eBay Chairman Paul Pressler has rejected an unsolicited $56 billion takeover bid from GameStop, describing the $125-per-share offer as lacking credibility and attractiveness. End-to-End Encryption Finally Arrives for iPhone-to-Android Texts

EU Browser Rules Deliver Millions of New Firefox Users

Spotify Launches “Party of the Year(s)” for Its 20th Anniversary

As part of mobile payment service Venmo’s redesign, it is now possible to private posts, making them visible only to the sender and recipient, only to friends, or the old way, which was available to the public. Dollar amounts will be hidden on any public posts. New users will select privacy options during onboarding and existing users can tweak visibility in settings. Also, a Venmo feed redesign will roll out in stages on iOS and Android over the coming weeks. The feed changes include more and larger image options, reactions, and quick actions like “Say Thanks” and “Pay Again”.

On Monday, OpenAI announced the European Union will have access to its latest model, GPT-5.5-Cyber. The model will be available to the EU AI office, governments, cyber authorities, and some businesses. The EU and Anthropic have conducted several discussions over Mythos access, but the model has not yet been made available to the bloc.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports Apple will address issues with Liquid Glass on macOS 26 with a “slight redesign”. Gurman says the update is “more of a cleanup and refinement effort” as part of a polish pass and will fix the wonky behaviour with shadows and transparency. Gurman’s newsletter also notes Liquid Glass is not going away.

Pizza chain Papa Johns is testing food delivery with Alphabet’s drone company Wing. The test is limited to a section of southern North Carolina and only includes three sandwich options and zero pizzas. Wing CEO Adam Woodworth told Wired that since pizza boxes have “a big, flat surface area” it makes them not particularly aerodynamic. Woodworth highlighted how no one is interested in a tilted pizza. Wing has existing partnerships with DoorDash, Panera, and Walmart in Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Houston.

Variety reports pop star Dua Lipa is suing Samsung over unauthorized commercial use of a copyrighted photograph of her used on Samsung’s tv packaging. The lawsuit alleges the singer contacted Samsung to request removal of her image from packaging and the response was “dismissive and callous”, with the company refusing to change the image. Samsung has yet to comment on the suit.

An ad-free TikTok experience will be available to UK users 18-and-up, rolling out over the coming months. The subscription service costs £4 per month, approximately $5.50 USD. There are no other perks for the app included with the subscription, just ad removal. No information yet on whether the feature will expand to the US. Last fall Meta made a similar subscription service available in the UK for Facebook and Instagram for £3 per month, approximately $4 USD.

In a report from the Google Threat Intelligence Group, the GTIG identified and patched a zero-day exploit developed with AI that was planned to be used in a “mass exploitation event”. The exploit for an unnamed open source web admin tool could have bypassed two-factor authentication. The GTIG believes the Python code for the exploit was generated using LLMs, pointing to “including a hallucinated CVSS score” and other typical LLM training data examples.

Discord announced an update to Nitro subscriptions called Nitro Rewards. Nitro Rewards have no additional fees and now include access to the starter edition of Xbox Game Pass, as well as discounts with Logitech, SteelSeries, and KontrolFreek. Discord’s Nitro Rewards page says availability is rolling out to eligible members “over the coming weeks”. Nitro Basic and Classic subscribers are not eligible, and perk availability will vary by region. Discord Nitro — which offers users larger uploads, the ability to use emojis across servers, and HD streaming — is $9.99 per month or $99.99 a year.

Apple and Intel reportedly reach preliminary chip manufacturing deal
The Wall Street Journal reports Apple and Intel have reached a preliminary agreement for Intel to manufacture some Apple chips, following more than a year of discussions and U.S. pressure to strengthen domestic semiconductor production. The deal would help Apple diversify away from TSMC while easing supply constraints, and give Intel a boost as it expands its foundry business.

GM settles over driver data sales, faces new restrictions
General Motors agreed to pay $12.75 million after being accused of selling drivers’ location and driving behavior data from its OnStar system to data brokers without consent between 2020 and 2024. The data reportedly generated about $20 million in revenue and covered hundreds of thousands of drivers. GM is now banned from selling driving data to brokers for five years.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports Apple testers are “actively using” prototypes of AirPods equipped with cameras. The rumoured AirPod cameras can gather “visual information in low resolution”, rather than take photos or videos, and users can ask Siri about the gathered data. Gurman reports examples like receiving turn-by-turn directions and asking Siri what to cook with ingredients on hand. Due to the cameras the AirPods will look like the Pro 3 but have longer stems and a light to indicate when visual data is actively gathered. The new AirPods could possibly be unveiled in September alongside the improved Siri release.

OpenAI added a Trusted Contact feature for ChatGPT, enabling users to nominate a friend to be notified if a chat sounds like the user is at risk for self-harm. In November 2025 the BBC reported OpenAI said over a million of 800 million weekly users at the time expressed suicidal thoughts in a chat, as some use ChatGPT as a therapist. Nominated Trusted Contacts will have a week to accept an invitation then the user can nominate a different person. OpenAI says the notification process is not automated and a “small team of specially trained people” will review a situation before reaching out.

On Friday Sony presented fourth quarter results, including how sales of the PlayStation 5 fell to 1.5 million in the quarter, down from 2.8 million the previous year, a 46% drop. The PS5 launched in November 2020 and has seen price increases due to global memory chip prices. The company expects gaming profits to rise 30% due to first-party software sales. Sony predicts the financial year results, ending in March 2027, will rise 13%, reaching 1.16 trillion yen, compared to a 1.03 trillion yen from the previous fiscal year report. Sony will also buy back up to 500 billion yen in shares spread out over the next year.

Nintendo announced a price hike for the Switch 2 beginning September 1st, 2026. A Switch 2 in the US will go from $449.99 to $499.99. Canadian prices rise from $629.99 to $679.99. European units jump from €469.99 to €499.99 and in Japan a Switch 2 will rise from ¥49,980 to ¥59,980, a nearly 20% increase. Nintendo of America says “This is in response to various changes in market conditions, which are expected to extend over the medium to long term”. Price increases for other regions are expected to be announced later. Nintendo forecast sales of the Switch 2 to reach 16.5 million units for the fiscal year ending March 31st, 2027, a decline from 19.86 million units in the previous year’s report.

Nvidia purchased $500 million dollars worth of rights for shares in Corning, best known as the Gorilla Glass manufacturer, commonly used with smartphones. Corning pledged to increase capacity of fiber production within the United States by over 50% in order to supply more cables for AI data centers. Corning says the expansion includes constructing new complexes in North Carolina and Texas, expecting to create over 3,000 jobs.

On Thursday Meta launched a challenge over how Ofcom assesses fees and penalties under Britain’s Online Safety Act, arguing against fines being calculated using global revenue instead of within the country with the regulations. A Meta spokesperson said “This would still allow Ofcom to impose the largest fines in UK corporate history.” The challenge is due to be heard in October 2026.

After immediately selling out the first block of Steam Controllers, Valve is implementing a new reservation queue process for the next wave. The queue will open on May 8th at 1pm ET. Customers will be contacted in order then have 72 hours to complete the purchase. Those that previously successfully ordered a controller are ineligible for the queue and new purchases are limited to one per person.

After being teased in March, Google unveiled the Google Fitbit Air, a screenless passive wearable weighing 12 grams with a band and 5.2 grams without. The device can measure heart rate, sleep, detect “signs of AFib with irregular heart rhythm notifications”, and provide data on heart rate variability (HRV). The screenless device has no buttons and can autodetect activities like running, walking, rowing, and other high-heart rate cardio and sport activities. The estimated battery life goes up to a week and a five minute charge can restore a day’s worth of power. A 90 minute charge will bring the battery up to full. The Google Fitbit Air is available for pre-order now for $100 USD, releasing May 26th, and is compatible with most phones on Android 11 or higher and Apple iOS 16.4 or higher.

Google also announced the Fitbit App will be called the Google Health app beginning May 19th. Fitbit data will automatically be available in Google Health and Google Fit users will have the option to migrate data later in 2026. The Google Health App AI-powered trainer, Health Coach, previously tested as Fitbit Health Coach, will be a premium feature for Google Health Premium Subscribers. Fitbit Premium will be called Google Health Premium beginning on May 19th and the annual cost is rising from $79.99 per year to $99.99, though the monthly plan remains stable at $9.99. Premium access will also be included for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in over 30 countries. The free Google Health includes activity, sleep, and health tracking, as well as manual wellness logging, without additional fees.

On Wednesday the European Commission confirmed an agreement on the ‘AI Omnibus’ package of amendments to the Artificial Intelligence Act, including a ban on AI-generated non-consensual intimate images. Dates for AI companies to implement changes to comply with the AI act have been pushed back from August 2026 to December 2027 and standalone high-risk AI systems and select embedded AI products will need to comply by August 2028. Compliance with the ban on AI-generated non-consensual intimate images must be implemented by December 2026.

CNBC’s sources report the European Union is considering restricting member governments from using US cloud providers for sensitive data purposes. A “Tech Sovereignty Package” is expected to be presented by the European Commission on May 27th. The proposal would not entirely prohibit use of overseas cloud platforms by governments, focused instead on limiting use for processing sensitive information like health, financial, and judicial data. Any proposal would need to be approved by all 27 member states.

Wired reports cybersecurity firm RedAccess analyzed thousands of vibe-coded web apps by AI development tools Replit, Base44, Netlify, and Lovable, and found over 5,000 lacked security or authentication of any kind. RedAccess claims anyone with the web URL for the apps have full access to the data or only require an email address to get through. 40% of the apps expose sensitive info like medical and financial data, corporate strategy documents, and logs of conversations with chatbots. A spokesperson from Lovable said “Lovable gives builders the tools to build securely, but how an app is configured is ultimately the creator’s responsibility.”

On Thursday Spotify announced the interactive AI DJ now supports French, German, and Brazilian Portuguese; adding to the previously launched English and Spanish options. The AI DJ provides commentary on songs the platform suggests for users, and features the option to chat with the DJ, including the ability to make requests for songs or make genre changes. The AI DJ is available in over 75 countries, now including Austria, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, South Korea and Switzerland.

And Spotify now offers a command line tool for AI agents like OpenClaw and Claude Code to import AI-created audio summaries and personal podcasts to Spotify. AI-generated audio from platforms like Adobe Acrobat, NotebookLM, and Hero can be imported through the The Save to Spotify CLI, now in beta and available on GitHub. Imported selections will be available within a user’s personal library, but will not be accessible by other Spotify users.

The Wall Street Journal reports Samsung will no longer sell televisions and home appliances in China due to competition from domestic brands and a changing business environment. In a statement Samsung says the company is “reviewing various support measures for business partners”. Sales of smartphones and chips in China will continue.

An IGN commissioned study called ‘Generations In Play: 2026 Audience Insights Report’ examined trends of Gen Z’s media activities. The study, conducted by Kantar and UC Berkeley polled over 5,000 respondents in the UK, US, and Australia, and found 50% of Gen Z users subscribe and unsubscribe from a streaming service just to watch a single title. 62% do not pay full price for video games, 71% don’t buy physical music, and 70% don’t buy physical copies of tv shows or movies. Gen Z is also 13% more likely to attend theatrical releases on opening weekends compared to older demographics.

Diablo IV’s secret Cow Level has finally been discovered, three years after the game’s launch. Diablo and Cow Levels have a storied history, first popping into playable form in Diablo II after all the rumours of one existing in the original Diablo. Diablo III had ‘Not the Cow Level’ as an anniversary event. And now Diablo IV’s cow level can be accessed after a rather lengthy sidequest process. A current rumour claims this new cow level won’t be the only one as the Cow King has a random drop called the ‘Prime Rib’. The item description reads: “A royal cut of beef, with perfect marbling, a majestic texture, and a regal flavor. Such a prime cut would be a worthy offering to anyone, even to a god.”

Meta faces potential DSA fine

The European Commission issued preliminary findings that Meta failed to adequately prevent children under 13 from accessing Facebook and Instagram, potentially breaching the Digital Services Act after a nearly two-year probe. Regulators estimate about 12% of under-13s in the EU use the platforms, while Meta disputes the findings and says new safeguards are coming. If confirmed, penalties could reach up to 6% of global revenue, which was $201 billion in 2025.

Apple plans AI photo editing overhaul

Apple is preparing a major upgrade to photo editing across iPhone, iPad, and Mac, adding on-device AI tools for enhancing, reframing, and extending images. The move follows criticism of its current Clean Up feature and is expected to roll out with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 later this year. The new capabilities will be powered by Apple Intelligence.

Lovable lands on iOS despite App Store crackdown

AI coding tool Lovable is now available on iOS, allowing users to build web apps through natural language and voice prompts. The launch follows Apple’s enforcement against apps that violate rules on changing behavior post-release, though compliant tools remain allowed. Lovable offers cross-platform editing and subscription tiers ranging from $10 to $80 per month.

Microsoft expands Copilot to Accenture workforce

Microsoft is rolling out its Copilot 365 assistant to about 743,000 Accenture employees, marking its largest enterprise deployment so far. Accenture says internal data shows 97% of staff found the tool sped up routine tasks by as much as 15 times. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Google Translate adds pronunciation coaching

Google Translate introduced a Pronunciation Practice feature, offering phonetic guidance and AI-based feedback on spoken phrases. The tool supports English, Spanish, and Hindi and is currently available in the U.S. and India. The launch coincides with the service’s 20-year anniversary.

GM brings Gemini AI to millions of vehicles

General Motors will deploy Google’s Gemini assistant to about 4 million vehicles from 2022 and newer with Google built-in systems. The assistant can handle complex travel queries and messaging tasks, with rollout happening in phases over several months. Availability requires OnStar connectivity and user opt-in.

YouTube TV expands multiview customization

YouTube TV will allow subscribers to build fully customizable multiviews, letting users watch up to four channels simultaneously. The feature expands on earlier limited multiview options that focused on sports and curated content. The update marks a broader push to give users more control over live viewing layouts.

Vine-style app Divine launches with creator focus

A new app called Divine, backed by Jack Dorsey’s nonprofit, has launched with an archive of about 500,000 Vine videos and support for new content. The platform includes verification to limit AI-generated uploads and tools to filter low-quality AI content. Signups are currently gated by a waitlist or invite system.
