recorded inside our bathroom because our neighbour's dog was too noisy. using 12 string acoustic guitar. at the end, the one string jumped into the other string's nut section and you can hear the note going out of tune.

How to improvise with Jazz Guitar Music

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Wed, 10 Sep 2014 02:08:00 +0000

A Fun way to play Jazz and to enjoy playing to your heart's content!

Improvisation in jazz needs skill and practice. But just as much time that is devoted to learning the chords and different exercises, patterns and methods of playing jazz guitar, is also the same amount of time the learner has to devote learning his style and sound.

I tell you it is easy and fun.
Just how do you learn to cultivate your own playing style and method when you are still a beginner?

I will share to you some ways that i have picked up over the years.

Try to learn a song, take a simple song like ‘Blue Moon’ and learn its chord pattern and melody, once you have done this then you can play on your own without the song playing in the background as a guide.

Now try to play the song melody for fun and add bits of notes in between the lines of melodies. Imagine that you are playing the song as a guitar solo and you have to do it all the way through and in the middle of the song where you do not have to play the main melody, you can add your own made up/improvised tune that is in harmony of the chord pattern. I think there is no real rule to this, just make sure that it sounds ‘in harmony’ how to know that it is? Try recording yourself playing the guitar and listen to it after. Pick which parts sounds not in tune with the song, and then you can try to improve on it from there.

A lot of Instrumental Jazz players play the whole first stanza of the song all the way to the chorus first, then on the second stanza they do their own stuff improvising until they reach the second chorus or refrain, then the main melody again followed by lots of improvisation till the end.

Below are three videos that I want to share to you a few videos about Improvisation that i stumbled upon online. I am sure they will give you a healthy dose of inspiration, it sure did to me!

Few words and inspiration
about Improvisation from Joe Pass

In this video, He starts out playing 12 Bar blues then proceeds to talk about how he did start out in improvising and gives tips and helpful reminders, he really stresses about how to keep it ‘simple’

Soloing in Jazz Guitar Primer
by Joe Pass

In this 1 hour video Joe talks about the different chord substitutions for common chords so that they would sound cool and hip and not boring, this is specially important if you play solo guitar because the attention will only be on you and nobody else.

Guitar Chords for Soloing
in Jazz/ Blues Guitar by Joe Pass

Jazz and Blues mixes very well and the tips that Joe teaches us in this video can very well be used while playing in both genres.

Jazz Culture and Improvisation references
No matter how learned you are, you will always learn something from reading, watching instructional and performance videos, and picking up your guitar to play even for just ten minutes everyday.

Inspiration
Personally hand picked videos that will inspire you to learn jazz guitar improvisation.

Martin Taylor - Georgia on my mind

George Benson & Earl Klugh Dreamin`

Martin Taylor Interviews Tommy Emmanuel About Fingerstyle Guitar and Jazz Guitar Lessons

Music I recommend
instrumental jazz improvizations on guitar

Here are a few albums i have listened to and have greatly influence my playing and appreciation of jazz guitar instrumental music.

Earl Klugh Trio Volume Two: Sounds And Visions
This album has beautiful renditions of classics that were used as movie themes, these songs i first heard in this album then later realized they actually had lyrics :)

Joe Pass: Unforgettable
Listening to Joe Pass play is a treat for my ears, his playing style is ethereal that every time i sit on his recordings to try to practice it, i just end up listening in sheer joy :)

The Best of George Benson
I do not know if he started it or not, but George Benson does guitar solo and also vocalizes the solo, which is for me is really amazing, i do not know if the guitar is following his vocalizing of the melody or his vocalizing is following the guitar solo

Martin Taylor: Kiss & Tell
I listened to this album often too, but i can only try to attempt the kind of improvisation he does, he plays it very clean and in an unboring way, unlike those generic guitar instrumentals that you often listen to in coffee shops.

Parting thoughts
Jazz Guitar Improvisation is fun! So be sure to experience that when you are playing. That is why I like jazz and blues so much, because you can improvise as much as you can to your hearts desire.

You can listen to my impromptu recordings here.

blues tonight

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Thu, 28 Aug 2014 15:19:00 +0000

tonight i sat for a while and played some blues tunes and recorded three times. maybe you will not agree with me and will hear just a 12 string acoustic guitar playing but no music at all, that is ok, im sure a couple of years from now, i when i listen to these recordings i would still say to myself 'i was really good with the guitar back then' :D

i think i did this tonight because i have not recorded any blues tunes with a 12 string acoustic guitar before, i think.
