Christ Coming at Armageddon—Part 2

A Little Leaven

                    Tuesday, February 9, 2010

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth? This persuasion cometh not of him that calleth you. A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump."

Galatians 5:7-9

Even a little wrong influence can lead to devastating consequences.

A British newspaper was struggling financially. Readership was down, people were disinterested in the paper, and many newspapers in the business had already shut down. The editor-in-chief of the paper was a young, energetic man who had a passion for the newspaper. He often worked ninety hours a week, devoting his whole self to the advancement of the paper. When notified that his paper would soon be closed if revenues weren't increased, he brainstormed for a plan to stimulate interest in the paper. Not long later, he came up with a brilliant idea. The paper would hold a contest. The rules were this: the paper wanted readers to submit a story in which they came up with the definition of a "friend." The winner of the story would have their entry printed, their picture in the paper, and their definition submitted to a local publishing company to be included in a special edition of a dictionary. Although his idea was a long stretch, he counted on the fact that people would want to see their own picture in the paper, and would want their definition printed in the special edition dictionary.

His idea was a hit. The contest ran for three weeks, but in the first week alone hundreds of definitions were submitted. During the three weeks, readership increased by twenty percent, and newspapers were flying off the newsstands. Everyone wanted to see if his definition had been selected. At the end of three weeks, the newspaper narrowed the search down to these definitions:

"One who multiplies joys, divides grief, and whose honesty is inviolable."
"One who understands our silence."
"A volume of sympathy bound in cloth."
"A watch that beats true for all time and never runs down."

And the winning definition was "A friend is the one who comes in when the whole world has gone out."

While the newspaper's goal was to increase revenue, everyone who read the paper learned a great truth-friendship greatly impacts people. Simply from reading the entries, one can deduce that the writers had some personal experiences that affected their entries.

Friends play vital roles in our lives. Have you ever had a friend who knew just what to say in tough times, or perhaps they were a kind listener on whom you could always count? Never take for granted the influence of a friend.

Just as a friend can be a great influence for good, so a friend can influence for bad. Notice Paul's question to the Galatians, "Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?" The Galatians had begun listening to false prophets and soon they were being affected by their doctrine. As Paul went on to say, "A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump."

Your friends affect you either positively or negatively. In your Christian battle, your friends are either strengthening you to fight the devil or they are weakening your defense. Which one are your friends? Don't allow wayward friends to pull you down. God desires you to be friendly and kind to everyone, yet only allow godly Christians focused on doing right to be your close friends.

Do you have godly influences as friends? Re-evaluate whom you allow to be your close friends. If someone is not spiritually helping you, you need to break that friendship with him. Giving up that friendship may be painful, but allowing them to adversely influence you will lead to greater consequences.

If you have a godly friend who encourages you to do right, thank them! Let them know of your gratitude for how they help you, and determine to be a godly encourager to them as well. Make sure your friends are headed in the same spiritual direction as you.

Stand Fast

                    Monday, February 8, 2010

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage."

Galatians 5:1

Battling the devil is difficult, yet defeat is not an option.

The 1860 election in the United States carried more weight than a usual election. Several issues divided Americans during this time in history-states' rights, land grants and usage, and slavery. Less than one hundred years old, the U.S. had spent the first one hundred years of its existence hashing out documents and laws to govern the land. While many laws were contested, both sides had often agreed upon a compromise. Yet the issues listed above had finally come to a head. On one side stood those opposed to both expanding slavery and granting more control to the states. On the other side stood those favoring the continued practice of slavery and the localizing of government. Abraham Lincoln, representing the first side, ran for the Presidency in 1860 and upon his election, eleven Southern states seceded from the Union. Recognizing this act as rebellion, a civil war was declared between the two sides and fighting ensued on April 12, 1861.

Throughout the war, stories are told of common farmers and tradesmen choosing to stand for their beliefs and fighting against their enemies. The battles were fierce, supplies few, yet people were fighting for ideals, and their ideals motivated them to give all they had. One such story is told of a young Southern soldier who was badly wounded in battle by a cannonball. As he was carried off the battlefield in the midst of the fighting, he instructed the medical staff to quickly bandage him so he could continue the fight. Advising against it, they sought help from the commanding officer in convincing the young man to stay in the field hospital. The officer arrived and upon seeing him stated, "Son, you've fought well, but with a missing eye, badly handicapped arm, and lacerated body, you need to stay here at the rear of the battle." The soldier said through tears, "Sir, I respect you, but I'm going to continue fighting. This battle has no rear!"

This young soldier, probably not more than twenty-five years old understood the concept of standing fast, of fighting even when the battle was tough. He was physically hurting, pained, and broken; yet despite what the battle had cost him, he kept fighting.

Your Christian battle is just as real as this soldier's battle. You may not physically wield a weapon, but the fight is ever present. Any Christian who's lived for a period of time can tell you stories of the devil's attacks, temptations, and battles. Some battles are won; some are lost. Many will suffer pains; some will suffer loss; yet God's command in the heat of battle is seen in Galatians 5, "Stand fast."

Every day the devil sends his best combat fighters against you. He strategizes how to best cause you to fall. He tempts you in your areas of weakness. The devil knows you better than most people. You've probably experienced failure, lost battles to his temptations, and fallen in the fight. Yet God's command rings true, "Stand fast."

Whenever you lose a battle remember that the war is already won. Rather than giving up, stand up and continue fighting. Don't let the devil convince you fighting is futile. Yes, you will fall, and you will experience pain, but stand fast.

If you're saved, you no longer have to give in to sin. Satan has no power over your life any more. You are God's child, and now fight on His side. Rejoice, for God has already won the war! Yet each day you will need to fight against the devil's attacks, resist his temptations, and refuse to give in to his devices.

How's the battle going in your life? Have you experienced setbacks? Have you suffered defeat? Don't let the devil win by giving in to him. Gain strength from God's Word, prayer, His church, godly music, godly friends, and the example of other godly fighters; and keep fighting. Remember, even when you fall, get back up, and continue to stand fast.

God's Family

                    Sunday, February 7, 2010

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ."

Galatians 4:3-7

God sacrificed His Son on the Cross so you could become part of His family.

The Human Development and Family Department of the University of Nebraska once surveyed several "successful" families-ones who had close relationships and enjoyed time together. From their research they compiled a profile of a close family:

-Appreciation. "Family members gave one another compliments and sincere demonstrations of approval. They tried to make the others feel appreciated and good about themselves."

-Ability to Deal with Crises in a Positive Manner. "They were willing to take a bad situation, see something positive in it, and focus on that."

-Time Together. "In all areas of their lives-meals, work, recreation-they structured their schedules to spend time together."

-Commitment. "Families promoted each person's happiness and welfare, invested time and energy in each other, and made family their number one priority."

-Communication. "These families spent time talking with each other. They also listened well, which shows respect."

Even before the University of Nebraska conducted their study, God's Word taught how to build strong families. A family that is based on God's Word and on a loving relationship with Him will prosper. Most importantly God has given us the opportunity and privilege to be accepted into His family.

Before we were saved, we were in bondage to sin. Sin ruled over us and we were lost. Yet our loving Heavenly Father sent His Son to die on the Cross so we could be offered the chance to join His family. Once we are saved, we are no longer servants to sin but are children of the King of kings.

As a child of God we are given many privileges, but perhaps none greater than the privilege of meeting with our Father. What greater ability than to meet with the Creator of the Universe and communicate intimately with Him! To build a strong relationship with your Heavenly Father, communication and obedience are key.

How close is your relationship with your Father? Just as most earthly fathers care for, love, and protect their children, so God desires to care for you. You may not have had the most loving earthly father, but recognize God's love for you. He sacrificed His only Son so that He could receive you as His child.

Take time right now to meet with your Father. Read His letter to you (the Bible), and learn of His promises specifically for your life. Remember that God is always with you, waiting to hear from you. He hears every whispered prayer, silent request, or heartfelt petition. Don't take for granted your relationship with your Heavenly Father, but spend time with Him each day.

The Great Tribulation—Part 2

Pray for us

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"Pray for us: for we trust we have a good conscience, in all things willing to live honestly."

Hebrews 13:18

Never take for granted the power of prayer.

I once read the following story of a missionary's testament to the power of prayer:

"A mother at our mission station died after giving birth to a premature baby. We tried to improvise an incubator to keep the infant alive, but the only hot water bottle we had was beyond repair. So we asked the children [at our orphanage] to pray for the baby and for her sister. One of the girls responded. 'Dear God, please send a hot water bottle today. Tomorrow will be too late because by then the baby will be dead. And dear Lord, send a doll for the sister so she won't feel so lonely.' That afternoon a large package arrived from England. The children watched eagerly as we opened it. Much to their surprise, under some clothing was a hot water bottle. Immediately the girl who had prayed so earnestly started to dig deeper, exclaiming, 'If God sent that, I'm sure He also sent a doll!' And she was right. The heavenly Father knew in advance of that child's sincere requests, and five months earlier He had led a ladies' group to include both of those specific articles."

Even the prayer of a small child could miraculously be answered by God. No prayer is too small or too bizarre for God to answer.

One of Paul's last comments in Hebrews is his request in our verse, "Pray for us." He desired that the readers of his letter would take time to pray for him and his fellow laborers. Studying the life of Paul we see the trials and pains he faced as he served God, and he requested prayer that God would strengthen him.

Prayer is your most important commodity as a Christian. With prayer, you have direct access to your Saviour, His power, and His help. Not only is prayer an important part of your personal Christian battle, prayer helps you intercede for other Christians.

Every Christian is facing difficult battles and is trying to stand against the devil's attacks. Satan's temptations may not be the same in their lives as they are in yours, but his presence is just as real to them. While you may not be able to actually help them fight the devil, you can help them through prayer. Notice three groups of people who need your prayers every day.

First, pray for your pastor and missionaries. God's servants face trials and attacks you may never face. They have been given the responsibility to lead God's people and carry a heavy burden. As blessed as they are to be used by God in the church, they need your daily prayers.

Second, pray for your family. Perhaps no other time in history has proved to be such a time of battle in the home like today. The devil is doing everything he can to break apart marriages, split homes, and pull children away from the Lord. Your spouse and your children need your prayers to help protect them from the devil's daily attacks. Do not take for granted the power your prayers have in their lives.

Last, pray for your friends. Whether or not your friends are saved, spend time mentioning them in your prayers each day. Your Christian friends are facing battles, and your unsaved friends or acquaintances need God to work in their lives. Pray that your friends will make wise decisions and choose to follow Christ.

Prayer is more powerful in Christian battle than the strongest army, the mightiest warrior, or the craftiest weapon. Your pastor, family, and friends need your prayers each day. Take a few minutes now to pray for these three categories of people. Ask God to protect, guide, and bless them. Never take for granted the power of prayer.

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you."

Hebrews 13:17

God often uses authority to work in your life.

Christian Herter is well-known as the fifty-third United States Secretary of State under President Dwight Eisenhower from 1959-1961, but held many different political positions throughout his life including Under Secretary of State, member of the U.S. House of Representatives, first United States Trade Representative, and governor of Massachusetts. A humorous story comes from his time spent campaigning for a reelection to the Massachusetts governorship. While on the road, he spent many days giving speeches, talking with voters, and traveling from town to town. As is typical with political candidates, his days were long and grueling, and he often looked forward to times when he could relax. One day he was scheduled to appear at a church picnic, and before he spoke to the crowd, he joined the attendees in a line for the potluck buffet.

As he progressed in the line, he reached a lady serving chicken. She served him one, but being especially hungry that day Herter asked, "Could I please have another piece of chicken?" The woman replied, "I'm sorry but I'm only supposed to give one chicken per person." "But I'm starving," he retorted. "Nope. One chicken for everybody" was her reply. While Governor Herter wasn't normally a boastful man, he decided the extra piece of chicken was worth it, "Do you know who I am? I am the governor of this state!" Not missing a beat, the lady replied, "Do you know who I am? I am the lady in charge of the chicken. Now move along, sir."

Hester thought his authority as governor would persuade the chicken lady to give him another piece, but he didn't realize her authority at the picnic outranked his. While this is a humorous story about authority, God gives us a serious message about honoring the authority in our lives in Hebrews 13, "Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves."

As parents, we teach our children to obey and respect their authorities, and we desire that they learn early in life to honor those over them by obeying their commands. However, even as adults, we must learn to submit to our authorities. While children are taught to obey because their authority usually knows best, we are told to obey because our authorities will one day account to God for us, "for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you."

Your pastor will one day stand before God and give an account for you and the rest of his congregation. Other authorities will give an account for how they appropriated the responsibility God entrusted to them. God desires that you would honor and obey authority so their accounting will not be in grief!

Often, God leads authority to make certain decisions and require certain things of you for a reason. God uses authority to work in your life. How can God work through authority if you will not obey them? While you may think you know best or authority may seem to be making a mistake, God desires that you would obey them. He placed them in your life for a reason.

While God doesn't want you to go against biblical commands no matter who requires it, He does desire for you to honor and obey your authority. Are you submitting to your authority's rule? Have you honored their requests? Remember that God has a purpose for everything that happens in your life. Trust that He has a plan even when you don't understand why, and obey those over you.

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased."

Hebrews 13:16

A lack of compassion is caused by an excess of pride.

Leo Durocher is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame for his twenty years playing and his thirty-seven years coaching. As a player he was selected as an all-star three times and won the pennant four times. Most notable about Derocher though was his witty statements, one of which was "Nice guys finish last." Over the years many people have quoted Durocher, and many examples of his statement have been seen. One example is notably remembered since the event happened in front of thousands of spectators. Nearly twenty years ago, a marathon tandem kayak-racing event was being held at the world championship in Copenhagen, Denmark. Many countries competed in the race, but perhaps no greater rivals raced that day than the Danish team and the British team. All year leading up to the world championship, trial races had been held and more often than not, the Danes and Brits finished within seconds of each other, sometimes the Danes taking the prize and sometimes the Brits winning. The stage was finally set as these two countries were paired side-by-side in the final race that would determine the ultimate winner between the two.

The signal sounded and the host of teams took off. While many teams jumped out to an early lead, the skill and careful determination of both the British and Danish teams was apparent. After several miles of rowing, the two teams led the pack of rowers. In the three-hour event, no time was afforded for mistakes or setbacks. Each team persistently rowed despite the pain in their bodies. The Danish team had a slight lead over the Brits when their rudder was suddenly damaged in a portage. Given a chance to pull ahead into an assured win or stop to help their rivals, the British team did the unthinkable-they slowed to a stop and helped the Danes fix their rudder. After the rudder was fixed, both teams continued their heated race and ended with the Danish team taking a one-second win over the Brits.

While the British team could have blown past the Danes and taken a lead that likely wouldn't have been lost, they chose to take the higher road and stop to help their fellow competitors. They realized that sometimes winning isn't everything.

Have you ever heard that "kindness doesn't pay"? Many people avoid stopping to help others, taking time to show compassion, or displaying care because they are too focused on themselves. A lack of compassion is caused by an excess of pride.

God commands us to "do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased." God is pleased when we do good to others. He delights when we sacrifice our time, energy, or money to help others. After all, He sacrificed His life for us (and for everyone on earth) so we could spend eternity with Him.

Did the nice guys finish last in the rowing championship story? Not exactly. You see, because of the British teams' sportsmanship, an award was given them to celebrate their sportsmanship and fair play, an award that is so prestigious it is only awarded to one team each year during the Olympic Games. While they may have lost the race, they won a more coveted trophy.

You probably won't win an award for showing kindness to your neighbors, nor will you be publicly recognized for doing good for others, yet God desires that you do good because He has done good for you.

How can you do good to someone around you today? Every day people are hurting or needing help, and God desires to use you to be a blessing to those people. Submit to His leading, and decide that no matter the sacrifice required, you'll allow God to use you to show kindness to someone else today.

Continual Praise

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name."

Hebrews 13:15

A body is not crippled till its heart ceases to praise.

Praise is easy to give when things are going well. We don't mind praising others when we are in a good mood, yet the toughest times to praise are when things aren't working out as we had planned. Take, for instance, the middle-aged Christian man who loved serving God and was faithful in his local church. He praised God by singing while serving as the church's maintenance man. His job wasn't elaborate, nor was his position seen, but he loved serving and praising God.

One day the man developed a sore throat that left him hoarse. After a few days of struggle through his sickness, he consulted a doctor who after running several tests diagnosed him with a rare form of cancer. Treatment for the cancer would render him without a voice for the rest of his life. Facing the fact he would never speak, sing, yell, or whisper ever again, the man had one thing to say, "Doctor, would you mind if I sing one last song before you begin treatments?" The man went on to sing Isaac Watt's hymn, "I'll Praise My Maker While I Have Breath."

Praising God came naturally while this man was serving God and enjoying the blessings of a godly life, yet when he faced sickness, painful treatments, and a life without his voice, he continued praising God even then. True praise continues even when circumstances turn sour.

Notice what Hebrews has to say, "By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name." We are to praise God continually-without ceasing.

When was the last time you set aside time to praise God? Have you taken time lately to praise and thank Him for His blessings? However not only does God want you to set aside time to thank Him, He also wants praise to be continually on your lips. Giving thanks to God after a blessing should be as natural as breathing. As Paul says, praising God should be the fruit of your lips.

God has done so many things for you. Stop right now and think about what He's done lately. Within the last few months, how has God blessed you? If you have a piece of paper near, write down some ways God's been good to you. Create a document on your computer and each day list out five ways God has blessed you. Use that list to develop a continual spirit of praise for the works God has done.

Someone once said, "A body is not crippled till its heart ceases to praise." Be in a continual state of praise today as you remember all the good things God has done for you.

by Dr. Paul Chappell

For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.

Hebrews 13:14

A life is not made by what you gain but by what you give.

The story is told of a young man who decided to journey by foot across the wide expanse of his country. He set off with a small bag containing only the most necessary of items he knew he would need. Day after day he climbed mountains, traveled across plains, and made his way through valleys. He was astonished at the beautiful sights he passed as he continued his journey. Many times he spent his nights on the ground, under a tree, or in an open field. The nights were cold, but he learned to endure the coldness. Other times, as he journeyed through towns and villages, he would meet a kind person and would take him in for the night. One such time came near the middle of his journey when he met an older man. The man he met was a devoutly religious man who was known for his compassion on strangers. When the young man told him of his journey, the older man graciously invited him to dine and stay with him for the night. After not sleeping in a bed for many nights, the young man was relieved, and greatly looked forward to his soft, warm place of rest for the night as the two men traveled to the house.

When they reached the house on the outskirts of town, the young man noticed that the old man lived in a small shack. The wooden home looked old, and the young man spotted several places that needed repair. Still, he was grateful to have a roof over his head. As they stepped into the home, the young man was shocked to see little furniture. A bookcase with several books stood against the far wall while a wooden table and chair sat in the middle of the room. A small cot was positioned against the adjoining wall, and other than those items, the house seemed barren. Frustrated by the realization he would not be sleeping in a soft bed, the young man voiced, "Where is all your furniture?" The older man looked at him kindly and asked, "Where are yours?" "Mine? Why, I am just a visitor here." As he smiled, the old man replied, "So am I."

Why do people place high value on money, possessions, and social advancement? Like this young man, many people today view life as an opportunity to get rather than to give. However, the older man taught the young man a very important lesson that is also seen in Hebrews 13:14, For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.

As a Christian, earth is not your home. Your hometown is not your home. An address does not describe your home. All these places could describe where you reside, but they are not your final dwelling place. As Hebrews says, you have no continuing city, but your home is still to come.

Someone once said, "A life is not made by what you get but by what you give. The world's view of life is to get, while God desires that you would recognize the place of possessions and live to give. This world and its possessions won't last forever. Soon a day will come when all the things of this world will pass away. What will be left? What will you have to show for your life? Rather than living to obtain, seek to give to others through your life.

Don't adopt the world's view of ownership. God gives to you so you can give to others, give to His church, and give to His missionaries. Just as the old man in the story recognized he was only on earth for a short time, ask God to give you a heavenly perspective of the things of this world. Remember, live to give to others.

Content with Christ

                    Friday, January 29, 2010

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee."

Hebrews 13:5

Content makes poor man rich; discontent makes rich men poor.-Benjamin Franklin

In the early fifth century, a man named Arenius decided to abandon his wealthy lifestyle and view life from a different perspective, a poorer perspective. He sold all he had, left his home, and lived a wanderer's life in the deserts outside Egypt. At first, going without even basic necessities was difficult for him. After all, he was accustomed to having whatever his heart desired. As time passed, though, he learned a new way of living and became quite content with his lifestyle.

However, every time he visited the town of Alexandria, his old hometown, he would spend much time roaming the bazaars and marketplaces. He would peruse the goods being sold, admire the advances of Egyptian society, and wonder at the many different possessions to be bought. After many instances of his perusal, someone stopped him and asked why he visited the markets yet never bought anything. Why did he continue to browse if he wanted to live so minimally? He answered, "My heart does rejoice each time I see all the things I do not need in life!"

Arenius had learned to make do with what he had in his desert lifestyle. He learned that what once he considered a necessity was no longer necessary to his survival. He had learned to be content.

Contentment isn't a popular idea nowadays. Contentment at work could get you fired. Contentment in finances could get you ridiculed. Contentment in possessions could earn you a lower social status. While we should never be content in our spiritual growth, God does want us to learn to live a contented life.

Contentment is defined as "the state of being contented; satisfaction; ease of mind." Discontentment leads to a very stressful, fast-paced, and often joy-less life. Always seeking newer possessions, better social status, or the newest craze is not how God desires we live. Why should we be content? "For he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee."

Our contentedness does not rest on the amount of money in our bank account, but on the fact that Christ is always with us. No matter where we go, what we do, problems we face, trials we endure, temptations we fall into, sins we commit, storms we encounter, or transitions we make, Christ is with us. God promises that He will never leave us.

The fact you have God with you at all times should cause you to rejoice! He is never more than a prayer away. No amount of money can buy that and no possessions can bring you such joy. While the world enjoys their possessions, God desires that Christians would be content with knowing He is always with them.

Are you content with having Christ as your Saviour? Are you content knowing your eternal home is Heaven? The promises of God are greater than the possessions of the world. The next time you're tempted to chase the things of this world, remember God's promise of provision, protection, and nearness. Think of the promises of Heaven and glory in knowing you will spend eternity with God. Allow God's presence to create contentment in your heart today.

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares."

Hebrews 13:2

Someone you meet is facing a tougher battle than you are.

The year was 1932 and a brutal winter had settled into Chicago. Snow came daily, ice covered sidewalks and streets, and only the brave dared face the winds. In the heart of the Great Depression, many people found themselves homeless, penniless, and sometimes family-less. One family had an especially tough time that year. You see, their father had lost his job a few months before winter and had left his family. Out of money, the mother found an old car in which she and her three children could live. They often missed meals and slept without the heater running. However, no matter how poorly they were doing, they never missed a church service at the local church. Come Sundays, the mother would wrap up the children in the best outfits they had and would head off to church. Often, people stared at her family and tried to avoid them due to their matted hair and dirty appearances. The mother knew people around her judged her based on her appearance, yet she tried to press on with a smile.

One day as the mother struggled to find food, she began thinking of her children and how she had not been a very good mother to them. She thought of their shaking bodies as they slept at night and the growling of their stomachs most days. She couldn't stand the thoughts any longer. She had decided to give up. As she walked to a nearby bridge with every intention of jumping off, a car stopped along the road ahead of her. Out jumped a lady she recognized as someone from her church. "You must be freezing out here! Come with me and we'll get you warmed up," commented the lady. The mother resisted at first, but finally conceded. They traveled back to her parked car, picked up her children, then headed for the lady's home. Come to find out, this lady was new to the church and had noticed the mother and her family the past Sunday but hadn't been able to meet them yet. She recognized her walking along the road and decided to invite them to dinner. After much discussion and introductions, the lady realized the family had been living in the car for several months. Shocked she stated, "Why, that's not going to do. My husband and I have an added apartment on the back of our house for guests, and I would feel terrible if you didn't come stay with us at least until you can get back on your feet." Embarrassed, the mother refused, yet the church lady was insistent. Finally, the mother relented and she and her family lived with the nice church couple for the next few months.

The church lady's decision to extended kindness to this mother saved her life, and probably the lives of her children. Yet the church lady probably never knew how great of an impact she had on this family. She was simply showing kindness to others.

Have you ever stopped to think about the people you meet in a given day? Think about them: the bus driver, coffee shop clerk, grocery store cashier, fast food restaurant worker, and fellow shoppers. Many of them carry burdens you will never understand. Some of them may have lost a loved one, others may be facing marital problems, and some may be thinking of giving up on life. Yet you hold with you the greatest answer each of them needs-the Gospel.

Day by day people experience hurt and failure. Especially in tough economic times, people are strapped with added pressures. While your life may have its trials, consider the trials of others. Think of the losses some people are experiencing.

God reminds us in Hebrews 13:2, "Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares." Don't neglect those around you; spread kindness to strangers; do something nice for others. You never know who you'll meet as you look to reach out to others in loving kindness.

Focus on others today. As you see someone, think of how they might be struggling. Rather than focusing on yourself, ask God to allow you to spread kindness to someone you meet. Never forget that someone you meet may be facing a tougher battle than you are.

Let Love Continue

                    Wednesday, January 27, 2010

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"Let brotherly love continue."

Hebrews 13:1

If Christ can love those who crucified Him, we can love those who wrong us.

Love is one of the most powerful motivators. A perfect example of such motivating love comes in the form of an old Baptist preacher from early America. The American Revolution was just beginning in the hearts of the American people, and many were pushing for the colonies to go to war with England. Unknown to many people, English loyalists, who supported their homeland, despised the Americans' audacity to break free from England, and sought to defeat the colonists from inside their own country. One such man was Michael Wittman, an evil loyalist who lived in Ephrata, Pennsylvania. In the same town lived a Baptist minister named Peter Miller who was close friends with George Washington. Miller did all he could to reach out to everyone in Ephrata and invite them to church, but by far his biggest critic was Wittman. Wittman did all he could to publicly humiliate, denounce, and ridicule Pastor Miller, but Miller continued to love him.

As was bound to happen, word came out that Wittman was a loyal defender of England and a traitor of America. He was brought before a judge and was condemned to death. Because of his love for Wittman, Miller walked seventy miles from Ephrata to the military prison in Philadelphia where Wittman was being held. Knowing General Washington was in charge at the military compound, Miller sought him out and pleaded for the release of Michael Wittman. Washington replied, "I am truly sorry, Peter, but I cannot release your friend Michael." "My friend! Why, he is my worst enemy," remarked Miller. Washington was shocked, "You mean you traveled seventy miles on foot to plead for the life of your enemy? Why that does put things in a different light. Wittman will be released." That day Wittman and Miller walked home not as enemies, but as friends.

What made the difference in Washington's view of Miller's request? The fact that Miller would go to great lengths for an enemy, a man who had wronged him many times, showed his genuine love for Wittman and swayed Washington's approval of the pardon. Miller didn't simply show love when it was convenient; he truly cared about Wittman.

The ultimate example of true love is in Jesus Christ. His love for others, even those who rejected Him, led Him to endure this world's trials and die a cruel death on a rugged cross. His wasn't a convenient love, but a genuine love to all.

Often a person's actions can affect our love for them. We're wronged, mistreated, forgotten, or abused in some way, and as a result our love for that person ceases. Have you ever been wronged by someone and simply wrote them off your "list" as a result? God reminds us that just as He was rejected and rebuked, so sometimes we will be as well.

People will make mistakes, and sometimes those mistakes will adversely affect you. Sometimes a hurtful word will be spoken, or some action will offend. God's desire is that apologies would be made and relationships would be restored, yet some people would rather ignore someone for years rather than making things right.

"Let brotherly love continue." God's desire is for you to love all people, the friendly ones and the bitter ones. Even when others mistreat you, let love continue. Even when you've been backstabbed or wronged, let love continue. Even when the other person wants no part in your love, let love continue.

Is there someone whom you've stopped loving? Don't allow petty arguments, hurtful words, bitter feelings, or mistakes affect your love for another person. If Christ can endure a crowd of His people yelling for His crucifixion and still pour out His love for them on Calvary, you can forgive someone's wrong actions and continue loving them. Seek today to let your love continue to all people.

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds."

Hebrews 12:2-3

Jesus chose to die on the Cross because He knew the reward of His death would be eternal life for you.

Many times politicians and public servants are typified as older men of renown and distinguished service. This view of politicians has been carried throughout history, even in England. One man who did not fit this image was William Wilberforce. At age twenty one, Wilberforce began his political career and four years later was elected as a member of Parliament. Until that time, Wilberforce had been interested in England's government and the ruling body of the land, yet his view on government took on a new role when, at the age of twenty six, he was converted to Christianity. Viewing life from a moral perspective, he became a supporter of a more conservative, repressed form of government in England.

Two years after his conversion, he was introduced to several prominent men who were lobbyists against the slave trade in England. Recognizing the moral injustice of the slave trade industry, Wilberforce joined forces with them, and became one of England's greatest proponents for the abolition of the slave trade. Working tirelessly over several years, William finally saw the Slave Trade Act of 1807 pass, a law that abolished the buying and selling of slaves (but did not outlaw slavery entirely). With a renewed sense of urgency, William focused on slavery as a whole-speaking out against it, drafting laws to abolish it, and rallying English citizens behind his cause. Because the outlawing of slavery would affect many people's work lives, Wilberforce was often ridiculed, mistreated and threatened for his work. In fact, the adversity grew so intense at one point that Wilberforce thought of giving up on the cause. One day as he was reading his Bible, out fell a letter from his friend and spiritual mentor John Wesley that stated, "Unless the divine power has raised you up...I see not how you can go through your glorious enterprise in opposing that (abominable practice of slavery), which is the scandal of religion, of England, and of human nature. Unless God has raised you up for this very thing, you will be worn out by the opposition of men and devils. But if God be for you, who can be against you? Are all of them together stronger than God? Oh, be not weary of well-doing. Go on in the name of God, and in the power of His might." Gaining strength from this reminder, Wilberforce pressed on in his work and three days before he died, he was informed that the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 was assured to pass Parliament.

For decades, Wilberforce was seeking to tear down the normality of life for Englanders. He was pitted against many friends, I'm sure. Yet even in his struggle, he pressed on. He didn't witness the abolition of slavery because he quite, but because he endured despite the setbacks and adversity.

The Bible refers to the Christian life as a battle throughout Scripture. God doesn't promise us a life of ease or comfort once we accept His Son, but instead encourages us to take up the sword of His Word and fight the devil's attacks. Setbacks will come; attacks are certain; and struggles will ensue; yet God encourages us to endure the battle.

As is the case with many of God's commands to us, He doesn't give us the order to endure without giving us an example. Notice the last half of Hebrews 12:2, "who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God." Christ endured the Cross. He suffered the shame of this world, the reproach of those around Him, and agonized a cruel death. Why did He endure when He could have easily chosen to forego the pain? Jesus chose to die on the Cross because He knew the reward of His death would be eternal life for you. He endured with His eyes focused on the reward.

How can you endure when the devil's attacks seem to be overwhelming? How can you keep going on in spite of unthinkable circumstances? "Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith." Only through Christ can you endure the trials of this world. Only through a focus on the end result-an eternity with Him for believers-can you feel the world's attacks yet endure. Remember as you face trials today to look unto Jesus. Only He can give you the strength to endure until the day you meet your Saviour face to face.
