Why? I think we all know why. The more time you spend with a person, at a place, eating the same dish; the less you see it for what it is. I believe it is a time for a perspective change.

The following shots were all captured in RAW. No noise reduction has been applied. Autofocus was enabled with shutter speed, ISO and aperture at my control. No exposure compensation was applied (I don’t know how to use exposure comp!). Post processing involved vscoFILM (Kodak Portra 160) and sharpening via Alien Skin Exposure 4. I changed predominantly the WB, shadows, highlights, exposure and blacks within LR4.4.

The Fuji x100s handles high ISO very well. The lowest ISO I used was ISO1600. Most were ISO2500/3200. There are a few that are pushing what I’d consider as my comfortable zone at ISO4000 and ISO6400. The interesting thing I am noticing is that I am not seeing a degradation of detail as a result of noise, rather, I see a lot of dots. Perhaps it is something else in my editing? Over sharpening? I don’t know. But for all intended purposes, I think you can safely and worry-free shoot in the dark, at high ISO’s with the Fuji x100s.

The true test of detail and high ISO in close to darkness is with a human subject. I may get around to that test one day.

Day time photographs, in plenty of available light, is no test of a camera. The real assessment comes when conditions are not optimal. Evening time is usually one of the best gauges of a camera. When there is inadequate light, autofocus starts to decline. When there is inadequate light, details and digital noise deteriorate the image. When a camera has no manual controls, don’t even bother when there is inadequate light.

There is a level of crispy detail in the resultant images taken by the Fuji x100s. It catches me by surprise every time I review the photographs. I don’t know why but I continue to be in a state of disbelief when I see how well the camera performs. In the following examples, I barely pushed the ISO to beyond 4000. Most were between ISO2000-2500. I should not that I have not applied any form of noise reduction to these in post production (and NR is set to standard low in-camera).

One of the reasons why I purchased the Fuji x100s was to chronicle my student life at UTS. Whilst I found Instagram on my iPhone to be handy, I was found wanting. Being used to a level of quality and control with my DSLR from my professional work, the iPhone left me hanging. I couldn’t achieve what I wanted. Neither did I want to bring my work cameras with me to school for obvious reasons. Somehow, I managed to convince myself to buy a new gadget (I didn’t need much convincing, I just needed to qualify the expenditure). I am very glad I did.

As I went through the above images in Lightroom, I felt an urge to convert the majority of them to black and white. I think human beings are naturally drawn to black and white images. There is a sense of nostalgia and power-unknown within a black and white image. When photographing at night, there are a mixture of lights; some are blue, some are green, some are just horrible and indescribable. Black and white solves this white balance issue. But isn’t that just a bit too easy? Isn’t that over-simplying the real world in the name of convenience? Are we simply reasoning with ourselves that black and white images are ‘more powerful’ and use that as an excuse?

I admit, photographing in colour at night is difficult. The images are messy; things look gritty. There is something unglamorous, bordering on fugly with the images. There are hues of green, hues of orange, and hues of poo everywhere. But that’s life isn’t it?

And to be perfectly honest, that sums up Central, Sydney in a nutshell. Hues of green, hues of orange, and whiffs of piss and poo … everywhere.

I shall leave you on such an appetising note.

I am beginning to warm up to this little camera. I shared the following revelation on my instagram feed earlier today:

“In a few months time, three years will have had passed since I took up photography as an income generating profession. In these three years, I have traveled and experienced things that I would not have if I had continued by corporate-ladder-climbing career. In these three years, photography has been a tool and a means of escape. But in the same vein, my photography was lost. True, I learnt and excelled at wedding photography; my successful and growing business is testament to this. But the enjoyment and passion of photography itself slowly faded with each wedding. The Fuji x100s has given me the opportunity to find, define, and invigorate my passion and ability to form creativity and translate that into physical form. One could of course argue that an iPhone would suffice (or any other camera device); and such an argument is a valid one. But I do not know how to use my iPhone to achieve what I want visually. Because I am so used to DSLRs, I can only form exposures through manual controls. Thus, the x100s became the catalyst and means for engaging something that has long been lying dormant.”

To clarify the above quote, I should note that my photography ‘spirit’ per se, did not fade. Rather, the novelty of the act, the thinking, and subsequently the execution of photography was replaced by the same processes of acting, thinking and execution; but relegated to the confines of the narrow scope of wedding photography. To simplify: the joy and newness of photography was pushed aside to make way for documenting brides and grooms. The time allowed for creativity was replaced by an invisible need to capture details. The excitement remained but the sensation and rationale behind the emotion became different. One could argue that the art was still present in my wedding and portraiture work; but it was tucked deep within.

To illustrate my point, I used to make an effort for personal photographs. Jack and I would venture to coasts unknown at crazy hours of the night; whether it be sunrise or star trails – we did it. When was the last time I did such a thing? I can’t remember …

The x100s represents a new hope. I hope to shoot more personal work; even if it is snapshots of my daily life as I work towards this wretched MBA. I want to embrace the unknown of highlights and shadows. I want to become friends with apertures smaller than f/2.5. I want to explore what photography means to me. I want to get out of autopilot mode. And the x100s will be the tool for the job.

In Trenske’s article titled, ‘The case against good enough’, published here - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/kathleen-trenske/the-case-against-good-enough_b_2967170.html, we are once again affronted by the same chorus.

“Disc of images are bad mmmkay? Peoples! Print your wedding photos or you will regret it.”

Okay, that was perhaps an over-generalisation and an over-the-top dramatic presentation of what Trenske so eloquently (and persuasively) writes. But let me ask you, why has the professional wedding photography community been so adamant with pushing this message across?

As I read Trenske’s article, I found myself nodding in agreement to many things. In fact, it is hard to find anything inherently wrong with what is expressed. This is not a critique of the message but rather, taking a step back and seeing the bigger picture.

I’ve been a wedding photography for only 3 years. In this short tenure, I have observed different markets within the industry. I do note that in Australia, specifically in Sydney, it is more like a bubble than a representative sample of what the wedding photography market is like on a global scale. Nevertheless, there are different segments of paying customers. There are those who want the whole shebang; the album, the thank-you cards, the parent albums, prints. You name it, they want it. Then there are those who are satisfied with a DVD (or USB) of images. Of course, there are those who typically fall in between of these two extremes.

I applaud Trenske for illustrating the power and value of wedding photographs. I pictured her flipping through her parents’ wedding album. I felt the emotions. I imagined 42 years of history, frozen in time, translated to physical memories. I got the point. But, will others? Specifically, will those who don’t see the value in having printed wedding photographs and a wedding album, even be convinced to read the entire article? I hazard not.

There within lies the problem. This is not an attack of Trenske. Her article is but one example of the same message, repeated by thousands of wedding photographers around the world. We have all, yes, all, made an assumption based on our own values. Because we take pride in our work, we naturally believe in the intrinsic and priceless value of printed photographs. But in doing so, we have imposed our own values upon others. Guess what wedding photographers? Most couples in real life, don’t share the same perspective. Most couples in real life, do actually go on with their daily lives after the wedding celebration. Most couples in real life, don’t have the experiences that we have. Given their contexts, should we really expect them to see our argument eye-to-eye?

In our lives, weddings become our lives. We may have a life outside weddings, but we spend most of our waking hours, engaged in something that is related to weddings. Everyday issues of everyday people seem like an alien concept. Sure, we have to pay a mortgage, make babies, and have fights with our partners too. But, we live in our own bubble of happy wedding photography of lavish details, beautiful sun-drenched locations, and the perception of happily-ever-after. We become skewed by what we do. In a way, we lose touch with the very people we work for.

Published a mere 2 days ago, Trenske’s article has been ‘liked’ by 3,447 people. Countless others have read the message. It is a mind-boggling number. I stumbled upon this article because my colleagues shared it on their facebook feed. Its popularity among the industry is what makes it so dangerous. In our (well-founded) attempt to educate our customer base, we have inadvertently pushed them away by brushing away their ‘real life’ concerns with intangible airy fairy ideology.

To the bride that doesn’t want to cut corners on her centrepiece; to the groom who doesn’t want to lose out on the 20 minutes he has with his Shelby GT500 KR; to the couples who can’t see the difference between your prolab prints to their local ‘Walmart’ equivalent: what then do we, as a community, say to them?

A very common argument provided by my colleagues is that wedding photographs are the one tangible thing that remains after the wedding. You know the argument. It might as well be an advertisement for MasterCard. Trenske does well in rephrasing the argument, “But of all the things you spend money on for your wedding, your wedding photographs are the ONLY thing that will increase in value over time”. Very cleverly, Trenske bypasses the critique that marriage is perhaps the most tangible thing that remains after the wedding.

In our haste to give more value to our clients, we have caused more division between the haves and the have-nots. In our desire to provide future generations tangible frameworks of memories, we have ostracised those who cannot afford it. In our passion, we have become blinded by our own perceptions of reality.

So what if couples print their photographs on cheap photographic paper and cheap ink? Do they not value the image as much as we do? Does the medium really matter in this context? Are we not presenting a mixed message here? We tell them to print their photos. Then we tell them that the prints they got from their hypermarket store is not worth the paper it is printed on. What kind of confusing logic is that?

So what if couples choose to produce their own wedding album? Does it matter if they use Blurb or Snapfish? I heart my Queensberry and Vision Art albums. But if my couples choose to make their own album, how have they wronged? Whom have they wronged? Themselves? Their offsprings!!?! Are they not placing value on their memories as per our advocacy? Does it matter if the quality of their product is inferior? Does it?

So what if couples do not order prints from their wedding? Have we not been paid handsomely for our time and efforts? Why do wedding photographers feel entitled to prescribe?

The nature of human beings is that we have all developed our own perspectives through our unique experiences. Even if two people were to experience the exact chain of events, they may have very different interpretations. Therefore, as wedding photographers, we need to acknowledge that our point of views do not have to align with our paying customers. When we are engaged for our services, our responsibility is to do our very best. What happens after, does not fall under our purview.

What is ‘good enough’? Similarly, what then, is not good enough?

Can we really believe that couples who don’t hire a professional wedding photographer, do not value their marriage as much as couples who do? Would you be daring enough to tell this to their face? Exactly. Similarly, would you have the audacity to tell a potential paying client, that they should cut back on their guest list so that they may afford you? Then why should we continue basing our argument on this epically flawed logic?

I don’t really have a solution. There certainly are no easy solutions. At the same time, I don’t think there is a problem. Marrying couples certainly don’t think there is a problem. If DVD/USB technology becomes obsolete, I am sure that there will be a service available to convert the data into whatever medium is current in the future. It may be costly (think about all those VHS to DVD conversions), but it will exist. As much as I prefer physical prints, they’re not a definitive solution. They may get lost, damaged, stolen, burnt, eaten …

As businesses, we will attract certain qualities and values – hopefully these are the same qualities and values that you have. As businesses, we can control who our clientele are. But that is the extent of our control. That should be the extent of our control.

My hope is that you will come away feeling provoked. I want you to experience a reaction to what I have written. There is no sitting-on-the-fence on this one. You either agree or vehemently disagree. I then want you to think about why you have reacted in the way that you have. My guess is that your reaction is based on your own experiences which in turn, have led to develop your own set of values. I want to know why. As a visual storyteller of weddings, there is no greater satisfaction when observing the interactions of family members, both immediate and extended. It is easy to become lost in the many beautiful details. It is all too easy to become distracted by the amazing surroundings. And when it comes to wedding photographs, these details serve as emotional triggers. Triggers that enable all those who were present, to draw from their own experiences. As you will see, there is a bond that is thicker than blood, more attractive than the most gorgeous bouquet, and bolder than the most intricate of wedding gowns. There is a shared joy that transcends the wedding day itself. There is a common understanding of celebration and being behind the camera, there is very little not to like about the experience.

The funny thing is that Chris and I go way back. My first thing that comes to mind about this kind young man is LEGO, ninja turtles, and a stuffed killer whale soft toy called Darlwin. You see, Chris and I met in primary school and we somehow ended up in the same secondary school. And to be able to see him marry the love of his life, made all that history so much more powerful.

It was a wedding towards the smaller scale but the celebration was by no means small. What I truly liked about this particular day was the little tea ceremony that took place straight after the wedding ceremony. Sometimes, it is the little details that make the day so special.

I waited at Circular Quay, hoping to catch a glimpse of the couple. I only had a camera phone photo of them sent via whatsapp. All I knew was that Kimberly was in a black dress and Ivan in a checkered shirt.

Through a series of emails, Ivan told me of his bold plans to propose to his partner in Sydney whilst they were here for holidays. He wanted to keep things simple without too much drama and fanfare. He ordered a bouquet and delivered them to my door on the morning of the proposal. And through many texts, we had a plan.

Kimberly walked unsuspectingly past me. They stopped numerous times to look at Sydney’s beautiful harbour. Sometimes I would be behind time, at others, I would run in front – all in the hope that I would not be discovered. Even I was nervous for Ivan.

I never did find out what video Ivan showed Kimberly prior to the proposal. But I do know one thing, she said YES!

We became close friends. We were both entrepreneurs. He in acoustics engineering. I as a photographer. We bonded over the similarities and struggles in managing a startup. After his proposal to Teresa at Centennial Park, our friendship continued. Together we traveled to Southern Highlands for their Love Story and once more to Bali for their prewedding.

From the very beginning, Tara was determined to have me as her wedding photographer. She tells me that she threatened JP his life should they fail to book me for their wedding.
