Ueberleben – Foundation for Torture Survivors
Victims of war and torture are often deeply traumatized. They have survived. But their lives are almost nothing like they were before.

We cannot heal survivors of torture. But we can help them as they return to a dignified life.
The Ueberleben – Foundation for Torture Survivors supports men and women, children, young persons and families, who have often been subjected to unimaginable horrors. In order to learn how to cope with these traumatic experiences these individuals require medical and psychosocial care. Both physical health and psychological stability are important in helping these persons to integrate into society and find employment opportunities in the places where they now live in exile. The Foundation works towards achieving these aims.

The Ueberleben – Foundation for Torture Survivors was established in 1997 with the support of the former Federal President of Germany, Richard von Weizsäcker. In 1999 the non-profit Foundation started working to help torture survivors.

WASH – the Social Art Festival

WASH – the first Social Art Festival!

In connection with the Viva con Agua Wassertage 2011 the first social art festival with the topic WASH (Water Sanitation Hygiene) will take place from November 10th – 22nd 2011 in Hamburg / Germany.
The festival sets the topic WASH in a totally new and artistic concept: eleven international artists will be invited to an art camp and work on the topic WASH. The camp will take place in the creative cultural area called Schanzenviertel in the centre of Hamburg. During the ten days the art camp can be visited. In the nights public events will take place to gain more awareness to the WASH festival and camp. At the end of the week the art pieces will be presented in an exhibition and auctioned afterwards.

Artists from around the world can apply now until October 8th 2011 to take part in the WASH Camp. The WASH Jury consisting of credible representatives from the art scene like Alain Bieber (rebel:art), DAIM, Tasek, RKT one or JUST as well as several Partners of WASH elects 22 finalists. The 11 attendants will be finally selected via online voting from October 10th – 15th to take part at the camp in Hamburg.
Besides the camp, public events, workshops and several actions will take place to gain public attention and collect donations. Musicians like DJ Mad (Beginner), Tyree Cooper (Chicago/Berlin) and iconAclass (New Jersey) are supporting the Festival with their shows. The proceeds of the Festival go to the actual water project of Viva con Agua and the Welthungerhilfe in Etiopia.

WASH?!
Access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) is one of the key challenges of the 21st century. Worldwide more than 900 million people live without access to water, while over 2.6 billion people lack access to basic sanitation. The situation is demeaning to the dignity of those affected and progress towards improvements is slow; so slow, in fact, that the relevant Millennium Development Goal ranks amongst the most off-track.

Without having access to WASH, societies cannot break the vicious cycle of disease and poverty; more than half of hospital beds in Sub-Saharan Africa are occupied by patients suffering from sanitation and water related diseases. Lack of WASH causes high rates of infant and child mortality under the age of five; more than 4000 lives are lost per day, killing over five times more than HIV/AIDS and twice as many as malaria. The situation causes 194,000,000 lost school days per year and high rates of school drop-outs amongst girls when they reach puberty. Due to all of the above, a WHO survey shows that each dollar invested in WASH yields a return of between 3 and 34 Euros depending upon the region and country. Furthermore WASH-security helps to curb conflicts over limited resources like water and fertile land. Water, sanitation and hygiene is therefore a foundation for socio-economic development.

With its newly founded artists’ residence Bad Gastein aims to provide the artistic soul with scope for inspiration and strength for intense creativity. During the summer artists from Austria and abroad work at the artists’ residence in Bad Gastein’s historic hydroelectric power plant as part of the sommer.frische.kunst project. Under the motto “Tradition is life” historic events from Bad Gastein are brought back to life and portrayed in a contemporary modern style through the creativity of the young artists. The international scholarship programme offers aspiring young artists scope for the development of their creative talent by providing free ccommodation at the participating hotels and workshops at the former power plant.

Former power plant at the waterfall
The historically significant former Bad Gastein power plant is located in the heart of Bad Gastein at the foot of the town’s waterfall. When put into operation in 1914 it was both one of the first and largest hydroelectric power plants in the Salzburger Land region. Originally constructed to advance the mechanisation of gold mining in Bad Gastein, it was soon supplying the entire valley with electricity. Today the former power plant is not just an industrial monument but also serves as a witness to the history of electrical power generation. Visitors of the power plant are not only impressed by the fifteen metre-long marble switchboard but the ‘electrical’ tradition of the spa resort dating back to 1886 is also illuminated.
At that time Bad Gastein was the first electrically lit spa town in Europe. The first power plant with a thermal water lifting machine built in 1886 belonged to Emperor Franz Joseph I. After it was closed in 2004 the town council bought back the power plant and declared the building a historic monument. Today Bad Gastein allows the premises to be used for a new purpose – art.
The artists’ residence serves to breathe new life into the historic walls. Bad Gastein therefore also bridges the gap between tradition and modernity here as well.

Sign of the Time – Rare Poster

Mankind always felt the need to leave visible marks of its existence. In 1995 this fact was payed tribute to on a wall of a skyscraper in Hamburg-Bergedorf. In collaboration with the SAGA housing association Loomit, Darco, Hesh, Vaine, Ohne and DAIM created the highest graffiti of the world so far on this aforementioned wall of a skyscraper.

The „Zeichen der Zeit“ (“Sign of the Time”) poster shows the final result of this daring exceptional project.

“Street Art – Meanwhile in deepest East Anglia, thunderbirds were go ….” taking place at the Von der Heydt Kunsthalle in Wuppertal-Barmen, Germany from 08. of may to 25. of september 2011.

Streetart is everywhere. Unsolicited, it leaves its traces and signs in urban space. It conquers public space with stickers, posters, extensive murals, and stencil graffiti. It’s galleries are the world’s streets. What began as graffiti in the large cities on America’s east coast forty years ago has since experienced a decisive development. Even if the majority of actions continue to be produced anonymously and illegally, it is no longer exclusively a phenomenon associated with youth culture. Many of the protagonists have emancipated themselves from the pictorial language of graffiti writing and experimented with new forms of expression. With their subtle and humorous, occasionally offensive interventions in the urban landscape they attempt to force open familiar visual habits. As a rule, they are not concerned with damaging the urban infrastructure but with participating in a dialogue with the public.

There is a variety of Streetart. Temporary actions, unusual objects and sculptures, lettering, and characters are woven into the visual flow of the city as stumbling blocks. The possibility that many of the passers-by take no notice of these interventions is consciously taken into account. Thus they comprise a subversive counterweight to the constant presence of advertising, whose blinking images and seductive buying options dominate everyday life. It is not only in this respect that Streetart is the expression of a critical examination of the social, cultural, and economic dimensions of the city, which in the age of globalization is rapidly and sustainably changing.
Streetart has recently experienced a downright hype. Numerous galleries and museums around the world have organized exhibitions, and works by the most well-known representatives of the genre have gained premium prices at auctions. What some accuse of being commercialization, the loss of authenticity, and the betrayal of original interests is viewed by many artists as a new chance. By transferring their themes and methods in the protected space of the museum, they develop very new and surprising approaches. But what kind of art is this that leaves its ancestral terrain? Do the works not require the city as a resonating space, as an immediate opponent? And is one of the essential features of Streetart not its impermanence, its spontaneity? The Kunsthalle Barmen will be devoting itself to these questions in a large-scale exhibition.

Zurich Main Station (Switzerland)

On 9 February 2011, 10 popular artists will assume temporary ownership of a brand new white Volvo S60.
This will mark the start of a public work-in-progress art event spread over five days. Each artist will be allowed half a day. As the artists repeatedly paint, spray and remodel the vehicle, they will turn the Volvo into a creative work of art.
The setting: the magnificent hall of Zurich main station.
The set: a three-dimensional canvas with the Volvo S60.
