Smith Makes Late Race Pass Pay Off in Lima, OH

The last Saturday in June always means rooster tails and white-knuckle motorcycle racing for those who get their kicks on two wheels.

The American Motorcycle Association Pro Flat Track race, held at the Allen County Fairgrounds, has held the same spot on the calendar for upwards of two decades.

Lima 1/2 Mile
- 25 Lap Main Event - AMA Pro Grand National Twins Championship
- June 27, 2009 Allen County Fairgrounds, Lima, OH

Race Time: 11:25.424
Margin of Victory: 0.059
Best Race Lap: Chris Carr (0:26.558)

The AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Twins Championship rolled into Lima, Ohio for round three of the nine race series and for the second year in a row the twenty five lap National would be decided in the waning laps.

The exciting race, at times, featured four to five riders challenging for the lead, but in the end it came down to Michigan neighbors Jared Mees and Bryan Smith battling for the win.

Blue Springs Screamin Eagle's Mees led the most laps, but Screamin' Eagle Moroney's Harley-Davidson's Smith was able to pull out the victory.
"It was just like racing back on the ice, where we spend most of our winters racing each other," said Smith. "I found a better line on the bottom in turns one and two and that's where I made up a lot of ground. That last lap, we got together pretty, but I was able to hang on."

It marked the second time in three races that Smith has crossed the finish line in first, but Smith was striped of his Springfield win because of a slight fuel infraction. There was no such problem this time and the popular Harley rider notched his first "official" win in 2009.

Mees got the hole shot when the eighteen rider hit the first turn and looked to be on his way to his third Lima National win. Seven time AMA Grand National Champion Chris Carr obviously had ideas. The Chris Carr Racing / Lancaster Harley-Davidson backed Carr, who is looking for his 200th Grand National podium, grabbed the lead on lap six and it appeared Carr had much more, than "just" a podium on his mind.

Carr held the front through lap ten, but then Mees grabbed the lead for a lap. Just as quickly Carr had the point back and would hold it through lap thirteen. The lead slipped from Carr's grasp for good on lap fourteen with Mees back up front.

Carr's troubles were far from over as first Smith, then last week's winner, Halbert Family / Kings Kustom's Sammy Halbert got by. All attention was now focused on the leaders as Smith reeled in Mees. Officially Smith would lead the last three laps, but that was only at the finish line as the two fought it out to the end.

Bryan Smith and Jared Mees, two Michigan riders, were running right beside each other along the backside of the 25th and final lap of main event. But in turn three at the Allen County Fairgrounds, the riders went for the same line and there was contact.

Smith nearly went down, but he caught himself and the preferred line. He outgunned Mees to the line for his first feature win in Lima.

Carr's slide was not complete however as 2008 Rookie of the Year, Screamin' Eagle / White's Harley-Davidson's Matt Weidman made a big late race charge to move into fourth, his best GNC finish ever. Memphis Shades' JR Schnabel dropped Carr to sixth on the last lap.

Rogers Lake Racing's Shaun Russell, National Cycle's Brandan Bergen, Eric Snedeker Racing's Ricky Marshall and SuperTrapp's Jake Johnson filled out the top ten.

Honda Oils / Total Control Racing / Woody Kyle Racing's Stephen Vanderkuur led the twelve lap Pro Main into the first turn, but couldn't get turned and the lead went to Weirbach Racing's James Rispoli.

Rispoli was soon joined by veteran racer Zach Palmer and the two fought back and fourth for nine laps, before Vanderkuur recovered and took the lead back for good.

Rispoli and Palmer continued their battle for second with Palmer getting the nod at the end. Mom & Dad backed Kurtis Lee and Total Control Racing / KK Supplies' Chaz Springsteen filled out the top five.

RESULTS

Lucas Oil Indy Mile Producers Announce Spectator Improvements for 2009

When the Lucas Oil Indy Mile AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National was revived in 2008 as a part of the Red Bull Indianapolis GP weekend, thousands of fans packed the legendary course at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis.

On Saturday, August 29, 2009 from 2:00pm to 10:00pm, the second running of the Lucas Oil Indy Mile AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National will again welcome race fans on the Red Bull Indianapolis GP weekend; but with some spectator improvements. For the 2009 event, officials are set to make good on fan-suggested improvements and ensure the overall experience.

The Promotion Company-Family Events produces the Lucas Oil Indy Mile. Mike Moore, Family Events President said:

"We had an overwhelmingly positive first year as the producer of the Lucas Oil Indy Mile; but, it was not perfect. We know from the post-race comments we've received that we need to iron out a few rough spots. The suggestions we've received focus on a few basic issues. We intend to address all of them. We're looking forward to playing host to a huge crowd again on August 29th. The fans last year got to see just what a great show that AMA Pro Flat Track can be. The speed, the close racing, the passing, and the all-out competition are unmatched. We're not going to change any of that. We're just going to take what we learned from our first run and step up our game in accommodating the fans."

Moore announced several specific improvements planned for the 2009 Lucas Oil Indy Mile AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National:

Two jumbo video screens will be used this year. Only one screen was used in 2008. They will be positioned so that Grandstand viewers will have clear sightlines to enjoy the close-up video coverage of the event. Announcer stands, etc. will not block views of the screens.

Traffic and crowd flow will be made smoother for 2009. Fairgrounds staff will be expanded to allow more gates to be open, more staff to park, more ticket sellers, and improved security. These enhancements, along with an earlier gate opening time should speed entrance to the event. Again, bike-only parking will be accommodated on the street behind the grandstand.

More concession stands will be opened for the event to sell food, soft drinks, and beer which should ease any long lines for refreshments.

A safe solution is being developed by the producers, AMA Pro Flat Track officials, and key riders to move the racing line along the main stretch in from the wall. If the riders are moved in, the geometry of the track improves for racing, and fans in the grandstand have a better view of the action. In 2008, plans to move the riders in from the wall had to be largely scrapped when rainy weather left only a brief window for track preparation.

RACING UPDATE: Round 5 - AMA Pro Flat Track GNC

June 21, 2009 - Round five of the AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship returned to Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, Tenn.

D&D Sponsored Chris Carr Gets a Top 10 Finish and Takes 6th

Weeks of rain had left the small bowl of a race track in sketchy condition at best, but hard work by the track crew and the AMA Pro Racing show was able to go on.

A great show it was as Graham, Washington's Sammy Halbert willed his Halbert Family / King's Kustoms backed Harley-Davidson to his first Grand National Twins win. Just seven days ago it appeared Halbert's season may be over as he was in the middle of the horrific accident at the Dayton, Ohio half-mile, but the youngster proved to be very resilient.

Halbert was fast qualifier, won the second fastest heat, pocketed $1,000 and five points in the Dash before out dueling Blue Springs Screamin' Eagle's Jared Mees and Harley-Davidson Motor Company's Kenny Coolbeth.

Oppressive heat and humidity led to the threat of rain and the program was interrupted twice by weather, between the two Pro Singles heats and again during the Pro Singles Main.

Brothers Power Sports' Brad Baker led the twelve lap main from the start and had a comfortable lead over Red Bull / Team 95's JD Beach and Lancaster Harley-Davidson's Shayna Texter when the rain hit on Lap 8. With over sixty percent of the laps run the race was called complete.

The rain did not last long and trucks quickly ironed the track back into shape for the twenty five lap Grand National. Lightning was flashing on the horizon as the nineteen rider field rushed into the first turn. Halbert hustled his Harley to the point with Coolbeth, then Mees pushing for the lead. Mees grabbed the lead on Lap 5 only to have the red lights flash on one lap later.

AJ Eslick had spun down in Turn 2 and although he was trying to wrestle his Harley off the track, it was still on the racing surface, forcing the red.

AJ got his R&D Machine mount back for the restart, but was only able to complete six more laps before dropping out.

Mees picked back up where he left off and looked to be on his way to repeating his 2007 win on the high banked oval, but Halbert had other ideas and regained the lead on lap twelve. All the while the two leaders battled away Coolbeth was positioned to pounce on any mistake. Despite numerous challenges between the three the podium positions were set.

Screamin' Eagle Moroney's Harley-Davidson's Bryan Smith ended up in a distant fourth place with 2008 Rookie of the Year, Mack Daddy Racing's Matt Weidman closing in near the end.

Chris Carr Racing / D&D Peformance Enterprises / Lancaster Harley-Davidson's Chris Carr barely edged SuperTrapp's Jake Johnson for sixth.

Delano Sports Center / Donahue Racing's Jake Mataya, Rogers Lake Racing's Shaun Russell and Action Motorsport's Brandon Robinson filled out the top ten.

Of note on the night, Brian Phillips was able to get the Bonneville Performance Racing Triumph in the team's first National main. Hall's Cycles / Kiesow Racing's Logan Scherb and Team Movin' Mike / TNT Harley-Davidson's Kevin Vance also made their first National mains.

The Pro Singles Point Standings find tonight's winner Brad Baker back on top with 83 points. James Rispoli and JD Beach trail with 76 and 71 points respectively.

Defending Grand National Champion Kenny Coolbeth once again, after two races, leads the chase with 43 points. Jared Mees and Chris Carr follow with 38 and 32.

Coolbeth has also moved into the lead in the overall championship as he has 88 points. Sammy Halbert moves to second with 82, Jared Mees also slipped around previous leader JR Schnabel, 80-78.

LA Raceway in LaMonte, Missouri is a well known 3/8-mile clay track for Sprint cars, Street Stocks, Modifieds, and Hobby Stocks. The track was superbly prepared as a lighting fast motorcycle track for Round 3 of the AMA Pro Flat Track National Hot Shoe Series.

Four AMA Pro National Hot Shoe classes were scheduled, for competition between riders such as seven-time AMA Pro Grand National Champion Chris Carr, current AMA Pro Grand National Champion Kenny Coolbeth, this year's Springfield Mile Pro Singles winner Michael Toon and last week's National Hot Shoe Pro Singles winner Shayna Texter.

More than 3,000 fans filled the grandstands for an evening of flat track motorcycle racing at its best.

Toon, one of the hottest Pro Single riders in the country right now, chalked up yet another win aboard the No. 22L Price Truck Line Honda CRF450R in the Pro Singles main over D&D Sponsored Corby Scherb on the No. 32N SSR/Chico Racing Honda CRF450R. Texter rounded out the top three aboard the No. 25A Lancaster Suzuki RM-Z450.

In the Pro Twins main event things got turned around a bit with Corby Scherb on the No. 32N SSR/Chico Racing Harley-Davidson taking the win over Texter, who made her twins debut on the No. 25A Lancaster Harley-Davidson. Jeff Carver, aboard the No. 24P Stevens Racing Suzuki, finished third.

Running in the Expert Singles class puts D&D Sponsored Chris Carr out of familiar territory, having won all of his Grand National Championships on specialized flat track framed motorcycles.

"These new kids coming up have much more experience than I do riding these production bikes," said Carr, arguably the most dominate rider in the country in past AMA Pro Grand National seasons.

However, Carr proved that skill can make up for a lack of experience in the production class, as his Kenny Tolbert-tuned Honda proved untouchable in the Expert Singles main event.

Carr rode his No. 4 Chris Carr Racing/DFW Honda CRF450R to the win over Jared Mees and his No. 21 Pro Honda Oils Honda CRF450R, with Sammy Halbert pushing his No. 43 Halbert Family Yamaha YZF450 to the limit for third.

The Expert Twins main event resembled more of an AMA Pro Grand National than a Hot Shoe, including top riding talent such as Coolbeth, Carr, Mees, Shaun Russell and JR Schnabel.

Riding the No. 28 Rogers/Lake Racing Harley-Davidson, Shaun Russell took the win in the 12-lap final. Mees' No. 22 Blue Springs/Screaming Eagle Harley-Davidson took second over No. 33 Memphis Shades/Parts Unlimited Harley-Davidson mounted Schnabel. The only non Harley-Davidson in the main event was Michael Kirkness on the No. 87 Yeager's Cycle Suzuki, who finished a well respected seventh.

Harley-Davidson XR1200 HOP UP KIT

NEW 2-1 Bobcat for the 2009 XR1200

Twist the throttle and hug the hairpin… the XR1200 hits hard like a Harley-Davidson XR750 dirt track racer and D&D Performance Enterprises has just the added accessory… full throated exhaust system with the new Bob Cat pipe that delivers the Harley boom and performance at a reduced sound signature.

Increase power, improve tone and pump out the Power

D&D has partnered with Zipper’s to create an XR1200 performance kit that lights a fire under the air-cooled, silver powdercoated 1,200cc Evolution V-twin engine. The results? Canyon carving power that punches up the Torque and Horsepower by as much as 12%. Results with other tuners may vary.

D&D’s new Concentric Flow Baffle System reduces the sound signature of the pipe and increases performance. It was designed in conjunction with the Engineering Department at the University of Texas at Arlington.

D&D Pipe Options

Part # 551-31 A – Black pipe and end cap with aluminum sleeve.
Part # 551-31 B – Black pipe and end cap with black sleeve.
Part # 551-31 C – Black pipe and end cap with carbon sleeve.

Our new upswept 2 into 1 Bob Cat pipe is offered in Aluminum sleeve, Black sleeve or Carbon sleeve.

DYNO Duty

Long nights and hundreds of dyno runs assisted in creating the perfect pipe that reduces the bark yet delivers plenty of bite.

The second half of the kit is the Zipper’s Thunder-Max with Auto Tune, which allows you to install and tune the motorbike in less time than it takes to eat lunch. The EFI replacement electronically learns your motor configuration and tunes the XR1200 while you are riding it.

Chris Carr Signs With D&D Exhaust

D&D Performance Enterprises is happy to announce a sponsorship agreement with Chris Carr Racing for the 2009 season.

D&D designs and builds special race-tuned exhaust systems for Carr's Harley-Davidson XR750 and Honda 450cc motorcycles.

Chris Carr Biography

He turned pro in 1985, earned rookie of the year honors, and finished seventh in the final points standings. His first Grand National Race victory came at the age of 19, and in 1986 finished fourth in the points chase and continued to improve each year until securing the 1992 Grand National Championship.

Chris competed full-time until 1995, when he finished third in the Grand National Dirt Track Championship, while at the same time earning rookie of the year honors competing in the AMA Superbike class, a class which he chose to pursue full time in the 1996 and 1997 season.

Championships, Chris has won the 1992, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005 Grand National Championship, a series competed on “750cc” motorcycles. In addition Chris also competed in the “600 Series”, winning seven Championships, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1995 and won the 2000 Formula USA Dirt Track Championship.

He was in contention for the 2006 Grand National Championship in the final race of the year at Scioto Downs in Columbus Ohio, before dropping out with rare mechanical problems, and finishing tied for fourth in the points that season.

In 2007 and 2008 Chris had a strong season just coming up a few points short of securing another Grand National Championship finishing third in the points. Both years He will return to the 2009 season looking to regain that form that has made him a champion and one of the most exciting racers to watch.

Land Speed Record, On September 5, 2006 Chris Carr broke the land speed record on a motorcycle at the Bonneville Salt Flats with a two-pass run averaging 350.8 mph. His fastest run was 354 mph and his successful run was established aboard the BUB’S racing “Number Seven Streamliner”. Chris remains the fastest man in the world on two wheels…and this record is recorded in the 2008 edition of the Guinness book of world records.

Educational Activities, Chris has ownership in American Super-camp, a nationally renowned dirt track school available to those looking to improve their skills, which are taught on 100cc motorcycles.

Off-Track Activities, Chris enjoys teaching, reading and golf as well as spending time with his family.

Sponsors Chris has been a tremendous spokes person for the sport and those sponsors involved since his career began, from 2002 through the 2007 seasons, The Ford Motor Company division, Quality Checked Certified Pre-owned was team sponsor for Chris Carr Racing as well as title sponsor for the series, 2005 through 2007. Chris is as dedicated to his sponsors as he is to his racing. Fords successful sponsorship ended at the conclusion of the 2007 season, creating new sponsor opportunities with “Chris Carr Racing” whom will be looking to fulfill for the upcoming 2008 and 2009 seasons.

From a recent article published by Cycle News Magazine…

“Quality Checked Certified Pre-Owned Ford has been Chris' main backer for the past six years and the collaboration was mutually beneficial. Chris continued to win and Ford had an effective and articulate spokesman on the dirt track trail.

But on the same day Ford pulled their series sponsorship, they also withdrew their support of Chris. It wasn’t for lack of results. Rather it was due to the current restructuring at Ford Motor Company.

Chris said a shift in the distribution of funds within the company prevented the partnership from continuing. He also said that from the beginning of the program, back in 2002, it has provided measurable results. In conjunction with a Detroit-based marketing company, iCMS, a program was put in place to track and measure the effectiveness of sponsoring his team, and later of Ford as the series sponsor.

In all six seasons, the partnership was able to produce a positive measure of Ford’s association with Chris Carr Racing,” Carr said and he hopes another sponsor will see that as he searches for sponsorship for the 2009 - 2010 seasons”.

The 2009 Season

The 2009 season has scheduled 25 races, starting in March and ending in October, which includes stops in the Northwest, Northeast, Southwest and Southeast areas of the country, cities like Daytona, Florida, Indianapolis, Indiana and Springfield, Illinois, play host to some of the largest venues in the dirt track racing industry.

Chris Carr has enjoyed a relationship with his fans over the years, which have kept many returning to the races and it’s this recognition that has attracted many sponsors.

By supporting Dirt Track Racing many companies find they keep its trusted brand connected with customers and more of the activities they enjoy. Dirt Track Racing offers a chance to be associated with motor sports at a fraction of the cost compared to NASCAR…

AMA Grand National Championship History, Prior to 1954, the fast and smooth Springfield Mile at the Illinois State Fairground was the nation’s focal point for flat track racing and although riders competed at race tracks around the country, the Springfield Mile remained the most prestigious event, a 25 mile race,

Which also determined the coveted AMA National Dirt Track Champion. This venue still a major race on the circuit, has been won by Chris Carr 12 times out of the last 23 seasons and to this day Springfield remains Dirt Track Racing’s “Daytona 500”.

Following the 1954 season, AMA announced the establishment of a Grand National Championship series, consisting of point paying races.

AMA produces some of the most exciting racing events in the country, and they are one of the world’s largest motor sports sanctioning body. Its AMA Pro Racing division oversees more than 80 professional championship-racing events all over the United States, on and off road.

Chris was the dominant rider in the AMA Grand National Championship during the early 2000s. Through the 2005 season, the Northern California native had won seven national championships and was second on the AMA Grand National all-time wins list. He rode for Harley-Davidson as a factory rider for much of his early career, but gained the majority of his success as a private team owner. He was also one of the few riders in his era of Grand National racing to attract major corporate sponsorship, being backed by Ford Motor Company.

Growing Up Chris Carr

Chris was born on May 6, 1967, in Stockton, California. His father was an amateur racer and put young Chris on a motorcycle at an early age. He lived only a few miles from the Lodi Cycle Bowl, which spawned the racing career of many top riders. His parents were members of the Lodi Motorcycle Club and young Chris (an only child) practiced countless hours on the track and began racing at the age of 6. His first racer was a 38cc Moto Villa. He counted Alex Jorgensen and Kenny Roberts his heroes as a kid.

He progressed through the junior ranks chasing older Northern California riders such as Doug Chandler and Fred Merkel. By the time he was 17, Chris had earned numerous Northern California and national amateur championships and was already turning lap times comparable to the top pros.

In 1985, Chris turned pro and embarked on his rookie season in the AMA Grand National Championship. He showed great promise in his debut. In his first national, the Houston Astrodome TT, he scored a ninth-place finish. It was but a preview of things to come. In his first pro season, he tallied a slew of top-10 finishes, including podium results at the San Jose Short Track and Peoria TT Nationals. He finished ranked seventh in the championship and was named AMA Flat Track Rookie of the Year.

He has continued to climb the ladder in 1986, his sophomore pro season, taking fourth in the final Grand National standings and scoring his first national win in August of that year in the Peoria TT. It would mark the first of many wins at Peoria for Chris. He became so dominant at the historic race in the 1990s he became known as the “Prince of Peoria.”

“I remember in my rookie year I finished third at Peoria behind Ricky (Graham) and Bubba (Shobert) and realized I needed to be in better shape to run that pace,” Chris said. “The next year, I came back better prepared. The Woods Rotax kept getting better too, and by then I think it was better than the factory Hondas. I cut some blazing laps that year and won my first national fairly easily.”

His steady climb continued as he scored two wins in 1987 and then finished third in the final AMA Grand National Series standings in 1988. He was made a full-fledged Harley-Davidson factory rider in 1989. In 1990, he nearly reached the pinnacle, holding the points lead longer than anyone else that season. But an engine failure in the Labor Day Springfield (Illinois) Mile took him out of the series lead. He was unable to match Harley teammate Scott Parker's late-season drive and had to settle for the runner-up spot in the final standings.

In 1991, it was even closer between Carr and Parker. The two tied in the final standings, but Parker won the title based on more national wins.

In 1992, Chris' time finally came and he scored his first AMA Grand National Championship, taking four national wins along the way. He was by now becoming a complete rider, winning on Miles, Half-Miles, Short Tracks and TT courses. Only 5’ 5” and 135 pounds, he developed a unique riding style, learning to finesse his race bikes rather than muscle them.

“I always felt if you could find a way to use less energy that it would pay off in the closing laps of tight races,” Chris said of his finely tuned technique.

In 1993, he lost his title to a red-hot Ricky Graham and in 1994 Parker again nipped him by a scant three points.

Chris was offered the opportunity to compete in the AMA Superbike Championship in 1995 as part of the Harley-Davidson factory team. That year, he contested both the AMA Grand National and Superbike Championships and still managed a third in the Grand National Series, despite focusing on road racing. Harley-Davidson’s VR1000 Superbike proved to be underpowered against its competition, yet Chris did an admirable job as a road racer. He won AMA Superbike Rookie of the Year in 1995 and in 1996 gave Harley-Davidson its lone AMA Superbike pole, topping qualifying at the Pomona (California) round. His best Superbike result came in 1996, a fifth on the factory Harley at Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma, California.

Also in 1995, he earned a record seventh AMA 600cc Dirt Track Championship, making him the all-time king of the single-cylinder dirt track racing class.

The 1998 season marked a return to the AMA Grand National Championship for Chris after a two-year absence. Early in the season he split his time doing select road races in addition to his full Grand National schedule. He had a notable runner-up road race finish in the Laguna Seca Formula Xtreme race aboard a Muzzy Kawasaki. He again led the Grand National Flat Track Series most of the season, but was caught by rival Parker in the closing races and lost the title by two points.

He again led the Grand National Flat Track Series most of the season, but was caught by rival Parker in the closing races and lost the title by two points.

The turning point in the long Carr/Parker rivalry came in 1999. Chris, now running as a privateer, dominated the season, scoring nine podium finishes, including five wins. Chris finally dethroned Parker in what he calls his most satisfying championship.

“Scotty and I pushed each other throughout our careers and raised the level of competition,” Carr explained. “He was six years ahead of me in experience and gained a lot of speed during the years of him chasing the factory Hondas. It was also a Mile-dominated series during much of that era and Scott was a master of strategy on the Miles. It took me a while to discover the nuances of winning on the Miles. By ’99, I was at the top of my game and it was very gratifying to win the championship in a dominant fashion.”

After a short sojourn winning the Formula USA Dirt Track Series in 2000, Chris returned full time to AMA Grand National racing in 2001 to begin one of the most commanding runs in AMA Grand National history, winning every AMA Grand National Championship from 2001 through 2005, including the 50th anniversary season of the championship in 2004. Tuner extraordinaire, Kenny Tolbert, built Chris' bikes during this fruitful period.

Chris was named AMA Pro Athlete of the Year in 2003 and persevered to become the second-winningest rider in AMA Grand National Championship history. In 2002, Chris brought Ford Motor Company on board as his team’s sponsor, marking one of the few times a major corporation backed an AMA Grand National team during that era.

Chris continues to race and run his racing team. He and wife Pamela are raising their two sons, Cale and Cameron, in eastern Pennsylvania.

Building The TransAlp Racer - A Middleweight Adventure Sportsbike

Overview: Start with an old Honda Transalp: give it a heart transplant, hop-up the new donor engine, custom build an exhaust pipe, grab a refurbished swing arm, install new forks and fabricate rear disc brakes, pressure wash and the final touch is aerosol paint… go racing.

We caught up with Dave Jansen of Combustion Cycle at his shop in Durham, NC to see how his project was coming along.

Out with the Old

 Old Engine is Benched

The original Transalp engine is a liquid-cooled, six-valve, four-stroke, 52 degree V-twin. It made approximately 50HP.

The D&D Performance Enterprises Exhaust Connection
Dave sells D&D performance pipes at his independent dealership and got together with the lead engineer, Aaron Whitney of D&D, to assist him in developing a pipe for the motorbike.

Since Jansen transplanted the engine with the Honda Hawk, Aaron didn't have a standard pipe to fit the bike.

He put together a selection of pipe pieces including multiple pipe bends, straight pieces and a collector, which allows Jansen to fabricate his own custom pipe.

Pipe is Measured Twice then Cut

D&D sent some off-the-shelf parts as well as some specific bends for Jansen's racer.

D&D Bends Pipe to Specific Lengths

After the pipe is cut, it is then bent to size.

After Cuts & Welds the Pipe is Ground Smooth

It's important to make sure that the interior of the pipe is smooth as it improves exhaust gas flow.

As we walked into Combustion Cycles the race bike was on the lift with the new engine bolted in.

Tacking the Pipe

Dave is shown here tacking his new exhaust system together while it is on the motorcycle.
