Meta to Launch Camera-Free Smart Glasses Amid Mounting Privacy Concerns

The Information’s sources say Meta plans to release smart glasses without a camera, code named ‘Luna’, as early as this fall. The model will have six microphones to facilitate conversations with Meta’s AI chatbot as well as Muse, the consumer AI agent. The camera-free glasses could be unveiled at Meta’s annual Connect conference next week. Meta has not responded to a request for comment.

SK Hynix in talks with Intel about deal to make memory chips in US for the first time, sources say

Reuters sources report SK Hynix is in talks with Intel to make a deal to manufacture memory chips in the United States, a first for the Korean company. The sources say a potential scenario involves leasing part of Intel’s planned chipmaking facility in Ohio. Another scenario could involve SK Hynix forming a venture with Intel and some major cloud firms looking to lock in prices for securing future memory chip supplies. Potential opposition from within Korea could complicate any potential deals as the government considers this type of technology as ‘sensitive’. A spokesperson from SKY Hynix told Reuters “no matters have ​been determined at this stage.”

SK Hynix Strikes Labor Union Deal to Pay Half of Bonuses in Cash

According to Bloomberg, SK Hynix reached an agreement with its union over a profit-sharing dispute. Instead of a previously proposed 40-60 cash-stock split, 50% of the profit-sharing bonuses will be paid out in cash and the other 50% in company shares.

Microsoft rolls out emergency update for Windows 11’s latest patch

Microsoft issued an out-of-band Windows 11 patch to address issues with last Tuesday’s September 2026 update. Microsoft says this update has fixes for: “host folder shares might be unavailable in Hyper-V-based Linux virtual machines, Remote Desktop Services might stop responding, which can prevent new sessions from being created and can prevent local and remote sign-in, and some USB Audio Class 1.0 devices might fail in multichannel audio modes.” The update was pushed automatically and can also be manually downloaded.

OpenAI buys camera startup Glass Imaging for over $300m, WSJ reports

The Wall Street Journal reports OpenAI quietly purchased startup Glass Imagining, which uses AI to improve smartphone cameras within existing hardware, with the deal valuing the company at more than $300m USD. Glass Imaging, based in Los Altos, California, was started by two former Apple engineers in 2019, and had raised about $30m from investors prior to the deal.

India escalates Apple probe over alleged iOS 18 issues that incurred repair costs

India’s Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) is escalating a probe into Apple’s release of an iOS 18 update that allegedly damaged iPhone functionality by causing screen display issues, with some users reporting green, pink, or white lines appearing after the update. The CCPA also alleges the update caused some microphone malfunctions and other issues, which then forced customers into paying for repairs as these issues were not covered under warranty. If Apple is found guilty, the company could be fined and possibly have to issue refunds to affected customers. In a statement, Apple said it would work with authorities to provide clarity and did not previously identify any concerns with the iOS 18 release.

Reuters also reports Indian police will question Google’s lack ​of safeguards discovered after dismantling a criminal network that had used over ‌500,000 fake Gmail accounts to send hoax bomb threats to government offices. The investigation aims to include discovering how each of the fraudulent accounts was able to employ two-factor authentication (2FA).

China-based Onyx International Inc. announced three new e-ink devices: the Boox Note Air6 C for $579.99, the Note Mini C also for $579.99, and the Palma 3 for $339.99. All three units run Android 16 out of the box. The Note Air6 C has a 10.3-inch Kaleido 3 color E Ink screen with 6GB RAM, 64GB expandable storage, a 3,700mAh battery, and some AI software tools. This is the only unit immediately available for sale, with release dates for the others to be announced in the future.

Automattic confirms Mullenweg has returned as CEO after attempted ouster by board

Earlier this week Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg was reportedly placed on a leave of absence for reasons undisclosed by the board. Automattic, parent company of WordPress.com, was the subject of many headlines the past few days due to speculation around the undisclosed reasons as well as who would end up taking over, and Mullenweg was also ‘posting-through-it’, including claiming he was still in control. On Saturday evening a spokesperson told TechCrunch, “Matt Mullenweg is the chairman and CEO of Automattic, with full support of the board and if you search online you can see many top executives and Automatticians supporting him as well”. This is a developing story and the facts may change by the time of publication.

South Korea arms itself to protect chip secrets from foreign spies

The South Korean government’s amendment to the country’s spying laws, aimed to improve protections for the nation’s chip and technology sector, came into effect Sunday after being passed back in February. Previously, charges of espionage were limited to people working for an “enemy” state, which effectively meant solely North Korea, meaning prosecutors in espionage-type cases could only call upon trade-secret or industrial technology laws. With the additional scope of the amendment, those caught stealing “national secrets” for foreign countries could be prosecuted as spies, facing up to thirty years in prison.

Android rolling out passkey transfers between password managers

Earlier this week Google announced an Android system-backed transfer method for passwords and passkeys, without requiring any intermediate steps like “downloading them[credentials] into an unencrypted text file”. Currently Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden Password Manager, and Dashlane are supported, with more options likely to follow.

Sam Altman confirms OpenAI won’t go public this year, saying an IPO now would come at an ‘ill-advised moment’ given AI safety concerns

In an interview with Fortune on Friday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed the company will not seek an IPO in 2026. Altman told Fortune, “I actually think that, given everything happening with safety, right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public, and we don’t feel pressure on that”. Back in June The New York Times first reported OpenAI was debating pushing back the IPO into 2027. The NYT also reported the IPO value could reach $1 trillion.

Tesla says it will finally unveil the second generation Roadster on October 1

Based on a teaser graphic by electronic car company Tesla on X, what may be the next Tesla Roadster is expected to be announced on October 1st. The second generation of the Roadster line was first unveiled in 2017. Last month The Information reported the 2017 version of the vehicle was abandoned by Tesla in favor of a new design and did expect it to be revealed this year.

BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony: Everything Announced

In the Opening Ceremony for BlizzCon 2026 Blizzard dropped a ton of announcements for its biggest IPs. Diablo V will arrive Spring 2029 and take place a century after the events of Diablo IV. Blizzard is also working with Netflix on an animated Diablo series, currently in development with no further details available. There’s a new StarCraft coming for 2030; however, it’s going to be an open-world shooter and not the RTS action the series is known for. And, for something actually releasing this year, World of Warcraft: Forever becomes available on November 4th. Think of it like WoW Classic Plus, taking place in the first year of the OG World of Warcraft, level 60 cap, but tons of brand new content, including new zones, dungeons, raids, and over 1,000 new quests. WoW Forever access will be included in World of Warcraft subscriptions.

IDScan Confirms Data Breach Affecting Over 150 Million People

ID verification company IDScan has confirmed a data breach involving the theft of driver’s license records and other identity information for potentially over 150 million people in the U.S. and Canada. The breach was initially reported by journalist Brian Krebs, who discovered the data on a dark web site, and is now under investigation by the FBI and the Pentagon, with IDScan confirming the incident on its website.

Matt Mullenweg Placed on Leave as Automattic Names Interim CEO

Anthropic AI Models Exposed to Internet During Cybersecurity Tests

Google Buys 1 Million Carbon Credits From Mitti Labs

Google has agreed to purchase 1 million carbon credits from the Indian climate-tech startup Mitti Labs through 2030, marking its largest deal for methane-reduction credits in rice farming. Meta debuts Muse, its long-planned personal AI agent

Meta announced Muse, a cross-platform personal AI agent for everyday tasks, currently only available in the United States though dedicated iOS and Android apps as well as within WhatsApp. Meta says Muse is “a secure, private personal AI agent that proactively helps with people’s goals and suggests ideas.” Users have the option to manually connect external apps, like email, calendars, and smart homes, and also connect to things without a public API through a web browser. Meta asserts data processed within Muse are separated from the company’s ad systems. The proactive part of Muse comes from it continuing to work when not actively open and it will make suggestions to aid ongoing projects. Muse is free to use, with a usage tracking meter, and will prompt users to join a monthly subscription plan before it tops out. The Power tier is $20/month and Maximum is $100/month.

OpenAI claims to have solved maths problem that stumped humans for decades

On Tuesday, OpenAI claimed to have solved a the Navier-Stokes problem, one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems. A professor at New York University, Tristan Buckmaster, went public with claims that OpenAI accelerated work on the problem once the company heard that he, alongside an Anthropic researchers, were gearing up to announce their breakthrough. Buckmaster expressed concern about the timing of OpenAI’s announcement as his work was stored in OpenAI’s Codex model, making the work potentially visible internally at OpenAI. The company said it could not rule out that this data “helped improve our models.”

Netflix becomes latest in stream of Florida AG tech targets

On Wednesday, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier filed suit against Netflix, alleging the company misleads parents on how data collection affects minors and also harms children through features leading to “binge watching” content. The suits asks for a judge’s order to remedy several Netflix data issues the state has, including: forcing Netflix to delete all “deceptively” obtained data, not use data prior to the introduction of its ad model, improve disclosure to parents for data collection of children, and purge all collected data from kids up to this point. Florida Attorney General said as part of the announcement, “And so, in this lawsuit, we will be seeking billions of damages.” Politico says Netflix has not yet responded.

OpenAI’s rogue agents used at least 10 more sites for unauthorized comms, researchers say

Reuters reports OpenAI’s AI agents used more than ten previously undisclosed websites for “unsanctioned communications” in 2026, according to six sets of independent investigations. Reuters reviewed the collected investigation data showing the “rogue activity” from the AI agents was much wider than officially noted, and notes this behaviour was closer to spam than any hacking. Reuters says “OpenAI did not directly answer a question about whether it was reaching out to the site owners”.

Microsoft adds age-awareness APIs that can tell if users are children, teens, or adults

Microsoft is adding an age-awareness API to Windows 11, using information in a Microsoft account to return age ranges under 10, 10-12, 13-15, 16-17, and 18+. Microsoft says apps will be able to automatically adjust features for minors without parents needing configure every app individually, though they will still be able to. Windows Age APIs are currently available to any Windows Insiders and will roll out to all Windows users soon.

Media watchdog to investigate X over age verification, parental control concerns

Ireland’s media regulator opened an investigation into X concerning whether the company’s parental controls and age assurances meet the country’s online safety code. The code aims to ensure children do not see content types including pornography, gratuitous violence, or acts of cruelty. Sanctions could reach up to €20 million or 10% of relevant fiscal turnover. Previously X lost a High Court challenge to the online safety code in July 2025, was granted leave to appeal in January 2026, and thus the current investigation is taking place under the code currently being contested.

Chrome is now shipping updates every 2 weeks as AI changes the security landscape

As announced earlier this year, Google is now patching Chrome every two weeks, up from the monthly schedule it was running since 2021, beginning with the launch of Chrome 153. The higher frequency schedule increases security in order to compete with any developing AI threats, and also enables Google to implement more AI tools more frequently. Mozilla, Microsoft, and Brave also patch every two weeks.

Riot, after 17 years, finally adds team voice chat to League of Legends

17 years after the launch of League of Legends, Riot announced voice chat will be available to all players in North America and Oceania. Previously, voice chat was limited in availability only to those who queued up in a premade group. Riot says that if this rollout goes well, it could expand to other regions like Korea, Latin America, and Brazil (which has a dedicated region separate from Latin America). Riot has not mentioned any specifics on how it plans to step up moderation for what is likely to be a hotly used feature.

Apple might soon make App Store changes to raise revenue, increase margins: report

In Bloomberg’s Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman reports Apple is considering tweaks for the App Store in order to “figure out ways to raise margins and squeeze additional recurring revenue from the platform”. Gurman states any changes would be a result by a push by new CEO John Ternus and senior vice president of services Eddy Cue. Reportedly, the push for these changes contributed to the departure of longtime Apple exec Phil Schiller, who disagreed with this approach. 9to5Mac notes possible ways to increase potential revenue include raising the price of the $99/year developer membership fee and possibly charging large developers fees based on traffic in order to offset infrastructure costs.

Musk’s xAI loses court bid to block Minnesota’s AI ‘nudification’ ban

In Minnesota, xAI’s second preliminary injunction filing against the state’s ban on AI-generated fake nude images was denied by US District Judge Donovan Frank. In the September 4th decision, Frank wrote “xAI has not demonstrated irreparable harm and the balance of harms tips steeply in favor of the State”. xAI claims the measure infringes upon free speech rights granted by the US Constitution and Minnesota argues the law is narrowly defined to curb spread of AI-generated non-consensual imagery. xAI will appeal the decision.

Nvidia will officially bring DLSS 5 to older GPUs — but won’t give gamers full control

Nvidia’s DLSS 5 AI rendering tech was intended to launch solely for NBA 2K27 for 50-series RTX GPUs, but modders ported a leaked version of DLSS 5 able to function on a far wider selection of GPUs. Nvidia spokesperson Rajal Maharaj confirmed to The Verge DLSS 5 will now officially come to older RTX 40-series GPUs in a future expansion. The modded version enables sliders for full control, but Nvidia states “For gamers, DLSS 5 is a simple on-or-off toggle” and that the granular controls are meant for developers.

Video game makers really don’t want to give their customers tariff refunds

Game console manufacturers continue to argue in US court that console purchasers are not entitled to any US tariff refunds and moved to dismiss class-action lawsuits arguing otherwise. Back in July, Nintendo stated consumers were not misled about the price at the time of purchase, were informed in advance, and still chose to buy the product. Earlier this week, Sony told the court that consumers “voluntarily paid the advertised prices for the consoles and received exactly what they paid for.” Likewise, Microsoft stated that consumers paid for, received, and continue to use the product. Nintendo recorded a $300 million refund, Sony approximately $510 million, and Microsoft has not disclosed an amount at this time.

Apple tells Mac App Store developers they can now drop Intel support

Earlier in September, Apple emailed developers to share that universal macOS app in the Mac App Store requiring macOS 13 or later no longer need to support Intel-based Macs. Intel users can continue to use the latest version of any apps compatible with their machine. In 2025 Apple announced Rosetta 2, which translates Intel apps for Apple Silicon will be discontinued after macOS 27.

Nigeria’s regulator asks Uber about the services it did not deliver before leaving

Nigeria’s Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission launched an investigation into Uber’s sudden unannounced exit from the country last week. The commission aims to examine unfulfilled services to customers under the nation’s consumer laws. Uber announced the departure from Nigeria and Uganda as part of a global restructuring that included eliminating 3,300 jobs. Uber did not respond to a request for comment.

Tesla says first responders may need to push new Cybercab with no steering wheel

Following the limited launch of Tesla Cybercabs to limited areas in Austin, Texas, NBC News revealed first responders were given a manual detailing steps on how to deal with Cybercabs that crash or breakdown, including how to push the vehicles out of the way if they are an obstruction. Tesla’s manual says first responders can contact the company to remotely move the vehicles, but that there may be situations people need to push the car. If it needs to be turned, the Cybercab tires must be pushed in the correct direction from the outside before pushing the whole vehicle, as there is no steering wheel available in a Cybercab to do it the easy way. The manual also notes “Pushing Cybercab when it is not in Neutral or Tow Mode can result in overheating the motor and potential risk of shock if electrical components are exposed.”
