…I know I still can’t believe it’s 2020 either or that we’re already at the end of January!

We’ve had some beautiful cold evenings recently at home and I grabbed this pick of a starlit sky using a long exposure on my iPhone!

Needless to say my shaggy dogs have been enjoying the colder weather too and here I’m pictured with Ellie sharing a secret on a recent walk.

I was due to be presenting the first Andi Peters’ Food Fest show of the year on Monday but as I’m sure many of you may have heard Piers Morgan say on Good Morning Britain, Andi managed to get shingles and had to cancel a few TV appearances, including his two hour Monday show with myself. I have spoken a couple of times with Andi and I’m pleased to say he’s making a good recovery from what I understand is a very painful experience and we all wish him well in his recovery.

Andi and his team are hopeful of a swift return to our screens and who knows, he may even be able to join me this Thursday as we have a wonderful Today’s Special Value (TSV) from The Real Pie Company!

I enjoyed a relatively quiet but very pleasant Christmas and a special birthday at home with my family, returning to The Q on the 30th to see in the new year and indeed decade!

I managed three days back before succumbing to winter lurgy and a loss of voice! Hooray! I hear you cheer

Oh well… once again there was no white Christmas for us at home (other than the West End musical version we went to see – excellent cast! We also went to a panto for the first time in years to see Aladdin at Woking). But once we’d tidied away the decorations for another year, we turned our attentions to what 2020 would bring us.

For our wildlife though, their thoughts are focused on surviving the colder months and staying fit enough to start another family in the spring. We of course can help them out here – as well as receiving a huge amount of enjoyment in return by welcoming them into our gardens and onto our balconies.

Choosing the right food for wildlife can be tricky for the average person, how many of us thought we were being kind leaving a saucer of milk out for the hedgehogs? And indeed, when did you last see one of those lovely little creatures? In my childhood they were a very common sight and I can honestly say that we haven’t had one in our garden for many a year now and we’ve left gaps under our garden fences large enough for them to get under.

Despite their shocking decline there are some amazing hedgehog charities working hard to help these incredible creatures – so with our help such charities may turn their plight around, let’s hope so.

There are many things we can do to encourage wildlife into our gardens and one of the easiest and quickest ways is to feed our beautiful UK birds. For a few winters now I’ve been using Richard Jackson’s Premium High Energy Bird Food – developed, of course by my pal and gardening expert, Richard Jackson.

The good news is that’s it’s our Gardening Pick of The Month for January and this Premium High Energy Bird Food is packed with fantastic ingredients, including whole sunflower hearts, kibbled peanuts, oat hearts and oyster grit, plus new recipe suet pellets – a key high-energy ingredient much loved by birds throughout the year.

Richard told me he worked with leading bird food specialists to develop his premium feed. Other ingredients include red and white dari, kibbled peanuts, canary seed, hempseed, nyger seed and dried mealworms.

Although developed for all-year-round nutrition, the inclusion of suet pellets can help birds survive cold winters and whilst looking after their young during fledgling season in spring and summer.

This is a short, festive blog to sign off 2019…

As it’s my birthday on Christmas day I always request that I take a short break over Christmas, which for the last 22 years has meant that I’m always on-air for the New Year. This suits me well and I look forward to meeting up with you all on the 30th of December for some sale bargains.

I don’t know if you are the same, but I find that around this time of year I spend time reflecting on the past, present and future, taking stock of the “status quo”, reflecting on past years and trying to second guess what may lie ahead.

I genuinely hope that you’ve all had a wonderful 2019, but sadly I know that this will not be the case for us all, but that said, some of you may well have had the best year ever and should celebrate that with gusto! (I never use that word in speech but it seems right to do so here).

I thought I’d sign off this year with some festive photos of Toby and Ellie and a guest appearance from Buzz, a Cockapoo pup belonging to Daria a friend of my daughter Ali – just too cute to leave out!

My heart goes out to all those affected by the deluges of rain and resulting floods reported on the national news – I genuinely hope that they are able to get back to relative normality as soon as possible, after what must be an exhausting and huge clearing up operation.

I always have my smart phone with me and have taken some gorgeous shots, which I wanted to share with you.

Kiri will present our creation to the selection committee at Hotel Chocolat and it will receive either a Red or the much sort after Green card from the team.

I’m back into action on Tuesday for The Lunchtime Show and on Wednesday I’m back with Andi Peters for two hours from 5pm for a Food Fest with plenty of mouth-watering Festive Food ideas. On Thursday I’m recording a new promo with Andi for our forthcoming series of shows, which is bound to be a lot of fun. You’ll be seeing the fruits of our labour soon.

Staying on a food note – I’ve been having fun developing a new flavour combination for Luxury UK chocolate experts Hotel Chocolat! Katy Pullinger, Will and myself were invited to come up with some suggestions and with the help of chocolatier Kiri Kalenko actually brought our creations to life! We now have to pitch our creations to the Hotel Chocolat hierarchy and I’ll report back in much greater detail in forthcoming blogs.

On Sunday the innovative US cleaning giants Shark return to our screens with the returning and brilliant Shark DuoClean Lift-Away True Pet cordless vacuum. I’ve had a sample at home and I must say I’m really impressed – I’ll be totally honest when I first saw it I thought it might be a little cumbersome as it isn’t just a brilliant upright it can literally ‘lift-away’ to become a handheld unit for all sorts of cleaning tasks.

But… it isn’t at all cumbersome – it truly glides over hard or carpeted floors and has a simple swivel handle action to effortlessly steer. I loved the simple fingertip electronic button on the handle that lets you select hard floor or carpet and switches the ‘Boost’ on or off. It sticks to either task brilliantly staying in constant contact with either surface. It’s really quiet compared to other vacuums I’ve tried in the past and as well as being cordless it’s of course bagless. The powerful battery can be charged in three ways – I found removing it, by simply lifting it out by its built-in handle and placing it in its charging cradle (included) the best way for me.

As I always say on air – the best way to make a considered purchase is to try it at home with your own ‘dust/dirt/hair’ etc. For me, it’s a mix of garden debris and pet hair but for you it might be city dust and cat hair? Regular expert guest Phil Parker will once again be putting it through its paces throughout the day – stock permitting!

It’s about this time of year that children are in denial that their never-ending summer hols are approaching their final couple of weeks and Mum’s are fretting that their little darlings have already out-grown the school uniforms they bought last term!

Well those particular days have long since passed by for Tracey and I, but nevertheless around this time of year you do start to prepare for the colder days, particularly in the garden. At the same time we are in denial that the number of barbecues we can fit in this summer has greatly reduced! I love to cook on my gas barbecue and it’s a feature of our family summer diet.

I had a scare last week – in readiness to start cooking, I removed its rain cover, turned on the gas bottle and fired her up! Only to remember that I had left the cleaning scraper/brush under the lid… and as I opened it I saw the bulging terrified eyes of a wood mouse scurrying around under the burners!! I immediately shouted a profanity and turned off the gas. I was hesitant to lift the lid in case I was greeted with an unpleasant sight but you can imagine my relief when I saw it running away afterwards, it looked okay (possibly minus a hair or three) – I don’t suppose he or she will be back after that episode. A lesson learnt for us both!

Winterising the barbie (is that how you spell it?) and the garden in general is always a bit of a chore and any tool that can help in that regard is always appreciated. I was presenting the Original Garden Broom the other day with Gill Gauntlett and I managed to order one before it sold out, at the time of writing this there were a few of the Red option in stock and I can highly recommend this fabulous piece of “old school” design, made from recycled coconut fibres, for sweeping up leaves, pine needles etc. It was time for a replacement as I’ve had mine a few years now and it’s worn a little thin like many of my jokes!

As previously mentioned I’ve been taking a week out here and there this summer and on the whole I’ve been lucky with the weather as I caught up with some old friends, visited both my Mum and Father-in-law who live in West Sussex and Dorset respectively, and got a few of those never-ending DIY jobs done around the house – but as they say a change is often as good as a rest.

So as we sail through the first few weeks’ of the holiday month of August, it reminded me that the Birthstone of the Month is the very summery green gemstone peridot, which I’m reliably informed is also aligned with the zodiac sign of Leo.

It’s believed that the Egyptians were the first people to mine this alluring golden-green gem on the volcanic Red Sea island of Topazios. The ancient Egyptians called peridot “the sun gem” believing it had fallen down from the skies and of course, anything associated with their Sun God Ra was very special to them.

Peridot is also frequently found in meteor craters, which might explain why you sometimes see it described as the extra-terrestrial gemstone. Generally it’s found in lava deposits, so it’s not surprising that it’s been written that Captain Cook reputedly spotted peridot glistening on the sea bed as he approached the shallow waters off the Volcanic Islands of Hawaii. Peridot is also found in other USA states, Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa, Australia, China, Pakistan, Myanmar and even Norway.

Most peridot gemstones seen in jewellery pieces are a beautiful gold/yellow green, quite distinct from those shades seen in Emeralds, Tsavorite Garnet or Chrome Diopside, although the gem can appear in a range of shades, from grass green to dark olive green.

I’ll be presenting a few Gardening Shows next weekend, which I love to do, and we’ll be focusing on getting ready for autumn. So with that most beautiful of seasons in mind, we have on Sunday (18th) a decorative Garden Lamp Post Today’s Special Value (TSV) from Luxform.

I also hope it’s warm enough for everyone! Last week I enjoyed a relaxing week away on Spain’s Costa Blanca with my family and we seem to have brought the baking hot weather back to the UK.
