“My first contact with the life story of Dan Eldon was in April, 1996. I was en route back from New Bern, North Carolina where I had been researching The Notebook, a week spent with, (then, as yet, unpublished author), Nicholas Sparks. Since Shine‘s world premiere at Sundance in January that year, I had been inundated with offers to work from Hollywood. The Notebook, (still in galley form), was the only one I found that really appealed to me at that time.

I am pretty choosy when it comes to writing projects. I also like to focus on only one project at a time. With my head brimful of notes and ideas for adapting The Notebook, I had decided not to take any meetings in LA en route back to Australia. But my agent rang and said there was a project she thought might appeal to me. A very special project. A meeting was proposed, not with a studio or producer, but with the mother of a young photographer who was killed in Somalia less than three years earlier, while on his first assignment for Reuters.

Kathy Eldon lived up the street from the hotel where I was staying. She had seen Shine at a private screening for executives at Columbia Pictures. The studio had just optioned Dan Eldon’s life story. I was told Dan had created some dazzling journals that Kathy kept at her apartment on Sunset Plaza Drive. Would I like to see them at least? Even though I decided I didn’t want to take any meetings, it was just around the corner, it wouldn’t take long and by this stage, I was intrigued to know more.

I ended up spending over six hours with Kathy, pouring over Dan’s seventeen journals late into the night. I was hooked, and decided there and then I would write the screenplay for the Dan Eldon Project right after I finished The Notebook. I had no idea of the amazing journey it would take me on, or the people I’d meet as a result; but in a lot of ways, it became a key part of my life over many, many years. And it still is.

Dan Eldon crammed more into his twenty-two years than most people do in a lifetime. It was as if he knew his time on earth was limited. Despite the tragic circumstances of his death, I knew this could be an uplifting film – it had to be – one that celebrated Life and shoed that people can make a difference. That’s what Dan did. And he inspired everyone he came in touch with in one way or another to do the same. Now his life had touched mine.

And so I set out to retrace the people and the places in Dan’s life. This was before the book of Dan’s journals – The Journey is the Destination – was published. Kathy had given me some research, a map of Dan’s life if you will. But I wanted to do my own research, to get a feel for the kind of person he was from those who knew him best. To go where he’d grown up, to the places where he’d lived his life. It became more than a writing assignment, it became an obsession.

I met Mike Eldon, Dan’s father in Kenya where I spent hours in the Reuters’ bureau. I tracked down journalists who had been in Somalia with Dan on his first and only assignment, including Corinne Dufka. I spent time with his friends, and stayed at the house of his best mate Lengai outside of Nairobi. We went to the Carnivore, (a crazy disco), and I dined at the very elite Muthaiga Club with Mike Eldon. I gave a talk at Dan’s old school and I went on Safari. I spent an amazing afternoon with Dan’s Massai family, with the woman he called his Massai mother, Kipinget. (Mike Eldon and I ended up sponsoring two Massai boys through school in honor of Dan). And finally, I visited the ‘circle of stones’ where Dan’s ashes are scattered, in the Rift Valley.

In London, I met with Dan’s grandmother and aunt, and more friends who had been on ‘Mission Mozambique’ with Dan. I spent a harrowing couple of hours with Mohammed Shaffi. A Reuters television cameraman, ‘Mo’ was the last to speak to Dan and the only journalist who had survived of the five that went to report on the bombing of the compound in Mogadishu that fateful day. I had seen the footage Mo had taken before the mob turn don the journalists. He had been shot twice but managed to get away. A sweet, sensitive man, he was still tortured by guilt. His life was clearly devastated by what had happened and I was saddened to learn of his death a few years later.

In LA, I met Dan’s younger sister, Amy, for the first time. Kathy had told me Amy had not spoken about Dan’s death and so I knew I needed to tread carefully. It had been like that with so many of Dan’s friends and family, in particular Mike and Kathy. But my interview with Amy – the very last on my months long journey to piece together Dan’s life – was the most difficult. Afterwards, Amy wrote me the most beautiful, personal note entrusting me with Dan’s life story. I have it still, along with Dan’s belt and compass she gave me to help me ‘find my way.’

I wrote numerous drafts of The Eldon script over the next three years. then in 1999, Bronwen Hughes became attached as director and we worked together – as writer and director – to prepare the shooting script for the film we al hoped would be greenly by the studio, Columbia Pictures.

But it never happened, even though the project had attracted the interest of the likes of Leonardo Di Caprio, Christian Bale and Heath Ledger, (who was yet to become a big star). Regrettably, the studio mentality was shifting from dramas like this to making monster films like Godzilla, with Spiderman waiting in the wings. The trend for big franchise and special effects films had just begun.

Kathy reacquired the rights and over the years since has kept the dream of Dan’s film alive. Bronwen has played a big part in this, her life touched by the spirit of Dan Eldon like mine. I did another pass on the script in 2004 for Kathy, to try and help move the project along, but I have not been involved creatively since. I am excited and thrilled now that the project has come full circle back to me in a way that I may be involved once again, and help bring The Journey is the Destination to the screen. It is a film that just has to be made!

Greg Giles, a high school art teacher at the International School in Bucharest, Romania, recently shared his Grade 10 student’s artwork – all inspired by Dan’s journals. Greg has worked in schools in Tanzania, Ecuador, and is traveling to Addis Ababa this summer.

Built into the curriculum, “Students engage in a viewing of his [Dan’s] journal pages and a critique of the works, followed by the creation of a series of works which ultimately end up in book form. It seems that of all the projects we do, the students are most proud of the finished products for this particular assignment. They are not only touched by Dan, but they are also thrilled to find out more about themselves and to see that in such an expressive form.”

Scroll down to see the incredible Dan-inspired works of art!

There is a chilling image at the end of this short clip of a Somali child wielding an AK-47, hand-fashioned from wire, which mirrors an image Dan captured of a starving boy holding a similar toy gun back in 1993. Watch how our director, Bronwen Hughes, rehearses Ben Schnetzer, playing Dan, and a babble of young actors before a lovely scene that captures the playful nature of Dan’s relationship with the children. Yesterday we shot in a Somali area of Joburg, where I met a mother of 12 children, six of whom had been raped after arriving in South Africa. Another woman wept in my arms as she described how she had lost her husband, mother and father in a raid by Al Shabab in Kismaya in 2004, and a young man explained how he been kicked out of four countries after escaping with only the clothes on his back following a raid by Islamic Insurgents a few years ago.My heart went out to the Somalis, whose opportunities are severely limited in South Africa, a country that is unfortunately known for its zenophobic attitudes towards foreigners, even refugees from oppressive countries. At one point, a cluster of Somali women, all with their faces covered, surrounded me. One after one, they peeled back their scarves, giggling at my delighted response. Most said they didn’t want to wear veils that, in some cases, made it almost impossible to speak, but their husbands insisted on it. According to my Somali friends, back in 1993, almost no one was veiled. As much as we would like to have the costumes in our film historically accurate, the women are afraid to be seen unveiled. Today we will make a plan for how we can help a Somali refugee center in Joburg. I’ll let you know more!

Barely contained chaos epitomized our shoot with 100 Somali extras on the JOURNEY set yesterday. I know how much Dan loved his proud and determined Somali friends, and I also know how volatile they can be on occasion. Amy and I witnessed this characteristic when we visited Mogadishu to shoot “Dying to tell the Story” back in 1997, and barely escaped a potentially deadly confrontation when we ventured back to the site where Dan and his three friends were killed. As a result, I was apprehensive when we arrived at our location, designed to replicate a feeding station in Mogadishu in 1992 which fed hundreds of starving people. And in truth, it was a tense day on set, one which left me feeling quite disturbed. According to all reports, it’s tough being a non-South African in this country where refugees are not appreciated and “zenophobia” is a word you see on billboards as something to combat, so perhaps it’s not surprising that many of the Somalis we hired seemed quite defensive and on guard throughout the long day, punctuated by prayer breaks. I hope they will feel more relaxed and safe during the days to come, when we will be shooting the challenging combat scenes that take place in Mogadishu, which will be re-created three hours outside Joburg. During the next three weeks I hope to find a way that Creative Visions Foundation can assist a Somali Community Center in Pretoria to help their members help themselves. I know that’s something Dan would have liked us to do. When he and his friends were killed, I understood why the survivors of the mortar attack were so enraged-and why they lashed out at the people they thought were responsible. I used to wonder what I might have done had I witnessed the death of my son, brother or father. I like to think I wouldn’t have picked up a stone or a stick, but I don’t know.

I’m not telling you where or why this happened…you have to come and see the film for it to make sense. Watch for the Green screen in this video, which reveals the swirl and chaos behind the scenes for the cast, crew and fascinated passers-by. I still watch Dan/Ben and marvel at how lucky I am to be viewing twin spirits inhabit this magical story about young people for whom life presented tantalizing challenges that led them far from the familiar as they learned first-hand the difference between being lost and exploring.

I loved being in a working newspaper office, though it needed little dressing to make it look like it must have in the 1980’s. It felt as though time has stood still in the building, which made me want to take over a desk and reclaim my old life as a journalist in Africa. I spent eight years in and out of the Nation Newspaper in Kenya, and wrote hundreds of articles, including weekly restaurant reviews and cookery columns which earned me the epithet, “The Iron Stomach.” My family got hepatitis from my adventures in River Road…

We don’t have to travel to help people help themselves. And it feels good to know that we have left even one life better because we have lived. (Thank you Ralph Waldo Emerson.)

At the age of 18, Elly participated in the Student Transport Aid Safari that Dan led across Africa to deliver aid to a Refugee camp in Malawi. Actually, Elly (now owner of the Amsterdam News, feels lucky to be played by this extraordinary young woman who plans to crusade for the rights of women and girls in South Africa and beyond. These two strong, beautiful and intelligent women are eerily similar!
