The wind is chilly and the days are getting shorter! Time for 2017 outdoor Fall portrait sessions. Bring on the leaves and boots. I always get asked “what should we wear?”.  I know it seems daunting to coordinate outfits for your entire family. However, you don’t need to stress.   Take a look at some of our Fall wardrobe tips and ideas below. You can use these to think about how to style your own family.

Top Tips for What to Wear for Outdoor Fall Sessions: 

1. Start with one outfit that you really like. Maybe Mom has a killer pair of boots and dress she wants to wear.  Go with it! From there, build around it so colors coordinate but don’t match exactly.
2. Add a pop of color. Some of our favorite accent colors for the Fall are navy blue, eggplant purple, olive, red and yellow. Pair the color with neutrals to tie it all together.
3. Stay away from wearing a lot of green when having photos taken in grassy or wooded areas. Avoid fluorescent colors or logos on clothing that will age a portrait.
4. Layer! Layers add dimension and depth. Don’t be afraid of texture or mixing patterns. If it’s chilly, bring a sweater. Or maybe layer on a necklace overtop a dress.
5. Be careful wearing white. If you have fair skin or blonde hair, white tends to wash out skin tones. White is fine as an accent color.
6. Dress your kids in clothes that fit perfectly, not with room to grow.
7. Add accessories. A hat, vest, or suspenders for boys are adorable. If your girl likes to dress up, find a headband, bow or hat that she might not normally wear so a few pictures are extra special.  Mom can have fun with accessories too!
8. Don’t forget about nice shoes for everyone.

Remember, have fun with it! You want your family’s personality to shine through.

I do not consider myself someone who can paint or draw (stick figures are my go-to!). But painting is something I have been wanting to try as a different creative outlet.  With a little encouragement, tips, and inspiration from fellow photographer friends, I gave this a shot. I stepped outside of my comfort zone and took a risk knowing it could end up a complete disaster. I’m pretty happy with the results, even if it’s not perfect, definitely not straight, a lot of paint was wasted, and my 20 month old daughter was not a very cooperative model!  Maybe I’ll even paint another one

This backdrop will be available to use with all future sessions at the studio and will definitely be making an appearance again during Cherry Blossom season next Spring!

Bring me all the babies to snuggle!! But I also love the behind the scenes work when I sit at my computer and get to bring my creative vision to life.  Some babies have perfect porcelain skin and some do not.  The hormones, labor process, and overall sensitivity to a new environment make every baby’s skin react differently. Either way is ok and it eventually goes away!  My goal is to create a final image so that your baby looks just as you see them.  I try very hard not to over edit natural skin tones, birth marks, and any areas that would take away from the natural beauty of your baby.

We also take the utmost care with your baby during their newborn session when it comes to safety.  A baby that is one or two weeks old does not have the strength to hold up their own head. Sarah assists at newborn sessions to help with safety and posing so you can relax and enjoy your time at the studio. Editing out a spotter’s hand is part of the work that goes into turing your images into artwork and beautiful memories to look back on and enjoy.

Much love and attention to detail goes into your newborn session with me, from first inquiry through final delivery.

This adorable guy had some pretty bad baby acne when I saw him. Funny thing is, when he came back two weeks later to view his images, his skin was perfect! And this is how I want his parents to remember him

Typically I skip the hot and humid Maryland Summer months and wait for Fall to offer outdoor family sessions again. Fall is an ideal time if you are considering having your family photographed or want ‘wow’ images for your home or holiday cards. These Fall sessions are very popular and usually book up quickly. Using my camera, I make sure to capture beautiful images of the special times in your life. But beyond that, it is my goal for each family that I photograph to truly love their portraits and take home a piece of art to display and enjoy daily. As I busy mom of little children I can relate to the ‘craziness and chaos’ of life.  Time is limited and those images you said you would get around to printing are still waiting, years later. That is why I make it a priority to work with each client to deliver a finished product for you and your children to enjoy right away. And if you order a gallery of frames, we will even hang it for you!

My personal favorite photographs of my children are the ones that I have printed and get to look at every day. Nothing beats actually holding, touching and looking at a printed image.

Want to see what I’m talking about?  Here are some behind the scenes images of a recent gallery wall that we created and installed for a client. We did the portrait taking and design but left the artwork hanging to the expert Meredith Forte, of Frame Avenue Design, for a smooth and easy installation.

This gallery wall of images is framed in a white natural barn wood. Their family of four is proudly displayed on the stairway, bringing memories and joy each and every time it is walked by.

We kept her session very neutral in colors of whites and grays. Neutral colors ensure that your images will be timeless and blend seamlessly into any room you choose to display them in.

My favorite part about this session is that we were able to capture a variety of images, from sibling to family, sleeping to awake, and even a cute newborn yawn.  Newborn sessions are so amazing to hold onto because they grow up so fast.  They will have these images displayed in their home for years to come and enjoy walking by them and smiling at them everyday.

Scroll to the end to see a cell phone image of their stunning 20×30 bloom frame.  I had to hang it on the studio wall to take photo of it before they picked it up!
