current people in your circle need to re-drawn.

Readers in seventh grade will quickly know where the story is going and how it will most likely end. Readers in sixth grade will probably fall into the same camp. Those elementary school readers have found their jam with The Second Life of Snap. It interests boys as well as girls, which is saying something considering that the protagonist is a girl and that young age is picky with their literature. It has enough action, science-fiction fun and robot hijinks that young boys will forget they’re reading something. Avid fourth grade readers will be able to dig into the book and read it also with a little effort. Its reading level is before those other dystopian books that kids will eventually fall in to. For a narrow band of readers, The Second Life of Snap will be one of the first big kid books they read. It’s beyond a chapter book, before Harry Potter, and fits nicely into someone’s step ladder book journey if they’re seven to 11 years old.

Young audiences will come for the cats, stay for the illustrations and become engulfed in the story. They’ll listen to it once, re-read it by themselves, get lost in the illustrations and think about the scariness of the Rat Goblin.
Folktales have a certain tinge of evil in their story arc. Maybe not evil per se, but a darker antagonist that gives young ages a glimpse into that scary closet they need. The illustrations of the Rat Goblin will be a highlight of the book for the boys at story time. He looks charming, with a head full of black hair, a black cape with a blood-red lining that matches its mouth. The fact that the temple’s walls are stained with blood the next morning brings kids to use their imagination, and it’s not too much, or too graphic for pre-k kids.

The Backrooms lives in the more cerebral realm of scary movies. It’s Hannibal Lecter instead of Jason Voorhees, but take away 50% of the dialogue and 90% of the cannibalism. The film has elements of Stranger Things. Its hidden world aspect, the fact that it takes place in 1990 and that Shawn Levy was one of the producers. The Backrooms also has a strong sense of dread. James Wan was also one of the producers on the film. There’s also a nice entourage of monstrous freaks who would be at home in Wan’s, Kane Parsons’ or Levy’s individual movie.
