Intel introduced a new family of Ice Lake CPUs for laptops. The processors are made on Intel’s’ new 10nm manufacturing technology equipped with completely new Gen 11 GPU. They use the Sunny Cove CPU architecture with various modifications and improvements. Ice Lake U models have a standard power consumption of 15-25 W, while Ice Lake Y CPUs have a reduced power consumption of 9-12 W. The number of CPU cores is up to 4, and the number of threads is up to 8.

This news was confirmed during Intel Computex 2019, and Intel announced that Ice Lake processors will range from Core i3 to Core i7. These processors will have up to four cores and eight threads, which we hope will lead to incredible performance. If this is not enough, Intel also claims that such chips must operate at frequencies up to 4.1 GHz.

According to the new CPU developers, fresh CPUs of the tenth generation are 2.5 times faster in artificial intelligence tasks than Intel Core processors of the eighth generation. These impressive results are due to the new Intel DL Boost technology. And the Intel Iris Plus GPU on the 11th generation architecture makes the new processors twice as productive as the same eighth generation. Also, new Ice Lake platform now has Thunderbolt 3 interfaces and an Intel Wireless Adapter Wi-Fi 6 (Gig +), which provides data rates higher than 1 Gbps.

Ice Lake is the latest Intel processor platform, which has become a 10th generation CPU. This will be the first family of mainstream processors using a 10nm process technology.

The 10 nm process marks a huge moment for Intel, which has been trying to reduce its 14-nm process since 2016 but has suffered many failures. The presence of a smaller component means that a larger number of transistors can fit on a chip, and, in turn, increases the performance of the chip.

Intel also suggests that a process with a smaller 10 nm will allow laptop manufacturers to create thinner and lighter devices without sacrificing performance. We already had a trial peak of a potential new Dell XPS with an Intel Lake processor, but so far there is no additional information about this.

However, Intel may still be lagging behind, since AMD is already using 7 nm processors for its processors after the announcement of the Ryzen 3 chips.

New 10 nanometer Intel Ice Lake CPUs have been sent to global manufacturers. The first ready-made solutions will appear no earlier than October or November of this year.

AMD Ryzen 3000 CPUs are known to be a multi-chip assembly consisting of one 14nm I/O chip and one or two 7nm chips with Zen 2 cores. The Infinity Fabric bus is used to exchange information between these chips, and it will be possible to adjust the bus speed between the chips.

The memory controller in the CPU Ryzen 3000 has been moved to the 14-nm I/O chip. Same as before, the speed of the Infinity Fabric bus is tied to the speed of RAM, but in Zen 2 chips it can be clocked at half the memory frequency (for example, 1000 MHz for DDR4 4000 RAM). This allows access to modes up to DDR4 5000 and higher. Please note that currently, the AM4 platform has a limitation of DDR4 4200.

On the other hand, the overclocking potential of Ryzen 3000 CPUs when talking about overclocking RAM remains to be seen after their release. The new processors will have the same memory controller as Zen/Zen +, but with some functions unlocked. According to the new UEFI firmware, they will support the PCI Express 4.0 interface (at least partially). This support will be provided by all the motherboards based on AMD B450 and X470 chipsets.

At the Computex 2019, which will begin in less than three weeks from now, MSI will introduce motherboards on the new AMD X570 chipset. These boards will be designed for the new Ryzen 3000-series processors, which AMD will also present as part of the upcoming Computex Information Technology Show.

What is the meaning on numbers 5, 6 and 7 on new MSI motherboards? Figures 5 and 7 obviously refer us to the name of the new chipset – X570. But the number six and the wireless network icon blinking above hints at the support of Wi-Fi 6 standard MEG X570 Ace wireless communication. By the way, MSI itself hinted that these guesses are correct.

Other motherboard manufacturers will also present their new products based on the latest AMD X570 chipset at the Computex 2019. Biostar and Gigabyte have already announced upcoming announcements, now MSI has joined them, and the rest will follow soon.

So, the third-generation AMD Ryzen processors (Series 3000) based on the Zen 2 architecture will overcome the tremendous amount of memory limitations inherent in previous generations. In Zen 2, the memory controller is separated from the CPU and placed on a separate I/O chip.

Overclocking capabilities are significantly improved in the third generation Ryzen processors. This is indicated by the memory frequency support found in the Zen 2 BIOS up to DDR4 5000. The DRAM clock frequency is still related to the Infinity Fabric (IF) bus clock frequency. This means that at the DDR4 5000 memory frequency, the Infinity Fabric bus would also have to work at a clock frequency of 2500 MHz. Since this speed is not available for IF, the developers decided to add a 1/2 divider mode for the internal bus. In this mode, the IF operates at half the clock frequency of DRAM (in the case of DDR4 5000, at a frequency of 1250 MHz).

This may be an additional advantage of motherboards based on the AMD X570 chipset since their BIOS will include not only parameters for a higher memory clock frequency but also a divider mode. In addition, the new platform has SoC overclocking mode and the ability to control the voltage VDDG.

The current 16-core AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X processor, which belongs to a higher class of solutions for the HEDT segment, has frequencies of 3.5/4.4 GHz base/boost clock. But while its TDP level is 180 watts. in the 16-core Ryzen 3000 mentioned above, the TDP level will most likely not exceed 100 watts. And, again, these clocks are achieved in the engineering samples of the new CPU. It the final version, the frequencies are likely to be higher.

The appearance of the Ryzen 3000 16-core processor partly explains why AMD is not planning to release a new generation of high-performance desktop processors Ryzen Threadripper. It is possible that new Threadripper processors will appear later and will offer from 24 up to 64 cores, following the example of the older EPYC Rome server chips.

HyperX, the gaming division of Kingston Technology, announced the release of two new Predator DDR4 high-speed memory modules. The manufacturer has prepared very high-speed versions that may interest users of the most powerful desktop platforms. The company has remained with a proven design and provides a lifetime warranty on their devices. New items are presented in the form of sets of two modules of 8 GB each and they operate at effective frequencies of 4266 MHz and 4600 MHz respectively. The appearance of the modules draws attention to the black color of the PCB and aluminum heat sink that visually blends in with modern PCs assembled by enthusiasts.

The HyperX Predator DDR4 memory has a high frequency, up to 4600 MHz, and low latency: CL12 – CL19. The XMP (Extreme Memory Profile) technology allows you to overclock the memory speed in excess of the standard industry specifications. HyperX memory modules go through a rigorous certification process and are thoroughly tested for XMP compliance. The new HyperX Predator DDR4 memory modules are optimized to work with the latest Intel chipsets, and are compatible with many of the new AMD chipsets.

The XyperX Predator series should be better known to PC users, as the hardware is offered in many different versions, including the popular 2x 8 GB 3200 MHz memory modules. At this time, we are talking about products that are much more efficient and definitely more expensive. This is a memory with a clock frequency of 4266 MHz and 4600 MHz. Users can only select sets consisting of two modules of 8 GB each. At the moment, it is not known whether the company is preparing other versions at all.

Each set has two saved XMP 2.0 profiles. One is common to both new products, the other already contains parameters specific to a particular version.

Below are the characteristics of both new DDR4 memory modules:

DDR4 4266 MHz CL 19-26-26, operating at 1.4 V;

DDR4 4600 MHz CL 19-26-26, operating at 1.5 V;

DDR4 4000 MHz CL 19-21-21, operating at 1.35 V (second XMP profile, common for both kits).

From the specs above, we can see that HyperX Predator DDR4 modules work with CL19 latency. They support XMP profiles, and are guaranteed to be compatible with many of the latest chipsets from Intel and AMD. The ‘slower’ DDR4 4266 modules operate at a voltage of 1.4 V, while faster DDR4 4600 modules operate at a voltage of 1.5 V. The module dimensions are 133.35 x 42.2 x 8.3 mm.

Currently, the price of the new HyperX Predator DDR4 RAM modules remains a mystery, although it should be expected that it will be very high. It is enough to mention that the XyperX Predator 2x 8 GB module kit with a frequency of 4133 MHz costs about $220, and here we have even faster DDR4 memory modules.

There are rumors that Asus and few other manufacturers are preparing new gaming laptops that combine AMD Ryzen Picasso processors and Turing based graphics cards. The new ASUS laptops are TUF Gaming FX505DU and ROG GU502DU. Both laptops are built on the latest AMD 3000 Series mobile hybrid processors: Ryzen 5 3550H and Ryzen 7 3750H, respectively. These chips each include four Zen + cores that are capable of operating on eight threads.

The level 3 cache is 6 MB, and the TDP level does not exceed 35 watts. The Ryzen 5 3550H processor operates at 2.1 / 3.7 GHz, while the older Ryzen 7 3750H features 2.3 / 4.0 GHz.

Both laptops are based on the new Zen + architecture launched earlier this year. Asus has already used new AMD processors in their laptops. For example, in the Asus TUF FX505DY laptop, equipped with a Ryzen 5 3550H and a mid-range video card Radeon RX 560X 2017 release. Now the new hybrid processors from AMD will be made by the company Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 based on Turing architecture.

The combination of AMD’s APUs and Nvidia’s graphics cards looks quite a bit strange, since the Picasso family of processors is equipped with its own highly productive Vega 10 and Vega 8 graphics and for more demanding graphics loads they’ll use the full GTX 1660 Ti graphics card.

By the way, the mobile version of the latter has not yet been submitted, but a leak from 3DMark indicates the existence of a Max-Q version of the recently introduced graphics card accelerator.

There are no specifications of this graphics card yet, but it can be expected that its technical characteristics will be comparable with the desktop version: 1536 CUDA cores and 6 GB of GDDR6 video memory. But the clock frequency may vary depending on the model.

It will be very interesting to see the actual prices of these machines and check the performance of these unique Asus innovative laptops.
