First off, you should know that this is all written in 5.1 surround sound, to be played by your local amazing planetarium, or even your kick-ass home stereo system. So in order to present it to you here in squished mp3 stereo, I’ve had to mush down SIX sound canvases into TWO. This is all an elaborate way of saying that this is a pretty rough cut.

The next thing you should know is that there are going to be the most amazing fractal zooms created for this album. So this will be an album that you watch, or a fractal show that you listen to. I’m really trying to raise the bar on the stuff I’ve been doing for planetariums.

Anyway, this song, called “The Overachiever Suite”, opens the whole album. Enjoy!

Anyway, for awhile now I’ve been giving these CDs out to people who are interested. Then I started giving them out online, because that seemed kind of cooler. And I started reaching people in interesting places, like Latvia. I’ve never been to Latvia, and have no idea why people there are getting into my music, but I would love to go there someday!

Melancholy and mourning – this is another song from upcoming album. This one actually had radio play in a simpler acoustic form which, c’mon, is pretty cool.

Basic guitar and voice was recorded at my friend Lex’s studio. I added the bass and solos at 4 am one morning – sometimes it just pulls me out of bed – and Amazing Mike (see last post) laid down the drumming at my house. We’re just about to tear down and move to a new house, which means that this drumming is among the last things to be recorded here. Baking in another level of resigned sadness. Just the way things are sometimes.

I’m almost done with a new album, and I’m noticing a couple of interesting things about this whole artistic creation process thing. For one, it’s nice to see that with I’m getting better with each project. I feel like each one is a little braver, a little tighter, a little better than the one before. Another benefit is that I’m getting faster. Someday I may even have something like a regular blog update.

This latest project is less of a historical concept album (see Quarter Life Crisis) and more of a simple collection of stories.

The base track – acoustic guitar and vocals – were recorded at the utterly amazing Livingstone Studios in London, by the equally amazing and very entertaining Kevin Feazey. Seriously, I got to record in London. It was pretty much the highlight of my year.

Next, the drums were put down by my new friend Mike, who plays here in the Bay with Planet Booty. Now, I have not (yet) seen Planet Booty play in person, but judging solely from how nimble Mike was in laying down drums over an existing rough guitar track, I’d say that his live shows are bloody incredible!

Finally, I laid down the bass and other guitars on top of his drums, and Nastja stayed up until nearly 3 in the morning recording the backup vocals – no small feat when you have two small kids in the house!

Cheery stuff to open the album.

This one is mostly done but needs a couple subtle changes before it’s ready for the album.

War.
The pause between breaths, the space between shots, the land between front lines. The quiet between fighting. The gap between your life and your death.
The exceedingly profound and simple beauty of ordinary things, when they’re the last things you may see.

This is the midpoint of the album. I wrote it about the second World War, but it of course applies to any conflict, even those between lovers.

Working.
Slavery.
The quiet rebellion of your spirit as you sit in traffic or on a stopped train, on your way to a job you hate.
The entire bloody system of enforced servitude for less while the rich get ever richer.
The murder of the planet corresponding to the murder of your soul.
This song is a scream against all of it.

This one is still pretty raw and I’ll change the percussion a bit for the final version. But this is the general idea.

Bieber Tower of Hair Defense

Karmic disclaimer: I don’t really like making fun of anyone, even if they very richly deserve it. However, this was a paid job and I gotta feed my kids. Also, I think that even if young master Bieber ever saw this game and happened to be hurt by it, he could somehow manage to comfort himself with his fleet of lamborghinis.
