100 Passages Final Thoughts: If you kept up with the Daily Bible Clip for the past year, you have successfully memorized 100 Bible passages! Congratulations! (The passage above is #101 if you're an overachiever.) Even if you had mixed success in actually memorizing every passage, you also read some 280 devotional messages and prayers based on those passages. God promises that his word does not return to him empty. Your faith has been fed!
I thank God for your love for his word, and the desire he created in you to consistently spend time in it.
What's next? I plan on taking a (hopefully brief) break from writing the DBC. In the next day or three I plan to send out a brief survey. The survey will enable me to:

· Measure past and future interest in the DBC.

· Provide an opportunity to unsubscribe or make changes to your subscription.

· Receive feedback regarding what you liked and what could be improved.

· Bounce ideas off you for our next Bible reading / memorizing goal.

It would help me greatly if you would take the time to fill it out. Your honest input will be greatly appreciated!

Thoughts for the day: If you were in God's presence in this life, you would collapse in abject terror. God's holiness would not comfort you, but lead you to recognize your deserved punishment. In eternity, the believer experiences the close, personal care of God, and rejoices in it. Sin is gone forever. We are pure, holy and blameless before God, inside and out, thanks to our Lord Jesus Christ.

Thoughts for the day: The joys of heaven are beyond our capacity to understand. So the Bible often describes it in terms of what it is not instead of what it is. No tears. No death or mourning or crying or pain. Not like the current order of things. List as many things as you can that make this world and this life less than perfect. None of that will be a part of the next life. So what will it be like? Better than you can ever imagine!

Prayer: Father, I look forward to the indescribable joys of eternal life with you. When days here on earth are rough, fill my heart and mind with visions of the eternal glory you have promised me and every believer. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Thoughts for the day: God considers us "his people." We belong to him twice over. He created us, so our life belongs to him. But sin means we are spiritually dead and enemies of God. And so he gave us life again… spiritual life through the shed blood and death of his dearly beloved Son. How great is his love for us!

Thoughts for the day: The prophet Isaiah foretold the birth of a son who would be called Immanuel (which means "God with us.") Jesus came in humility… in human flesh. God with us! His perfect life and innocent death mean our sins are forgiven, so God accepts us. Yet the end of all things is yet to come. Satan, the world and our own flesh battle against God and his will. But the day is soon coming when Jesus will return in glory to bring us to be with him forever. We will live in the presence of God forever. And this is the essence of heaven: God in all his glory dwelling with us. Anticipate that great and glorious day!

Prayer: Dear Father, I can't imagine what it will be like to see you face to face, but I can hardly wait to experience the beauty, warmth, glory and joy! Help me to stay focused on my heavenly goal. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Thoughts for the day: Revelation 21-22 describes in detail the Church in glory. It descends from heaven. It is massive, with a solid foundation, impenetrable walls, and gates to enter. It is constructed of the most precious materials for unimaginable beauty. It is bright, illumined by the glory of God. There is no temple, because God is always, immediately present. In the city are the throne, a river, streets of gold and a tree of life. God's children live there, worshiping, serving, and ruling with him forever. This is your future!

If you have time… read Revelation 22:3-7. Better yet, if you have time, read Revelations chapters 21 and 22.

Prayer: Dear Lord, what an amazing place you prepare for me! Give me faith, hope and patience while I wait for this gift of your grace. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Thoughts for the day: Our limited, sinful human minds cannot begin to grasp the majesty, glory and splendor of heaven. It is not only beyond our experience, it is beyond our ability to imagine. So God uses something we know to give a small hint of the heavenly glories we do not know. We know what a city is like. It is a place designed to offer a safe and comfortable existence for the people that inhabit it. Heaven is like that, but the inhabitants are believers, and they dwell in eternity in a place perfectly secure and with every need provided. We know what a bride on her wedding day is like. She is prepared to enter a life-long union with the man she loves, and so spares no expense or effort to look her best for him. When Jesus returns, his bride, the church, will enter an eternal union with Christ. But the twist is that he has spared no expense or effort to make her look perfect for him. We still can't fully grasp heaven, but these word pictures help!

Prayer: Dear Father, I can't imagine the glory that awaits me. But I do eagerly anticipate it. Keep the vision of this beautiful, glorious existence before my eyes that I may always have hope, peace and joy. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Thoughts for the day: The Church is portrayed as the bride of Christ beautifully dressed for the wedding day. She wasn't always so lovely. In fact, she was downright homely, homeless, and hopeless. But Christ made her lovely. He cleaned her up. Washed her sins away by his own blood. He personally sacrificed everything to make her holy, blameless and pure. You are a part of that Church! You are stunningly beautiful to Jesus.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I was not lovely because of the filth of my sin. But you removed my guilt. You cleaned me up. You have made me lovely. Help me to see myself as you have declared me to be. Amen.

Thoughts for the day: When Jesus returns, our bodies will rise and we will live body and soul with God forever. Bodies need a place. The place we will live is in "a new heaven and a new earth." We will live in God's immediate presence. We will live in his light. He will provide for our every need. There will be no sorrow, pain, hunger, loss… only joy and security with God. All of this is a gift given by God's grace through Jesus Christ. To him be all praise!

Prayer: Father in heaven, I look forward to being with you. I look forward to being rid of all sin, sorrow, heartache and pain. Keep me faithful until death that I may receive the crown of life. Amen.

Thoughts for the day: This world is broken. Sometimes you feel it more than others. But sooner or later you always feel it. The book of Revelation gives great comfort. No matter how bad things get, 1) Christ's Church will not be overcome, and 2) there will be a new heaven and a new earth. All that is now broken will be no more. Christ has won the victory, and in Christ you will too!

Prayer: Heavenly Father, keep my focus on the eternal goal. Give me patience, perseverance and courage in this broken world. Keep me strong in the faith until I see the new heaven and the new earth. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Thoughts for the day: "He will come back." We easily become nearsighted, focusing on earthly health, wealth and happiness. When these fail (and they eventually do), we become discouraged and lose hope. But this verse reminds us this world is temporary and passing. Jesus will return to judge all people, and all who believe in him will live with God forever. Keep your eyes on the eternal goal. All day today, repeat to yourself: "He will come back."

Prayer: Dear Lord, forgive me for being distracted by the things of this world. You are coming back! Help me live with that good news in the forefront of my mind that my focus and priorities line up with your will. Amen.

Thoughts for the day: 40 days after his resurrection, Jesus ascended into heaven. His disciples watched as he ascended higher and higher… until clouds obscured him from view. Who knows how long they would have stood there looking up? An angel interrupts their gaze and announces that Jesus would return… but not that day. God doesn't want us to look in the sky idly waiting for Jesus. Yes, he is coming! But until he returns we have much work to do here on earth! Lead others to the Savior through your love and words!

Prayer: Jesus, you have saved me and have prepared a place in heaven for me! But you have not called me to twiddle my thumbs while I wait for your return. Empower me to live a life overflowing with your love and with your truth. Amen.

Review: Luke 2:10-11 But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord."

Thoughts for the day: A sign points to something, informs about something. Jesus wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger was a sign. Jesus didn't come to live in luxury, or to be served by the people he created, or to overthrow earthly oppressors, or to set up an earthly kingdom. He came as a spiritual king to free us from the eternal consequences of our spiritual slavery to spiritual oppressors. The shepherds didn't know all the details that night of Jesus' birth, but they had a sign indicating the kind of King Jesus was. When they saw the baby, they worshiped him, they rejoiced, and the spread the good news to everyone they met. Will you do the same?

Prayer: Thank you, Jesus, for your humble service to me, for your sacrifice on the cross, for the comforting guarantee and assurance that are mine through your glorious resurrection. I live my life to the praise of your glorious name. Amen.

Thoughts for the day: Angels appear in shining glory, praising God and announcing the greatest news the world had ever heard. Christ the Savior is born! The shepherds would want to go and worship. But where is he? In a mansion? In a golden crib? With a silver spoon in his mouth? No. In a stable. Wrapped in cloths. Lying in a feeding trough. Did the shepherds look at each other quizzically? Why was God in human flesh who arrived to carry out God's eternal rescue operation lying in a manger? He humbled himself. He took the form of a servant to be our substitute. He took our place in life, holy and perfect. He took our place in death, accepting the punishment we should have received. Worship him!

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I can't even comprehend what your Son gave up when he took on human flesh to save us. I can only marvel at your amazing grace. Thank you! I say it. I sing it. I live it. Amen.

Thoughts for the day: Four months ago we celebrated the birth of the world's Savior. Last week we pondered his suffering and death on the cross for the sins of the world. Last Sunday we rejoiced in Christ's resurrection which proves his identity and the successful completion of his salvation work. Good news of great joy! But who is this good news for? "ALL the people." Do ALL the people in your life know this good news? Family? Friends? Co-workers? Neighbors? Who can you share it with this week? Whom will you invite this week?

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for the good news I have been privileged to hear and believe. Show me opportunities this week to be your instrument to share the good news with others. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Review: Revelation 3:16 "So, because you are lukewarm--neither hot nor cold--I am about to spit you out of my mouth."

Thoughts for the day: The shepherds were surrounded by the glory of the Lord, and were afraid. The angel appeared to turn their fear to joy. A Savior is born! At the empty tomb, when facing the glory of the Lord in the presence of an angel, the women were afraid. But their fear turned to joy at the news of Christ's resurrection. If you are honest with yourself and God about your sins, you will be filled with fear. But because Christ was born, lived, died and is risen, your fear turns to joy as you trust in him. Your sins are forgiven! Eagerly anticipate his 2^nd coming.

If you have time… read Revelation 1:9-20

Prayer: Heavenly Father, you are holy and I am not. This makes me afraid. But in Christ you made me holy, forgave my sins, and promised me eternal life. I rejoice in your great salvation! In Jesus' name. Amen.

Review: 1 John 3:16 "This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers."

Thoughts for the day: Perhaps, this seems out of season. However, we are quickly approaching our 100^th passage. The final group of passages highlight Christ's 1^st and 2^nd comings. His 1^st coming was as a helpless baby born of the virgin Mary. We might have missed the significance had the angel not told us. He is the Savior: Christ the Lord. God became man and dwelled among us. He came to rescue us by living the life God demands: perfect in every way. He redeems us by dying the death we deserve. And his resurrection is the guarantee. This is good news of great joy for all the people… for you!

If you have time… read Luke 2:1-21

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for sending Jesus to be my Savior. Remind me to rejoice in this good news throughout the day today… and to share it too. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Review: 1 John 3:16 "This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers."

Thoughts for the day: God calls us to be passionate for Christ and his truth. God owes us nothing… except just punishment for our sin and rebellion. But instead he gave us everything in his Son, Christ Jesus. He is our Savior. Our rescuer. Our forgiver. Our leader. Our protector. Our life-giver. Wow! How can we respond to this with apathy? How can we remain lukewarm? No wonder this disgusts our God. Has earthly prosperity bred in you apathy about Christ's incredible rescue mission? There's nothing like Jesus. Remain in him. Serve him. Love him. Follow him. Share him. And do all of these things all of the time no matter what the earthly cost. Be passionate for Christ!

Prayer: Dear Lord, rekindle in my heart a passion for Christ and his truth, and may that passion be evident to everyone in my life. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Thoughts for the day: We are looking at our final "3:16" passage. This verse was originally spoken to the church in Laodicea, but it could have been written to American Christians today. The church was in an affluent trading town. Distracted by earthly wealth and relying upon it, the believers had become apathetic about following Christ. Such indifference about matters of eternal importance makes Jesus sick. Monday morning leftover church percolator coffee – disgusting! Christians that have lost their zeal for Christ – disgusting! What can you do with them? Spit them out. Ponder the following questions today. Has your faith become to Jesus like Monday morning church coffee? What causes that? What heats faith up again?

If you have time… read Revelation 3:14-22

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I know and believe that my horrible sin is forgiven by Jesus' suffering and death. How have I let the things of this world become more engaging to me than that? How could I rely on things passing and temporary instead of you? Forgiven me. Renew me with the fire of your love, and ignite my heart and life with Jesus and for Jesus. Amen

Thoughts for the day: Christ loved us so much that he sacrificed his life for his enemies. His loving sacrifice made us his friends. Connected to Christ, we begin to resemble Christ and his love. We love others as he loved us.

Thoughts for the day: Christ laid down his life…for us. Let that sink in by thinking for a moment about how little you deserved such love. What would you include on your top-ten list of "worst sins?" Think of moral failings. Broken relationships. Poor management of time or money. Cruel words. Selfishness. Disregard for God and his Word. Yet for us Christ laid down his life! When you know his love, trust it is truly yours, and are filled with his love to overflowing, it will spill out into all of the relationships in your life.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for loving me enough to be my substitute. You give me your holiness. You take my sin. Your death is the full payment. Amazing love! Move me to love everyone I see today to your glory. Amen.

Thoughts for the day: What is love? An emotion? A warm, fuzzy feeling? Chemistry? The answer is found in Jesus. He describes love by showing it. He laid down his life for us. The perfect, holy, blameless Son of God took on human flesh. And he remained perfect throughout his life. He accepted our sin and guilt, and made full payment at the highest personal cost: his life. This is love. Faith in Christ responds with a similar love for one another.

Prayer: Jesus, thank you for loving me in spite of who I am and what I’ve done. Thank you for loving me enough to sacrifice yourself on the cross. Let your love prompt my love today. Amen.

Review: 2 Thessalonians 3:16 “Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.”

Thoughts for the day: True godliness comes through faith in Jesus. How did he give it? You would never have guessed, so God revealed it. What follows was either an ancient hymn about Christ, or perhaps an ancient creed – a confession of faith.

·         He appeared in the flesh (True God born of the virgin Mary)
·         was vindicated by the Spirit (Because he was raised by the Holy Spirit, we know his payment for sin was made, complete, and accepted.)
·         was seen by angels (Either a reference to the angels’ witness of the resurrected Christ, or “angels” – which means messengers – refers to the disciples who witnessed the risen Christ.)
·         was preached among the nations (The gospel rapidly spread throughout the ancient world as people boldly preached about Jesus.)
·         was believed on in the world (The preaching was not without effect. Faith was created in the hearts of people around the world.)
·         was taken up in glory.” (A reference to Christ’s ascension and his continuing reign in glory at the right hand of the Father.)

If you have time… read 1 Timothy 2:3-7

Prayer: Father, thank you for your amazing rescue plan accomplished through your Son, Jesus. Through him, you give me true godliness. Amen.
