When we last updated to you on the ongoing Heads-up Challenge match between Phil Galfond and Chance Kornuth, Galfond had taken a lead of over $177,000. Since then, Galfond further extended his lead, before Kornuth made an impressive comeback over the last two sessions. And after Tuesday’s session, Kornuth now sees himself down a modest $117,000.

With the challenge on break until next Tuesday, and previous funding issues on WSOP.com delaying the match (Kornuth hit his deposit maximum after his initial struggles), only three sessions have been played since October 2nd.

Let’s take a look at how Kornuth has cut Galfond’s lead by more than 50%.

Check out previous Galfond Challenge reports:
Day 1-3
Day 4-8

Day 9

After Galfond’s strong session on Friday, October 2nd, the pair returned for a short session on October 3rd. Despite only 196 hands being played, the fewest hands played in a session so far, Galfond finished up by winning another $103,000 from Kornuth to put his overall lead at $280,000.

So why was the session cut short? Kornuth’s slow start was to blame. Although Kornuth has the bankroll to continue, another $103k loss meant that Kornuth had to refund his WSOP.com account. The only problem — he had hit his deposit limits on the poker room.

Hey @WSOPcom and @888poker, @PhilGalfond busted my account today and we now have to put the challenge on hold due to deposit limits… Can you plz fix this ASAP!!!! #forthefans

— Chance Kornuth (@ChancesCards) October 3, 2020

Mike “O8Grinder” filled in for Nathan Gamble during the session to join host Henry Kilbane for the stream. You can watch the 2-hour session below:

Day 10

After a few days of waiting for WSOP.com to rectify the deposit issue, Chance Kornuth was able to refund his account to time for a session on October 10th, where Galfond and Kornuth played 510 hands.

The break seemed to turn Kornuth’s fortune’s around as Kornuth bit into Galfond’s lead, winning $79,000 on the day, but still leaving Galfond up over $200,000 in the Challenge through Day 10.

Nathan Gamble returned to the booth with Henry Kilbane during the session for around 4 hours of play:

To watch a condensed version of the match, poker fans can watch highlights of the session below:

Day 11

With Day 10 held on a Saturday, it meant another small break for the Galfond/Kornuth Challenge until Tuesday, when the pair played another 540 hands.

The good vibes continued for Kornuth, as he won his second straight session and finished up the day with an $84,000 win, his best day thus far. The victory on the day meant that Kornuth had narrowed Galfond’s lead to $117k.

Thallo and Dylan Weisman took over the commentary duties on the day with the session that lasted over 5 hours.

Chance Kornuth joins The Rake to discuss The Galfond Challenge

Kornuth was the latest guest of The Rake, which he hosted by Marle Cordeiro and Jaime Kerstetter, where he discussed his match with Galfond as well as the upcoming heads-up match between Doug Polk and Daniel Negreanu:

Up next

Galfond and Kornuth took a break after the session on October 13th. They will return this Tuesday (October 20th) at 12:30 PM ET for their next session, which poker fans will likely continue to see some competitive poker and hopefully, no more deposit issues. Coverage will likely be streamed through the Henry Kilbane Twitch channel, although users can stay tuned to the Run It Once Twitter page for specific updates.

About the Mystery House

The Mystery House is a game board that is broken down in 28 squares with eight rooms.

To take a stroll through the Mystery House, players must first opt-in via the “Challenges Window,” located within the PokerStars client or app.

After enrolling, players will need to play on PokerStars to complete bars to be able to open PokerStars Chests — a standard offering through the PokerStars Rewards program. In addition to regular prizes, players will also get a dice roll — on a four sided die — which can be used to move on the Mystery House board that number of spaces.

If you land on a square with a door, you will get to collect a key and an instant prize. Once you have collected three keys, you will be able to receive a mystery prize, with the chance to earn up to $15,000.

Alternatively, instead of finding three keys, you can also qualify for a final mystery prize by making it to the end of the Mystery House (Box 28).

About the prizes

The value of the prize you earn when landing near a door will be based on the level of your Stars Rewards Chest, meaning that the higher level PokerStars players will have a greater chance of a larger bonus.

Bronze: $1.25

Silver: $4.00

Gold: $15.00

Diamond: $30.00

If you receive three keys or complete the Mystery Board, you will receive an even greater prize. The vast majority of receipients (99% or 999 in 1000) will receive the lower prize rewards with 0.1% or 1 in 1000 of playres receiving a much larger prize:

Blue: $5 (or $100)

Bronze: $7.50 (or $250)

Silver: $15 (or $500)

Many live poker rooms across the country remain closed due to the social distancing challenges of poker in 2020. Poker rooms have adapted to the new reality — hopefully temporary — with a variety of policies to meet city and state requirements and to keep its citizens safe.

JohnnieVibes plays at the Bellagio

In his most recent YouTube video, poker vlogger JohnnieVibes gave his viewers a first-hand look at what live poker is like when he played in-person for the first time since early February. In the vlog, he sat down for some 6-handed $5/$10 No Limit Holde’em at the Bellagio poker room in Las Vegas, where he chronicles his experience playing in this brave new world summarizing his visit by saying “Las Vegas is a shadow of its former self.”

Some of the changes he noticed included much less traffic, earlier close times, difficulty to find food and drink at certain hours. Also, at the restaurant he visited at Bellagio, he was required to wear a mask at all times, although he noted that not all restaurants are as strict.

After the waiting list of tables at the Bellagio was too long on a Sunday evening, he left to play in the morning, where he was able to join a game immediately. Much of the video covers the hands he encounters during his session, so if you prefer to watch a certain part of the video, check out the timestamps below.

0:00 – Intro
1:07 – Scenes from the Las Vegas
1:25 – Wake up in the morning after failing to find a game.
2:10 – Playing a morning session at the Bellagio.
8:25 – Session results
8:35 – Summary of experience along with pros and cons of playing live poker in a pandemic

JohnnieVibes was able to find some positives of the experience (such as having a dedicated space) but didn’t like wearing a mask for a prolonged amount of time and indicated that he will likely stick to playing online for most of his play for the time being.

What Las Vegas poker rooms are open?

Like many poker rooms in the world, Las Vegas poker effectively shut down in late March, while not beginning to reopen until mid-June. Initially, only four casinos opened with poker rooms, but that number has swelled to 18.

Golden Nugget, Orleans, South Point, and Venetian were the first to open their poker rooms. Now, poker rooms are also available at the Aria, Bally’s. Bellagio, Boulder Station, Caesars Palace, Flamingo, MGM Grand, Poker Palace, Red Rock Resort, Sahara, Sante Fe Station, Silver Sevens, Westgate and Wynn at Encore.

What are the requirements of Las Vegas poker rooms?

When you take a look at the local safety requirements, you can see why many casinos have chosen to focus on their casinos or slowly reopened their poker rooms.

Poker rooms are mandated by state law for only a certain number of tables based on space, which has led to shorter supply and longer wait times. Players are also required to wear masks within a casino, including in the poker room.

Although not required, some poker rooms such as The Bellagio, have gone further with their safety measures such as plexiglass dividers, which are on tables with six or more players. Like many businesses, gloves, wipes and hand sanitizer are also available for patrons.
