Introduction

Singapore Boat Quay, located on the southern bank of the upstream portion of the Singapore River, is a place of historical importance that dates back to the 1860s. Though Boat Quay no longer plays any role in the aquatic trade, the old structures have been preserved carefully. At present, this place offers plentiful of entertainment facilities by way of several restaurants and bars.

What's the history of Singapore Boat Quay?

Though you may get turned off when we talk about history but you can't deny the fact that knowing the past of a place helps us to understand it better and know how the place has evolved to what it is today.

Since 1819, the Singapore River was a busy place which remained abuzz with several economic and trading activities. The southern bank of this river where most of these activities happened was (and still is) called Boat Quay.

During the 1820s, the area of Boat Quay that was swampy in nature was rebuilt with the earth of a little hill where the then Commercial Square was situated. The place in those days was occupied by traders from the neighborhood. Now, this place is home to Raffles Place.

As designated by Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore, the construction of Singapore Boat Quay was finished in 1842. Mostly Chinese laborers and traders in large numbers made this place their home. Boat Quay flourished at a rapid pace. The volume of trade that occurred at the Singapore Boat Quay even exceeded that of the northern bank where the traders from Europe had their offices.

In those days, Boat Quay was the location where Singapore's most important trading offices were situated. At the busiest hours, bumboats would struggle to get space at Boat Quay. Coolies and lighters carried goods from the ships while the traders were busy buying and selling varied items like tin, rubber, steel, coffee, rice and some other manufactured merchandise.

However, the fortune of Singapore Boat Quay took a plunge during the 1960s when the introduction of mechanization and computerized systems took over its leading role in the aquatic trade.

With the opening of technology driven Pasir Panjang in September 1983, the river trade at Boat Quay took a beating. From there, it was a journey downhill. However, the Urban Redevelopment Authority prepared a plan in 1986 to preserve Boat Quay.

On July 1989, the shophouses (two- and three-storey) of Singapore Boat Quay were preserved, along with their upper floors that had a unique projection. These shophouses were converted into businesses based on certain new ideas. During the 1990s, the shophouses and godowns were restored. These are now locations of busy restaurants, shops and bars - an indispensable part of the Singapore nightlife.

Singapore is famous for being the cleanest city in the world. Tourists will be astonished and impressed by the strict rules and regulations formed by the Singapore government. There are many posters in buildings and parks telling people what they should do, what they shouldn't do and how much they will be fined if they break the rules. That is the reason why Singapore is called "the fine city".

The Singaporean government wants to establish a clean and green country where all citizens are well educated and are considerately to others. Therefore they have set many strict rules as well as put a lot of instructions and reminders in public places so that people always remember what they aren't allowed to do and everything is orderly. Children are taught at school and in their family, right from very early ages, about what they should do and how to behave in this society.

If you are a tourist visiting Singapore, you should be considerate and pay attention to every one of your actions. There are many things considered normal in your country but which are illegal in Singapore. You will be fined heavily if you litter or smoke in public places. Also remember to flush public toilets after using it so that you aren't fined S$500.

It is summer and you enjoy lying on the beach sunbathing. However, if you are in Singapore, you mustn't go nude or topless when sunbathing, even if it is your own back yard. It is forbidden in Singapore and you will be fined if you're caught doing that.

Chewing gum is not forbidden in Singapore but bringing gum into the country in large amount is illegal and the gum seller can be sent to jail. Therefore, be careful with what you bring to Singapore. Drugs are strictly forbidden in Singapore. People trafficking, manufacturing, importing or exporting more than 15g of heroin, 30g of morphine, 30g of cocaine, 500g of cannabis, 200g of cannabis resin and 1.2kg of opium are sentenced to death. Possessing these amounts is also regarded as trafficking and equals a death penalty. Therefore you must not get involved in drugs in Singapore by any means.

Thanks to the strict laws of Singapore, this country is very safe and orderly. There is virtually no crime, no corruption and you are safe even when walking alone at night. There may be some pickpockets in crowded places. However, they are rare unlike any other Asian countries.

Every year a large number of tourists are fined during their stay in Singapore because they are unaware of the strict rules and regulations. You should read about its rules and regulations carefully before going there and be aware of every board, poster or sign you see. Being a decent person and showing your respect to others, you won't encounter any problems and will have an enjoyable stay in this clean country.

The Horses Have Landed!!!

Welcome to Terengganu!!

The Orgainsing Committee wishes the riders, grooms, Chef d' Equipes and Officials who have arrived in Terengganu a warm welcome. It feels great to finally see people from all around the world gathered here in the Terengganu International Endurance Park (TIEP) for the FEI WEC 2008.

Besides the very important people participating in this prestigous championship, we have also recieved the arrival of the most fundamental aspect of the championship, which are the horses.

53 horses from Oman, Australia, Malaysia, Chile, Japan, Canada, Colombia, Argentina, Uruguay, Great Britain, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, France, South Africa and Norway have safely arrived at TIEP.

Some of the horses had to go through a 13 hour non stop flight from Amsterdam just to be here!

We are excited to see that the stables are now slowly being filled with the horses and we can't wait to recieve the other horses which are expected to arrive on 20 and 22 October.

To all the riders, grooms, Chef d' Equipes and Officials, don't be afraid to ask us for kind of assistance. We hope you enjoy your stay here in sunny Terengganu and we wish you all the best!

FEI World Endurance Championship 2008

The FEI World Endurance Championship 2008 (“WEC 2008”) will be held at The Terengganu International Endurance Park in Terengganu, Malaysia.

Situated a few kilometers from the South China Sea, the venue offers visitors and competitors the best of Malaysia's natural beauty and hospitality, as well as:

First class stabling and quarantine areas for horses
Excellent trails, groomed for a safe, yet challenging Endurance competition
Sheltered cooling and crewing stations and vetting area
Spectator-friendly viewing areas
Hospitality and refreshment centers

The course is designed to provide a safe yet challenging competition, taking riders along the stunning coast line, through palm plantations, along canal banks and through natural vegetation forests. A long and wide stretch of track provides ample space for the start of the competition and egress from the venue, and for a safe finish line and entry back into the Endurance Park.

Celebrating the New Year

The Chinese legend says that in ancient times there was a strange beast called "nian" with a long head and sharp horn and it was extremely fierce. "Nian" dwelled deep in the sea the whole year, but on every New Year's Eve it would climb onto the shore to devour livestock and harm humans. Because of it, on every New Year's Eve, all the villagers would go deep into the mountains to hide from harm from "nian."

On New Year's eve one year, as the people were all busy collecting their possessions in preparation for their retreat to the mountains, a grey haired man appeared (who they later learned was a deity who came to help them). He said he would chase the beast away in one night but no one believed him.

When the beast arrived at the village to wreck havoc as usual, it was met with a sudden sound of exploding firecrackers. "Nian" was shivering all over and dared not proceed any further as it was most frightened by red color, flames, and explosive sounds. At that moment the large door opened wide and the old man, wearing red clothes, laughed heartily. "Nian" was startled and fled! The villagers found three precious items the old man used to chase away the beast. Since then on New Year's eve families would hang up red banners, set off fire crackers, and light their lamps, awaiting the New Year.

The Lantern Festival

Every year on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, Chinese people celebrate the traditional Lantern Festival.

The first month of the lunar calendar is known as the "yuan" month, and the ancient Chinese people call nights "xiao," so the fifteenth day of the first lunar month is known as the "Yuan Xiao Festival" (also known as the Lantern Festival). That night is the first full moon of the year and that is also the first night when spring returns to the great earth. From historical recordings, it is known that people in the Western Han Dynasty (206 to 6 BC) were already celebrating the "Lantern Festival."

During the Lantern Festival, people light lanterns in different colors and designs for others to admire.

The Dragon Boat Festival

The fifth day of the fifth lunar month is a traditional Chinese holiday known as the Dragon Boat Festival.

More than two thousand years ago, during the period of the Spring-Autumn Warring States, the Chinese people celebrated the Dragon Boat Festival. According to historians, the Dragon Boat Festival originated from the totem festival in the state of Wuyue in southern China. But people generally attribute the holiday as a memorial to the Chinese poet Qu Yuan, who was a Minister in the State of Chu during the Spring-Autumn period.

The Mid-Autumn Festival (15th day of the eighth lunar month)

The Mid-Autumn Festival day is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month annually. It takes place in the middle of autumn and is hence known as "the mid-autumn festival." The moon on that night is said to be the roundest and brightest of the entire year. Hence it is also known as the "Eighth Month Festival." People traditionally gather that night to look at the brilliant moon and think of their relatives far away. Therefore the mid-autumn festival is also known as "the Reunion Festival."

The round moon cakes symbolize the fulfillment of their hope for the family reunion.

The Winter Solstice

The Winter Solstice is a very important day, marking one of the 24 divisions in the Chinese calendar year. There are still many places in China that observe the Winter Solstice or Winter Festival.

The Winter Solstice is the day in the whole year where the day is shortest and the night is the longest in the northern hemisphere. The celebration began in the Han Dynasty.

The Track

The track, which runs through Singapore's famed Marina Bay area and traverses landmarks like Raffles Boulevard and the Fullerton Hotel, is just over 5 km in length and encompasses streets lined with modern high-rise buildings on the one side and elegant, colonial mansions on the other.

The entire circuit has been re-surfaced for the long-awaited event and the latest addition to the track is a $40 million state-of-the-art pit building. Remarkably, the pits are a three-storey structure erected on Marina Promenade and house 36 garages for the race teams and facilities for the media.

The Lighting

The one aspect of the race that has caused the most consternation is, of course, the lighting. Imagine the adrenaline pumping speed of the world's fastest cars, the skill of the world's fastest drivers and the glamour associated with Formula One. That is what the Formula One Grand Prix at Sepang Malaysia is all about; it is perhaps too good to be true, never has such a combination of almost everything one would want on a holiday been so perfectly incorporated into one package.

The Malaysian Sepang racing circuit has lauded by racing pundits as being hyper modern even by lofty F1 standards. The Malaysian Grand Prix was added to the Formula One calendar in 1999 though FIA sanctioned racing events were worked off here since the 1960's. So far nine races have been held here and each one was heralded by drivers and the crowd as being highly competitive and interesting. The freak weather that is experienced in the tropics provides adds an extra dimension to racing in Sepang. Drivers may experience clear skies and sunny weather one moment only to endure a rainstorm in a few minutes.

One such incident was in 2001 when the race was hit by a severe rainstorm when the drivers were halfway through the race. This called for a dramatic change of tactics by the teams and also for different driving style by the drivers. The ensuing conditions caused the two Ferraris to spin off the tracks and in a thrilling climax they made a remarkable recovery to be complete a Ferrari one-two. The Malaysian Grand Prix which was earlier held at the end of the season was later moved to the beginning and this year's race was won by reigning Champion Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari.

The Malaysian Grand Prix is also known to be preceded by a few off-track events known as Pit Stop parties; some parties are sponsored by Formula One team such as the Renault F1 concert and the Toyota Rev party. A number of other cultural events and exhibitions are also scheduled during this time for visiting tourists. Sepang Circuit- 47 Confirmed For 2008 Merdeka Millennium Endurance Race

With the race exactly a month away, the 2008 Merdeka Millennium Endurance race (MME) has already secured a total of 47 entries and race promoters, Sepang International Circuit (SIC) is confident of a registration of more than 100 entries this year.

“Again, the response from the motor racing fraternity for this race is very encouraging. We had 103 cars and 309 drivers registering last year and I am confident that the numbers would be about the same; if not more. The MME has clearly progressed to become Asia’s Biggest Race as it had aspired when we first mooted the idea of organising the 12-hour endurance race in 2000,” said SIC General Manager Datuk Azmi Murad, who is the event director of the 2008 Merdeka Millennium Endurance Race.

According to Azmi, the 2008 event had generated a lot of interest from the international teams and he attributed the interest from the new regulations introduced this year to allow up to 20 cars from the open class for fully modified cars and 20 more from Class A (for cars above 1900cc) to qualify for the race.

“We’ll definitely see more supercars this time round. I am pleased to say that we have very good response from the international teams,” said Azmi, adding that the new regulations to reduce the lesser powered cars was aimed at enhancing safety for the competitors and to provide more enjoyment for the fans.

Divided in four classes and with three drivers to a car, the two remaining classes competing in the MME are Class B for cars with engines between 1601cc and 1900cc and Class C for cars below 1600cc, which used to have 26 cars for each class on the starting grid. This year, Class B will have a maximum of 19 cars and only 18 cars for Class C.

Entering its ninth edition this year, the MME only allows a maximum of 77 starters on the grid as provided by the circuit license issued by the International Federation of Automobile (FIA), the world’s motorsports governing body.

While qualifying would be held on August 29, the race would be flagged off at 11.45am on the following day on Saturday, 30 August and ending 12 hours later at 11.45pm. This year’s event would also feature three support races – the Asia Supercars Challenge, the Hong Kong Classic Cars Series and the single-seater junior formula Petronas Formula Xperience.

Last year, the MME race was won by the Hong Leong Kencana Racing Team with drivers Swedish Sven Herberger, Lars Erik Nielsen of Denmark and Malaysian Mokhzani Mahathir, which competes in the open class in a Porsche GT3 Cup RSR. Class A was won by Honda Malaysia Racing Team that featured two Super GT drivers Hiroko Katoh and Shinya Hosokawa and Malaysian Eddie Lew in a two-liter Honda Civic Type R race car.

Class B was won by an all Malaysian team of Boy Wong Yew Choong, Tek Kean Kang and Soh Kee Koon from Type R Racing Team in a Honda Integra while JC Racing topped the battle of 1600cc Class C with drivers Harry Chai, Tam Wei Han and Frank Yee of Hong Kong; driving a Honda Civic.

“We were treated to a superb race last year. This year should be even more exciting. I am made to understand that we would be seeing more top international teams and international drivers this year,” said Azmi at a special ceremony to announce the official partners for 2008 Merdeka Millennium Endurance Race.

While RTM will be the Host Broadcaster and Silverstone is the Official Tyre for Class B and C, Cartrade – ABT would be providing the official cars for the event.

At the event, Hong Leong Kencana Racing Team handed over the MME Challenge Trophy to Azmi; symbolizing that start of a one-month countdown of the event. Tek Kean Kang of Type R Racing Team handed over the Silverstone Challenge Trophy for Class B and C.

The Real Face of the Beijing Olympics

The anticipation of the Beijing Olympics was palpable - and the spectacular opening ceremonies, at the impressive Bird's Nest, proved it was well worth the wait. Yet the ideals of the summer games are also well represented behind the scenes:

1. Lopez Lomong was elected by his teammates to be the United States flag bearer. One of the Lost Boys of Sudan rescued from a Kenyan refugee camp by a United Nations program, he qualified for the U.S. team in the 1,500 meter race. What a story - personified in the host country, China, which has been strongly criticized for its record on human rights. One of the key concerns has been the war torn Darfur region of Lomong's home, Sudan. Lomong joined Team Darfur, a group formed to raise awareness of perceived abuses. As an ambassador of the U.S. and an athlete from Sudan, he's showing his character as well as sending a message: "I am worried about the kids who are dying in Darfur, kids who don't have the dream they could be good athletes or Olympians or doctors, because they will be running away from their villages separated from their families." Lomong's greatest hope is to inspire young kids around the world.

2. It has been three months since the 7.8 earthquake that devastated the Sichuan province of China, killing 70,000 people, injuring 375,000 and leaving more than 5 million homeless. Over 7,000 classrooms were destroyed and close to 10,000 children died in the tragedy. With the one child rule in China, there was an outpouring of grief as many families lost their only child. In the opening ceremony 9-year old Lin Hao, a student in a primary school at the epicenter, accompanied flag bearer Yao Ming - and represented hope for the Chinese people. After surviving the earthquake and getting out of his classroom, Lin Hao went back to pull two classmates to safety. During his rescue efforts he was hit by falling rubble and suffered a head injury. While waiting for help he encouraged his classmates to sing, keeping their spirits up. When asked why he risked his life, he said that he was the hall monitor and it was his job to look after his classmates. Although Lin Hao is not an Olympian - at least not yet - his heroism makes a grieving country proud and, while still mourning, allows all of China to enjoy the celebration.

3. The power of emotional support is exemplified by the families at the Olympics, watching their emerging adult children spread their wings as they compete. With world records and more gold medals than any other Olympian in history under his belt, everyone is talking about Michael Phelps. His mother and sisters have described the emotional roller coaster ride - the ups and downs, the pressure, the racing hearts, and then the ultimate excitement. His mother sees the aquatic center as Michael's office and knows that he's working to perform at his highest level. Just after his most dramatic win, Phelps said: "I don't know what to feel right now. It's so emotional. All I want to do is go see my mom." The Phelps family epitomizes the good in families, as well as their dreams and heroes.

4. Elisabeth McCutcheon, married to the U.S. men's volleyball coach, Hugh McCutcheon, was a member of the women's volleyball team in Athens, Her parents, Todd and Barbara Bachman, were great supporters of the sport. The first day of the games, Todd died of a stabbing and Barbara was seriously injured by an attacker who committed suicide by jumping from the ancient Drum Tower. Hugh's first thought, when hearing the news of his in-laws, was how to get to his wife. As a coach, as well as a son-in-law, there was no question about what to do in the face of such a tragedy. His response was what others expected of him: "Volleyball is my job, my family is my life." He left to support and comfort his wife. McCutcheon phoned his team before the first game, providing leadership from a distance. The volleyball community that loved the Bachman family rallied. The men took the floor for that first match with the victims' initials written on the backs of their shoes and said a silent prayer in memory of Todd Bachman. In a match that was much tougher than it should have been, the U.S. men's volleyball team won what turned out to be a bitter-sweet victory.

5. The first time ever, two U.S. women won gold and silver medals in the all-around individual gymnastics competition. For Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson - teammates, competitors and friends - it's been a long journey to a dream that has finally come true. The pair anchored the U.S. team that took silver behind China's gold earlier in the week. Liukin said she was not disappointed, but she and Johnson wanted more. They made a calendar, counting the days until they got their next chance for gold. They wanted to go all out and have fun. And the two pals managed to do both. Wow! Did you see the opening ceremony of the Olympics? Did you notice the German athletes as they entered the arena? Of course you did! They all carried a hand fan designed with the colors and design of their country's flag. It was a beautiful sight and so easily displayed. Someone somewhere had a good idea. The Germans had plenty of smiles and salutes for the crowds. But they had the edge on so many other countries just because they held their country's colors well above the others.

You can make your activities as colorful and clever too!

High schools, middle schools, and elementary schools all have school mascots drawn with bright, vivid colors. They have school assignment books, folders, newsletters and banners boldly decorated with their mascot. Beijing Olympics Women's Football - Can USA Finally Win It?

Women's football has progressed in leaps and bounds, and there can be no further proof of that than in the Beijing Olympics. There will be a total of 12 international teams taking part in this edition of the football tournament, and gone are the days when women's football will see huge scorelines in the favor of the more established nations. There is now a close resemblance to the men's game in results, as well as the tactical and technical abilities of the women footballers.

The 2008 edition of the women's Olympic football tournament has a number of excellent teams taking part. The usual suspects of Germany, Brazil, Norway and Asian champions North Korea will all be in the mix and shooting for a medal finish. There is also the very popular USA women's football team, who are in a unique position. They are actually on a better standing in the sport compared to their male counterparts, and have won both the Women's World Cup many times, as well as countless international tournament. It is with this pedigree that expectations are often high of the USA women's football team. But the talent pool is also large, with the sport enjoying immense popularity on various levels from the grassroots up.

The questions are therefore unavoidable. Will the USA women's football team win the gold medal at the Beijing Olympics? They certainly have the players to achieve that, although some key players have suffered unfortunate injuries before the start of the tournament. But with other quality players like Hope Solo still available for selection and fit to play, the strength in depth of the USA team is there for all to see. They have also often competed against their strong rivals like Germany and Brazil, and come out on top at the end of it all.

Perhaps the only point that the USA team might need to take note of that might jeopardize their medal hopes, would be their need to avoid complacency within their ranks. They have been grouped in a relatively easy pool of teams in the initial stage, with the likes of Norway, Japan and New Zealand making up the rest of the competition. On paper, the USA women's football team should overcome these teams easily. Yet, with the leveling up of many teams over the years, the USA will have to be at their best to avoid upset results against their group rivals.

As long as the USA women's soccer team can get off to a good start in the tournament, they should have little trouble qualifying from the group stage. The tough competition will come in the knockout stages, where they might have to face difficult teams like Germany and Brazil. With those matches enjoying a nature not unlike Russian Roulette, it will be the luck of the draw for most teams. But if they are able to safely negotiate the group stage, their medal hopes will be increased dramatically, and the USA women's soccer team will have as good a chance to win the gold medal as Germany and Brazil would have.

Thanks to Abhinav Bhindra, who won a gold medal on individual basis in Beijing Olympics, 2008, ending a long drought of 28 years without a gold medal in Olympics for India.

Abhinav Bhindra, a Chandigarh based business man, aged 25, made history by winning the individual gold medal in the 10 m air rifle event, beating his nearest rivals, the Chinese defending champion and a man from Finland, both of whom won the silver and bronze medals respectively. Though Abhinav Bhindra was only in the fourth position until his last round, managed to score near 10.8 points and thereby winning the gold medal, edging his nearest rival, the Chinese defending champion who managed to score only 10.5 in the last round.

Abhinav Bhindra, the son of a Punjab business man was a shy person by nature but he developed a passion for air rifle shooting when he was thirteen. It was yet another shooter from Punjab who motivated him and his competitive interest in air rifle shooting. Abhinav Bhindra used to practice hard for over 7 hours in a day and despite of being rich he was so humble and unassuming. Prior to Olympics Abhinav Bhindra had a special training session in Germany. Each bullet that he used for his practice had cost him Rs 15/-

Abhinav Bhindra after winning world championships a few months ago and now the Olympic gold medal in Beijing felt rather empty after striking gold, because he felt as if he reached the acme and nothing remained to be conquered. According to Abhinav Bhindra 'It was really challenging, to be without any real challenger.' To such an extent he was more competitive.

Though Abhinav Bhindra's achievement in winning a gold medal is hailed as one in a billion, his gold medal will not spur any marked improvement in air rifle shooting in India, since it is not a popular sport just like cricket or hockey. But Abhinav Bhindras' achievement has so far fetched him Rs 1.32 crores, the Punjab Government contributing the bulk amount of Rs One crore. Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav has already announced Abhinav Bhindra as the grand ambassador of Indian Railways.

The ad world in India is not impressed by Abhinav Bhindras' achievement since it is not from a popular sport like cricket, besides Abhinav Bhindras' shy nature. But still some others believe that Abhinav Bhindra has a photogenic face and his achievement is par excellent.Still he can make his own impression by virtue of his monumental achievement, by making planned and sustained efforts in that direction.

But one thing is certain. Abhinav Bhindras' achievement in Beijing Olympics, 2008, will add a fillip to Indias' Olympic contingent and motivate them to scale new heights in their own arena of sports.
