Are you proud to be an American? I had an interesting experience the other day in water aerobics. Some how the ‘50s and the KGB came up in conversation. I said, “Yes, I remember them. We hated them. The KGB “disappeared” people in the middle of the night and tortured them.” Boy, did that stop the conversation.

The U.S. Military has no soul. I am not talking about the soldiers, the cannon fodder, the collateral damage, the pawns. I mean the Defense Department and government that oversees it. The Obama Administration has made GW’s torture and secrecy its own. Five more people came forward to complain that they were victims of U.S. rendition. From today’s Times…

WASHINGTON — A federal appeals court on Wednesday ruled that former prisoners of the C.I.A. could not sue over their alleged torture in overseas prisons because such a lawsuit might expose secret government information.

By a 6-to-5 vote, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit dismissed a lawsuit against Jeppesen Dataplan Inc., a Boeing subsidiary accused of arranging flights for the Central Intelligence Agency to transfer prisoners to other countries for imprisonment and interrogation. The American Civil Liberties Union filed the case on behalf of five former prisoners who say they were tortured in captivity — and that Jeppesen was complicit in that alleged abuse.

The only secrets I can see being exposed here are the one’s that speak to our despicable activities. Speaking of despicable activities, the military still does not acknowledge “traumatic brain injury.” To get a “Purple Heart” for TBI, the soldier must document when he received it. That is kind of hard to do when after a TBI one cannot even remember what one has said minutes ago. The governmental response to PTSD and TBI has been woefully inadequate. Mostly what the VA is doing to treat veterans for PTSD and TBI is drugging them into oblivion. I could cite an article, but you can google “drugging veterans” and choose your own. I mean, c’mon!

There is a response that will reduce terrorism in the world and in Afghanistan and, wouldn’t you know, it is not a military program. If you want to know what it is, or even help, read about it here.

The military must stop trying to end terrorism. Their activities only further the Jihadi’s cause. Additionally, they must begin to care about the lives they are trashing, including our own. They must find a soul, admit mistakes, and become Americans we can be proud of.

Washington Post columnist David Broder last week cited New Jersey’s freshman Gov. Chris Christie as a role model for Pennsylvania’s Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Corbett, who similarly boasts of a platform to limit government and fight crime.

But Broder got the Christie story completely backward in his Sept. 2 column. The columnist described Corbett, Pennsylvania’s attorney general and also a former U.S. attorney there, this way:

His claim to fame is that his investigations of corrupt legislators have so far sent several of them to jail. In this race, he has modeled himself on Chris Christie, the freshman governor of New Jersey, promising, as Christie did, to oppose new taxes and shrink state government.

This exclusive report by the Justice Integrity Project that I lead shows the following: Far from limiting government, Christie wasted vast amounts of taxpayer funds to help himself and his cronies.

Look no farther than his scheme as U.S. attorney to connive with Solomon Dwek, a big-time bank swindler and brothel operator, to crush political opponents with criminal charges timed to explode at the beginning of the 2009 Christie campaign.

The Christie-and-Dwek tale recounted below illustrates why we need more investigative reporting in politics as this year’s election season heats up. Pundits seldom deign to discuss obvious dirty tricks, much less the deviltry from unwarranted criminal charges against political targets to destroy them and their families as part of an election strategy.

This is a huge nationwide problem, as indicated by the Bush White House’s notorious purge of nine of the nation’s 93 presidentially appointed U.S. attorneys for political reasons after the 2006 elections. The unprecedented mid-term firings were preceded by DOJ Chief of Staff Kyle Sampson’s email to Karl Rove advocating “loyal Bushies” in those jobs.

Karl Rove

Both the Bush and Obama DOJ then proceeded to keep business-as-usual by whitewashing their internal investigation of DOJ. First, Bush’s DOJ appointed Nora Dannehy, a secretly compromised prosecutor, to lead the nationwide probe, as the Justice Integrity Project reported earlier this summer in The Daily Censored. Then Bush’s DOJ limited Dannehy’s investigation to essentially one of the fired prosecutors.

DOJ could thus claim an internal investigation while ignoring all the other prosecutors fired or the conduct of those remaining, plus the impact on whatever innocent victims were created during the nationwide scandal. The Obama-Holder DOJ has gone along every step of the way in maintaining this cover-up ─ with the benefit of continuing their own power to use DOJ precisely as they want.

The nasty after-effects of the scandal continue to shape our nation’s politics. In fact, there’s no way to assess this year’s elections without understanding the root causes of how we’ve created an anything-to-win culture of scheming and lying by prosecutor-turned-politicians, with political pundits glossing over it either by choice or by cluelessness .

*****

Let’s start by examining how Christie himself responded to the threat posed by the 2006 White House-orchestrated purge of those deemed insufficiently political in using their powers controlling the central government’s criminal and civil litigation in their regions.

During 2006, Christie was placed on a preliminary list of those slated for firing for insufficient political loyalty, according to subsequent testimony. His actions after that included:

•	Pre-election subpoenas tarnishing New Jersey’s Democratic Senate candidate Robert Menendez 61 days prior to election. The subpoenas never resulted in charges but prompted many headlines suggesting corruption by Menendez before he narrowly won reelection. Christie, not surprisingly, survived the political purge just after the election that cost eight of his peers nationally their jobs and sent a powerful message to all remaining prosecutors.

•	No-bid contracts for tens of millions of dollars to prominent Republican former Justice Department officials to monitor settlement agreements with corporate criminal defendants. One contract valued at $28 million to $52 million went to former Republican U.S. Attorney Gen. John Ashcroft, Christie’s former boss, to monitor a kick-back scheme by Zimmer Holdings to induce surgeons to use its medical devices. A similar no-bid deal went to former New Jersey U.S. Attorney Herbert Stern, Christie’s mentor.

John Ashcroft

Far from “limiting government” in any normal sense, these were sweetheart deals for everyone except the taxpayers. The public incurred the necessary of costs of investigating and documenting criminal activity. But corporate payments to make amends went to the coffers of party insiders instead of going to the government or victims.

There’s an additional way Christie’s contracts for cronies scheme looted taxpayers, albeit in gray areas presumptively legal: The former U.S. attorney Stern, other principals in his firm and their relatives benefitting from the no-bid contract kicked back contributed $24,000 to the Christie gubernatorial campaign, according to an in-depth report by Factcheck.org, a project of the non-partisan Annenberg Public Policy Center. Taxpayers funds were then drawn down to triple the donation to $72,000 because of the state’s requirement to provide a multiplier to private donations, investigators reported.

Christie’s biggest step in scoring points in his inner-party circles as a loyal apparatchik was a plan to empower bank swindler Dwek with federal funds to set up defendants in “Bid Rig III” (a code term devised by law enforcement) in a sting operation.

Earlier, Dwek bilked banks out of $50 million and ran a cruise ship brothel in the Caribbean, according to court testimony this year and last.

Christie’ DOJ filed criminal charges and worked out a deal for him to help create new cases. As part of this, the feds provided Dwek with funds to donate to local campaigns. He and his associates then gathered evidence that recipients were responding in a fashion that could prompt bribery and honest-services types of criminal charges.

In a potential violation of the Hatch Act, Christie twice sought political advice from Rove about a gubernatorial run, according to Rove’s 2009 congressional testimony.

Ralph Marra

Christie resigned from the U.S. attorney’s office in December 2008 following the GOP presidential defeat. But first he made two key promotions to establish the office’s leadership. He promoted his First Assistant Ralph Marra to become acting U.S. attorney, putting in place the office leader who would finish Bid Rig III.

Christie also promoted his attorney-assistant Michele Brown, to whom he’d secretly loaned $46,000, to take Marra’s place as the number two executive in the office.

Christie was soon boasting at a 2009 campaign event in West Windsor, NJ that he was still in contact with staff from his old office and would be bringing some to Trenton:

You know, we’re going to ferret out waste and fraud and abuse in government. I think you know I’ll do that better than anybody. I’ve got a group of U.S. Attorneys sitting down in Newark still doing their jobs. But let me tell you, they are watching the newspapers.

And after we win this election, I’m going to take a whole group of them to Trenton and put them in every one of the departments because they saw a lot of waste and abuse being investigated while we were in the U.S. Attorney’s office that didn’t rise to the level of a crime. So I told them, the good news is, when we get to Trenton, we don’t have to worry about beyond a reasonable doubt anymore.

Michele Brown

As he boasted, Christie had filled the U.S. attorney’s office with what we can see were “loyal Christies.” The New York Times later reported that Brown seemed instrumental in DOJ efforts resisting news media requests for Christie’s travel records.

When the records were released “they showed,” the Times said, “the U.S. attorney often stayed at expensive hotels on the taxpayers’ dime, routinely exceeding per diem rates set for Justice Department officials.” Further, the newspaper reported that Brown accompanied Christie on 16 trips, the bulk of them in 2007 and 2008. The trips included one to London and another to a Las Vegas convention, sometimes accompanied by family or other staff.

The Loyal Christies, while operating in an Obama-led Justice Department, orchestrated on July 2003 a press conference to showcase one of the largest indictments in New Jersey history just as the 2009 election season was heating up.

Roughly half of the 44 suspects were local political figures, with the other suspects in such non-political crimes as money-laundering. All but one of the political suspects were Democrats, according to defense sources. His successor Marra worked with Dwek to grab headlines with one of the largest corruption cases in the state history on July 23.

Harper’s columnist Scott Horton saw the case immediately as part of an ongoing nationwide scandal of Bush DOJ political prosecutions that he’d been tracking elsewhere. His Manure for the Garden State 13 months ago argued that the prosecution was highly suspect.

Horton’s findings are congruent also with the research of the Justice Integrity Project into the nether world of elections. Our research is primarily about unwarranted prosecutions, often involving political motives. This also involves persistent reports from otherwise credible sources of blackmail of candidates via “opposition research,” conspiracies to change election totals by manipulating voting machine software, systematic campaign finance violations, manipulating voter registration lists, and similar tactics that are either too boring or too incendiary for normal news coverage.

Under the New Jersey plan put in motion by Christie and carried forward by his successors, federal authorities are requiring victims of Dwek’s frauds to pay Dwek between $10,000 and $12,000 a month in living expenses out of the estate of his bankrupt companies. Authorities have extraordinary – and controversial – discretion to determine legitimate expenses after Ponzi and bankruptcy proceedings, as illustrated dramatically by our recent reporting on the $3.65 billion Petters fraud in Minnesota.

In court, several of the political defendants have pleaded guilty or been convicted at trial on corruption charges, and have been sentenced to prison. Each guilty plea creates new headlines that further cement public perceptions about Christie effective work as a corruption fighter. It’s one of his enduring images as indicated by the nationally syndicated Broder column, although his election victory drew also on such related factors as widespread unhappiness with the Democratic incumbent Jon Corzine.

*****

Louis Manzo

Disrupting the orderly progression of defendants to prison is former state assemblyman Louis M. Manzo, who has mounted a nearly one-man campaign to expose the prosecution as political and otherwise abusive.

A defendant himself, Manzo and his brother Ronald were both charged with accepting $27,500 in cash payments from government informant Dwek during early 2009 in exchange for Manzo’s official assistance on development matters if he became mayor.

Manzo wrote us:

I maintain my innocence. I never took a bribe from anyone, or agreed to any corrupt action. The prosecutors in this case know that as well. The indictment is the manipulation of a corrupted prosecution, handled by some prosecutors who had personal and professional stakes in the investigation and prosecution of the Bid Rig III police action. Those stakes, as documented from the public record, were jobs for themselves or family members tied to former United States Attorney Chris Christie’s election for Governor of New Jersey in November 2009.

The presiding judge dismissed the main charges against Manzo as unfounded. But the government has refused to give up, and its appeal that could keep him in jeopardy or at least limbo for two years or more.

Authorities deny wrongdoing. Marra, the acting U.S. attorney who handled the pre-election indictments, went on to join the Christie administration as senior vice president of the New Jersey State Gaming Commission, and win absolution from an ethics complaint to DOJ’s Office of Professional Responsibility. DOJ declines to provide the text of its ruling. That’s typical of the protection that office affords to its employees and former employees against meaningful public scrutiny.

Christie put Brown, by then at a private law firm friendly to his administration, on his transition team with an assignment to bring on more of his staff. He later named her as his appointments counsel, one of at least 10 former federal prosecutors from his office he brought with him, including Marra.

The Justice Integrity Project researched the matter and identified it as a “Leading Case” of suspected Justice Department misconduct nationally, with details here.

Manzo, meanwhile is tireless in creating charts showing what he calls “undisputed facts” showing how the prosecution has been undermined by vast self-dealing and outrageous conflicts of interest by its leading figures, unfair devastation of defendant victims and apathy by ostensible watchdogs at DOJ and Congress. He says that Dwek has made vastly more donations to local Republican politicians than Democrats, under at least some circumstances constituting bribery, but that authorities declined to pursue those cases.

Manzo speaks passionately of the Christie charade of good and “limited government,” and its nationwide implications:

This is the most egregious corrupt prosecution of all the cases you at the Justice Integrity Project are bringing to light. The tragedy of Bid Rig III is that if the government will stoop this low ─ to target for prosecution grandfathers and single moms running in local elections ─ who then is safe?

Manzo is seeking not simply to preserve his freedom but to document why the prosecution system is out-of-control ─ both in New Jersey and extending to top level of his own Democratic party’s political appointees in Washington, DC.

We’ll summarize specifics shortly in a second part of this article. For now, Manzo seems a credible and indeed heroic figure from what we can tell so far. His opponents in government? Not so much.

*****

As for the top journalists whom we rely upon to inform us about such political battles?

In the spirit of continuing education, I visited the Washington Post’s auditorium this summer to hear a lecture by Broder for fellow alums of the University of Chicago. It was hard not to be impressed at his spry style, especially after reading that he received his bachelor’s degree at age 18 and celebrates his 81st birthday this week on Sept. 11. But the substance was pure tweed-jacket, faculty-club conventional wisdom, with no hint of the disasters for unwary voters.

I raised my hand to ask a question about the role of dirty tricks in elections, but was vastly outnumbered by wonks and apprentice-wonks seeking insights about more conventional fare suitable for polite discussion. I didn’t push too hard on it because Broder answered my question, in effect, by saying in a different context that he’s not about to change what he’s done for so many years.

In other words, he’s comfortable with his world and its winners, like supposed “limited government” advocate Chris Christie. But how’s that really working out for the public?

David Petraeus, and Secretary of State Hilary Clinton have all taken time from running the world to respond to a lone nutjob. Even Angelina Jolie has taken a few moments off from fighting with Brad Pitt to release a statement on Jones. In fact, it’s fair to say that Jones is now more famous than Jolie (and no doubt will soon be offered a gig on a reality show, alongside the Salahis).

So many people have commented on Jones, that if you don’t, it almost looks like you tacitly support his book burning (I’m not for it, just to assuage any incriminations).

Why do the outlandish actions of a deranged bigot get taken seriously enough that thousands of articles and hours of TV time are devoted to giving him the bully pulpit?

And how can one crazy pastors’ words really be powerful enough to “endanger” troops in Afghanistan?

Because of us.

In condemning Jones, we have made his message legitimate. We have made it worthy of discussion. Even as we berate him, even as we publicly flog him to feel better about ourselves, we have acted as PR agents for him, spreading his hateful sermons across the world.

We are Jones’ megaphone.

We have made his words powerful.

I no longer want to act as the megaphone for hatemongering outliers like Jones. I hope that we can begin to boycott these publicity stunts, that we no longer earnestly engage with the insane, and in doing so, publicize this insanity, making it a viable viewpoint, a “controversy” worthy of discussion.

Ignore Jones. Take his power away.

(Image)

As best as I can tell, that plow-hand in Gainesville has never even had the benefit of half-idiot pedagogues and broken down preachers. He acquired his theological learning by watching Jimmy Swaggart on the TV and taking copious notes. There’s a plow-hand preacher born every time a pledge number lights up on the screen. But what about congregations? They must be coming even faster than the rubes at a carnival midway. “Step right this way and see the burning books!” B. Downing

It gets better …

One of Jones’s acolytes assures us that burning the Koran will not endanger American troops. Associate pastor Wayne Sapp (I’m not making that name up) says that it simply isn’t so and that people are accountable for their own actions. Sapp wears a .40 big iron on his hip as he strides about the perimeter of the church grounds – perhaps humming Marty Robbins songs and looking out for Texas Red or Osama bin.” B. Downing

Downing hits the nail on the head here:

And of course our enemies in the benighted parts of the globe are illiterate hayseeds without any comprehension of the greater world, blinded by religious dogma and intolerant of those who don’t share their world skew. B.
Early on the morning of Friday, September 10, 2010, the Rev. Terry Jones hastily called a press conference on the steps of his church, the Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida, and emerged pale and shaken to read a short announcement to reporters from CNN, Fox, MSNBC, AP, the Daily Show, and all the broadcast networks. This is a transcript of his transformative statement:

Brothers and sisters, my children, I stand before you today truly chastened. Last night, Jesus Christ himself appeared before me. He reminded me of a simple fact I had forgotten: that God is Love.

Jesus pointed out that there are many paths to love, and that some of my actions, like posting signs proclaiming that "Islam is evil," are neither loving nor Christlike.

It is difficult for me to admit that someone else’s path toward the light as they see it may be different from mine. My certainty of purpose prompted me to suggest that we come together Saturday afternoon to burn copies of the Quran. Upon close reflection I have come to realize that burning a book considered holy by millions around the world will do nothing to spread God’s love.

As I seek a new path more in line with Jesus’s true teaching, I must learn to embrace humility. Therefore, any copies of the Quran which are brought to my tabernacle will be donated to Islamic community centers all over America. Anyone who lights a match near them will be sprayed with my grandson’s supersoaker. I have employed waterballoon snipers as backup. There will be no fires at my church.

I still find the Muslim faith abhorrent, but Jesus has helped me to understand that this says more about me than it does about Islam. I clearly have some work to do on myself, and I ask you to join me on a journey toward love and understanding. I beseech you all to come to my temple Saturday afternoon and come together not to burn books, but to join hands and pray for peace.

That is Jesus’s way. He told me himself.

Abdicating reasoning: Surrendering the debate over teaching, testing and assessment to the constables of obedience training

A recent article in the Chronicle of Higher Education confronts the issue of whether students are really learning in college classrooms and if so, how they might be able to assess learning (September 5, 2010,Why Teaching Is Not Priority No. 1http://chronicle.com/article/Why-Teaching-Is-Not-Priority/124301/).

Of course this is all part and parcel of the new ‘evidentiary’ based learning that the Obama administration says it wants. Secretary Arne Duncan and his business cohorts, on the other hand, see ‘evidence of learning’ in test scores based on the anorexic bulimic learning model of memorization and ‘thought starving’ – tube feeding and chamber pot results.

The issue of assessment and thus testing is important. Those educators that teach ‘reasoning’ or critical thinking need to know if their students are learning. How can they do this? The answer really goes back to the work done in the 1980’s and early 1990’s as the Reagan administration began the decimation of the Department of Education and rolled out A Nation at Risk. This silly document was to have large waves of repercussions on teaching and learning as both were boiled down to saturated fat or ‘information eating’. We still have not survived the horrible policies of A Nation at Risk and its sordid recommendations. It simply took a bit of time to morph into No Child Left Behind and now the horrendous Race to the Top.

Yet there has been much research on how to assess students to see if they are learning to reason. Sometime back in the early 1990’s, while teaching kindergarten and first grade I wrote an article entitled: REASONING READINESS: ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STANDARDS AND CRITICAL THINKING AS A DEVELOPMENTAL NECESSITY. You can find it at the Rouge Forum (http://www.rougeforum.org/newspaper/summer2001/reasoning.htm).

In it you will see both a critique of standardized testing, the same tests I was forced to administer to my students, and how teaching and assessment for critical thinking can be accomplished and taught. I argued that students are not only ready to reason at five years old but they must in order to become critical thinking adults. The notion that young students are not prepared to reason at a young age and therefore must be filled with pre-ordained knowledge before they can critically think is formalistic psychology and has been debunked by many studies too voluminous to quote here.

Of course the movement in critical thinking and critical pedagogy that took roots in the 1980’s before it was decimated by the right wing and ‘core standards’ crowd also involved work done in authentic assessment, such as portfolio assessments, student journal assessments, critical self-critique, and performance based learning based on relevancy in learning and teaching. All of this was quickly pushed aside and in the ‘Age of Forgetness’; it is all but lost on the generations of teachers that have come up in the ranks of teaching since then.

Left out of most teacher ‘training’ programs, critical thinking is not only never emphasized; it is not expected to be taught. Other than the three or four ‘questions’ at the back of the book critical thinking is really not well understood by most teachers nor their students. One cannot teach what one does not know and sadly the exception is the rule when it comes to teaching critical literacy. It is rarely taught.

Andrew Hacker and Claudia Dreifus, launched their new book, a fierce critique of modern academia called Higher Education? “The question mark in our title,” they write, “is the key to this book.” To their minds, little of what takes place on college campuses today can be considered either “higher” or “education.” They blame a system that favors research over teaching and vocational training over liberal arts. Tenure, they argue, does anything but protect intellectual freedom. And they’d like to see graduates worrying less about their careers, even if it means spending a year behind the cash register at Old Navy” (The Atlantic, Jennie Rothenberg Gritz July 28,2010, What’s Wrong With the American University System, http://www.theatlantic.com/culture/archive/2010/07/whats-wrong-with-the-american-university-system/60458/).

I certainly think that there is some truth to their claims, as education both ‘higher’ and early childhood education has been swallowed by commercial interests and concerns. As to the issue of ‘tenure’, this is more problematic and I would need much more time to write a about this issue. One thing we do know is that tenure protects teachers from arbitrary and capricious decisions by administrators and thus is the gatekeeper for academic freedom. However, this is not the purpose of mentioning the Hacker-Dreifus argument. It seems to me the more salient issue is not simply the material conditions of education, but also the ideological conditions as well. They are not separate nor are they blistered from each other; instead theory and practice must be seen as informing each other and thereby creating critical ‘praxis’.

Teaching ‘reasoning’ or critical thinking means that teachers themselves must understand what critical thinking is, how they use it in their daily lives, how they often fail to use it and how to actually set up the material and psychological conditions for teaching and assessing it. This is what is missing in education. Teachers are now simply dispensaries of rote information to be stomached as learning and they themselves really often do not know how to teach for thinking and thus of course cannot assess it. To be more blatant at the expense of elitist, many teachers simply are not critical thinkers themselves and thus can never be counted on to provide a rich curriculum to teach students how to think critically.

Until we begin to take critical thinking seriously; until we begin to make critical thinking a part of the curriculum teachers take when preparing for the life of teaching as well as a curriculum for daily life, we will never be able to put forth an alternative to the rancid calls for testing we hear from the corporate corridors of power. Nor will we be able to increase the critical thinking literacy rate of our citizens, promising more authoritarianism and a galloping declination in literacy. The real curriculum is life itself, of which reasoning should be a prominent part.

Of course this is not what the ruling class wants; in fact it is the last thing they wish. Gates, Walton, Eli Broad and the rest of the billionaire educational squatters who now control the purse strings of the educational agenda launched by the Duncan administration know that if citizens think critically their power will be challenged. The last thing they wish is evidentiary based learning for they know that their ruthless global economic policies, not to mention their educational polices, would come under severe scrutiny and criticism for its inequality and pervasive monopolization of everyday life. The reasoning mind is a threat to demagogues.

We are at a crossroads when it comes to discussions regarding teaching and learning. Unfortunately, what has been left out of the discussion both on the ‘right’ and ‘left’ has been the role of teaching ‘reasoning’ or critical thinking to students. Until we put this discussion back on the table and insist that students be taught to reason their way through subject matter and learn the art of self-reflection, we will continue lose the debate over teaching, learning and knowledge acquisition.

It seems unbelievable to me that after more than two decades of critical thinking and critical pedagogical discussions, in-services for teachers, countless books written, conferences and the like, we have historically suffered from amnesia once again and have thus surrendered the issue of authentic assessment to those who seek to assess obedience, not thinking. If we do not re-oxygenate the debate over assessment and testing with the need to teach and authentically assess reasoning, then we will continue to teach students what to think not how to think and as a result, will abdicate reasoning for regurgitation. We will also surrender the debate over teaching and education to corporate interests that work so hard each and every day to suffocate critical thinking.

The following are critical thinking ‘standards’ that I helped develop in concert with The Center for Critical Thinking for the Miami-Dade County School system in the late 1990’s. The standards are informally discussed. Perhaps if we could resuscitate the debate over what it means to be ‘an educated person’ we would be able to move ahead with debates over teaching, learning and assessment.

CRITICAL AND CREATIVE THINKING STANDARDS INFORMALLY DEPICTED

DADE-COUNTY, FLORIDA

The following are the critical and creative thinking strategies, informally depicted. They are stated informally so that they might be easily explained to parents, teachers and administrators.

I. Problem Solving and Decision Making

S-1 Our children begin to learn its important to be sure you clearly understand the questions you are trying to answer or problems you are trying to solve before you looks for answers or solutions. This strategy teaches students to think about how they define problems and issues and how misidentifying problems can result in faulty thinking.

S-2 Our children learn to identify the goals and purpose in what they are studying or pursuing. This strategy teaches students to think critically about what they are attempting to accomplish, their goals and objectives and the goals and objectives of others.

S-3 Our children begin to think critically about information, its sources, and how to sort, classify and otherwise form information into patterns from which they might make plausible inferences. This strategy teaches students to think about and use information critically to solve given problems.

S-4 Our children begin to think critically about information and its relevance. This strategy teaches students how to distinguish between the information that is relevant to what they are pursuing and information that is not relevant.

S-5 Our children begin to think in terms of the important questions they need to ask to find out more about what they are learning. This strategy teaches students how to formulate deep questions in given subject areas to extend their knowledge.

S-6 Our children begin to think about what they know and what they merely believe. This strategy teaches students how to critically examine and evaluate their own beliefs and the beliefs they confront in what they are studying.

S-7 Our children begin to think critically about how they make decisions and generate solutions to problems. This strategy teaches students how to make good decisions and arrive at good solutions as well as how to assess their thinking processes.

S-8 Our children begin to see that the solutions and decisions they and others come to have consequences and they begin to learn to critically explore the consequences of solutions, decisions and problems in what they are learning. This strategy teaches students how to prioritize their thinking and examine alternatives in light of their implications.

S-9 Our children begin to learn how to critically interpret situations and information and just how they come to conclusions and make decisions. This strategy teaches students inferential logic: how to make statements about the unknown based on what is known.

S-10 Our children learn to give reasons and evidence for what they believe and learn to evaluate the reasons and evidence others offer for what they believe. This strategy teaches students how to evaluate evidence and reasons in what they are learning and in their own lives.

II. Analytical and Evaluative Thinking Dimension

S-11 Our children begin to see when they are thinking in over-generalities and when they might be too simplistic in their thinking. This strategy teaches students to recognize when they and others are not being specific about what they are thinking about and gives them an opportunity to refine their thinking.

S-12 Our children begin to understand what criteria is and how they might develop it and use it to judge situations, themselves and others. This strategy teaches students how criteria is developed and used.

S-13 Our children begin to develop an understanding that not all information is reliable and that the sources of information are important when evaluating information. This strategy teaches them what sources of information are, how they differ and how they might affect what they are thinking.

S-14 Our children begin to analyze what they say and what they do and what others say and do. This strategy teaches them what an argument is, how to interpret them and how to evaluate them.

S-15 Our children begin to learn to evaluate rules, policies and behavior. This strategy teaches them what is involved in analyzing and how they can apply analysis to what people do, say and think.

S-16 Our children begin to learn to distinguish what is ideal from what is actual practice. This strategy enables students to understand that often what might be stated as an ideal way of doing things, approaching problems or making decisions, varies from what actually goes on in reality.

S-17 Our children begin to understand what a perspective is, how they are interpreted and how beliefs form points of view. This strategy teachers students that they and other have perspectives, what a perspective entails and how they might evaluate them.

III. Systematic Thinking Dimension

S-18 Our children begin to see how to apply what they are learning to diverse situations. This strategy teachers students what analogies are and how they might use analogies in thinking, as well as how to transfer what they are learning into new contexts so they might learn more.

S-19 Our children learn how the logic of disciplines are related and how they might connect what they are learning in one subject to insights in another. This strategy teaches our students the relationship between the subjects they are learning so they might understand them as systems.

S-20 Our children begin to look at situations, actions, people and products and note how they might be the same and how they might be different. This strategy teaches students what a similarity is, what a difference is and how to use similarities and differences to make choices, analyze situations and develop problem solving abilities.

IV. Collaborative Thinking Dimension

S-21 Our children begin to understand the power of dialogue as a way of learning and reasoning about diverse perspectives and ideas. This strategy teaches students how to dialogue with others about what they are thinking, whether they agree or disagree with what they are hearing or reading.

S-22 Our children begin to see how entering into points of view not keeping with their own, reasoning from their premises to their conclusions and then stepping back to see what they believe in light of what other believe is important for learning to understand people and situations. This strategy teaches students how to evaluate points of view by reasoning within them as well as how to reconcile what they believe with what others believe.

S-23 Our children begin to see how their own thinking and perspectives are developed. This strategy teachers students to think for themselves and learn to develop their own points of view regarding issues, people and situations.

S-24 Our children begin to see what it means to listen critically and actively as opposed to selectively and passively. This strategy teaches them what active listening would entail, how to sum up what people say for the sake of understanding, and how to listen to points of view to understand their logic.

S-25 Our children begin to see the power of questioning as a form of learning about themselves, what they are studying and others. This strategy teaches students how to question deeply, to go beyond questions that simply call for information and learn to question assumptions, language, points of view and whatever they are learning.

V. Emotional Intelligence/ Affective Thinking Dimension

S-26 Our children begin to see the power of investigation and how to figure things out for themselves. This strategy teaches students to investigate independently what they are learning and not to depend on others for the answers to questions or life’s problems.

S-27 Our children begin to see the importance of understanding others, even if they do not agree with them. This strategy teaches students to enter into diverse points of view with the object of understanding them.

S-28 Our children begin to learn that it is ok to say “I don’t know.” This strategy teaches students how to admit to their mistakes, realize when they don’t understand something and learn to replace self-righteousness with self-questioning.

S-29 Our children begin to see the power of curiosity and how curiosity is used to find answers to complex questions, to seek to understand, and to imagine how problems can be solved or decisions can be made. This strategy teaches students the power of imaginative and curious thinking and helps them capture what it means to “wonder” about life and what they are learning.

S-30 Our children begin to see the power of reasoning and as they do, they develop self-esteem and a belief that they can solve life’s problems through thinking. This strategy helps students develop self-confidence in their ability to think.

S-31 Our children begin to see that often there are no black and white answers for situations and issues. This strategy helps students understand that life can be unclear, that what they are studying or attempting to understand may not be transparent and that this is ok.

S-32 Our children begin to learn to arrest their impulsivity and take their time when reasoning. This strategy teaches students that there are no quick fix solutions to complex problems and lets them know that disciplined thinking and trying as hard as you can will help them become successful.

S-33 Our children begin to see what it means to be intellectually courageous; that it is ok to admit your wrong, to discover you have made a mistake, or to feel it is ok not to agree with others simply to go along. This strategy teaches students how being courageous in their thinking might make them different at times, but that this is ok as long as they can defend what they believe in light of what others believe.

S-34 Our children begin to see that put-downs have no place in thinking; that you don’t have to be mean or uncivil to someone just because you do not agree with them. This strategy helps students develop an understanding of how to engage in civil dialogue when they don’t agree with someone or something.

S-35 Our children begin to see that it is necessary to evaluate others and their thinking the same way that they would evaluate themselves and their thinking. This strategy teaches students that the rules they apply to others should be rules they are willing to accept in their own lives.

SOMETHING FOUL IN THE CHICKEN INDUSTRY AND THE USDA

The number of cases of salmonella has risen to 2.5 million a year and led to an estimated 500,000 hospitalizations and 9,000 deaths. This national epidemic was caused by a massive leap in consumer demand for the “healthier food” of chicken and by a massive failure of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

While the chicken industry has grown to a $16-billion-a-year industry, the USDA has cut its inspection staff, lowered health standards, and cracked down on employees who try to inform the public about contaminated food.

The relaxed inspection practices — known as the Streamlined Inspection System

– are literally maiming workers and killing consumers. The rate of injury and illness for workers in poultry processing plants is twice that of textile or tobacco workers and even higher than miners.

…In 1906, Upton Sinclair shocked the public with his description of the Chicago meatpacking industry in “The Jungle,” the slaughtering practices in the poultry industry today are remarkably similar. It is time the mass media blew the whistle on the USDA and the poultry industry.

This story appeared in the Summer 1989 issue of Southern Exposure. It was cited as the #10 censored story of 1989.

More than 20 years later, the Associated Press asked on August 12, 2010, “Cooking chicken on the grill this summer?“ and then warned, “Be careful. Poultry is still the leading culprit in food poisoning outbreaks, health officials said on Thursday.

“Chicken, turkey and other poultry accounted for 17 percent of the food-borne illness outbreaks reported to the government. Beef and leafy vegetables were close behind, at 16 percent and 14 percent.

“The report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention covers outbreaks in 2007. Poultry was also the No. 1 source of outbreaks in 2006.”

Cognitive Infiltration: An Obama Appointee’s Plan to Undermine the 9/11 Conspiracy Theory

Recommended Read from Project Censored

(Olive Branch Press, September 2010), by David Ray Griffin

Griffin’s meritorious effort to raise public awareness and understanding

Former Chicago and Harvard law professor Cass Sunstein, who in 2009 was appointed by President Barack Obama to direct an important executive branch office, had in 2008 co-authored an article containing a plan for the government to prevent the spread of anti-government “conspiracy theories.” Arguing that such theories are believed only by groups suffering from “informational isolation,” he advocated the use of anonymous government agents to engage in “cognitive infiltration” of these groups in order to introduce “cognitive diversity,” with the aim of breaking them up.

Noting that Sunstein’s proposal has evoked condemnations from across the political spectrum–not least because it, being similar to the FBI’s COINTELPRO of the 1960s, would be illegal–David Ray Griffin focuses on the fact that Sunstein’s primary target is the conspiracy theory advocated by the 9/11 Truth Movement. Examining Sunstein’s charge that this theory is both “harmful” and “demonstrably false,” Griffin uses both satire and overwhelming evidence to show that this twofold charge applies instead to what Sunstein calls “the true conspiracy theory” about 9/11-namely, the “theory that Al-Qaeda was responsible for 9/11.”

Cover Reviews:

“David Ray Griffin has written a devastating critique of Cass
Sunstein’s major effort to situate all critics of the official 9/11
story in the garbage pail of ‘conspiracy theory.’ Bringing to bear
his formidable philosophical and theological skills, Griffin
brilliantly illuminates this cognitive/ political concern,
demonstrating that the American people will never find out what
really happened on that fateful day until we as citizens insist on
considering all available evidence with a fresh and open mind.”
—Richard Falk, professor emeritus, Princeton University

“There should be a book entitled the ‘Courage of David Ray Griffin.’
His continuing efforts to speak truth to power regarding issues of
9/11/2001 are most admirable. Griffin’s Cognitive Infiltration
addresses the central denial of key government officials in both
parties who, when faced with overwhelming factual evidence of serious
problems with the 9/11 Commission’s report, lash out at the very
people seeking truth and justice. Cass Sunstein is one of those
Harvard ‘insiders’ who not only denies open democratic questioning of
9/11, but overtly advocates the disruption and cognitive infiltration
of such groups.”
—Peter Phillips, Professor of Sociology, Sonoma State University,
and President of Media Freedom Foundation/Project Censored

“Unrestrained and unchallenged combination of top level political
power and academic intellectual arrogance can be a dangerous prelude
to governmental censorship and potential criminalization of
individuals who dare to challenge ‘official’ versions of various
catastrophes and major events of a highly controversial nature. Dr.
David Ray Griffin exposes and analyses this grave concern in an
objective, scholarly dissection of a sociopolitical proposal set
forth by Cass Sunstein in 2008. Readers of Cognitive Infiltration
will be both shocked and enlightened by this well documented and
brilliantly written book.”
—Cyril H. Wecht, M.D., J.D., past president, American Academy of
Forensic Sciences, and past president, American College of Legal
Medicine

“In 2009, President Obama appointed a Harvard Law School professor,
Cass Sunstein, to be head of the White House’s Office of Information
and Regulatory Affairs. This was after Sunstein had made a
controversial proposal, which would later inflame the internet, for
‘cognitive infiltration’ of the 9/11 Truth Movement, with the aim of
‘breaking up the hard core of extremists who supply conspiracy
theories.’ Professor Griffin has responded to Sunstein’s dangerous
argument with a patient, point-by-point and much needed refutation.
He relentlessly shows how Sunstein himself is guilty of the very
mentality he warns against: closed-mindedness and refusal to debate.
Those who seek to prevent 2010 from becoming 1984 will want to arm
themselves with this valuable book.”
—Peter Dale Scott, professor emeritus of English, University of
California, Berkeley, and author of Drugs, Oil, and War

“David Ray Griffin is the preeminent expert on the events of
September 11, 2001; his research is consistently careful, thorough,
and objective. His previous books are necessary reading for all
Americans, and there is no doubt that thousands of Americans in
government circles have read them, studied them, and, in some cases,
worried about them. In Cognitive Infiltration, Griffin impartially
dissects Harvard Constitutional Law Professor Cass Sunstein’s
controversial essay, co-written by conservative law professor Adrian
Vermeule, entitled ‘Conspiracy Theories: Causes and Cures.’
Surprisingly, given the sensitivity and potential divisiveness of the
topic, Griffin has produced a fair, generously fact-filled, often
funny, assessment. Additional interest is provided by the suggestion
that Sunstein—far from being an enemy of both the Constitution and
the 9/11 Truth Movement—may in fact be a secret supporter and a
potential bridge- builder from the current government fictions
regarding 9/11 to an improved national consensus about what really
happened.”
—Karen Kwiatkowski, Ph.D., USAF Lt Colonel (retired), member of
Veterans for 9/11 Truth

The Nazis who posed as intellectual heavyweights read National Inquirer-type literature as they decided on death camps: Anti-intellectualism in America

George W. Bush liked to spout off and boast about how he did not like to read the newspaper or even read at all. Sarah Palin could not tell a piece of literature from a Facebook blog. Yet they all pretend that they somehow have received or earned some intellectual status as they banter about regarding race, culture, economics, war, and society. Glenn Beck, for example, tells his audiences how well read he is when it comes to the ‘founding fathers’ of which he picks and chooses the sections that will help him distort historical reality. Well, the news is these anti-intellectual, check-out at the register magazine frauds are not alone in both their disdain for intellectualism and their own heightened embrace of ant-intellectualism under the guise of wisdom and sagacious policy proposals.

A new book published this week in Germany exposes the ‘literary-lite’ reading tastes of Hitler and his cronies during the Third Reich (Allan Hall In Berlin, Revealed: The lightweight reading choices of leading Nazis who loved to pose as intellectuals, September 6, 2010. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1309468/Revealed-The-lightweight-reading-choices-leading-Nazis-loved-pose-intellectuals.html##ixzz0ymPEvaBH). The book notes that the Third Reich criminals really liked to read pop-corn novels and had no clue about intellectualism or historical and contemporary reality. Take Hermann Goering, the fat architect of the Blitz on London. According to the new book, he feasted on detective novels and sci-fi books by Jules Verne. His Fuehrer, however, was a devotee of the works of Karl May, a writer of western pulp fiction books centered on a gunslinger called Old Shatterhand and his Tonto-esque sidekick Winnetou. Heinrich Himmler, the lord of the S.S. behind the murder of the Jews, also liked Jules Verne and Alexander Dumas, particularly ‘The Man in the Iron Mask.’ He also read a lot about breeding German Shepherd dogs.

Academic Christian Adam, who researched the reading habits of the elite of the regime for his book entitled ‘Reading under Hitler; Authors, Best-sellers and Readers in the Third Reich,’ said the need for escapist literature increased as the war went on. Of course it did, for the brutal reality could hardly be even spoken of let alone allowed to come to consciousness and when it did it could hardly be stomached. According to Adam:

“….the demand for shallow material increased, escapism proving more valuable than ever before as the war went on” (ibid).

But as Adam notes in his new book, the mood of the fascist leadership was reflected not just in the simplistic reading lists of the murderous Third Reich’s reading collections, but was mirrored in the people and the subjective colonization of their minds as well. Although obliged to buy Hitler’s tedious autobiography Mein Kampf and turgid works on race by the Reich philosopher Alfred Rosenberg, the hoi poloi in Germany at the time also sought solace in the mindless fiction of the day. How could one cope with mass murder if they chose not to resist?

We see the same thing today in the United States, but not just among the right wing Christian fascists who constrain their reading material to Timothy LeHay, but we also see it within a population so dummied down, so ill-informed and so blistered by anomie and apathy that many people now can rarely be seen without clutching a People’s Magazine (or the more salacious and sexist Women Magazine)or the most recent edition of James Patterson’s or Patricia Cromwell’s detective novels. Take any flight from any airport in the US and you will find the majority of passengers clutching the same manufactured corporate weapons of mass distraction that allowed Hitler, his regime and many people to turn the other way when confronted with the truth about their society and the killing machines they employed and condoned.

Reality TV is the US Bread and Circus now. As the ravages of capitalism ratchet up to redefine culture, reality, dreams, aspirations, hope and resistance, the culture of idiocy now likens itself to Germany under Hitler, but this time on steroids. For with corporate media, propaganda has now found a contemporary and powerful visual cannon that manufactures consent and manages perceptions 24/7. Couple this with the increased use of psychotropic drugs, hand-held toys like cell-phones, and on-line life and the prescription is deadly.

The lists of the Nazi hierarchy’s preferred reading material were found by Adam in archives in Koblenz and Munich, Germany. According to Adam, often the movement’s leaders ordered up hundreds of educational and historical books, only for their aides to chronicle how they only ever saw ‘entertainments’ stacked in their studies or on their bedside tables. These fascists never read literature, nor were they the intellectuals they told their public they were. They were common killers who liked a bowl of popcorn and a good ‘don’t have to think’ novel before they turned out the lights, both on the evening and the lives of millions of people.

We can only imagine what ‘books’ or other literature, if there is any, occupy a prominent place on the nightstands of the Glenn Becks, the Sean O’Hannity’s and the Sarah Palins. We do know that Bill O’Reilly loves to write about ‘crack kids’ and sexual escapades between pimps and young 13 year old girls. Scooter Libby, the formidable ‘good German’ and fall guy for the Bush regime, loved to write novels about pederasty and bestiality — little girls having sex with bears. I kid you not.

These are the same people that tell us they should take power in the name of the Lord. Their Lord. They are also the same people, who no matter what they read, are mere puppets and trollips for the real ruling class, the class that pays them. The intellectual heavyweights promoted by the corporate media and fraudulently pawned off on the American public while reaping billions as sophists belie the fact they prefer one-handed fiction to anything having a resemblance to literature.

An anti-intellectual dummied down society is dialectically connected to an anti-intellectual dummied down culture and nowhere can this best be found than in a glimpse of the ‘fiction and Newszak’ the new Christian fascists read and the seamy magazines, mostly women magazines read by the general public. The anti-intellectual parallels of America to Germany and the Third Reich should give cause for concern. But don’t tell that to Oprah or the purveyors of celebrity coverage magazines, the sexist women magazines and romance novels.

It seems that thinking is hard work, which is why so many would rather not do it.
