If Rick Jeffrey, shown here, races his screaming yellow ’67 Z28 at The Glen this year, he might have a lot of new company.

August 8, 2017, brought forth Sportscar Vintage Racing Association’sannouncement CEO Tony Parella, through Parella Motorsports Holdings, acquired a controlling interest in Trans Am Series Racing and The Trans Am Race Company. Deeply rooted in contemporary American racing history, Trans Am brought American pony and muscle cars to race tracks around the country over 50 years ago. TransAm & SVRA make a perfect fit since SVRA is the country’s sole nationally based vintage racing organization.

Just in time for SVRA’s 2017 US Vintage Grand Prix at Watkins Glen International Raceway, September 7-10, witness SVRA’s Trans Am transition from their more traditional Historic Trans Am single group format to 4, count ‘em 4, Trans Am classes including Trans Am, Trans Am2, Trans Am 3 and Trans Am 4. SVRA’s 2016 HTA September 9 qualifying race, lists 24 competitors. 2017’s TA class entrant list features no less than 83 competitors. If they all race, The Glen’s 3.4 miles of 2+-year-old track surface will be very busy.

Nearly every US-based manufacturer entered Trans Am series racing as a great way to place high-performance hardware in front of dreamy-eyed American (mostly male) youth from 1967 on. Fast-forwarding to 2017, entrant lists include these same racing legends but add 2 Viper ACRXs, 2 Cadillac CTSXs & a CTSV, a Vantage GT-4, 2 Porsche 997s, and a BMW M3. Trans Am is alive and not just growing but thriving under Tony Parella’s leadership. Visit gotransam.com for their latest developments.

My first Watkins Glen race ran under a then relatively new Trans Am banner way back in 1971. My friends and I witnessed Mark Donohue’s AMC Javelin lead Ford & Chevy around the track by serious car lengths. Can’t wait to see Trans Am’s new life wring that history from The Glen. Daily Derbi will be there. I hope you will be too! See you at the track.

The 2015 Detroit Auto Show was full of exciting, groundbreaking, and generally epic new rides. For truck lovers, 2015 was an especially good year. The next generation Toyota Tacoma, the 2017 Ford Raptor, and the entry of a new diesel by way of the Nissan Titan XD. Ram brought a new trim level to 1500 with the Ram Rebel, because they didn’t have enough oddball trim options in the 1970′s. I’ve always liked Dodge trucks, I’ve had several, but I think there were more trim options for the Dodge D and W series trucks than there were episodes of The Brady Bunch. Warlocks, Little Red Express’s, Top Hand’s, and my personal favorite, the Power Wagon. The list goes on and on.

The 2017 Ford Raptor and the Ram Rebel really caught my attention. Not because they are anything extra special but because you’d have to be legally blind to miss them. I’m still stewing over how this happened but both the Ram Rebel and Ford Raptor have massive letters on their tailgates and grilles. Perhaps it’s one design team playing the other. I can just see the Ford guys laughing over their morning coffee. “Let’s slap ridiculously large letters on the tailgate of our latest concept and see who copies us!” The Ram on the Rebel’s front grille is acceptable but Ford’s letters are almost as big as the headlights themselves. You certainly won’t question what cleans your clock when you j-walk in front of the next-gen Raptor.

Jeremy Clarkson has made a living out of making fun of automobiles, especially American ones. They hate our cheesy pinstripes and over-the-top styling. This new crop of trucks takes the cake. You could be legally blind and still read the text on the back of these two trucks from a mile away. The worst part is, that the trend is already making its way to the tip trim levels of the Ram. That Laramie’s will be plastered with the giant Ram text while the grilles will receive gaping nostrils, creating what looks like an X. Maybe Ram will be the official vehicle of “X-Men, Day’s of trim gone bad”.

Whoever came up with these fabulous trim additions will likely go down in history with the greats who designed the likes of the AMC Gremlin, Lincoln Blackwood, and Chevy SSR. I think I might start my own business and specialize in shaving emblems. The market is looking good.

Back when I first graduated from college, I bought a 2001 MX-5 to celebrate my leaving of classrooms behind forever. It was a wonderful car and lived up to every bit of hype that has since made the Miata the so-called “answer to everything”. But just like every other Miata that came before it, the power of the car left quite a lot to be desired.

So off to the forums I went to find the best recommendations for easy mods to give my car that extra bit of oomph I so desperately wanted.* One of the first and most repeated recommendations was a cold air intake (CAI) to replace the stock air box and filter. CAIs are of course available from almost every aftermarket parts manufacturer, some reasonably priced and some that would break the bank.

The concept is simple: taking your stock airbox and traditional air filter out of the car and replacing it with a higher flow cone (or pod) filter that is positioned every so slightly closer to the outskirts of your engine bay will promote a more consistent draw of colder air into the engine. Cold air of course is more dense than warmer air, bringing in more oxygen molecules to the combustion process in the engine and resulting in a more powerful explosion of compressed fuel and air.

Sounds great, right? After all, handfuls of forum dwellers claimed that CAIs added 15+ hp to their Miatas. But 15 more ponies was nearly a 10% increase power… I was skeptical. If this easy upgrade to the car had such a positive impact, why didn’t the manufacturer do it in the first place? Was the power gain actually real or just a desired mental outcome? Where was the proof?

To me, it seemed that moving an air intake a few inches to the side and taking it out of a sectioned off airbox would only give it access to warmer ambient air in the engine bay, which would have the opposite effect of cold air.

Apparently I wasn’t alone. Lots of debate surrounded the claims as to the effectiveness of the CAI, and despite some modders showing their before and after dyno results, I still wanted more proof. Luckily the veteran modders and pro mechanics behind the “Mighty Car Mods” YouTube channel had the same question on their minds and decided to settle things once and for all with several dyno runs of an R34 Skyline featuring different airbox setups. The video is below, which is very well done, but if you don’t want to watch the whole thing, scroll down to see the results.

In the end, each set up of a CAI resulted in less power than the simple stock airbox with the stock filter. Only when the CAI was literally placed outside of the engine was there a very small gain in power. It’s hard to argue with the dyno numbers, which offer definitive proof that the perceived power gains and my 15 extra horsepower for my Miata were too good to be true.

In short, if you want a better noise when you put your foot down and a better looking engine bay, get a CAI. But if you want phenomenal power gains with a bolt-on mod, however, it’s best to leave the CAI option out of the picture.

*Years later, my opinion is that no bolt-on mod is really that effective. There is no replacement for displacement or adding a forced induction.

Just a few short months ago Ford unveiled the 2015 Mustang for all eyes to see. It was met with a wide variety of critique ranging from loving it to hate it. The unveiling came in the shadow of the 50th anniversary celebrations happening next month in Las Vegas. I didn’t expect to see one until they were on sale and on the road. Living in Utah typically means not seeing the new stuff until someone has bought one. Little did I know that I would see one sooner.

I was on my way home this evening with my wife and I looked over and I saw a car on a tow truck next to a gas station. At first, I thought nothing of it but then it dawned on me what I was looking at! We quickly pulled over and I pulled out my phone and snapped some pics. It is a very good-looking car. It looks MUCH better in person than it does in photos, especially in that red paint. The paint just explodes off the car in sunset light revealing some nice orange flake. We went home and I grabbed my real camera and went back. It was still there.

My favorite detail on the car is the taillights. They are so angular and chiseled. While admiring them I noticed an interesting detail on this car. Look at the photo above, see that “convertible” emblem? That’s odd… The car is a coupe. So why the convertible emblem? Either there is more to this car than meets the eye, somebody goofed, or Ford needed a rear panel quick and that is what they had.

<img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-2137 size-full" src="https://dailyderbi.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/IMG_3025-530x331-1.jpg" alt="Look What We Found!
This particular car is also a GT, meaning it has a 5.0 V8 with somewhere between 420-450hp. Since the car was first unveiled there have been no new details revealed. Expect to see some at next month’s anniversary festivities. In the meantime, enjoy some Mustang porn below.

<img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-2140 size-full" src="https://dailyderbi.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/IMG_3063-530x331-1.jpg" alt="Look What We Found!
The last photo is of my 1991 GT next to it. They have come a long ways in the last 23 years alone not to mention 50!

<img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-2139 size-full" src="https://dailyderbi.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/IMG_3068-530x331-1.jpg" alt="Look What We Found!
**Update** It turns out that this car is on it’s way to a commercial shoot in Payson, UT.

Earlier this month, executives from Calty Design Research caused quite a stir at the North American Auto Show in Detroit with their Toyota FT-1 concept car. While the FT-1′s curving, “function-sculpted” exterior recalls earlier Toyota sports coupes such as the 2000GT, Celica, Supra, MR2, and Scion FR-S, the concept is unmistakably forward-looking. The FT-1 — short for “Future Toyota” — incorporates such futuristic elements as a transparent hood and an extendable rear spoiler wing, and yet it still looks like something you could enjoy driving in the here and now.

Calty has been mum on the technical specifications, but the car was intended for the track and was designed according to the principle of “Waku-Doki,” which translates as “a palpable heart-pounding sense of excitement,” so it’s safe to assume the specs are impressive. We do know it’s a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, and that there’s a lot of technology under that glass hood.

My own personal tastes run more toward the big dinosaurs from Detroit’s golden age, but even I have to confess that this is a pretty sexy machine, at least from some angles. As with so many modern cars, the rear end has too much flat vertical space to my eye, like a big billboard waiting for an ad. (The current Corvette styling suffers from this as well.) The nose-on view is better, with the deep ducting and slight “beak” giving it a predatory look. But I especially like the profile, which is all classic sportster.

In an unusual but somehow very modern move, Calty worked with Polyphony Digital, the developers of the popular line of Gran Turismo driving simulator games, to develop a virtual FT-1, which was then used as a tool to pitch the concept to Toyota management. Executives were offered a chance to put the computer-generated version of the FT-1 through its paces on a virtual rendering of Fuji Speedway. Akio Toyoda, the president and CEO of the company, as well as an accomplished race driver, reportedly finished his virtual lap with a better time than his real-life best. Impressed, he gave his approval for construction of a physical model. Seems kind of weird to this writer — I’m not a gamer — but hey, whatever works, right?

Incidentally, if you’re a Gran Turismo player, you can give the car a spin as well; the FT-1 is now available as a downloadable vehicle for GT 6.

My wife’s A3 has reached the point where it become the cause of my lack of sleep. It’s not that anything catastrophic has happened to the car, but at 91,000 miles, zee German engineering is just beckoning to have something go wrong with it.

So, the best way to beat it is to stay one step ahead of it, right?

At 65 mph I began to hear a consistent buzz coming from the front driver-side wheel, which would get louder with speed and became especially pronounced when turning right (more weight being shifted to the driver’s side of the car), clearly indicating a bad wheel bearing.

Wheel bearing replacement is pretty standard preventative maintenance, but if you don’t know what you’re doing or don’t have a guide, it can be a somewhat intimidating process. Double that intimidation when you’re working with a car from zee motherland where the manufacturer decides it’s a good idea to use a new bolt pattern at every turn.

So to avoid the pain of going to Autozone or Lowes for the right socket again and again, here is a complete guide on how to replace an Audi A3 wheel hub.

Tools Needed

Breaker bar (1/2 drive)

Socket wrench (3/8 drive)

Rubber mallet

Socket extensions. I used a 2-inch and an 8 inch

24mm 12-side socket and/or 26mm 6-side socket*

1/2 to 3/8 socket drive adapter

12mm (M12) triple square driver

T30 Torx bit

21 mm wrench (or socket)

C-clamp

Pliers

Flathead screwdriver

PB Blaster (or other penetrating sprays)

Eye protection, gloves

Jack, jack stands

Metal coat hanger wire

*For whatever reason, my A3 had two different axle bolts that needed removal: a 24mm 12-side socket on the passenger side and 26mm 6-side socket on the driver side.

Step-By-Step

1. Start by popping off the Audi logo in the center of the wheel to get access to the axle bolt. You’ll need to loosen this initially before doing anything else. To break the bolt, use the breaker bar with either the 24mm 12-side socket or the 26mm 6-side socket depending on which size your car is using. After you’ve loosened the axle bolt, take it all of the way out then pull off the decorative lug nut covers using pliers. It’s important to break the bolt while the car is on the ground. Otherwise, you’ll be torquing your tranny while trying to break the bolt if you skip this step and do it after the car is lifted. Once the bolt is broken, loosen your lug nuts too.

The A3 axle bolt after removing the Audi emblem center cap.

2. Lift the car on both sides, even if you’re just changing one side’s wheel hub. The ability to easily turn your wheels in the air will be super helpful later. Make sure you use jack stands and don’t just leave it on a jack. Take your tires off.

3. Remove the brake calipers/brackets. Both can be removed at once by loosening the 21mm bracket bolts. I used a closed 21mm wrench, but a socket would work here as well. Some PB Blaster may be needed to help break the bolts.

When removing the calipers from the rotor, my rotor had a small lip on the outside that prevented me from simply slipping the caliper off. To get around this I first popped the hood and took the cap of my brake’s master cylinder (absolutely make sure you do this first). I then took my flathead screwdriver, worked it into the caliper, and then pried the caliper open ever so slightly, just enough to allow it to slip off the rotor and clear the lip with ease.

4. Once you have the caliper off, it’s time to hang it up and out of the way. I used a little bit of metal coat wire hanger to form a makeshift hanger that wrapped around the top of the spring coil to hang the caliper. Make sure the brake line isn’t bent awkwardly or pinched in any way. Once you have the caliper hung out of the way, use the C-clamp on it to prevent the caliper from compressing while you’re working. Just lightly place the C-clamp on the caliper- there’s no need to compress the caliper any further than what you already did with the screwdriver in the step before. The C-clamp is purely a preventative measure.

5. Remove the T30 Torx bolt from the rotor. After the bolt is removed you can take off the rotor. My rotor took a lot of persuasion from my rubber mallet before cooperating. Eventually, after hitting the rotor from behind, putting the car in neutral, and rotating it around to hit the other side, it came off.

6. After the rotor is off, remove the dust shield by unscrewing the three simple T30 Torx screws holding it in place. Behind the dust shield is the brake sensor connector. Unclip that by using a small flathead screwdriver and popping up the snap tab as the base (see photo below). Now, the full outgoing hub and bearing are exposed.

The old wheel hub is completely exposed.

7. From here there are four triple square bolts on the backside of the hub that holds the hub in place. After taking off the dust shield you can look around the back and see them. You’ll need to break the bolts and take each one out before being able to take off the hub. This is where things get a bit tricky. To get to the point where you can access these bolts, you’ll need to push the axle out of the hub as far as you can.

Start by taking your socket extension and gently tapping the center of the axle. You can see and feel it slide backward with just a little bit of pressure. The axle will not come all the way out of the hub, so don’t go hammering it out as hard as you can. You should be able to get about 1.5-2 inches of slide out of the axle. Again, this extra space makes these four triple square bolts accessible.

The left image shows the axle all the way. On the right, it shows the axle after being tapped back.

8. Once you’ve tapped the axle back, it’s time to work on the four triple square screws. Because we started by putting the car on jack stands, it makes this part much, much easier. To start, turn the wheel full lock to the right to expose the front end of the wheel hub and give you a lot of extra room to work on these bolts. It takes some creative wedging of the M12 Triple Square driver you have, but eventually, you’ll get it. I had to use a breaker bar with my 3/8 adapter and extension to finally break each bolt. Apply PB Blaster liberally!!

After getting the first two bolts out, turn the wheel full lock left and repeat the bolt-breaking process again!

What the little triple square bolt bastards look like once they’re out!

9. After all of the bolts are removed, it’s time to take out the old hub and replace it with the new one. The old hubs are a super pain to get out of. First, apply TONS of PB Blaster all around the hub. After letting it sit for a moment, take your rubber mallet and begin the long process of loosening and slowly hitting out the old hub by hitting it from behind in multiple places. It will eventually come out after some angry pounds from your mallet and a few swear words.

Once the old hub is out, put the new one in, follow these directions in reverse, and enjoy a buzz-free car.

Let me paint you a ridiculous picture. You’re driving down the highway and the throttle gets stuck wide open. You can’t stop, so you drive full throttle for an hour until you run out of gas.

Hard to believe? It gets crazier.

French citizen, Frank Lecerf, was driving his Renault Laguna to the store. Not just any old Renault, but one that had been modified for the disabled. It had keyless ignition, and sacrificed pedals in lieu of electronic, steering wheel-based controls.

Something happened. The throttle stuck. His attempts to brake resulted in acceleration. Soon enough, Frank has the throttle pegged at 125 MPH, with no way to stop. Needless to say, he missed his exit.

During his freeway cruise, he managed to have a phone conversation with both the police and Renault, pass safely through 3 toll booths, receive a police escort, and end up in Belgium.

After all this excitement at 125mph, his car ran out of gas, and he coasted to a stop…upside down in a ditch. Then he had 2 seizures.

How unlucky would you feel, knowing navigated the freeway for an hour straight at 125mph, but couldn’t avoid the ditch after running out of gas?

As a public service, we’ve decided to provide instructions in case you get caught in this sticky situation.

How to Stop During Unintended Acceleration

In the unlikely event of unintended acceleration, here’s what you should do to stop the car.

1. Immediately put the car into neutral. The car cannot accelerate while in neutral, so get it there ASAP. Neutral is also easily accessible no matter which type of transmission you have.

2. Apply brakes. If you apply brakes while the engine is still driving the wheels, you will burn them out. Assuming the brakes are working, bring the car to a stop gently, if possible.

3. Turn the car off. Easy enough to turn the key to off (but don’t remove the key from the ignition as that will cause the steering wheel to lock). While the engine is off, you can’t continue to accelerate. Remember that your power brakes won’t work with the engine off, so attempt braking before turning the car off.

4. Emergency brake – They don’t call ‘em that for nothing. Emergency brakes apply pressure to the rear wheels. This isn’t as effective for stopping, but it’s an effective way to scrub speed if your front brakes have bitten the dust. Do slowly unless you want to do pirouettes/flips down the roadway.

5. If all else fails, open all the doors, and pop the trunk. It may not produce a strong enough air dam to bring the vehicle to a stop, but you’ll really make the detectives scratch their heads while they’re trying to figure out the scene of the accident.

Any tips for unintended acceleration we may have missed? Let us know in the comments!

How do you make an already sexy car sexier? Simple! Take the top off! The long-awaited Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 Roadster is finally here! It features all the same things as the “normal” version but adds that wind-in-your-hair, toupee launching pleasure of going 217mph without a roof. The glorious sounding 6.5 liters, 700 raging bull power V12 is now ready for open-top, tunnel blasting for your satisfaction.

The new two-piece roof is made of carbon fiber and is practically weightless at 13 lbs. In a true Raging Bull manner, the roof must be removed by hand and stored in a compartment in the front storage compartment. It is said to be easy to install. Of course, Lamborghini said the same thing about Murcielago’s tent-of-a-top…

Like any convertible version, the chassis gets some strengthening which of course adds weight. To counter the added fat, Lamborghini gave the car new wheels which weigh 22 lbs less than the originals. So, hold on to your hats, whigs, and toupees while driving on the track. You might also want to prepare for your wallet to feel considerably lighter as it is expected to cost around $381,000 before additional goodies.

UPDATE: A video has surfaced showing just how easy the roof is installed. Simply snap them in place!

I’ve always considered myself to be a little nostalgic, especially with cars. The longer I own a car, the harder it is for me to part with it. There have been a few I’ve had a particularly hard time parting with. The ’76 Toyota Corona I learned to drive in, an ’89 Dodge Ramcharger that made East Idaho winters enjoyable, and my ’93 Nissan Maxima that still holds the record for the most exorbitant speeding ticket issued on Main Street, Rexburg.

For Mr. Allen Swift of Springfield, Massachusetts, parting with his beloved set of wheels just wasn’t in the cards. Allen Swift graduated from high school in 1928 and since a red Mustang convertible wouldn’t be available for another 36 years, his undoubtedly well-heeled father presented him with a brand new, 1928 Rolls-Royce Piccadilly-P1 Roadster. A graduation gift of Rolls-Royce caliber definitely warrants an extended period of ownership. Mr. Swift owned him for 82 years.

There have been plenty of people who have owned a single car for nearly a lifetime, even if it wasn’t for 82 years and a select few have even racked up astronomical odometer revolutions. Ever heard of Million Mile Joe and his 1990 Honda Accord? Well, no offense Joe, but you can’t touch Allen Swift’s Rolls. Not only did he own the car until his death last year (he was 102) but he also drove it… daily. How many miles can you rack up over 82 years of daily driven ownership? How about 1,070,000. Million Mile Joe may have achieved his million mile goal but his car isn’t as old as Mickey Mouse and it’s a Honda.

Swift’s Piccadily-P1 Roadster was donated to a Springfield museum after his death and is said to still run like a Swiss watch, silent at any speed, and is in perfect cosmetic condition.

The last time I saw the Mormon Meteor III in person, the famed Bonneville salt-flats record-setter had a constellation of dried spitwads splattered across her canopy and a crushed wax-paper Coke cup sticking out of one of her 12 side-mounted exhaust pipes. This was in the early ’90s, back when this hand-built, one-of-a-kind speedster was on display at the Utah State Capitol building, where she’d been sitting for decades with no security, no surveillance cameras, nothing to keep the grubby hands of field-tripping school kids off of her except a dusty velvet rope. It was a pitiable sight… and an embarrassment to the State of Utah, which had been entrusted with the care of this treasure and had thoroughly botched the job.

That all ended in 1996 when Marvin Jenkins, son of the Meteor III‘s legendary builder and driver Ab Jenkins, reclaimed his birthright and began a years-long restoration of his father’s car. Sadly, Marv didn’t live to see the work completed. But today the Meteor III looks as ready to roll as she did the day Ab Jenkins and Augie Duesenberg finished her in 1938. She’s prominently featured in “Speed: The Art of the Performance Automobile,” a collection of 19 historic, rare, and just plain cool vintage cars currently on exhibition at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA) at the University of Utah campus. Many of the cars in the exhibit are one-of-a-kinds or one of only a handful of examples known to still exist. From the 1904 Peerless Green Dragon up through Carroll Shelby’s 1964 Cobra Daytona Coupe, the exhibition handily illustrates the evolution of high-performance motoring through the 20th century.

The more memorable entries for me included a stunningly restored 1916 Stutz Bearcat (seen above), once one of the fastest production cars in the world; the aforementioned Green Dragon and Shelby Cobra Daytona (seen below); and a silver 1954 Ferrari once owned by film director Roberto Rossellini, husband of movie star Ingrid Bergman and father of Isabella Rossellini.

But it was the seven Bonneville racers in the museum’s main gallery that really got my heart pumping. Spanning the decades from the early 1930s through the ’70s, these unique machines celebrate the ingenuity of lone tinkerers and small teams working for the love and challenge of driving really fast.

“Speed: The Art of the Performance Automobile” will only be open for the next two weeks; it closes on September 16. So if you’re looking for something interesting to do, don’t hesitate…

Ford unveiled the Galaxie in 1959 as an answer to its rival Chevy’s Impala, which had debuted the previous year. With a name inspired by the U.S.-Soviet Space Race, the Galaxie was available in two-door, four-door, and ragtop configurations, with a variety of engine and transmission options. The nomenclature gets a bit confusing starting in 1962 when the Galaxie name was applied to all of Ford’s full-size cars, including hardtop, sedan, station wagon and convertible models. The terms “500″ and “500/XL” were added to denote higher trim packages, with the 500/XL being touted as “extra luxury” and “extra lively.” In time, there would also be a 500/LTD designation, which would eventually morph into a separate line, the Ford LTD, and continue on through the ’70s as ever-larger and cushier transport barges favored mostly by retirees and pimps. Meanwhile, the last Galaxie rolled into showrooms in 1974.

As unlikely as it may seem given their size and generally tame appearance, Galaxies are sometimes considered a forerunner of the classic American muscle car, due to the lightweight, racing-spec versions built for the NASCAR competitions of the day. The racing Galaxies inspired a new variant for 1963, the SportsRoof (sometimes called the Fastback). Coming out in the middle of the production year, the SportsRoof Galaxies were the industry’s first official “half-year” model, and they’re very sought after by collectors today.

But it’s ragtops that have always seduced me. I’ve owned the Galaxie pictured here since I was 17 years old (full disclosure: I’m nearly 43 now). Sporting a Thunderbird 390 engine rated at 300 horsepower and fueled by a four-barrel carb, the old girl is no slouch when you drop the hammer, but with just an automatic transmission and a ride like oil over glass, she’s really not intended for burning up the pavement. Instead, this is the perfect summer touring machine, meant for leisurely cruises along scenic byways, and I’ve run up plenty of miles on her doing just that. This car is actually an amalgamation of three separate Galaxies, joined together during a backyard restoration by my dad and his brother in 1987. The interior layout is Thunderbird-style bucket seats with a center console, rather than the full bench seat seen in many Galaxies, upholstered in classic tuck-and-roll. As for those Lincoln hubcaps, well, they’re what Dad had on hand as we were finishing up the restoration, and they were only supposed to be temporary until we could find something more authentic. But I got used to them…

There are plenty of unique one-off vehicles that pop up and grab our attention pretty much on a daily basis nowadays. The recently announced Masonry-turned Carbonado Aventador is a perfect example of what a tuning company with plenty of money and reputation as well as ungodly access to carbon fiber can do when they want to enter the one-off realm.

But what about those who don’t have the dollars to spend but still want something a bit off the beaten path? The answer came to me on a recent trip to Newport Beach at a mall parking lot that made anything back in Utah look like a valet’s parking area. Amid the floods of Bentleys, S-Classes, Panameras, and LFAs grabbing for attention pretty much everywhere, it was almost easy the miss the long, white VW Rabbit limo parked in the corner spot nearest to the mall’s main entrance. Yes, that’s right- a long, white Mk1 VW Rabbit limo.

From a purely aesthetic standpoint, the car was and still is absolutely unique and totally bonkers. The wheelbase looks massive against the small 13-inch wheels and the tiny hood space up front looks positively out of place against a body that has at least 50% more length than what was found on a normal, non-limo Mk1 VW Rabbit (there’s a sentence I never thought I would type).

Better yet, after a quick Google search for VW Rabbit limo that exact car popped up as the fourth result, which just happened to be a site to list your collector cars for sale. According to the ad, it is a 1979 model that seats 6, has a “mostly stock interior”, and- get this- is still powered by the original, unmodified 1.6L motor good for a whopping 76 German horses straight from the 70s. But with only 33,714 miles on the odometer, you still may land pretty close to the 76hp mark despite the car being a whopping 33 years old.

So, if you’re in the market for a crazy, attention-grabbing one-off and 0-60 in two days actually sounds appealing to you, it looks like this Rabbit limo is your answer. All it will take is the absurd $15,555 the owner is asking to make it yours. Yeah….maybe we’ll just keep saving for that Carbonado.

Let us know if you’d like to become the proud new owner in the poll below:

Pierce county Washington has been home to one of the worlds best kept secrets for years. This coming weekend that secret with be brought to glorious light. LeMay: America’s Car Museum will be opening its doors to the public for the first time this coming Saturday, June 2nd.

For those that have purchased tickets to what will be one of the biggest grand openings of 2012, Friday night, June 1st will start with three different parties. “The Great Gatsby” dinner party will be a black-tie event amidst cars of the 20′s… think big long Duesenberg’s. A sock hop with a fifties theme will be for those that want to swing dance amidst tri-5 Chevy’s and there will be a costume party for those that are fans of motor sport. Saturday and Sunday will host the first tours of the museum which will display historic electric and alternative fuel cars and of course there will be a massive car show out on the 3.5 acre field.

Designed after the hood of nothing less than a car, America’s Car Museum (ACM) sits across the street from the Tacoma Dome and just feet from an I-5 exit ramp. This 165,000 square foot masterpiece will house as many as 500 cars at a time… 500 cars of a collection that at one time amassed over 3,400 vehicles. Needless to stay that exhibits will be an ever changing experience. Home to state of art race car simulators, a restaurant, and even a drive-in theater, ACM is well equipped to spread what is America’s love affair with the automobile.

The museum has been named in honor of Harold LeMay, a man that lived the true American dream. A simpleton at heart, Harold started his own company in the early 1900′s, hauling away people’s trash on the back of his Model T pickup. Now, in the next century, nearly every garbage can on the street has Lemay scrawled across the side. Had I amassed a fortune hauling refuse as Harold did, I would have done the exact same thing – collect massive amounts of automobiles. The Harold LeMay collection holds a Guinness world record for the largest privately owned car collection, a collection that has been open to the public for years but not widely known.

Until now, the museum has been well hidden amidst the towering evergreens of western Washington. Housed in a a smattering of warehouses and old military buildings of the Marymount academy, the LeMay collection truly was a diamond in the rough.

As a volunteer for ACM, I’ll be manning the race simulator on Saturday and will bring footage of the car show and museum interior later in the week. Having visited the old museum several times, words cannot describe how impressive this collection is. Every car has a story, as the museum would say and I couldn’t agree more. With so many cars in the collection there are many stories to be told. All the more reason to return again and again to what should be on everyones to-do list and one of the worlds premier museums.

Plan your next vacation to the Great Northwest, go to a Mariners game, go deep sea fishing if you must, but make sure that you make it to LeMay: America’s Car Museum.

For the financially disabled auto enthusiast, bang for your buck is a must. Depending on what kind of four-wheeled fun you’re looking for, there are many categories of affordable cars that can pack a formidable punch. We’ve argued before that the E36 BMW M3 offers the best bang for your buck but a good friend of mine has recently turned me onto a fierce competitor, the C4 Corvette.

Of course, I realize that the BMW M3 and the Chevrolet Corvette aren’t exactly competitors. While the M3 can be had as a coupe, or a family mans four-door-fix, the Corvette is a cut and dry American sports car. Two seats strapped to a high powered pushrod V8 (generally), the Corvette is a much different beast than its Bavarian business class friend.

The Budget is $10,000 and for that you can get yourself a pretty clean example of either. For those chasing the ultimate driving machine, be prepared for higher miles for the money you’ll be spending. A good clean E36 M3 under 100,000 miles will likely be a few thousand dollars over 10k. The C4 Corvette on the other hand will have plenty of examples in that price range with as low as 60,000 miles. Sounds like a good bargain to me.

When shopping for the the C4, you better make sure you’ve studied up on your Corvette history. Sure, you can get a nice clean one owner with low miles for $10,000 or less but the C4 Corvette spanned over a decade. The early models were gutless wonders that will likely be the most worthless corvettes of all time. However, things got better for the C4 later in life as horsepower ratings rose, body styles were refined, and electronics were updated. The anemic L83 gave way to an improved L98 but the C4′s you want to find for the listed price of 10k will have the LT1 to LT4. The latter two will pack 300 to 330 horsepower and of course have OBD systems that are much easier to work with than the previous models.

You’ll be hard pressed to find an LT4 for anything less than $14,000 but you can get a solid 300 horsepower LT1 for $10,000 or less. Don’t bother looking for an LT5 ZR1 as those can still bring as much as $40,000. While the BMW will give you more seats and a cushier ride, the C4 Corvette will bring higher horsepower for your dollar and much lower miles as well. So if you don’t mind the difficult egress and ingress and the harsh ride, a late model C4 Corvette will satisfy your go fast needs for minimum cash.

To prove my point I’ve taken several examples out for a spin. The beautiful red C4 has a custom 17 coat paint job, Baer brakes, and several other performance goodies. This example is a 91′ with the L98, 70,000 miles and $9500. The white example is a more original LT1 with about the same mileage and the same price. With Nearly 60 horsepower more, the LT1 is the clear choice.

So if you don’t mind the rough as rocks ride and you don’t need the extra seats or trunk space, the C4 Corvette is the clear winner. Corvettes are known to be pretty reliable car, parts are easy to come by, and Corvette clubs are abundant. Not to mention, as far as classic cars are concerned, they are generally most affordable at 15 to 20 years old, so the C4 corvette is right in its sweet spot from an investment point of view. If you’re in the market, give some later model C4′s a good look over. It just might be worth it.

The video featured below should only be viewed by those with a strong stomach. The high flying antics of this fire engine red Pontiac GTO are filmed in slow motion and with hops like that, the landing is anything but soft.

It’s videos like these that give you a peek into Hollywood and why it’s so expensive to make movies. Producers aren’t generally satisfied with smashing out of production economy class sedans. Clearly, it’s more entertaining to watch a priceless piece of American history nose dive into the pavement from twenty feet in the air, or drive a rare exotic off of a balcony. Thankfully in most cases, the demolition cars are stripped out kit cars or doubles of the “hero” car and CG is playing a major role in saving sweet rides from the loony acts of movie makers. Unfortunately, this pretty little Pontiac wasn’t so lucky. Let us all hold a moment of silence.

The Nürburgring is widely regarded as the ultimate testing ground for cars and drivers alike. Needless to say, it’s often a breeding ground for excessive speed, overestimation of driving skills, and recklessness, all three of which came together today in an eight-car crash in the ‘Ring’s Bergwerk section. Included in the eight cars were a rented Corvette Z06 and the famous BMW M3 ‘Ring Taxi.

When all was said and done, seven of the eight cars were not drivable and one driver was sent to a local hospital in serious condition.

For pictures and a full story on how the accident unfolded, head over to Jalopnik

This weekend, Madison Snow clinched the 2011 IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge at the series’ stop at Laguna Seca. At first, this would sound like just another champion driver winning their series until you find out that Madison isn’t even old enough to legally drive. He’s 15.

So how does a kid who doesn’t own a driver’s license come to win one of the most intense race series in the world? First, the name Snow should sound familiar to those who follow motorsport. Madison is the son of Melanie Snow, a local veteran racer from Pleasant Grove who just got drafted into the first all-women driver-crew in ALMS history. His family has a history and we think it’s a safe bet to assume he’s living up to their speed-filled expectations.

Secondly, Madison was brought up behind the wheel of a kart. He is a product of numerous karting series at Miller Motorsports Park, which eventually lead to numerous sessions behind the wheel of a Mustang at the racetrack’s Ford High-Performance Racing School. Looks like he paid attention well because on Sunday Snow drove his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup over the finish line to clinch the title well before the end of the season thanks to a full 47-point lead over the series’ second-place driver. That’s not a win. That’s a landslide. He’s even got one more race at Road Atlanta, one that he says he’ll be able to “just have fun out there.”
