Apply Now for Texas' Next Top Designer!

It's a bit short notice but Texas' Next Top Designer is accepting applications for the 2012 competition until next Friday, May 25th. Aspiring designers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area should take a quick look at their Guidelines Page to see if it's something they want to do.

The "Search for Texas' Next Top Designer" began in 2007, bringing together emerging fashion and accessories designers around Texas to compete by demonstrating their talent, showcasing their creations and proving their business savvy. Board members, along with a panel of experts, media, retailers and industry professionals evaluate the designers in four categories including womenswear, menswear, accessories and handbags.

The Texas' Next Top Designer award includes a financial reimbursement grant and in-kind support for business development. Assistance may include subsidized work and showroom space, collateral production, advertising, financial planning, targeted fast-track business assistance, and networking with Texas based industry leaders.

Since its inception, hundreds of designers from all over the state have applied, but only three have taken the annual prize: Abi Ferrin, Jeannie Vianney and Megan Summerville. Most notable, of course, is Abi Ferrin who has gone on to show in New York and gained national praise. You could be next!

First Bloomingdale’s Outlets in Texas to Open by Summer When two new Bloomingdale's Outlets open in Dallas and Grand Prairie in 2012, the stores will become the first of their kind in Texas. The Dallas store will open at The Shops at Park Lane in spring 2012, Bloomingdale's announced Wednesday. The Grand Prairie store will be at the Paragon Outlets complex and will open this summer. Dallas Local Fashion News | Announcing Fashion Week Dallas 2012!

I think this news is long overdue for supporters of the local Dallas fashion scene. This past Monday, the Dallas Weekly newspaper sent out a press release announcing Fashion Week Dallas. That's right - the holy grail of local fashion, which has been whispered and wished, which was happening then not, finally got a date: January 16-22, 2012.

The man spearheading this project is Dallas Weekly's newest fashion editor Mahiri Takai. Takai founded his own production company in 2007 - Mklinks Models/Fashion Shows and Fashion Syndicate Press - and has produced shows in London, Florida, Atlanta, and California.

"The wait is over," says Takai, "We have fashion week in our grasp and we are going to make this one of the biggest and best.“

This event will provide a core focus for the local fashion industry centered around a schedule of major fashion events and activities. Fashion Week Dallas (FWD) will be about celebrating and showcasing our extraordinary talent in the world of Fashion. In turn, Takai hopes FWD will leave a legacy that will support and nurture our fashion stars of tomorrow.

"The concept of this exciting series of shows is to create opportunity for local designers, stylist, make up artist, and talent to truly showcase their skills," continues Takai, "In this glamorous environment, fashionistas, men, women and children alike will enjoy top-of-the-line runway shows and have the opportunity to place orders and interact with the designers."

FWD will highlight the breadth and depth of the talent in the Texas and will position Texas (namely Dallas) as the creative capital we all knew it could be. Among the planned activities, FWD will bring in the world’s most exciting emerging fashion designers to Dallas for the Fashion 2012 International Fashion Showcase. There will also be a major push for Dallas Menswear and an educational project in collaboration with Designing Dreams and FIT.

Takai adds, "Fashion lovers will be in fashion heaven as they spend a stylish week in Dallas soaking up the latest in fashion design."

Designers or their representatives will be available to take orders on the spot. Boutique and specialty fashion buyers, fashion representatives, socialites and corporate sponsors are also sure to enjoy these events. Different designers will be featured at each Fashion Preview, ensuring a new presentation for every audience. And at the end of FWD, attendees will vote for the Top Emerging Designer.

According to James Washington, Publisher of Dallas Weekly newspaper, “In 2012 the eyes of the world will be upon us - we want to show the world that Dallas is the leading force in the global creative sphere. Our fashion reputation is second to none and we will ensure that reputation is showcased and celebrated to the broadest possible global audience and that there are opportunities for the whole of the industry to get involved and participate.”

FWD will officially start on Monday, January 16 2012 at South Side on Lamar with a word from FWD Chair Mahiri Takai. While the bulk of FWD is planned to take place at South Side on Lamar, shows and activities will be scattered around Dallas, including a Wednesday luncheon for buyers and boutique owners.

Last week I attended my ever first fashion show. It was held at Tootsies, a high-end women's boutique in Dallas, and attended by people in an income bracket about eight million billion levels above mine. I felt sorely under-dressed and under-made up, but managed to shake my anxiety off (with the help of a glass of champagne...or two) and snap a few photos.

By far, the most epic (and bizarre) moment of the show was a parade of shirtless hunky male models holding items such as purses, shoes and jewelry as they walked down the runway. Cue audience swooning.

They Are Wearing: Dita Von Teese’s Show
There just might have been more divas in the audience than in the cast at Dita Von Teese’s recent burlesque show, held at House of Blues in Dallas. Revelers channeled their best pin-up girls, embracing snug retro dresses, corsetry, seamed hosiery and feathered hats, not to mention ample tattoos, vixen makeup and cleavage. As for the men, it was all about white suits, black tuxes and fedoras.

Von Teese herself described the crowd as 'super refined'. "People are getting the look and feel right, whereas it used to be, 'OK, so they have black hair or are a little Gothic or fetish-y,'" she said prior to her show. As for her stage outfits, one included a Texas-proud cowgirl look replete with a pink pavé crystal hat, vest, bra and chaps. But she soon, of course, stripped it all down to a glittering pink G-string and pasties.

SPOTLIGHT | What's Your Fashion Status?Interview w/ Designer Sarah Jones

I first met Sarah at a Runway Monday fashion show in January, wearing pieces from her signature line STATUS. The drape, shape, and overall mood of her dress caught my attention for this street fashion snap. She told me she was a fashion designer and I didn't see her again for months.

Fast forward to last week's trunk show, where Sarah was busy zipping back and forth between racks of her clothing and ladies who came into Circa 2000 Menswear not expecting to find something for themselves.

"That long dress has been really popular. It's a great maxi dress and can even go black-tie depending on the accessories."

In between the dressing rooms and racks, talked about starting out as a designer, her line, and the Dallas fashion scene.

~ So how did you start your own fashion line, STATUS?
For design school and different things, a lot times I'd have events to go to and I couldn't find what I want so then there's a number of cocktail dresses I made for myself and everywhere I went [people would ask] "Oh my gosh, where did you get that? Can you make me one?"

~ When did you decide to go from cocktail dresses to ready-to-wear?
I've done bridesmaid dresses, I've done 2 wedding dresses, all for special clients. By no means do I want to become a wedding [designer]... So that's kinda how I went from special occasion and wanting something special and different...

Then how to translate that into a ready-to-wear collection where you will feel special and different in wearing something interesting with some design that people notice, "Hey, I haven't seen that everywhere, walking up and down at every price point."

~ What do you think sets your ready-to-wear collection apart?
The subtle style lines that people appreciate and notice... and that's what's intriguing.

~ How would you describe a STATUS girl?
That's the great thing about [STATUS]. It's a sophisticated urban woman that goes through a lot of different things in her daily life - so she could wear her silk tank with boots but then layer it with another tank and make it a dress for a cocktail evening or dinner.

It all goes back to that dressing up/dressing down thing so she's gonna wear this to events, to see friends, to happy hours and dinners. But a lot of [the pieces], you can make them casual and be that chic, sophisticated I'm-doing-my-grocery-shopping-and-I-look-fabulous.

~ What would be the perfect accessory to pair with your new Fall collection?
Shoes are huge when you're dressed up or down. You can put one of the long dresses with some gladiator sandals and you're boho chic, or you can put on some heels and you're almost black-tie ready...

For the Fall line, depending on the piece... Depending on the look that you're going for... Flat boots is what I'm loving right now - I think it's the opposite of the giant heel - but I don't think there's this one accessory...

~ I've seen you at a couple of events wearing your line - has that been good marketing?
I wear my own clothes all the time for two reasons. The first reason is that's the kind of clothes I like and, again, I try to have something in the line for every occasion.

The second reason is I get stopped everywhere I go... I tell them I make it and you can buy it online or at these boutiques. I think that's growing organically from a marketing standpoint, and it gives me feedback of who's noticing and liking it and under what circumstances.

~How do you see the Dallas fashion scene and where do you think you fit into it?
I love that there is a Dallas fashion scene, that there is this kind of incubation of designers and apprecation for that. I know right now I'm focusing on developing here but also developing my line across the country and expanding from there. {Dallas] is certainly a great place to incubate and I'm excited about all the emerging designers.

I know [local fashion show producer] Jan Strimple has mentioned that you have to give people jobs and the more designers there are based here, the more of those supporting jobs, supporting people will be here, like people for finding hangars to deliver my stuff.

~ Talking about the Dallas fashion scene, do you have any tips for emerging designers in Dallas?
The key is just figuring out a way to design and do something you love, and then find a business way to do it. I think for a lot of people in Dallas, that next step is, "Ok, we're doing these events, these [garments], how do we turn it into a business, a career and a living?"

Not to sound in it just do it for money but, eventually, you'll be doing something else for work and [design] will be a hobby. If you can harness that [design talent] and get with people that are business-minded... I think that's the key to turning so many talented people with all these great ideas and actually making it into an end-product.

@ the Miguel Atkins Fashion Show

It was a dark and stormy night as fashionistas filled fusion restaurant Bengal Coast. Miguel Atkins, in league with BKP Entertainment, was hosting his debut fashion show, which promised to be a little hot and edgy. The evidence wasn't just in the Facebook flyer but his overall album, full of dark yet outrageous details.

Atkins delivered, almost two hours later than expected, a mix of Rihanna and Lady Gaga, and not just for women. Surprisingly, he pushed the envelope by showing menswear inspired by current trends in pop. I'm already a big fan of studs but throw in some denim and black shininess and you got me sold.

The only thing i felt was lacking was the number of pieces. Zara at Northpark donated some menswear for the pre-show, which wasn't out of place considering that the location was geared towards the urban male as was the clothing. But I would have liked more focus on Atkins' collection because it was truly show material.

I apologize for the lack of quality in the photo but my camera wasn't feeling the club atmosphere at Bengal Coast - too dark. I've been trying to contact the photographer to no avail. I will update as soon as I get some good pictures.

@ Sergey Ermakov's USA Debut Show

The Fashionistas did it again. This time, they brought to Dallas the USA debut of Ukrainian haute couture designer Sergey Ermakov. From the first outfit out to the classical music overhead, I could tell that this show would be unlike any of the other shows I'd been to.

The first part seemed like a battle between forces of light and dark - the climax of a fantasy movie where good and evil finally meet. There was a battling juxtaposition between the hard casing of the dresses and the light airy intricacy of the details. Feathers, sequins, lace and beads were instrumental in creating this effect. The strength of the music only amplified it - completely breathtaking.

The fashion show benefited the American Foundation for the Blind and Center on Vision Loss as Sergey himself has lost 95% of his site to diabetes. It's because of that last 5% that he does no like to be called blind. And after seeing these gowns, who could ever believe he is?

The showcase piece of the evening was the Dallas Dress. Sergey is a big fan Dallas and Texas Cowboys so he made a showstopping wedding gown with that theme in mind - valued at over $100,000. His hope is that a Texas bride wears is to her Western-style wedding. I don't know who won the dress so who knows if a Dallas bride will get a chance to wear it.

@ Battle of the Brushes

I recently had the opportunity to judge a local hair styling competition sponsored by Sunsilk. They're going around the country hosting Battle of the Brushes to promote their new line co-created with NYC runway stylist Teddy Charles. In case you're not familiar with Teddy, he recently style the hair on the cover of Teen Vogue.

I arrived at the Battle of the Brushes a little early and watched the stylist set up. Christian Iles in the blue and David Sance in the gray were both from the Perry Henderson Salon. They were chosen by a panel of Dallas' who's-who on style.

Christian actually used the product beforehand and told me he liked how light it was as opposed to other products that can leave hair tacky. He was a bit nervous as anyone would be before a contest, especially when the nature and theme of the contest was announced. The stylist had 15 minutes to do a hair style based on the product Captivating Curls.

Christian started off really strong, shaping large curls and adding volume everywhere he could. David reminded me of a hair samurai, being very quick and precise with both the product and his brush.

During the 15 minutes, Teddy was giving the crowd hair consultations and free Hydra TLC product to the crowd that had gathered. I'm surprised more people didn't come by.

At the end of the 15 minutes, Teddy, Bri Crum of the Fashionistas and I consulted about the looks. Christian did an updo in 15 minutes, which was impressive, but it was frizzy and a little messy.
David, on the other hand, had gone with a casual look of loose curls. It was very light and airy. In the end, we decided on David because his look had an ease about it yet remained polished. He commented, however, on the lack of hold that the product had. He gave his look two hours before it started to frizz.

@ The Northwood Annual Fashion Show

Monica, an old classmate of mine, invited me out to Northwood University for the Fashion Marketing Program's annual fashion show. She will be graduating this semester, having produced the show for the past two years. She was given full authority but a limited budget, but still she knew how to put on a show.

The Fashion Show was split into four scenes. The first one Spring & Summer Trends was pretty straight forward - Blue, lace, girly frills and ruffles.

The second scene, Past Glamour, featured clothing donated from the Michigan Fashion Archives. Certain looks begged the question: why don't we wear this anymore?

The third scene highlighted Prom Shop Project, a local charity that helps girls that cannot afford to buy prom dresses. The dresses on the runway were donations from the girls at Northwood University.

Finally, Monica concluded the show by showcasing her accessories line, Pinkie Promise. When I met her at El Centro, she was already working on the Pinkie Promise purse line - cute and eclectic mixed with trendy shapes.

Now it seems she has added jewelry. I really liked it but her online shop is a bit overdue for the merchandise. *hint hint Monica*

My mom says that a single woman on a limited budget will always work hard to hide the fact that she's on a limited budget. You couldn't tell it was a student production. Monica and the Northwood Fashion Marketing students delivered an clean-cut, professional show. I hope they can keep it up once she's gone next year. I'd be happy to attend again.

And the soundtrack... That was an awesome made-for-runway soundtrack! And I want it!
