I'm a fan of history and love to wrap myself in the details, so celebrating America's birthday is something I take to heart. Add on top of that the fact that my dad is still serving in our country's military, I appreciate everything our fighting men and women do day in and day out to ensure that our freedoms stand strong.

Thank you one and all!

What to do with the Freedom of Choice

Now that we closed out another year of celebrating America's independence, what will you do? So many choices, so many opportunities, have you taken the opportunity to do something that you've always wanted to do? Follow a dream, see something to completion, or perhaps start an idea you thought could never work?

"Too often we take our freedom for granted," we've heard that saying so many times. So take ahold of it, and make something happen for yourself.

Despite all the political muckity-muck, America is a wonderful country to live in and I'm proud to be given the opportunity to make big choices. You?

We hear that time and time again, and yet so many instances occur where communication simply fell apart. Can you think back to the most recent situation where a simple adjustment to how a business or friend communicates with you could have avoided a large scale problem from occurring. We've all been caught up in something like this at one point in our lives, and I'm definitely not pointing fingers. What we can learn from a situation like this is priceless.

Communication is Customer Service

With regards to how a business communicates with a customer, it's the cornerstone of good customer service. In a most recent incident today I watched a business's communication lines fall completely apart, resulting in finger pointing and he-said/she-said. The fact that the business assumed they were fixing a situation without consulting with us first made the situation worse, and on top of that, rather then taking full responsibility and offering compensation, they started to play the blame game.

The results? A complete turn-off to any future business dealings in the near future. Will I walk away forever? It's hard to say, I'm always up for giving second chances.

When a company assumes what their customers want, when a business pushes something they think their customers will use, the end result can only end badly. Rather than assume, communicate with them. Hold a focus group, pick up the phone, talk to some of your regulars, it can go a long way.

So now that you've had time to think of a few cases where communication may have fallen apart, what instances would you like to share and how did you resolve it?

Sort of like the gift you've always wanted, but then when you get it, you're not quite sure what to do with it. Relate? Google Wave seemed to interesting to use and the video seemed to make it look like a tool I had to integrate into my processes, but it didn't really solve a problem I had. Like many of us, I was already using Skype for group chat and file sharing, and when not using Skype, email seemed to be a suitable backup. I had actually tossed in the towel when it came to Google Wave.

Integrating Google Wave Into Your Productivity
Two months ago I started noticing some blog posts coming from two media/community leaders that I follow very closely. Chris Brogan began the charge with sharing how he uses Google Wave, and as I read the post, I started to see things a little more clearly. I think I was making it harder than it should have been. Chris never gave up on Google Wave, though he had his criticisms, he effectively conveyed how he had integrated the process into his systems.

Followed by Chris was Shaine Mata, from South Texas, who is an early adopter to new online tools. Some times things work for him, and some times not, but when it came to Google Wave, he really caught my attention. Here was another online leader that I respected and read sharing how he was using Google Wave to plan events and manage projects. His detailed posts, with screenshots, inspired me to emulate this processes to determine if Google Wave really was something that was passing me by.

Can You Make Google Wave Work for You?

With a little convincing, I found the use of Google Wave as something that both Skype and email were not doing. The customization and flexibility allowed by Google Wave made managing tasks and projects very easy. I still refer to Chris Brogan's posts as well as Shaine's processes to see if I'm missing anything, but I'm slowly making it my own process. Recently Shaine reviewed a new Google Wave plugin that once again changed the way I was using Wave, so suffice to say, I was sold.

Are you using Google Wave? Are you following others and their use to see if it's something you will integrate into your system. It was a hard sell for me, but what I read made sense; now I'm not looking back. What are some of the things you've been hesitant to adopt that over time you've warmed up to?
From the get-go he struggled being pre-mature, suffering severe seizures, and then having to be connected to a machine 24/7 for the first six months of his life. Defying the odds the doctors gave him and shared with us, he's achieved a huge milestone, and it is that which brings my family to this point where we can celebrate all that he and our family have overcome.

On the outside many do not know what I've gone through day to day. I've maintained my speaking schedule, continue to work with clients on a variety of projects and collaborations, and continue creating content for the various projects I'm a part of. It was a heavy burden to carry and at times would tire me out completely but celebrating this entire year is a triumph that I cannot deny.

Relations to Life

Think of the many things you may have overlooked in life. Whether it's for your business or your personal life. What have you carried with you to success that you've not given yourself credit for? It's not a matter of asking for credit, expecting applause, or asking for gratitude, but rather a celebration of overcoming something that you've struggled with.

From a young age we're taught to be humble and I think as we grow older we tend to down play our successes in order to remain humble. Most of us are afraid to share our successes and triumphs because we see it as bragging. It's a sad state of affairs because there's a huge difference between the two.

Look at your life, where have you triumphed? Celebrate it, revel in it, even if it's just you taking yourself out for something special. But share with your friends and family, and don't down play your efforts. No one can recognize what you do or what you've done if they don't know you've done it.

As I celebrate with my family for all that we've been through to help this little guy achieve his first year of life triumphantly, I hope that you can find something you've achieved and make it a point to appreciate the success. You deserve it!

No matter where you live, at what station in life you're in, or what income level you reside in, opportunities come to us and leave us, it's all a matter of making a decision. Most recently I've been adjusting to some very major changes in my life, moving into a new home, adjusting my professional career, balancing the work/life situation (something I think we all try to do).

When was the last time you evaluated your goals? Where are you going, where have you been, and have you adjusted course accordingly?

I find it interesting that many close to me are at this point in their life as well. Perhaps it's an cyclical age thing that we hit every so many years, or perhaps it just ensuring that that we do not sacrifice what we want for the sake of an unsatisfying career choice. Whatever the case may be, whether you're doing it personally, or for your business, take the time to reevaluate the goals you're after.

I wouldn't suggest a bucket list, I think that list is for the dreams and wishes we hope to one day achieve (very broad), but rather a more focused and targeted goal list with definite timelines of when you wish to reach them. At one point I thought I was going to to animation school, when suddenly life through me into another form of media entertainment. At another point in my life I thought I would go for my MBA, but later realized that the fulfillment of that goal would not get me any closer to what I really wanted out of life, so I adjusted accordingly.

We as humans connect emotionally, experiences link us together no matter language, background, or level of wealth. We all go through the same things, some at different times, some in different ways, but essentially we are all one people.

Such is the case right now after a devastating tornado touched down in Yazoo City, MS. As with most natural disasters there was destruction and notably deaths. A dear friend of mine, Holly Hoffman, notified me that a friend of hers had family that was struck by this tragedy and has lost everything. I turn to you the community to not only make you aware, but perhaps you or someone you know can help.

Kendra Kinnison is reaching out via Twitter and to as many people as possible, and because I love Holly and have met Kendra and know her to be a good natured, kind hearted person who would do the same for someone else, I want to see if we can't help get things going for Kendra's family.

Kendra's family had an antique store, most of which is gone, but the few remaining items are up for grabs. Every little bit counts, and the asking amount is not high. Perhaps you know someone who needs a special gift, or maybe you're looking to add something to your collection.

Be sure to follow Kendra on Twitter and take a look at the pictures she's posting. If you are unable to support financially extend your prayers, well wishes and support to her and her family during this time of rebuilding.

Thanks community!

Sure that's a large part of why people go, but for some, it's the one to one relationships that are built and started that really make the conference a cut above the rest.

Most recently in my experience at SXSW, the panels were lackluster, and more conversation was being held in the halls and in ad hoc sessions. I met some online contacts that I had never met in person, was able to interview them and gain their perspective on a few things, all the while enjoying some of the surrounding events of Southby to flesh out the experience.

One such experience was the book signing of Chris Brogan for his new book, "Social Media 101" and "Engage" from Brian Solis. Not only did I get a one on one, but I got my books signed by people that I really look up to. These community leaders are not egoists, but rather, look to create a fire amongst their fans to create their own communities based on the passions they have.

So now that I got my reading material, here's a question I have for you. What are you doing to build communities or extend yourself into new online realms? Let me know and while you're at it, how can I help you achieve that?

Shot by Chris Brogan

Luis Sandoval Jr and Jennifer Navarette Interview Tungle
Originally uploaded by Chris Brogan
For those that wonder what else I do in the social space, I am Executive Producer and Co-host for a podcast called Tech in Twenty. At SXSW we had the honor of checking in with a company called Tungle that looks to kick our calendars into overdrive with some unique approaches in how we interact with one another, but also how our busy schedules interact with one another.

While we were filming on the TechSet setup inside the Bloggers Lounge, we were surprisingly approached by Chris Brogan and shot. Yep, he shot us, and I gotta say, it hurt less than I thought, and I think less than I should. So take that for what it's worth.

Thanks Chris for being out and about and capturing some amazing shots of as many people as you could. If there was a Foursquare for photobugs, then you'd win all the badges.

Hmmmm....a Foursquare-like app for photobugs? I can’t say I’m surprised, perhaps disappointed is a better word. Recently, attending SXSW, I’ve noticed that it’s becoming more and more prevalent. Again, nothing new. The concept of “eye candy” is not something that just started this year, it’s been a marketing tactic for brands for a number of years. For some it works, for others it just feels out of place.

The “eye candy” I speak of typically presents itself in the form of a scantily clad woman sharing her “goods” with the world as she attempts to get you to see something, hand something to you, or attract you to a booth, table, session, or vendor on the street. To say that these women are not attractive would be a lie (I am human after all), but the larger issue is the old tactics being used in a new industry, one still growing and looking to gain its footing as an accepted professional practice.

Already Enough Hurdles for New Media

New media already has enough barriers and hurdles to overcome without being attached to the cheap marketing tactics of a few knuckleheads that think breasts and backsides will seal the deal. Of course I can’t fault them entirely, there’s still a great many of us (men) who will blindly accept and follow the half dressed woman to wherever she wants us to go.

But here’s a big tip guys, and this comes from someone who researches the industry, notices trends and can appreciate creative marketing strategies, the world of technology is no longer a playground dominated by males. The days of selling tech, media, or any cool gadget to a lonely geek are over. Say hello to our female counterparts that are not taking the new media industry by storm.

Just in my short time at SXSW 2010, I’ve noticed the predominance of woman. Now I’d like to see some stats on attendance numbers, but I’m sure the gap has been closing year after year. The idea of using a half dressed woman to promote any product to an audience now including large numbers of women seems outdated, out of place, and out of your mind.

So here’s a message to Mr. Marketer, clean up your act if you go to a trade show, a conference, or you’re presenting on an expo floor. Leave the hot pants and tube tops at home and start thinking of creative ways to attract a mixed gender audience because I got a secret for ya, the women are here to stay.
A night of stars like only the Lone Star State can do it. Social Media professionals from around the state were awarded for their strong efforts to make a difference in the industry they are in. Whether it’s a non-profit, corporate environment, start-up, an educational facility, or just to effect change, the awarded came from a wide variety of industries, but all of them fight the good fight of enacting a community of brands to get social.

Thanks to the Austin American Statesman, the Texas Social Media Awards was a big hit and a night where the awarded had the time to shine bright. For them it was an honor to be recognized for the hard work they do, but the real winners are the communities that are touched by these individuals.

Make sure you review the full listing of those awarded and extend a them a hand of congrats. Another year has come and gone and now it’s time for a whole new year of movers and shakers to make their mark for all the right reasons and enact their communities do make a difference.

A huge congrats from the Daily Slackr to all the award winners, good luck in your future efforts and I look forward following all that you are doing.

It's a big tech/media/social event in Central Texas that I try not to pass up. For me, it's the only time I'll see some of the amazing people I've met online. I hope to change that in time, but for now, with all the panel sessions, expo floor participants, and late evening get togethers, it's a wonder if I'll get any sleep during the next week.

Nevertheless, it's bound to be a good time. I'm looking forward to meeting many of you out in the real world. I've got plenty of hand shaking and laughing to go around and as I work on solidifying existing relationships, it's the new ones that I'm always aware of. I'll be able to chat with people that inspire me and help me define my own goals by what they write or say.

If you're going to SXSW for the first time, or you've been in the past, what are you most excited about? Leave a comment below, I'd love to see what you're hoping to walk away with by the end of the conference.
There's a lot going on and I thought I'd share some of what's on my radar already and perhaps we can connect. I meet a lot of people at the conferences, Tweetups, Meetups, and all places in between that are truly amazing in their own right, and I want to meet more.

Got a story to share? Something you'd like to say? Maybe you'd like to be featured on the Tech in Twenty podcast? All of this possible, but let's shake hands and share a cup of coffee, a bottle of water, or a bite to eat.

This is where you can find me.

Innotech San Antonio (it's done and over with, great presenting, created a lot of content, had lots of fun in the Social Media Lounge. Thanks to Brewing Media for that sponsorship)

RISE Austin (featured speaker, in town for a few hours if you'd like to get together)

SXSW (I'm in all through interactive, we'll be recording for SXSWi so let's meetup somewhere)

OASIS (teaching class)

Northside Chamber of Commerce TBA (featured speaker along with Jennifer Navarrete)

As much as I love my digital relationships, I love turning them into real live connections. Looking forward to meeting you all!

The Other Half Time Show: Behind the Scenes

Thanks to an amazing effort by Alan Weinkrantz and all of the organizers who helped make this event happen, the Twitter Jam Bad rocked the house for The Other Half Time Show. After the Super Bowl's opening act, The Who, the Twitter Jam Band played their set raising money for Hugs4Holly.

Using community efforts and social media for social good, this event was organized and put on without the multi-million dollar budget of the NFL. This singular cause was broadcasted on Ustream to the entire world and the world was indeed watching. Donations were coming in from around the US with viewers from as far as Europe and some from South America.

I had the opportunity to be an organizer which I was happy to support. While I was there, prior to the show, I recorded some practice sessions and behind the scenes planning to share with all of you.
For an entire season football fanatics have awaited the mega-event of the year in the NFL. Super Bowl Sunday has arrived and while millions of millions of people around the world will be tuning, there are many more that have an opportunity to make a difference in one person's life.

Today's NFL halftime show is going to feature The Who, playing the songs of old that a great many of us know, remember, and cherish. While that halftime show is all well and good, local PR specialist and new media leader has brought a social cause into the lime light by supporting it with his efforts to bring social media into the realm of social good. Alan Weinkrantz of Weinkrantz & Co. has created an effort called The Other Halftime Show which will focus on a specific cause every year. This year's inaugural launch will be focusing on Hugs4Holly.

Fundraising for Hugs4Holly

Hugs4Holly is a cause that Alan Weinkrantz and the local San Antonio community has turned to support in an effort to save a woman's life in need of a double lung transplant. Due to unique circumstances, Holly is in desperate need of this transplant, and with the support of her husband and the community, they are looking to raise $100,000.

The Other Halftime Show's efforts will focus on raising money during the Super Bowl's regularly scheduled halftime show. Five minutes after The Who leave the stage, The Other Halftime Show's own musical group, the Twitter Jam Band will broadcast live via Ustream to bring awareness to this cause and hopefully help in raising the funds needed for the transplant.

So instead of indulging in highlight after highlight, during the halftime show, why not tune in to The Other Halftime Show and do something good to help someone live better.

If you're looking for some ways to broadcast the information to as many people as possible, here is a comprehensive list of where the information has been posted and we hope that you can share these links with your internet communities.

A special thanks to one of the organizers, Jennifer Navarrete, for putting this list together:
It was a business meeting of sorts, but mostly it was also an introductory meeting since I am a huge fan of what they do and wanted to find a way for the show I co-host, Tech in Twenty, and her company to work together on a few projects. Pesonally, her story is amazing, the success of her company unparrallel, and the outlook is outstanding. All of it coming not just from hard work but from believing in yourself.

Tips to Boost Your Confidence

There's a lot to be said about confidence. It can open doors, attract the right people, and help you scale great mountains with ease. Confidence, not to be confused with being cocky, is a trait that entrepreneurs and business owners should have. So here are a couple of tips for you to build that confidence:

Take action. If something comes up, make it actionable and do it NOW.

Face your Fears. Face them with the knowledge you need to overcome them.

Understand the journey to your destination.

Always be prepared.

Understand failure is okay.

Be open to expanding your network.

These tips alone sound simple enough, but over the course of the next few weeks I'll be exploring them and hopefully help some of you become more open and willing to take the calculated risks necessary to get yourself out there.

What Magaly did with Swebapps was a risk, though planned, there was no promise of success at the end, it was worked for. She's still working for it now and everyone in her network is rooting for her.

*On a side note, Swebapps is also in the running for the Rackspace Cloud contest for best company in the cloud. Watch their video and scroll down to vote for them. Voting ends tomorrow. Congrats to Magaly and her entire team for being bold and making this video.

WATCH SWEBAPPS VIDEO AND VOTE HERE!
Consider this a blogging 101 for those looking at starting a blog or at least understanding what they can do for their blog. I've known many people who start a blog not really understanding what else they can do with the content they are creating.

This post along with part II will highlight some common questions I get via email or have come across during the various presentations I've done.

What is a blog?
A blog is a webpage that is updated frequently by a user who looks to share a story or insight on a particular topic that interests them or have experience in. The stories can be short, or if long have a URL that links to the longer story.

Is blogging free?
Blogging is absolutely free. Whether you blog for yourself or you blog for a company, the tools you can use are easily accessible and offer a wide variety of resources. Tools such as WordPress, TypePad, and Blogger are web based tools that simply require a login and password, a quick profile setup, and a template setup and you’re ready to go.

What’s a template?
A template is the look and feel for your blog. The template is what people will see when they come to your site, and where you writing will rest. Standard templates are offered through the variety of free blog sites mentioned above, but you can also purchase exclusive designs for your blog to give it a unique look.

How are blogs used?
Blogs are like online diaries, an introspective look into a person’s life or knowledge base. The sites are setup to interact with readers, and provide readers a chance to comment on a writer’s musings.

Examples of how blogs can be used:
Personal diaries
News feeds
Hourly, daily, weekly updates of Web sites
New information on a topic
Product updates: reviews, new versions, new products
This day in history
Birthdays and other special events

Do I have to use the free tools to create a blog?
The free tools are just options for you if you are looking at getting started quickly. If you’d rather build your own site, then you’d have to purchase a domain name and have a hosting company host your site.

What tools do I use to post to my blog?
If you’ve gone the free tool route, you can post through their web based application. If you’ve gone your own route for example with WordPress, WordPress offers ways to type your blog and post directly using their interface. But there are a variety of tools you can use to get your blog posted from your desktop and browser windows such as ScribeFire, Microsoft LiveBlogger, and Ecto for the Mac. All of them are applications that require installation, but once they are tied to your blog url and servers, they can post directly without any problems, bypassing the use of the program interface offered by the tool of your choice.

Why would I want to use a client tool rather than the blog application?
Client tools offer a wide variety of features that the blog applications do not. The interface of the blog applications are very limited and do not offer the full list of features and ease of use that a client application can offer. Client tools also allow you to work offline rather then being tethered to an internet connection with a blog application.

Can a blog be private?
Absolutely! If you’d rather your blog not be shared with anyone, and utilize it as a personal diary, you can do that as well. Most blog applications offer the user the choice of whether to publish publicly or keep private. If you’re not comfortable sharing your thoughts with the world just yet, this option is definitely for you.

Are comments necessary and why would someone leave one?
Comments are not necessary, you can actually turn the feature off if you do not want people to leave their messages. The idea of comments is for readers to leave constructive, community building commentary, even if it disagrees with what you write to continue the conversation. Debate can be healthy, but it depends on who is leaving the comment and how the bloggers chooses to interact with the community. Most popular websites have healthy conversations in the comments section that take the blog post deeper for a richer understanding.

What is a blog network?
Blog networks are simply a way to submit your blog to be a part of an online community. The way an individual might join a forum to be a part of a community of like minded individuals with a common interest, a blog can be submitted to join a community. Other readers can view your blog and allow the bloggers to link up and possibly drive traffic to one another’s site. It’s meant to be community oriented for the sake of directing traffic to sites where they might have otherwise overlooked.

What is the blogosphere?
The blogosphere is simply the online world of blogs. Every new blog that is created is termed as having been added to the blogosphere. Since its inception the world of blogs has grown dramatically, with over 2,000 blogs being added daily.

I know what a blog is, what’s a vlog and moblog?
Aside from the standard writing format, blogs can be video recordings called vlogs. Applications that allow you to create vlogs are Seesmic and 12Seconds. These tools typically require a camera of some sort and the ability to upload that same video online. On the other hand a moblog is a mobile blog done entirely with your mobile device. Robert Scoble was popular with using moblogs for interviews and other short musings for a period of time. If you’re mobile device can handle picture taking, audio recording, video recording, and texting, you’re set up to be a moblogger.

How do I become a better blogger?
There is no easy answer to this. My recommendation is write, write, write. Write about what you are passionate about, what drives you to live everyday. Those tend to be the most successful people. My second recommendation is to support sites like Bloggin-ads which not only can share with you how to be a better blogger, but also how to monetize your efforts.

What is RSS?
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, and it’s a proven method to inform people of your most recent posts. When you set up your blog account, you’re site will have a specific coding that designates an RSS signal which is picked up by RSS aggregators world wide, alerting people of when there is activity on your site.

What is an aggregator?
Aggregators do exactly what they say, they gather, typically information shared via an RSS feed. A very popular reader tool is Google Reader. Google Readers allows you to setup feeds to come directly to Google Reader to save you time from having to visit each and every site you follow by putting all the updates in one location. If you’re wondering if there is a feed for a specific topic, most readers have a search tool that allows you to find your topic by doing a quick search and adding the feeds you find.

Bringing Great Minds Together

Today I've had a great opportunity to gather with some great minds to work on some projects that I've got going and one that I was brought into. It never fails to surprise me the network that I have, and the types of thought leadership that exist within that network. It is from these individuals that great projects with great outcomes have been born.

I'm curious to know from my readers who they draw inspiration from and if they gather with local leaders to share ideas and lean on one another to start and finish projects. I think it's vital that as much as spend time online, that we not forget the people in our own backyard.

I can say I'm happy to know the people that I know and am always ready, when I'm available, to help them in their endeavors. So share your thoughts in the comments and let me know if you still rely on real world relationships, and also if your real world network has grown due to online engagement.
During these times of transition we see a lot of experimentation, some succeed while some fail, but all in all it's a space that is very fluid and forgiving. This allows for many of us who are exploring this space to go "back to the drawing board" as they say and determine what worked and what didn't and become better than our previous iteration. This forgiveness works for the industry and against it.

Social Media is Not Social Networking
My colleague, Simon Salt of Incslingers, wrote an amazing article on the true differences between what social media is and what social networking is. I am inspired this post and while I cannot give it justice in my own words I highly recommend you read it. What I do want to pull from that post is the idea that while there are distinct differences, more often than not people will confuse the two. Social interactions online already have a bad reputation as being wasteful, for kids, and not effective. Sure there are some shining examples of success in the space, but the overall feeling is one of doubt.

Will this work for me? Is this a something serious I should consider as a strategy for my company?

All good questions that can be answered in a case by case basis since not all outlets are going to be a fit for the brand. But what is different now is that we all exist on a stage where the world is watching.

The World's an Online Stage
More so now than ever, what we say and do can be searched, Google'd, and traced if it's done online. Social functions are not a hotbed of instant reporting as we Tweet, Twitpic, and Facebook minute by minute happenings to our friends and our networks. It's important now more than ever that we as professionals in new media understand that while we're not asking for perfection, those new and curious about stepping out into social platforms are being given prime examples of relevant and noteworthy information.

Perhaps we forget sometimes that new media is not something that is widely accepted as standard practice. Too many still feel like YouTube is a place where kids in skateboards record videos of themselves falling, and that Twitter is just a place for sharing what you had for breakfast. For those of us that know better, it's up to us to lead as examples of new media can do.

Just food for thought, something that was just on my mind. I'd like to hear your first experiences with social and new media. Were you given good examples of how it worked? Were you one of those thought it was just for kids? I'd like to hear about your introductions to the space.
This relationship can be hard to maintain and sometimes feel like a tug of war on certain days. Still, a blogger that allows themselves to lose the fight will find themselves alone, their message not getting to a single person except for the occasional web surfer that might find their site.

So how do you tackle this? What are some ideas that make viewers want to come to you as the source for information? I hope to answer these questions for you by explaining the tools and techniques of live blogging.

What is live blogging?

For the uninitiated, live blogging is a technique where a writer will share with readers live, on the scene information, typical of a standard journalist covering a story. Unlike a journalist who will take their story back to the newsroom, and begin to form their article, you, the blogger, will do this on the fly as the information is being shared. Live blogging may not be Pulitzer Prize writing, but if you’re looking to share information as quickly as possible, and direct people to your blog, then live blogging will be the best thing you can do for your readers.

Not just anyone can live blog though. If you’re a finger-typer (you know one…letter…at…a…time…), vaya con Dios, live blogging may not be up your alley. If you’ve got suitable typing skills then start live blogging right now!

What do I live blog?

Just about anything can be live blogged though I wouldn’t recommend you live blog your eating habits, laundry list, or the event occurring while you wait for the doctor. Rather, think of the conferences and meetings you go to. Whether it’s a big national event like BlogWorld, Gnomedex, or any other professional conference, or perhaps a small event like a city council meeting, hometown political rally or even a sporting event.

Taking the time to capture your observations and perhaps some photos can do your blog a lot of credit, and users who are interested will be drawn to your updates. Because it’s live, they know to refresh the page often or keep their RSS Feed reader open because updates will be coming fast and furious. If they can’t make it, or they can’t watch it, they will be happy that someone is providing for them, and that kind of satisfaction can go a long way for you.

Tools for live blogging!

For starters a laptop with an Internet connection is a good start. I use Firefox as my browser of choice and I’ve installed Tweetdeck which allows me to keep track of up to ten topics in their own column for easy, at-a-glance overview of what's happening.

I’ve also installed ScribeFire, which is a blogging tool that integrates right into your Firefox browser window without having to open a tab or leave a page to log into. ScribeFire will post to almost any existing blog, and with all the tools at your fingers tips, only taking half the screen (adjustable), it’s hard to beat.

Finally I take with me a small digital camera that I can instantly upload pics with, if you have a camera that takes pics and sends them wirelessly to your online storage site of choice, that would work even better. Still, with plug in camera I’m able to do quick work of ensuring pics are good quality, uploaded and re-sized quickly thanks to Pixenate. If your'e looking to record video, I highly recommend the Flip.

All of these tools together allow me to live blog fairly quickly and keep people informed. Live blogging keeps your content fresh and up to the minute and by advertising your efforts prior to the event, you’re sure to get people on board with your blog site.
Let me know if you’re a live blogger and what tools you use!

Bloggers Unite for Haiti Relief

If you're looking for a way to make an impact in the world around you, Bloggers Unite has always been a worthwhile cause, especially since...well you're a blogger. I woke up this morning with a notification that Bloggers Unite is looking for a few good writers to help with the relief in Haiti. If you look to the right hand side of this article you'll see a little widget in support of this cause.

Whether you joined the texting campaign or if you'd like to get your community to support the relief in this way, do something to help the millions upon millions affected by this horrendous natural disaster.

I've shown my support, why not get a widget for your site and show your support. If you need the code for the widget, let me know, I'd be happy to share it with you.

Top 10 Blog Promoting Techniques, Part II

I got a lot of really good feedback in the comments section, on Twitter, and on some personal messages on Facebook. A lot of you are really excited to push your content out, especially if you're involved in the 100 blogs for 100 days challenge. Creating content and refreshing your site is definitely key to having your site constantly crawled, but that alone won't draw readers.

So here is the second part of tips to promote your blog with some explanations. Perhaps one of these or more of these are exactly what you need to attract a new audience. If you've got some ideas add them to the comments section below and let's see what the community thinks!

If you missed the first part. Here it is.

Signatures

If you’re online as much as I am, you’re probably sending hundreds of emails out a day. A simple way to keep what you do visible at all times is to make sure that your blog is everywhere you are. I include the URL to my blog in my email signatures, so everytime I send something, the link is visible to those who read it. I also make sure that when I join forums that my signature contains what I do, because I want to make sure people know where they can find me or read more on what I do.

Taking this concept to the physical world, I make sure that anything that I pass to co-workers, new business partners, or friends has my branded information on it. Business cards, flyers, and other promotional material are just some ideas for you to think of. By putting yourself out there you increase the chances that someone will come across your information.

Thought Leadership

Leadership is a great skill to have, but not everyone has it. I’ve excelled in being able to host events and organize large events to bring like minded creative individuals together. I’ve been able to put on several camps like Barcamp, Social Media Camp, Podcamp, and I’ll be sponsoring Green Camp and putting together my city’s first Freelance Camp. By putting yourself out there and taking charge within your community, you build interest, and before long people will ask you what you do. Gladly share with them what you do and where they can find you and you’ll increase your traffic and visibility.

Real World Networks

It’s not always who you know online, sometimes it’s who you know in real life. Never forget what life was like before the internet, and the ability of social networks. Chances are you know someone who can help you get some exposure and perhaps as a result some traffic to what you do. For example, I happen to know people who write various newsletters, work for the newspaper, and even people who can invite me to speak in local seminars, class rooms, and other public settings. I make sure to take advantage of every opportunity I have.

Two days ago I was in the paper, on the front page of the business section sharing what I do, along with six other people. I just happened to come across someone who was writing a piece on media mavens in our city and I made sure to show him what I did, I was not shy about it, and I end up being in the article along with a few others I recommended. That alone has gotten me several phone calls for consultations, but it’s a small example of how real world networks can be just as important.

Word of Mouth Advertising

Word of mouth is probably the best way any product, brand, or person can get great press. Typically by providing something worthwhile or doing something noteworthy, people will share what the news is with others giving you the opportunity to capitalize on this.

Writing a good post will leave people thinking, and perhaps carry their thoughts into real world conversation. Through this conversation they might influence someone to visit your site and read what the person had spoken about and you’ve just increased your traffic number by one. Multiply that by the hundreds of readers you have, and if they all share that info with several of their friends you can see how word of mouth can increase your traffic exponentially.

Contests/Giveaways

And finally, a sure fire way to get traffic, give something away. I’ve seen sites give away memberships to exclusive areas to their site, computers, software, coupons, and other merchandise. Depending on what you can offer, readers will surely come to your site if you’re providing them something they want. Sweeten the deal by making sure they interact and leave commentary on your site by making that a part of “rules.”

Word of warning, don’t base your sole existence online due to giveaways. You want to be able to sustain your traffic because of the quality of your work, but sometimes shaking things up is a good thing.

So there you have it, the 10 best ways to promote your site quickly, freely, and efficiently. I’d love to hear what other things you do to get the word out for your site!

The Heart of Community in Social Media Club San Antonio

As co-founder of the local Social Media Club, it's always amazing to see the minds we have in our city. Some will say that our city is laid back, moves at its own pace, is perhaps even boring, and at times I feel like that, but I came from L.A. before I came to San Antonio. Nevertheless, beneath the exterior that so many presume, are the minds of amazing individuals each doing something in their own way to progress not just themselves, but rather everyone around them. The benefits felt from this time of cohesion are immense, but even more so when they openly share ideas for others to grow just as they did.

Tonight's Social Media Club meeting was one of those nights where the heart of our community shined through and everyone was better for it. Tonight's meeting was called "Brain Jam" and focused on users sharing their project, idea, or problem, and then the community having five minutes to share their solutions and approaches.

The interaction was unbeatable. There was no fear, only excitement, enthusiasm and action items. I truly feel that everyone that left there had something in their mind to accomplish, and everyone who shared really defined what it means to be in a community of supporters.

Building Community is More than Social Networks
My cohort and confidant in Social Media Club is Jennifer Navarrete, she is the one who brought me on this journey, and we're both encouraging others to see social media as something beyond the computer screen, and beyond the social networks. Going to real world events like our event tonight or the many social events throughout the year are great example of getting out the door and meeting people. We should all be so lucky to surround ourselves with people that edify one another, helping us reach our true potential.

I'm happy to be a part of this group, and I'm even more proud of the people that turned out tonight. A huge thanks to Cambria Suites for hosting us, they offered a great spread and really went out for us. If you want to catch what happened at our meeting tonight, follow the hash tag #smcsa. You'll find a link to the Ustream account via the hash tag and perhaps you can share some ideas for our presenters in the comment section below.

Top 10 Blog Promoting Techniques, Part I

Driving traffic to your blog is the entire reason why you started in the first place. You began writing with the intention of sharing your thoughts with the world, and perhaps even provide assistance, guidance, or information to those that would come across your well spent efforts.

Today I will share with you the 10 best ways I have come across to expose your blog to a wide variety of readers, and possibly even share your thoughts beyond those in your network.

Commenting
This is an easy one, and perhaps something you already do. People who write posts enjoy getting feedback from their readership. Having someone leave commentary on their work provides them another level of interaction.

Leaving comments allows you to share your thoughts, but also allows you to leave your name and your website address. Now this will vary from blog to blog depending on their commenting system, but it’s worth the effort. Don’t be surprised to see the writer from the blog you visited on your site, and if your commentary was worthwhile, perhaps some of the readers will make their way over as well.

Link Love
Don’t be afraid to give credit where credit is due. If you’re expanding on an idea that you came across, share where you got the original idea. Providing links to businesses, other bloggers, person’s of interest are all useful and will provide you some benefits in return. It shows that you are aware of others and that you’re giving proper attribution. By making your readers aware of another site or blogger, they in turn might do the same for you for their readership. It’s not necessarily a guaranteed solution, but it’s good practice as a blogger.

Guest Post
This allows you to extend the influence of your brand. You may be writing for another person’s blog, but do not doubt that the owner of that blog will promote you with either an announcement at the beginning of the post or at the end. This gives readers the opportunity to see what you’ve done on your own site and perhaps give you some permanent readers.

Social Networks
A common ratio to follow is 70% interaction 30% pimp. Thirty percent of the time that you interact online can be the time that you pimp your site, your posts, or your business. On sites like Twitter and FriendFeed you can reach hundreds if not thousands, especially depending on the size of your network. On Facebook you can set up entire Facebook Pages to promote what you do and build a community (fanbase) around that.

Blog Networks
I have not had much success with blog networks, but that’s not to say that you won’t. I belong to a few such as Blog Catalog, but I find too much “spamming” promotion going on and not enough community building. Bloggers simply blast what they do and what they want you to read and quite frankly it turns me off.

Blog Networks also allow you to create badges that you can place on your site that will help to share traffic within the network. This can be useful in building a community tied to a specific niche, or looking for your site specifically. If you can find the right group of solid people, they can help you grow, and you help them grow in return.

Well that sums up the first part of a two part series on the 10 best ways to promote your blog. Give these a try and let us know how it has impacted your site. By working together as a blogging community I am sure we can help each other with advice and guidance on some of these issues.
Many will argue that the weight of an article is less than that of a traditionally schooled writer, but those lines have long since blurred and been crossed. Today anyone has access to writing content and publishing it online for the world to read. Is all of it worthwhile? That's debatable, but suffice to say, the boundaries that once kept the word crafting to the professionals has been torn down and we are all now publishers in our own right.

Unlock Confusion with an Elevator Pitch

In our rush to become publishers have we taken the time to define what we're writing, for whom we are writing for and to what end? This is where the fundamental concept of the elevator pitch comes in. Much like it's traditional counterpart, the elevator pitch for a blogger is simply a concise explanation of your content, your purpose and your goals. In a matter of seconds you should be capable of sharing what is you do to someone who has never met you or come across your content.

I highly encourage bloggers to take the time to look at what they are doing. Whether you're new or a veteran blogger, if you've not had the time to craft an elevator pitch, do so. It will save time from having to repeat yourself or confuse your listener as you shoot in the dark for the "best ways" to explain your blog.

Why not share your pitch in the comments section with a link to your site. I'd like to see what you all have come up with.

Business Opportunity - SXSW Proposition

SXSW is just around the corner. Many of you might be saying that March is still a ways off, but it'll come quicker than we think. In that time many of us are preparing to attend the extravaganza that is SXSW. A place where new media, social media, interactive media and all media in between can gather for a week of innovation, collaboration, and conversation. The panels, the hallway discussions, the get together, simply amazing. I mean let's face it, there aren't many times during the year, aside from Blog World Expo perhaps, where all the greatest minds and thought leaders come together to converge on topics involving engagement on a media platform.

Last year was my first experience at SXSW, it was a minor one, but the ability to connect with people from around the world at this one event, throughout all the panels, was unparallel. So this year I wanted to extend an offer to the general online community.

The SXSW 2010 Proposition

This year I'm looking for a company that is seeking exposure. As a new media professional I'll be blogging, podcasting, vidcasting, possibly live streaming, and making appearance at a lot of the after parties. I'd like to promote your brand. How you ask? I'll wear shirts, hats, shoes, thongs, you name it, with your logo on it. I'll make mentions on all my recordings, and provide for you a platform to be scene.

Need me to pass out schwag? I can do that too! On the show room floor, between panels, at the after parties, give me your message, and I shall be your messenger.

I'll be blogging on this site along with bits and pieces on www.crenk.com, and www.lostintechnology.com. I'll also be recording content for YouTube, Ustream, and Utterli. I'll be recording on Blog Talk Radio for the Tech in Twenty podcast which was ranked one of the top 50 Social Media podcasts to listen to by Small Business Trends Radio. We also got great mention in the San Antonio Express News and the San Antonio Business Journal.

If you're looking at getting exposure for your brand, let's connect, I believe I'm your guy!

Contact me via email at getsocial [at] techintwenty [dot] com or reach out to me on Twitter: @luissandovaljr. I'm looking forward to seeing how I can help your brand at this event and possibly future events.
