Students Get Animated at the HVCA

Calling artists of all ages to join the 7th annual Animation Camp taught by award winning cinematographer and media artist John Prusak and founder of non-profit Digital Arts, Film & Television (D.A.F.T) program.

The HVCA is offering two distinct camps this year.

Week One will be an intensive concentration on creating the story and building a storyboard that will help to bring your animated short to life.

Week Two will be a fast paced adventure where students learn all aspects of creating an animated short: storyboarding, directing, drawing, and filming.

Participants that attend both weeks will enjoy a modified program that gives additional advanced projects the second week. The classes are designed to encourage collaboration and to accommodate students of all abilities at HVCA, 205 W. Livingston Road in Highland, Michigan.

Students will receive a DVD of the animation shorts created and will be the special guests at the 2013 premier of the films. Select student work will be sent on to be juried for D.A.F.T.’s Michigan Film Festival that occurs annually at the DIA in downtown Detroit.

INSTRUCTOR

John Prusak, the lead instructor, has taught video and animation to students of all ages for more than 30 years; he has facilitated numerous workshops with a team of knowledgeable animators. John has worked on noted films and television shows in Michigan and Hollywood, winning numerous awards for his work.

SCHEDULE

The classes are open to for those 12 and up (including adults); it takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.  Week one runs August 12-16 and week two runs August 19-23. Tuition is $250 per week, and all supplies are provided.

Join DAFT and some of the brightest young Filmmakers in Michigan, Saturday, April 27, 2013 for DAFT’s 45th Annual Michigan Student Film & Video Festival. Best of Show Winners will have their work screened at the historic Detroit Film Theatre, part of the Detroit Institute of Arts in Midtown.

The festival is open to the public and admission is Free!
The Elementary/Junior Reel starts at 10am. The Senior Pre-Glow in the Crystal Café Starts at 11:30pm and the Senior Reel starts at 12:30pm.

Save the Date: Wednesday May 29, 2013

This preview screening of Monsters University is happening because of a special connection DAFT has to the film’s director, Dan Scanlon. Dan is a graduate of Clawson High School and has been animating since he was in elementary school.

Dan won his first big recognition at DAFT’s Michigan Student Film Festival when he was just nine years old and he won a few years later for a film called The Last Lap made while he was in DAFT’s Student Animation Workshop. Then as a senior in high school he won another Best of Show award for Andy.

With his strong portfolio Dan earned a scholarship to attend Columbus College of Art and Design and went to work for Pixar after graduation. He has worked there since 2001 on numerous films including Cars. But directing Monsters University has been his biggest project thus far.

Dan will be at the Detroit Institute of Arts for the screening which happens several weeks before the Monsters University opens. This special event is a benefit for 3 non-profits: DAFT, The Assistance League (which provides tremendous support for kids and families in need) and the Detroit Film Theatre.

Help young filmmakers in Michigan realize their dream and see their work on the big screen.  On April 27, 2013 the Michigan Student Film & Video Festival will be celebrating its 45th anniversary with a screening of student films from across the state at the historic Detroit Film Theater at the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Past winners have gone on to successful careers in the entertainment industry, even winning Academy Awards.

Kodrick will be directing his feature film in Hell, Michigan, Bruin Lake, a werewolf film, this April.  He even invited many of the students present to be production assistants during the filming.  To read an interview with Scott about his upcoming film, click here.

Meet a Filmmaker and F/X Pro: At Educator appreciation night, you and your students will be able to meet Scott Kodrik, founder of Creature Division FX group, a special effects and makeup artist who has worked on 32 films, including Godzilla, The Santa Clause, Jumanji, The Five Year Engagement, Mortal Kombat, Batman and Robin, and in television shows such as Hercules and the Budweiser Frogs commercials.
