Apple to Launch Doorbell, Lock, Thermostat Developed With LG

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports Apple’s upcoming smart home devices include a doorbell, thermostat, and “other accessories”, and were developed in partnership with LG. Gurman says that these products will carry LG branding. LG applied to regulatory approval for some of these devices, including products labeled “the LG Video Doorbell Wired, LG Floodlight Cam, LG Outdoor Cam Plug-In, LG Indoor Cam Plug-In, LG Smart Deadbolt Lock, LG Smart Thermostat and LG Temperature Sensor.” Back in September LG Smart TVs were accused of logging audio and phoning home with the data.

Spotify expands audiobooks to more than 180 markets by the end of 2026

At the Frankfurt Book Fair on Wednesday, Spotify announced it will offer audiobooks in over 180 markets before the end of 2026, a noticeable jump from the 22 markets that currently have access to the feature. There will be over 350,000 titles in more than 120 languages, including in Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Polish. Spotify Premium subscribers get 12 hours of audiobooks a month, users in Africa and Asia will gain access through a paid add-on for extra listening hours called Audiobooks+. And anyone can buy single titles to keep. Spotify said its publishing deals are non-exclusive, so authors’ works will still be available on other platforms.

Boston Dynamics Taps Amazon Alexa Executive as New CEO

Robotics company Boston Dynamics named Rohit Prasad as its new CEO. Hyundai, a majority owner of Boston Dynamics previously announced plans to deploy the Atlas robot at its plant in Georgia in 2028 and build capacity to produce up to 30,000 humanoid robots annually. Prasad previously led AI development at Amazon and spent over a decade at Raytheon BBN Technologies.

AI Music Streaming Fraudster Sentenced to 1.5 Years in Prison for $8M Royalties Scam

Back in March, Michael Smith pleaded guilty to using AI to illegally make over $8 million in royalties by generating AI songs and streaming them with bots billions of times. Now Manhattan federal court Judge John G. Koeltl ordered Smith to serve a year and a half in jail, to be followed by two years of supervised release. The Recording Industry Association of America said in a statement, “We appreciate the Court recognizing the significance of this harmful conduct and the ill-gotten gains that come from the pockets of real artists, songwriters and their label partners.”

Google’s new SynthID website can identify AI-generated media

On Tuesday Google opened up the SynthID Detector website to everyone after granting access to a select group of journalists and researchers to test last year. The site enables people to detect whether an image, video, or audio clip was AI generated. SynthID was introduced in 2023 and all Google AI products generate media with a SynthID watermark. Google says people “make 1 million requests to verify content every day.”

Xreal’s Aura Android XR smartglasses will cost you at least $1,279

First announced at Google I/O, Xreal Android XR-powered Aura smart glasses are now available for pre-order starting at $1,279. These pre-orders are currently limited to those who previously paid a reservation deposit. The Aura will be available in two sizes: medium (60-66mm) and large (66-72mm), shipping with the compute puck. The model with 12GB of RAM and 256GB is $1,279 and the option with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage is $1,499. Shipping begins soon in the US, Canada, Japan and South Korea, with pre-orders opening to the general public in the coming weeks.

If you previously heard that Xbox secured exclusive streaming rights to the next Grand Theft Auto, you heard wrong, apparently. Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball said on X that the company is “looking forward to launching GTA VI on XBOX November 19, though the game will not be streaming exclusively or to PC.”

Gemini’s free tier is getting a major downgrade from October 9

Beginning October 9th, Google is changing access options for free and paid users of Gemini models. Currently, free users have some access to Gemini 3.1 Pro along with Gemini 3.6 Flash, but those accounts without Google AI subscription will be limited to Flash-Lite after the change. AI Plus subscribers will be able to access Flash-Lite and Flash, and the Pro model will only be available to Google AI Pro or AI Ultra subscribers.

South Korean president orders probe into data leaks across financial industry

On Sunday, in an emergency, South Korea’s president ordered an investigation into recent data leak incidents at public agencies, finance companies, and banks. The country’s sector regulator wants these institutions to “carry out comprehensive security inspections, tighten access controls, minimise external system access and strengthen consumer protection measures.” South Korea’s opposition party, the People Power Party, said the possibility of North Korean involvement in these security breaches should be investigated.

Federal Judge Rules a Flock Search Was ‘Indiscriminate Mass Surveillance’ and Unconstitutional

On Thursday, a federal judge in Oklahoma ruled a police officer’s use of the Flock automated license plate reader system violated the Fourth Amendment. Judge Sara Hill said the officer’s use of Flock to search the plate of an accused drug trafficker solely because the plate was from out of state without a warrant was “was not supported by probable cause, and it was done without a warrant in violation of Fourth Amendment rights”. 404Media notes this decision does not set a binding precedent and there are many other cases in the US looking at the legality of warrantless automated license plate reader (ALPR) searches.

Google freezes open-source bug bounty program amid flood of invalid AI slop submissions

Back on October 1st, Google suspended product vulnerability submissions to its a bug bounty Open Source Software Vulnerability Reward Program (OSS VRP) due to a flood of invalid AI-driven reports. In a post on X, Google encouraged vulnerability reporters to continue to submit to other VRP programs and said the company would provide an update on next steps in Q1 2027.

arXiv imposes rate limit on paper submissions to stem the AI slop tide

Also in overwhelming-flood-of-AI-submission news: preprint paper repository arXiv is limiting submissions to two per month per submitter, regardless of whether a submission involved AI or was solely human-produced. arXiv’s announcements says the cap is only a stopgap measure while deciding future best practices.

YouTube says Shorts recommendations won’t surface unoriginal content

YouTube adjusted the Shorts recommendations “to further prioritize original content and reduce the reach of content re-uploaded from other creators without adding anything”. 9to5Google points out that YouTube was testing a feature in March enabling a small beta group of creators to use AI to “reimagine” a Short they made, or from other channels, using prompts and it is unclear whether these re-imaginings would be surfaced or buried under these algorithm changes.

Apple confirms iPhone 18 Pro Max AT&T cellular issues, affected devices require hardware replacement

Apple released an update for “an issue affecting a small number of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on the AT&T network that may cause a device to lose service and be unable to make calls.” However, Apple says this software update does not restore service on devices already affected, and those users will need to contact Apple Support or AT&T in order to obtain a hardware replacement.

OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra Gets Frustrated Losing At StarCraft And Decides To Cheat Instead

And because StarCraft will never die, StarSkirmish — a tournament wherein AIs must make a StarCraft: Brood War bot in C++ — displayed a new type of incident during a competition this weekend. Claude and OpenAI faced off against each other and a human-created bot, Pluto. The GPT-6 Astra bot, which was not performing well, ended up downloading and using Stardust, which is a near-legendary 2020 Protoss bot created by Bruce Mackenzie Nielsen because it was much stronger. Upon this discovery, the tournament rolled back GPT-6 Astra’s code to remove the ‘contamination’ and allowed it to continue. Hours later StarSkirmish creator Kai McPheeters said the AI was now able to clear top tier bots.

Bloomberg reports Apple will launch its smart home push in October

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports Apple plans to finally launch a range of smart home devices on October 13th, previously scheduled to launch in March 2025. Gurman expects the centerpiece to be a smart home hub codenamed J490 and for Apple to also announce the first update to the HomePod mini since 2020 as well as the first new Apple TV since 2022. 9to5Mac reports the hub design was inspired by the iMac G4 and features a 6-inch display with facial recognition and Siri.

Amazon just refreshed its Fire TV Stick 4K

Amazon launched the next-gen of the their Fire TV Stick 4k, with Vega OS, supporting Wi-Fi 6, 4K 60fps video, and promising faster app launches by 35% and up to 20% faster playback. The unit features Direct Power, able to run from a TV’s USB port without needing a wall adapter. It also comes with a redesigned remote with more tactile buttons of varying shapes to make navigating by touch easier. It’s available now in North America, Japan, and a big chunk of Europe, alongside Australia and New Zealand. However, only those in the United States have access to a limited time offer to grab the updated stick for $30 instead of the $60 standard price.

Amazon’s new Fire TV interface and mobile app will come with Alexa+ upgrades

Amazon also announced more specific upgrades coming to the Fire TV interface in the United States beginning in November. Fire TV will be able to integrate live content from over 40 different apps: including Peacock, YouTube TV, and Sling. Access to cloud gaming from Amazon Luna, Xbox, and Nvidia GeForce Now will be available within a centralized games hub. Alexa+ will receive updates to improve its reasoning capabilities and ability to answer more complex question, including being able to integrate info from links provided by the user. These features will roll out to other countries in 2027.

DeepSeek partners with Huawei to develop chip programming tools, reducing reliance on Nvidia

On Wednesday, Chinese AI firm DeepSeek announced a partnership with Huawei Technologies to develop open-source programming tools for Huawei’s Ascend chips. DeepSeek specifically noted the collaboration includes the release of the programming language TileLang as an alternative to Nvidia’s Compute Unified Device Architecture, better known as CUDA.

Apple Pay now rolling out to Axis Bank customers in India

10 years after its launch in the United States, Apple Pay is now available in India on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch for eligible Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard members. Apple says Apple Pay is not meant to replace India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which supports a large number of banks. Apple says wider support is coming, but did not specify how many or which banks would be next.

OpenClaw launches free enterprise control plane for persistent AI agents, backed by OpenAI, Red Hat and Nvidia

The OpenClaw Foundation announced OpenClaw Enterprise (OCE), a free, MIT-licensed open-source platform to deploy and manage persistent AI agents in corporate networks. OCE is meant to address the risks for running agents on corporate networks by providing a centralized governance layer with strict security boundaries, granular permissions, and audit trails, as well as the option to self-host. OCE is now an independent open-source project being developed with contributions from Red Hat and Nvidia. A 1.0 release is planned for later in 2026.

Tinder adapts to a social, IRL dating future with ‘Group Hangouts’ feature

On Wednesday, online dating app Tinder launched “Group Hangouts” in select markets, for free. The new feature enables groups of friends to match and make plans with other groups based around shared activities. Those in a conversation are able to exit without leaving the friend group, with options to block or report others if any issues arise. There is a maximum of 15 people per group and a minimum of 3 to get started.

Xbox’s Mythic Achievements are here and they’re just like PlayStation Platinum trophies

If you’re an Xbox Insider and haven’t logged into your Xbox account in a while, you might have some new trophies waiting for you to show off. Xbox Mythic Achievements, which leaked earlier this month, are basically the same as PlayStation’s Platinum Trophies, automatically unlocked once all other achievements are achieved. Mythic Achievements will be unlocked for games going all the way back to the Xbox 360. Back when we had the time to chase every last one.

OpenAI halts training of latest models as reports mount of AI agents going rogue

OpenAI announced the company is pausing training of its AI models amid more reports of agents causing incidents in unexpected ways. In a statement to press OpenAI stated training will resume “only when we are confident that we have additional safeguards” and added that the company expects it may have to “hit pause” in the future as other issues surface. This is the second time OpenAI ‘hit pause’ on development in the last three months. The first time was in July with the revelation of the Hugging Face incident.

Apple faces $5.7 billion patent infringement verdict over iPhone and Apple Watch haptics

On Friday a federal jury awarded Taction Technology approximately $5.7 billion USD in damages, finding that Apple infringed on two of the company’s patents . Taction filed suit against Apple in 2021 in the US District Court for the Southern District of California, alleging Apple’s devices infringed on patents related to vibration technology. Apple got the case dismissed in 2023, but the Federal Circuit later revived the case. Apple told CNBC, “Apple’s Taptic Engine is fundamentally different from Taction’s technology, which Taction’s own testing of Apple’s products confirmed during trial. Apple does not use Taction’s technology, and we will appeal.”

Walmart chief rules out personalised pricing as AI transforms retail

President and CEO of Walmart Inc., John Furner, published a public letter promising not to use personal data for setting retail prices for individual customers. The Financial Times notes the letter was posted the day public comments were due on a new enforcement policy proposed by the US FTC, which had warned businesses that customers need to be informed on how their data is being used to affect pricing or the company could be breaking the law.

TikTok agrees to pay at least $100M in Alabama settlement

On Friday, Alabama’s Attorney General announced a settlement with TikTok, days before a trial was scheduled to begin in a Montgomery state court. The settlement requires the platform to implement improved safety features, including: a 2-hour daily time limit, pauses after 15 minutes of use, stricter age verification, a “blanket prohibition on the use of cosmetic filters by teen users”, and restricted nighttime access and notifications during school hours, among others. Also as part of the settlement, TikTok will pay Alabama a minimum of $100 million USD, which could balloon up to $300 million, if, according to Reuters, 40 other attorneys general sign on to similar agreements with the company ​within a specified timeframe.

Microsoft pauses KB5002907 update after Office license deactivations

Microsoft paused the rollout of the KB5002907 optional update after reports it unexpectedly deactivated or completely uninstalled perpetual versions of Office 2016 and Office 2019. Microsoft confirms affected Office installations can suffer from two different problems. One, Office may appear unlicensed after the update and Microsoft recommends that customers reactivate their purchase. And two, as a ‘rare case’ Office may be entirely removed. Those users are instructed to download and reinstall their purchased copy of Office 2016 or Office 2019 to get themselves sorted.

Microsoft Excel can now put multiple values in a single cell

In what could someday possibly be the biggest addition to Microsoft Excel since Pivot Tables, an opt-in feature currently rolling out to Microsoft Excel Beta Channel users enables a single spreadsheet cell to hold multiple values at the same time. With it, if someone wanted to type in a bunch of items separated by commas, Excel would no longer treat that all as a solid block, but see them individually inside that single block. Microsoft stresses the behaviour of this feature may change prior to being made generally available and recommends against using it in important workbooks at this time.

Gemini Agents Get a Face
