She's handled a variety of large projects acting as a mediator, a negotiator, and instructing large companies how to manage conflict at all levels. I admit, it's an industry I don't know a lot about. I took the opportunity to chat with her and discovered that a workshop was coming up in June that I just had to share.

Here's Pattie sharing a little about herself, her experiences, and the workshop itself.

When we write to our friends and family we tend to let our guard down a bit and write as humans, sharing our experiences. In a recent Twitter chat, it was mentioned that email, having replaced hand written letters, is a form a content creation that comes from the heart. The concept should be taken to another level, the blog.

No where else do more people struggle with the tone and approach than with the blog. Should it be serious? Should I only talk about business and professionalism? Can I be funny? There seems to be a lot of fear, especially in the realm of the business blog. It's a discussion that I'd like to take a look at briefly.

Being Human Is...Human

To think that you can be anything else is ludacris. Not a single one of us is a machine, we don't simply type out content without having some kind of human attachment to it. Whether your a personal blogger writing about a personal experience or perspective, or a business blogger hired to share the company's mission, goals, achiemevement and expertise, we are all somehow tied to the content we create.

Taking the idea of the personable way we approach email, why not bring some of that same approachablity to blog writing? Rather than write a blog with big fancy industry words, and strict adherance to facts and numbers, add some appeal to it by putting yourself into the post, the voice can go a long way in communicating the idea your trying to get across.

Typically in a professional setting there may already be guidelines for handling external communication. It does not hurt to ask to review it, and if you've been hired to manage those communication duties, offer suggestions in order to make some positive changes, especially after reviewing what their current and past engagement levels have been.

Humans will want to engage with other humans. Taking the personable way you write your email can go a long way in how you write a blog. Don't be afraid to add a pinch of that into your blog post. If there are multiple writers, create a strategy to still maintain the voice of the company but integrating some personality from each of the writers.

I challenge you to experiment with it. Consider the approach next you write a personal email. Thoughts?

I was in sports, clubs, and personal live on top of the day to day rigor of academics. All in all, I had the energy and the time to make things happen. In college that energy shifted to late night studying, late night munchie runs, and then some. There was a lot less physical activity and a lot more long nights of studying, work, and exams. I paid a dear price in terms of my health and it's something I have yet to recover from.

Yesterday, May 1, I started a personal project, and the project is ME. I'm the canvas and my actions are the stroke of the brush. I'm on a mission to win my health back. I've gained a lot of weight, I've lost a lot of time, and because I love my wife and three kids, I'm doing this for me and my longevity (of course provided nothing happens to me in the interim).

As a blogger, media mixer, content creator, and social media advisor, I find most of my day is spent in front of a computer or on the phone. This is why I'm making the switch to a more active lifestyle and I invite you to join me on the journey.

I call my project "Everyman's Fitness." It's for the everyman, all of us, to join, participate, at the very least reflect on. I plan on doing a video and a snapshot of my daily intake over the next 90 days and then see the results.

We'll see where his journey takes me.

Marketing, Online Strategy for Social Media, and ROI

Too often I share links I find interesting on Twitter, Facebook, and even on a few bookmarking sites, but I'm never sure if I'm covering all of the possible places that people might find content.

Today I got to thinking about how I share my content and thought that perhaps having a daily post (I'll try to keep it going) with useful links I've found throughout the day might be interesting for those that are not online all the time or might have missed some valuable content.

Here are a few links regarding social media, business, and online strategy that I think you'll find interesting along with a contest that was shared with me via one of the Twitter chat I attended, #getrealchat.
It was probably one of the most contested topics that I've been involved with in my short time with Twitter chats, but it was interesting to see the varied responses to the generalizations being made, and the specific metrics to individual people and their niches.

Dan Zarrella of Hubspot was the guest for the chat and he had some great things to say on the idea of social media, timing of content, timing of marketing that content, and the return from different times of the day. While I see the value of strategically timing the content to hit maximum engagement, it also seems to take the idea of being social, and removes the authenticity. I can see both sides of the argument, in my experience, businesses can't plan their future on relationships alone, there needs to be some kind of measurable return. Below is Dan's Hubspot presentation, which he linked to during the chat.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on the idea of timing your content, do you measure and plan with that in mind?

We've all met someone like this in life and we all make the effort to refrain from engaging with them. To say that we'd rather not speak to people like that is an understatement. If this is unacceptable for your real life engagement, why would it be any different online?

This is something I see all too often. In the world of online engagement, the conversation is real, the people (more often than not) are real, the only thing different is the medium through which the conversation is being channeled. Still, we're seeing marketers overreach their authority by claiming full control over social media channels on behalf of a company. This completely neuters the overall depth and insight your company could be capable of.

Why is Social Media Assigned to Marketing Departments?
In a recent Twitter chat, #speakchat, host, Michele Price, had guest, Olivier Blanchard, discuss this as one of many topics for the night. Olivier shared four points on why companies so quickly allow the marketing department to handle social media engagement.

Because the term "media" tends to fall intuit he realm of media management functions, hence, marketing.

Because social media deals with communicating, again in the operational realm of marketing.

Because marketers want to OWN the conversation…to market.

Because most companies need to assign it to someone (the marketing department comes to mind very easily).

These are some very general points, but take a look at how some of your clients have assigned social media, or how companies you've been involved with have thought of social media. More than likely because it had to be done by someone, it was given to the marketing department.

Words of Wisdom for Social Media Management

No one owns any conversation. Think about how different each of the departments inside a company are, but all driven towards the same goal. The perspective of the receptionist is just as important as the perspective of the marketer or the person in human resources. Many companies like Southwest Airlines and Dell allow for multiple people to engage on social media, offering unique views on company engagement. This allows all departments to take part in the outward voice of the brand.

No company started out day one like this, but rather focused on building the company culture to accept social engagement as a way of doing business, and then focused on key individuals to train, prepare, and release into the social stream. There's still a lot of strategy behind the whole process, but that's for another post.

How do you see online engagement occurring in your company? Is it owned by one department or are the points of view from other departments considered and allowed into the conversation?

Content Rules and You Can Too

I'm currently rethinking my process of creating content and looking into new approaches to engage with my audience both on this site and a variety of ventures that I participate in. The role of content creator is one I take pride in, since I look to develop ideas that are engaging, shareable, and educational.

That is why I'm so happy to have Content Rules (affiliate link), which was delivered over the weekend. The book, as stated in the title, speaks to two things. First the idea that content rules the internet, but are we really creating the type of content that attracts? Secondly, there's "rules" to creating content, though I use that term loosely, but suffice to say, there's things that can make your content pop.

I'm such a huge fan that I decided to run a small contest, watch the video below for details!

Participation only valid within the United States. Contest ends Friday at midnight, CST. Good luck!

Show Support for Content Creators

Long before Social Media Club existed with their "Learn, Share, Grow!" slogan, a lot of us were already of that mindset. Perhaps that why social engagement came so naturally to us. We've never been ones to hoard information, but rather, show others how to embrace it, use it, and cultivate a community around what we're doing. From the days of IRC chat rooms, message boards, newsgroups, and the like, we've all surrounded a common interest, invited other like minded individuals to join us and had many conversations.

Despite the growing number of social sites, the idea is still the same, only now we can do it in video, audio, photo, or text format. The idea is the same, the tools we use to convey our messages have changed. This particularly interest me because as someone who creates content, I also spend a great deal digesting content others create. I spend time on other blogs commenting, watching videos and commenting, enjoying photos from events that people are posting and so on. It's important for me to be engaged and it should be for you too.

Embrace A Content Creator
That being said, who will you support today? Remember, a great many of us create content and wonder sometimes if anyone sees it...better said...if anyone cares? If you have a favorite blog you visit, read and leave a comment. The next YouTube video you watch, leave a comment. Show people that you're engaging with their material and you might be surprised as the relationships you can forge.

I'd like to share someone I'm supporting and if you're a fellow lover of food, then you'll love what Daniel Delaney is doing with his videos covering a wide range of topics from curbside food to exploring unique and interesting foods everyday for 2011. He's doing an amazing job in iTunes, and I encourage you to support his efforts if you like his videos. Here's a taste of what he's doing.
I think that's why I leave the expert off my title when I introduce myself. Taking a page from Social Media 101 by Chris Brogan, I tend to consider myself a guide, and advisor, taking people from point A to B to C, exploring, and always learning. The buck never stops with me.

As such, I had never really participated in a Twitter Chat, though I had heard a great number of things about them. In theory the idea of chatting with over 500 people, in some cases, boggled my mind. I think out of sheer fear and possibly disinterest at the time, I simply ignored what was happening, until now.

This week I've already joined three Twitter chats, deciding to jump right in and find topics that interest me. Sunday night I joined #blogchat which is an awesome discovery of bloggers from all walks of life and interests. Last night I joined #journchat and rolled right into #speakchat, for journalists/bloggers, and public speakers respectively. In the short time I was a part of this active community I expanded my knowledge base on a few things and got great action items to not only increase the value of my content, but to increase the value of my relationships.

If you've not taken a look at Twitter Chats before, I recommend you dive right in. Find what interests you, and dive right in. Most of the people in the communities don't bite...

Here's a great list that was shared with me tonight if you're looking for a very comprehensive list of Twitter Chats happening around the clock.

Admit Missteps, Fix the Future

Transparency in social media is nothing new. You can find all sorts of articles discussing the topic, sharing tips on how to be "transparent." You'll even hear some of the bigger names in new media mention it in presentation after presentation, but how many people are truly on board with the idea?

Big brands are still relying on agencies to manage their social accounts entirely, we're seeing issues where being human is causing loss of employment, embarrassment and more. Perhaps the world isn't really ready for true transparency, regardless of how ideal the concept might be.

Which is why I was very surprised and inspired by reading two blogs posts by Justin Kownacki entitled "Why I'm Reinventing Myself: A Financial Awakening at 33" and "How Throwing My Back Out Made Me A Better Businessman." Both of these posts are truly introspective with something that all of us can learn.

Looking at the frustration of financial insecurities, the realization having no structure to succeed, and the sharing of a personal health issue that turned into an epiphany are well shared stories that I enjoyed reading.

Take a look at both of these and see transparency at work. It's an honest reflection on life and an earnest effort to communicate, engage, and improve. I love it!

Systems for Time Management

While surfing Facebook yesterday I was greeted by a post from Chris Brogan, where he shared a video regarding the idea of time management and productivity. I struggle with that on a personal and professional level sometimes. When stuff comes at you a mile a minute, it's easy to think it all has to get done NOW. After seeing the video and then reading an article he later recommended by Marcy Massura, productivity and the lack of action on my part was on the brain.

Business At the Speed of Fright

It's scary when you realize that business is slowing down or not happening because of your own self sabotage in not integrating a system that works for you. When I speak of systems I speak of processes, tools, strategies, and outcomes. It's easy to haphazardly get by on things that can quickly be put together, but how is that serving the overall goal of furthering your success. There's getting work done for the sake of getting it done, and then there's getting work done intentionally with the idea of having an endgame, a purpose to getting it done.

Are you working intentionally? I've fallen out of sync with the few things that I enjoyed doing and the realization of that came hard and fast after reading and viewing the two posts above.

I look to find purpose in my actions and I'm dusting off my wish list of projects once again. I don't make any glamorous promises either. I don't think any of us. I will do what we all do, is take it one day at a time. A plan is always good to have, but is never realized until you fulfill the actions of today. Good food for thought and with that I'm back to planning my schedule.

Are you struggling with finding your pace? Let's hear what systems you've put in place for yourself and help others who are looking for guidance.
This Monday I spoke at RISE Austin and had an audience that was more responsive than I expected.

Great questions, great learning, and as a presenter, I like to make my presentations more like discussions where the audience can freely share their perspectives or introduce items that I may have missed. I encourage this because in the end, everyone should walk out with at least one thing new that they didn't know when they entered.

I want to thank RISE Austin for having me back as a presenter and of course the attendees for my presentation. For those of you who were unable to make it to RISE here's the presentation.

Next week, on March 7th, I'll be presenting during RISE Austin. RISE stands for Relationship & Information Series for Entrepreneurs, so I'm expecting a number of entrepreneurs at all levels to be sitting in on my session.

My presentation, Diversifying Your Integrated Media Strategy, will focus on the integrated use of new media with existing marketing efforts and how no effort should stand alone. I invite you to join me, introduce yourself.

If you're in the Austin area or plan on attending RISE, then you can register for my session, but be sure to take a look at some of the other sessions happening throughout the week. There's a lot of great topics to be discussed and everyone presenting is very talented in their respective fields, so there's a lot to learn.

Hope to see you all there!

A Thing About Camps

The month of February has come to a close and it's been a very busy month for me personally, but also for the surrounding community of media and tech enthusiasts. As we go into the month of March, there seems to be no end in sight as I prepare for more local conferences, SXSW, regional presentations and more.

Recently I attended MobiCampSA, the company I work for (Sweb Development) also sponsored the event, and came out with some interesting perspectives in an industry that I thought I knew so well. I love the serendipitous nature of "camps" and always look forward to connecting with familiar faces and meeting new ones.

The most powerful presentation was done by Randy Bear who discussed the nature of mobile technology become our identity. In our hands we have more and more smartphones, Apple, Android, Windows Mobile, Blackberry, to name some of the major ones. We've become so dependent on them to store data, manage our schedules, make payments for us, create digital content, and in some cases interface with our cars to create a unique personal driving experience. In some cases our phones might know us better than our real world friends.

I had never really thought that deep into how dependent I am on my mobile, and the reality struck me, I recovered, and started some very interesting conversations in the hallways post the presentation.

Afterwords I attended sessions on being a mobile journalist, social causes using mobile technology, and mobile marketing. All in all the event was well done, and just in the short time I was able to attend walked away with some thoughts that I hope to turn into posts or videos in the near future.

The community is alive where I am, and while attending MobiCampSA, there was already talk about hosting another PodCamp. The community is mobilizing that quickly. There's a hunger of sharing and learning that I love fueling myself on and I encourage you to take a look at the BarCamp model of unconferences and perhaps a passion of yours will inspire you to host one in your area.

Interest of Another Variety

Got a hobby? An interest that takes you away from what you do day in and day out to help you decompress. I have a huge interest in Japanese pop culture and media, specifically anime. I watch it when I can (which is getting more rare as my days get busier), and I always love sharing some of what I find with others.

A huge nod to the crew over at Anime TV who have recently left Revision3, but have not allowed that to halt their progress. Anime programming on internet TV is rare, at least of the talk show and review variety, but they serve it up well and they are making a come back. And why not the tools are there and they're making the most of it.

Here's their latest episode where I was able to engage with them in a little Q&A as they read my question along with others who submitted their inquiries. Do you interact with your audience on a public level and if so, what's the response been?

*My question starts at 33 sec. in.

Online Networks Are Not an Island

I had some one recently come to me to discuss their utter disappointment in the use of social media. Their efforts to market their message and share their ideas hit a wall and they felt that they were not acquiring the audience they required. On the surface they appeared to be doing everything right. Their profiles were robust with useful information, their attempts at engagement were interesting with a mixed use of video, typed messages, and photos. Event their avatars were not the typical company logo or headshot, but in the end they were ready to toss in the towel, frustrated, thinking that social media was an area that their company was not fit for.

As a practitioner, I'm always disheartened when I hear people bad mouth social media due to their bad experiences. More often than not it's not the medium that is at fault, but rather in how it's used, but that's harder to explain to someone then most would think. Think about it, how often do you want to be told "you're doing it wrong"?

Linked Network Strategy

Failed social media efforts can be frustrating.

When I look at social networks, and most practitioners will agree, they are merely extensions of what you are. Whether you're selling products or offering services, social profiles are just an extension of engagement, and each platform offers unique opportunities for you to engage with your followers in interesting ways.

What I am seeing more often is profiles such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and a number of others all displaying the same information. Using tools like Ping.fm or some of the third party tools where you can multi-message across all your platforms, users are simply blasting the same information and not understanding the platforms purpose and strengths. This is not to say that you can never use a multi-message network, but like anything else, a time and a place.

I always advise clients that supporters need to be given a reason to follow you on multiple platforms. If they get the same information no matter where they are following you, then there's little reason for them to follow you in more than one or two places. This is counter productive to growing your community and fan base because at some point you will level out and engagement may not be what is expected. If numbers are what is important to the overall goal, than those will also level out and their may be a disproportinate amount on one network compared to the others.

The point in all this being, is give people a reason to follow you based on the strength of the network. Is your company providing strategy for each network or have you achieved little since you started building your presence online?
Others shared their words at the end of last year just before we transitioned into the new one. I'm a big fan of identifying goals for the new year and filtering your goals into three simple words is a very easy way to categorize your efforts.

I'd like to consider myself a person of action so I want to share my action words for 2011. Action words for me are goals that have a clear and direct effect on any and all efforts that I give energy to. While I felt 2010 was a fun year, it was not as fulfilling as I would have liked, which is why I'm focusing on action for 2011.

NETWORKING

Last year, for one reason or another, I interacted and networked in real life less than I normally do. The gradual decline came about mid-way through the year due to some personal events that popped up. This year I plan to getting myself out there and interacting with my real life contacts. Online networking comes easy, the tools available make it possible day in and day out, but the value or real life networking and meeting some of those valuable contacts is priceless.

SPEAKING
I had a fun time at the speaking engagements I was asked to be a part of last year. This year I look to continue this trend, but more specifically, extend my presence by speaking to groups that I would not normally target. The idea of marketing, customer service, and the familiarity with the changing world of online tools is vital to all industries. I look forward to extend my network and availability for speaking engagements.

LAUGHING
Odd as it may sound, I want to laugh more. It's easy to get so caught up in the importance of to-do lists and responsibility that it's easy to forget the simple things. Laughing has been such a vital part of my life, with family, friends, at events, and all points in between, and it's something I feel we can't get enough of. So be sure that in all you do, that you find time to laugh.

Think on some of the things you're planning for 2011. Do you have any advice for me as it relates to the three action words I've shared?
That made me stop and think about every new year and how everyone supposedly wants to do better, make more money, have more opportunity, do things differently, and a number of other similar life changing decisions. Every year it's the same, which means the end of every year a great many of us feel like we've neither moved forward or achieved what we intended.

Hype or Hope?

Well no doubt there's a lot of hype at the ending of one year and the beginning of the next. Everyone claims to have the secret to success, the next game changing product or service that a person needs to make the next year the best ever.

I personally believe that while hype surrounds the ushering of a new year, that hope is something we never lose. Hope is what continues to drive us to achieve something greater, overcome obstacles, and even take risks where we otherwise would have played it safe.

There's a lot of opportunity for you in 2011, but only you have the power to realize it. Keep hope alive, don't give into the hype and know where you can grow. I'd like to know where you stand on the "hype or hope" idea for the beginning for a new year.

Lifelong Challenge: Conquering Fear

As a participant of NaPodPoMo (National Podcasting Post Month), I'm challenged to come up with ideas for topics of discussion every day for the entire month of November. While not necessarily a staggering challenge, there are challenges in life that I feel a great many of us avoid tackling head on. Recently I posted a podcast (you can listen below) that dealt with challenging your fears, overcoming obstacles and being the hero in your own story.

Fear makes us human, but conquering it makes us a success!

Success in Small Steps

I challenged all of my listeners this week to choose one of their fears, and attempt to conquer it. It may not happen in a week or in a month, but identifying what is keeping you from moving forward and overcoming is the only way we can grow. I am definitely no exception. Many of my fears may seem unfounded and silly, but don't the majority of these fears fall into this category? Many of the fears we adopt are behaviors that have been taught to us either socially or academically. This makes them essentially self imposed, and they are hard to shake.

Look at some of the basic fears you have, maybe it's a fear of public speaking, a fear of letting people down, a fear of being accepted, take your pick. Try to take reasonable steps to erase those fears and conquer them one at a time.

Fear can catapult us to do great things, make great strides in what would otherwise be a mundane situation. I invite you to journey with me on taking on these fears and be a hero to yourself and establish new boundaries where none existed before.

The choice is yours!
I tackle 30 days of podcasting throughout the month of November and release a recording every day. I'm experimenting with a few tools and enjoying the heck out of it. It's just me and some random thoughts, and so far I'm learning a few tricks with audio and editing music.

Here's my day 3 post, and I'll probably be sharing on here, but if you're looking at getting updated when I post directly from Cinch, you can subscribe to the RSS here or in the player below.
Whether it's marketing, social media, content creation, self development, it all comes down to relationships and I wanted to share this video, which has become a favorite of mine.

We're all hard wired with the same basic love and want to be part of something bigger than we are. Were we wired to lie, mistrust, and live in fear, or is there something more to who we are despite what the outside world has made us.

Some food for thought...
