Lane Bryant – Fashion Style Off

Full Figured Fashion Week is just around the corner and I can’t even begin to tell you how jam packed the schedule is despite extra days being added this year. Lane Bryant is hosting an event just for bloggers and stylists during the festivities and I was lucky enough to be chosen to attend. One of the perks was that each attendee received a $200 USD gift card to use in store or a code to use online… and boy did I make that money work!

The idea was that each attendee used the gift to purchase items they loved to create an entire outfit that reflected their own unique style using only Lane Bryant pieces. I’ll be honest, it took more than a week for me to decide. Wearing one brand head to toe, a brand I’d never tried before and unsure of sizing was definitely a challenge!

I was half expecting that the dress wouldn’t fit and I’d be in an awkward position, naked in the park wearing nothing more than heels and bling but thankfully I’m open to trying new things and my online shopping gamble paid off as everything was perfect. The dress was made of thinner fabric than I was expecting but perfect for summer and draped beautifully. It also came in black and even though I’ve never really worn green before the colour just sung out to me.

The shoes, oh my goodness the shoes! You should have seen my face as I tentatively open the box and gently removed all the protective wrapping. As I slid them on I got an instant rush of relief, they fit perfectly!!! I cannot begin to stress enough how torturous I find shoe shopping so to find an affordable online store with shoes that fit is a dream. Honestly it’s like they were made for me. I’ve needed a comfortable nude heel for so long and I’m glad the hunt is over. The only problem I have now is deciding whether or not to buy them in black too.

To finish the look I chose pretty gold earrings which I highlighted by wearing my hair gently to the side and I chose a sweet crazy frog ring as a conversational piece. I also added a pale gold belt for a subtle glimmer, to break up all the green and to define my waist.

Lullaby

“T’was a sweet song that filled the night, her hand pressing softly against my back as I was lulled to sleep. Her warmth surrounds me as fear slips away and the night is yet again claimed for silent slumber.” – Aidan, 3.5 years old

At least thats how I hope Aidan feels about me at 1am (and 2am… 3am… 4am… 5am) when I’m crouched by his bedside, cold and shivering, stroking his temple in a rhythmic pattern willing him to sleep so I can get some of my own. I don’t know where he gets it from but it’s the only thing that works.

Sleep is rarely an issue at our house as far as Aidan and Steve are concerned. Usually the two of them pass out by 8 o’clock and I’m left to spend the rest of my night working or cleaning. To be honest I prefer it that way, the silent darkness soothes the constant nattering that fills my brain by day.

For as long as I can remember I’ve been a night owl, silent in the night, solitude my only company. I’d sing songs, look at pretty pictures in magazines and write. The earliest I can remember doing this was when I was 10. Lights would have to be out by 7 o’clock and suddenly my creative life would come alive by torchlight.

As an adult it’s no different except there are now baby hedgehogs and turtles and silly puppies on YouTube to delight and distract me. There is also currently a sweet child of mine, coughing, snotting and tossing his way into my mind space. “Winter is coming!” the towns people said and I was glad for his vaporiser and for my thick socks.

He cries out and I am there. My poor little poppet to weak to fend for himself. The doona at his feet too far for him to reach. The water by his bedside not cold enough to drink. All a classic case of the “I’m-sick-I-want-my-mumma-for-every-second-until-I’m-better-but-it’s-also-totally-reasonable-to-fight-her-every-step-of-the-way-itis” which leaves me catching a fever myself at times.

I thought Man-Flu was bad, Baby-Man-Flu is so much worse.

Now can someone please stroke my temple until I fall asleep the way my mother used to… Zzz

I don’t know about you but I window shop online more than I’d like to admit. I’m the kind of person who’ll gaze for hours, putting things in my cart only to leave them there abandoned. I never seem to suffer buyers remorse as I’ve usually agonised over the purchase for weeks. Sometimes a piece is exotic for plus and I know it will sell out straight away so I’ll buy it as an “investment”. Other times a piece will sing out to me as I scroll down the page and the clouds part and the heavens open and I just know beyond a shadow of a doubt that it’s meant to be in my wardrobe… this skirt and I had a little moment.

Sometimes I wonder if I own too many sparkly pieces but then I remember “light” is my thing and I shouldn’t be afraid to own it. The glitz and the glamour is my favourite way of dressing, I could kiss Baz for Gatsby! Oh hello, pale skin and dramatic lips are “in”. Fancy frocks covered in embellishments and vintage bling is “in”… winning! It doesn’t mean you have to be all light and girly like Daisy to be sparkly, you can always vamp up sequins. sigh… I can’t wait to see it at the movies, will you be going?

A Loss of Confidence

It can happen in a moment.

You’re sitting at your desk or standing in the shops and something happens, actions that occur in a small fragment of time that may not even be directed towards you, yet completely changes the way you view not only the world but yourself…. has this ever happened to you?

It doesn’t need to be an overly dramatic, traumatic, or even graphic moment to catch your attention. Sometimes it’s subtle and it creeps up on you, words slipping silently into your ear until it twists words and all meaning, begging you to question everything you thought you knew. Other times, even when you’re standing completely still, the ground feels adrift beneath your feet cracking, the earth ready to swallow you whole.

Then just for a second you forget to breathe.

I’m 27 and I like to think that I know who I am, what makes me a good person, what enrages me, what I believe in and what my strengths and weaknesses are. I like to think that through a lot of trial and error I have the knowledge within myself to be strong to stand up for my convictions with merit and will.

Most of the time I don’t.

I thought it was meant to get easier, with time and an open mind comes wisdom. The ability to assess my surroundings as well as my role and engagement with those around me leading me closer to a sense of enlightenment, an understanding of the ultimate question.

Why am I here?

I can’t remember when exactly but very early on I made a conscious decision to be a “giver” and I’ve played the role of a loyal sheep for over 25 years and like all good stories it started with my parents. I was a good girl, not an angel but I was good. I followed the rules for most of my childhood and the biggest punishment my parents would dish out was a grounding or the “I’m so disappointed in you.” speech which, as it would seem has had a longstanding effect on me.

“Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.”

That phrase has been imprinted on my brain for as long as I can recall and I still live by it. I get immense joy from giving, donating, solving problems, listening or just being there for someone. I tend to get emotionally invested, regardless of practicalities or reason. I follow my intuition. I’m a firm believer in Karma and I try my hardest everyday to make sure I insert positive actions into the world in the hopes that one day, when my soul is close to breaking it will, in some way be returned to me.

I tend to listen to my feelings, my emotional reactions often driving further actions. Usually I can recognise when I’ve gone too far, invested too much or the swell of negative feelings rises to the point where I can no longer ignore it. I pull back, I talk to Steve, I call my Mum and I try to remove myself from the situation often cutting people off for a short period of time.

Writing tends to help.

I haven’t felt safe to do so for awhile, months actually and I know you’ve noticed. This used to be my safe place for so many different reasons and I can’t quite decide whether no longer being able to write so freely was a change I needed or if it was just simply forced upon me. With my normal channel of release seemingly covered in venomous, often inconspicuous lines of distain often made my casual passers-by I began to retreat within myself and slowly self combust.

BOOM

Alarm bells rang in loud silence as I sat slumped, food mindlessly finding it’s way towards the hole in the pit of my stomach, a void begging to be filled. I lay in bed fighting the curtains for a few more hours of darkness for blissful sleep, my stomach turning from the late night forage. This wasn’t a new feeling. It wasn’t bad but it certainly wasn’t good, I liked to think I knew myself.

On Monday I’d try to do better and I did until Wednesday or maybe only until lunch. This happened every week. It wasn’t all “bad” foods but it was excess. We eat a healthy balanced diet, Steve’s even lost 17 kilos and we exercise. I’d been fighting myself for weeks because no matter how much I worked out, the food was just counteracting all my efforts.

It wasn’t until I hid three chocolate bars in the car after filling the tank at the service station late one Tuesday night so Steve wouldn’t see that I knew I could no longer help myself. Hiding food is serious “tell” for me that something deeper is going on. Suddenly I was a teenager again who hid bags of freddo frogs from my parents.

I made a doctors appointment.

I’d been depressed before but I’d never sought help, I used my blog for therapy and it worked, it’s why I’m so passionate about the industry. Casting aside the thought of business for a moment, writing is one of the many perfect tools for self expression and after almost seven years my beautiful, tormented and joyful canvas felt like it had been ripped from the frame. A part of me was enraged, another sad and the rest felt weak.

I’ve hardly cried since Aidan was born. Sure there have been tears of frustration, stress and hormones but I’m talking about the kind of cries that feel like your heart has escaped your chest, acid filling your lungs and your eyes swelled shut. The deep breathy heaves and the ache in your hands as your wringe your fingers until your knuckles are white and sweaty. Those tears left when he entered my life.

Or so I thought.

As I sat in the counsellors small room, cradling my bag in my lap I began to question whether or not I really needed to be there. Someone else may be feeling much worse with emotions less trivial than mine. It was selfish of me to take away someone’s possible last chance of help. Then I remembered the toxic cry and I knew I couldn’t live with that in my life anymore, not in front of Aidan, not for myself.

The words poured out of me like a song, the tale of my life and who’s a part of it. I touched on significant people past and present, my day to day feelings, what I do for a living and that I’d noticed dramatic emotional and physical changes in myself over a short period of time. That this was something I’d done before but not with this intensity. I was brutally honest, I didn’t flinch at a single word but tears silently flooded countless tissues without any fanfare or drama, hardly noticeable compared to the rate of my speech.

The hour was up and I was exhausted beyond comprehension. I honestly couldn’t remember the last time I was so mentally drained. I went home and slept deeply until it was time to collect Aidan from school. As I sat in the car waiting for the time to click over to 3pm I thought about that little hour in that little room and came to the conclusion that I was ok there.

In some ways it was just like my blog of old. A small space in the world in which I could bare my soul without malice, criticism or suggestive undertones sweeping back at me. What happened there stayed there and would never leave. Open engaged eyes always met my gaze, an unbiased view of who I am was never questioned. It is my temporary safe house equipped with tools, if which used properly, could help me build a safe house of my own.

I’m proactive about my involvement in sessions which still leave me drained and I’ve surprised myself by how much I’ve been willing to share. Details I’ve never told anyone, things I’d buried deep and deemed insignificant to protect myself. Dredging them up into the light, inspecting aspects of my life, the choices I’d made and what sort of knock on effect that’s had into my current situation.

If I’m making any of this process seem casual or easy I apologise. It’s the hardest but most liberating thing I’ve ever done purely for the sake of myself, in spite of myself. I’d like to be clear that by no means is any of this about weight or body confidence, excess food consumption is purely my tell for a deeper issue. I still totally rock at being me like no body else can and I own that in any shape that I may be but what I’m working through right now is bigger that my body.

What governs my choices and what type of confrontation leaves me faltered? What are my responses to those situations, my rationalisations and ultimately how I’d like to act in present and future scenarios. I’m not saying it’s for everyone but it’s working for me. Whilst I’m silently questioning every facet of my life up until the current day, trudging through torrents of often difficult emotions I can also say I’ve never felt more in tune with myself.

It’s difficult to live outside the box when you’re constantly being put back in it.

There will be changes afoot and that will have a ripple effect across everything that touches my life. I simply ask that you be patient, pause before you comment and be mindful of those around you. Even the most unsuspecting, confident and self assured people can be sensitive beings and allow it all to get lost in a moment.

Aussie Curves – Leather

This gorgeous skirt is the very first leather garment that’s graced my wardrobe and I’m not sure I could ever part with it. I’ve had it for about a year and when I wear it I feel expensive and edgy. Sometimes you need that, like when you’re going out to a new place with new people, the right clothing choice can give you a confidence boost. I firmly believe we dress to reflect the way we feel and sometimes if we get the combination just right we can dress a certain way and our emotions adapt to suit the look.

I knew I wanted to wear my new lace shirt with the skirt the instant I put the two together I got a True Blood kind of feeling and the theme song started playing in my head. So of course I needed a big southern quiff, long locks and blood red lips.

Like a Lady

I like being a lady who luches, especially on a Monday when I’m usually working. There’s something to be said about escaping from normality, getting dressed up and eating delicious food. It’s good for the soul. It’s even better when you do it with friends.

The lovely team at Appliances Online held a gorgeous brunch and also invited Claire, another Aussie Curve lover and I was really looking forward to catching up just the two of us. Living in the Hawkesbury can be quite isolating which is one of the reasons why I love attending events, I get to hang out with bloggie friends, meet new people and learn something new…

… like how to make a Chiffon Cake. I’d never heard of them before but now I know how to make one of the lightest, fluffiest cakes I’ve ever tasted. You need a special tin to make it and I’m seriously considering buying one.

We were taught a few different recipes by the Monday Morning Cooking Club and they reminded me why I loved cooking with their stories of family, heritage and community. I used to cook for joy before Aidan was born but then food just became food that needed to be put on a plate so we would all have the energy to get through the day. Now I kind of want to start my own little cooking club, who wants to come over?

My Mothers Day was spent mostly in bed trying to get over the flu and was pretty uneventful so I’m glad I took time out last week to treat myself in advance. I wore my gorgeous Adrianna Papell dress from Macy’s and my white heels from Payless USA. This dress never fails to make me happy when I wear it and I always seem to receive compliments when I do. For my hair I pinned back simple curls, wore some soft natural looking make up and my current favourite perfume “Dior Addict 2″.

Nespresso High Coffee

I’ve mentioned before that I’m not a coffee drinker but on the odd occasion where I’ve found myself in a cafe for a meeting and surprisingly a raspberry “Spider” isn’t a fitting beverage, I’ve dabbled with lattes and mochas. So when someone lovely from Nespresso (who also happens to be a direct link to George Clooney) invites you to an intimate High Coffee experience for Mother’s Day, you go.

As I live over an hour out of the city a fancy car was sent to pick me up, I think it suits me don’t you? My chauffeur’s name was Steve and he was absolutely charming. We exchanged stories about our line of work and he told me of his days driving the streets of New York which gave us plenty to talk about for the entire drive in. Did I mention I’m excited about my trip?

The High Coffee was set up in a stunning boardroom in the PR office with waitstaff, gorgeous flower arrangements and of course, a Nespresso Coffee Expert Barista… unfortunately no Clooney.

It didn’t take long for the others to arrive, each with their Mother or special lady in their life. Dana was my guest as sadly Monica wasn’t able to come. I love getting the opportunity to share the fun stuff I get to do with her since she has to put up with me venting about the rough stuff. Still, it was really nice to just chill out, relax and enjoy the moment with Dana.

After everyone was seated we got a little bit of an intro into the Nespresso range, the machines available and the different functionalities of each. It was at this point that I grabbed a notebook and pen because I really am a coffee novice and I was in for an education.

The table was beautifully laid and I happily consumed my fair share of sandwiches and citrus tarts. I’m also a bit of a sucker for pastel paper straws in tiny glass bottles… oh and roses, I love roses.

Taking the time to smell them was over, for it was time to test our palettes with salt, suger, lemon and dark chocolate. By placing each item on different areas on our tongues we could gauge reactions to saltiness, sweetness and bitterness which ultimately guided us to our preferred blends of coffee. Everyone’s result was different.

In total there are 16 Grands Crus, 3 of which are decaf. Limited edition blends are also released which are currently “Trieste” and “Napoli”.

We were taught about extractions and how the amount of time water is in contact with the beans, determines the sweetness or bitterness of the coffee. There are three different extractions: Ristretto (25ml), Espresso (40ml), Lungo (110ml). I did not know that, I thought it just came out.

After having tried a few distinctive blends and having a little chat to the expert Barista Sarah I placed an order for her suggested blend “Volutto” by way of a cappuccino. Whilst we waited Dana and I tucked into the delicious treats.

I mean, how could we not? Those are raspberry caramel tarts people, they tasted better than they looked so that’s saying something. Yes, those are pumpkin sandwiches that have since left me with a craving, not exactly something you can just whip up spur of the moment.

Ta-Da! It looked perfect and after a couple of sips I accidentally interrupted the conversation by blurting out “Oh I’m sorry but I just have to say that this is the first coffee I’ve ever liked, like ever!“… one of those moments where I was glad George wasn’t in the room because I sounded like Taylor Swift.

Deciding what to wear was incredibly easy. I’d bought this Art Deco Print Dress from ASOS Curve because the print reminded me of the Chrysler Building. Black pumps and a simple blow dry and I was done, no need for accessories. I also toted my 3 Annie’s silver Audrey Lu for added glam but forgot to grab it for the picture. I seriously take that bag everywhere, even when I don’t have a camera with me.

I had a very lovely Mother’s Day treat thanks to Nespresso and you could have one everyday thanks to their current cash back offer. Tomorrow morning, Dads across the country will be wandering aimlessly into stores and walking out with vibrating slippers, hand creams and chocolates. Don’t be Blue

One of the things I’ve loved about Aussie Curves is that every single week not only is my wardrobe challenged but I’m challenged on an emotional level too. I’m not saying that each week I’m experiencing an extreme personal growth breakthrough but it’s enabled me to notice patterns in my behaviour and attitude toward my clothing choices.

The best part is that it’s all documented. I can look back at pictures of the first time I wore a dress that came well above my knees and compare my body language to more recent photos when my knees are clearly on show and just from my posture and facial expression you can see it’s a hurdle I’ve jumped over. I got over it. I got over the perception of everyone else’s idea of what is flattering for me. The ever nagging “everyone” that resides in our subconscious that we feel the need to please to be normal… or maybe that’s just me.

I made a pact with myself that I would be daring, that I would be bold and I would also allow myself to just be. To flow where the inspiration takes me, shutting out all else. I’ve grown to understand what I like about the way certain cuts and lengths sit on my body, the fabrics that I prefer and how texture in an outfit is really important. It’s not always about trends but now I’m no longer afraid to dip my toe into them. It’s about fun and learning to be at ease with yourself.

LG Optimus G Giveaway

I was gifted an LG Optimus G Smartphone and given the option to give one away. I was not paid for this post and as usual all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Most of the time when I get invited to attend events I have an idea of how it will play out but sometimes I get surprised, this was one of them. LG had invited me to be a guest at an intimate product launch for their brand new phone the Optimus G in The Rocks.

It seemed like a perfect excuse to get all dressed up. I had gorgeous new frock to wear that deserved the city lights and there is something simply indulgent about heading out on a weekday. I even glossed up my digits with black lace nail decals from Glam by Manicare, don’t scrimp on the details I say!

I think it’s important, especially when meeting new people to look polished, confident and to stand out from the crowd… a pale gold foil dress will definitely do that. To jazz up my look even further I added one of my favourite statement necklaces, I felt amazing. I really need to take proper photos of it in daylight, it’s definitely going in my suitcase for New York.

The team from LG were lovely and really knew my blog, I can tell when people have done their research. They also knew about my love of selfies and that having a tool to help me share moments from my daily adventures was important to me and were quite happy to answer any questions and even followed up with a tech team after the event to make sure I was really getting the most out of it.

After a quick meet and greet we were handed envelopes, this is where it got interesting… and a little like something out of a bond movie.

We were introduced to our brand new phone and encouraged to rip it out of the box and start using it straight away. In a matter of minutes our crash course on the important features and functionalities was covered and we were told to open up the envelope to discover our mission. Here’s a sneak peek into what’s inside the box…

We were lead into a large room that was dimly lit (this pic was taken earlier in the day) and very atmospheric. Large scale nudes by Charles Billich adorned the main walls and stained glass glimmered. Around the room there were problems to be solved, each leaving a clue to bring us closer to cracking the secret code.

In order to solve each step we had to use certain features and apps… waaaaaaay more exciting than sitting at a table having someone tell you about a phone, we actually got to experience it and learn first hand. You can see me in action in the video below.

What do I think of the phone? Well, I really like it. I’m comfortable with the phone I have now but the Optimus G has made me rethink how I use a phone in a business sense. For weeks I carried around both phones everywhere I went to see which one I would stop using first. The only reason I’m still using is mine is because I don’t have a case for the Optimus G yet. It has such a sleek, delicate design that I’m afraid I’ll damage it.

I’ve had it since March and I would definitely recommend it. I really wanted to take my time getting to know it before I wrote this post, if I didn’t like it I wasn’t going to give one away with my seal of approval, simple as that. You should know that the battery life is good, really good and that’s important to me. I’ll be taking the Optimus G with me to New York as I also love the big screen, the “cheese” function, memos and time capture. Consider my mind blown.
