LOUIS VUITTON SERIES 3: INSIDE NICOLAS GHESQUIÈRE'S MIND

With much anticipation to Louis Vuitton's official announcement about Series 3 exhibition finally head to Singapore as its second and final destination, the heat still remains boiling hot during the second week after its opening on 28th November. I used to hold much of expectation for every art exhibition I went to before. Yet after being blown away by Hermes – Leather and Forever exhibition last month, it's best to not mentally prepare anything and get ready for the total daze.

Here's the walk through of Louis Vuitton Series 3 I'd love to talk about.

As many of fashion insiders out there whom having a heart for the French fashion house already know, Louis Vuitton's "Series" exhibitions were meant to bring the runway show to people who haven't been to Paris Fashion Week. It was originally Nicolas Ghesquière's brainchild after his first runway show during Fall 2014 season and quickly had Series 1 held in Shanghai and Tokyo late 2014. With Ghesquière's deliberation to document and present to audience his design progress whilst let every detail in the show speaks for itself, Series 3 is promised to reach a greater height, showcase the "past, present and future" of LV.

This time round, the immersive and sensorial sartorially-inspired curation of art and photography guides visitors through the creative director's inspirations for Fall 2016 collection, explore plenty of facets of Louis Vuitton whilst unveil the savoir faire of the Maison's signature products. Just like its predecessors, this edition is designed to decrypt the spectacle and exalt all the craft and creativity that goes into it. Audience will be walked through a series of experiential snazzy rooms, allowed themselves to immerse physically in the universe and spirit of the man and brand.

Which awes and goes into everyone's mind firstly is how Louis Vuitton did their venue setup at Marina Bay Sands. Little do they know, the location had a lot to do with the decision to make Singapore the second and last stop for Series 3. Set against iconic Singapore skyline at The South Crystal Pavilion, it's the second time the luxury brand unveil a whole Island Maison solemnly for the show, yet it's a remarkable moment to occupy two pavilions at once, paralleling the house's first, one and only island in 2011 which situated at the North Crystal Pavilion. The gleaming, half-submerged South Crystal Pavilion was what Nicolas looking for, a prime spot to present Series 3 purposes – look back at the "past", be in the "present", whilst also looking towards the "future".

When Louis Vuitton first launched its teasers for Series 3 back in July, it came no surprise when two names Bruce Weber and Juergen Teller showed up since they were also the one who interpreted Nicolas's vision for the last two Series. Along with the release of Fall 2015 campaign earlier through the lens of two renowned visionaries, a story about the brand's spirit of innovation and travel heritage has been told and it's a premise to have a better understanding about Series 3.

Series 3 graces their audience with 7 rooms this time : Mastermind, Artist’s Hands, Infinite Show, Accessories Gallery, Walk-in Wardrobe, Tale of Craftsmanship and Lounge. As your first step into the venue, the brand's quintessential oversized neon logo will make an entrance greeting. It's been merely 16 decades since the logo first marked the brand's signature in 1854 and undeniably becomes one of the most globally recognised logo in the world nowadays. With a brilliant mind, Nicolas has always been trying to revive and innovate the brand's signature through multiple modern designs. And the entrance is an act of symbolisation emphasis, clearly showing Ghesquière's intention how this century-old logo has travelled from the past to the present, projecting us further into the endless future.

The second is the 'Master Mind' room which features the iconic Louis Vuitton trunk in the middle, opened with holographic displays, peering into both the heritage and mind of Ghesquière as he seeks inspiration from the famed legacy of the French luxury house.

As you take a seat at the 'Artists Hands' room, craft men will be inviting you to place your hands on the table, which is actually an interactive screen that springs to life and mimics your hands doing everything it takes to make a handbag. It has been long known how the craftsmanship always get short shrift at the front row, even for fashion professionals. And this room is designed to slow people down enough to exalt details, such as a print made by re-digitising Vuitton’s classic monogram or the intricate handiwork in the Petite Malle and Dora.

The 'Infinite Show' presents the excitement of a live fashion show, with 48 looks presented on the full body-length screens, with models walking toward the visitor. With a clever placement of mirrors, the runway show reflects into an eternity.

Taken above were in 'Accessories Gallery' room, which inarguably my most favourite. The room is set in a blinding white atmosphere with white mannequins from artist Mei van Haaster, embedded in walls and plinths, putting the sole focus on how Louis Vuitton's Fall 2015 handbags and shoes. More than brilliant and intricate settings as well as installation, this room presents to visitors how accessories have and always been a major component of a look likewise defining its allure, indeed.

The 'Walk-In Wardrobe' showcases the myriad possibilities to dress up for any occasion, with select accessories and ready-to-wear pieces and a fur coat to match.

The final room – 'The Lounge' presents to us a sprawling sticker wall. Exhibition goers are invited to take these stickers with them as a piece of the maison to keep and embrace the travel ethos of Louis Vuitton and personalise your luggage with pickup initials. Or, better yet, get creative and personalise your goods with the Fall 2015 accessories that you're coveting.

Michael Burke, chairman and chief executive officer of Louis Vuitton once said in an interview with WWD that "Fashion is a circus. There's very little discussion about the content. But you have to go into the before, the during and the after. And if you do it in an appropriate way, it's unforgettable." With Series 3, I believe the vision Burke and Ghesquière have seen and yearning to achieve, has been completed. It's an extraordinary experience not only fashion lover but also everyone should have in a lifetime.

A sneak peek from my set last night working with these brand new bad boys from Tom Ford's LIPS AND BOYS collection. I was incredibly excited when Tom Ford officially introduced 25 new shades into the collection this year and finally had chance to meet them in person for the last couple of days. They were much more surreal than I could ever imagine. Glossy, bright, natural, modern and classy – all were fitted in a $50 lipstick. Thank you Tom Ford for breaking gender roles and extend normcore boundaries in modern world.

I've had a couple of concepts to work on for #TFLIPSANDBOYS and can't wait to finish them all. Just incase you haven't known about #TFLIPSANDBOYS yet, here is the promote campaign from Tom Ford since last year when he first released 25 original boys for the collection. Trust me, it's beyond imagination in real life and absolutely fabulous.

Now if only I could own all 50 boys I would never get bored for the rest of my life !

CHANEL CAMERA CLUTCH ILLUSTRATION

Waiting for the paint to dry. My final interpretation of the camera clutch from CHANEL Paris in Rome 2015/16 Métiers d'Art collection.

It looks mediocre and boring to me (no shameless self praise nor shade just tea) but this is solemnly my best attempt. Anyone who’s a massive fan of fashion out there has to admit that the latest collection of CHANEL might just crown Karl’s best edifice in the art of extravaganza despite it’s only a Pre-Fall collection. In other words, Karl has outdone himself again, for the uncountable times. To fully understand any given collection from an objective point of view is a very close step to look through the designer’s heart. With much admiration and percipience, I was struggling to express Métiers d'Art’s spirit through brushes and paints. The art of couture, texturing, embroidery, embellishment, layering, makeup are surreal and every single detail in clothes and accessories is masterpiece. It’s a showcase of Parisian essence through the delicate and intricate handwork of CHANEL's specialist craft suppliers and couturiers.

I was talking to some of the fellow artists on Tumblr who also making this collection’s illustration yesterday just to see most of them went ahead and claimed it’s surprisingly easy to capture it all through painting. I understand that every artist has his own aesthetic and a distinctive perspective towards any piece of art but at this point I was more than confused. Either that I’m too talentless or that all the monsters out there are too brilliant. Along with this painting is more than 31 drafts something of the clothes that I already threw into the trashbin. This piece alone went through 4 drafts as well but I’m still not very impressed with it.

Dear Karl Lagerfeld, you’re making me feel hopeless inadequate miserable useless and all. But I love you, forever.

ONCE AND FOREVER – A FILM BY KARL LAGERFELD

Ever since Anna Wintour first let Renee Zellweger's allure gracing the cover of Vogue back in 1998, the line between fashion and celebrities has been indefinitely blurred. Or in other words, it revolutionises itself to stay relevant in the modern time.

For the fashion house Chanel, with a true visionary like Karl Lagerfeld at the helm for the past 32 years who has always been ahead of the time, these two factors are brought to a whole new level, making a sweet rendezvous with the Seventh Art – Film. Their esteemed founder – Gabrielle Chanel – glorious and resplendent life, has and always been Karl's ultimate inspiration for plenty of short film titles in the past and future.

Back in late September when Karl made a public announcement on his upcoming film Once and Forever starring Kristen Stewart and Geraldine Chaplin, as always, it has stolen all the limelight from media. The film is set as the prelude to the Chanel Métiers d'art collection in Rome at Cinecittà, a legendary film studio complex in the capital. And with its premiere last Tuesday, all waiting patience proven to be worthwhile. But what makes Once and Forever standing out from the rest of Karl's films, could be nothing more than the brilliant layering art Karl has played in it. Let's cut it to the core.

Firstly, let's talk about the concept of this movie. Karl once said in an interview how he desperately wanted Once and Forever to show audiences the real Coco Chanel. And with that determination, Karl has decided to direct it from a fresh perspective, go behind-the-scenes of the troubled production of the Coco Chanel "biopic," while also managing to inform viewers about her life in the process. The film revolves around Kristen playing a spoiled actress cast as Chanel, and actress Géraldine Chaplin who plays the real Coco Chanel in her later years.

"The final image of Chanel is not her youth, her lovers, her beauty—it's the old lady. People who know the history of fashion know, but the public doesn't see the woman, who she really was. That's the story of the movie." – Harper's Bazaar's interview.

Now let's go back to our main character. First off, Kristen Stewart – the Hollywood blockbusters and Twilight star who has been the face of Chanel since 2013 and most likely will still reign the French fashion house's 2016 campaign as well. Plenty of debates have been made on Kristen's acting ability but there's one thing nobody could deny is her charm in every single campaign she's starring in. The combination of a million-buck commercial face, an editorial bone structure and surreal American charisma, surprisingly but undeniably, is the muse Karl has been looking for all these years.

The role American sweetheart was playing in Once and Forever is rather different than what she has always done, yet it does prove she's actually a brilliant actress of our time. Channelling Irys Duke – a stereotypical diva-type actress who essentially has more than trouble getting into the character of Coco Chanel in a biopic and doesn't fear to give some shit to the producer. "Go hire another fucking actress!" she screams in one scene.

For more than 11-minute, what's showing on the screen is how much distress and annoyance the director has to bear, how deep in emotion Geraldine is swallowing and how hard-headed Kristen is. Yet it seems there's very little attention has been paid to Kristen's complicating and metaphoric twist in emotion and gesture. Mentioned Kristen in an interview earlier this year, Karl said: "She can look like Chanel, and I wanted to show Chanel through all the decades of her life and the comeback in the 1950's." Anyone who learns enough about Gabrielle Chanel herself, understand that Kristen has done an excellent job in portraying all kind of emotion that Gabrielle went through at the time.

Another thing we should have our eyes on is Stewart's costume throughout the film. The American star brings to life Chanel's looks of the era in a number of period costumes, wearing her brunette hair up and donning a straw hat and glamorous gowns. She is also seen with thick eyebrows and her hair up as she poses awkwardly in a long coat with a high, frilly white collar while in costume. In another scene, she shows more of Coco Chanel's timeless style, wearing a glamorous black dress and long pearl necklace as she dances with a handsome costar. In one quick scene set backstage, Kristen is seen yelling during a blowout fight with a film producer, while photographers capture the row. These couture pieces Karl has made showcasing all eras that Coco went through in the past, and if you pay attention closely to each piece, you could read its history and how tightly it's related to Coco's personal life, only in case you learn about fashion history enough. I must say these are timeless scenes in the film as personally, I think Karl hasn't done/focused on it very much in his previous movies.

Lastly, Geraldine Chaplin will no doubt feel right at home, as this is the fourth time she’s played Coco Chanel in the designer’s films. Every last role Geraldine has played have always been mesmerising and captivating, and this time it's no different. The Charlie Chaplin’s daughter appeared in the film as an actress playing an older version of the designer, who slips into her role with remarkable and enviable ease, but is fussed over less by the crew. The film ends with Chaplin light-heartedly proclaiming “I am Coco Chanel!” with Stewart giving her a surprise affectionate hug from behind, replying “Always and forever”. Barely any talk has been done from the beginning, yet the raw emotion she's expressed through her eyes and gesture are priceless. It wouldn't be exaggerating when Karl claimed she is "one of the greatest actress of our time." Both entertaining and puzzling factors are incredibly well-done in Once and Forever, and shall it be a fashion film everyone should watch.

My latest illustration work experimenting some new methods
and playing with mixed media. The Aquafina ad campaign has been up in my mind a lot recently and it inspires me to do something fresh to my paintings besides pencil and watercolour.

It sparks in my mind of a series I would create in the future following the topic Liquid Dress channelling some of my inspiration from Spring 2016 and Fall 2013 season. Most likely it won't particularly follow exact any designers' pieces since I only take inspiration from it and have plenty of my individual signatures in. Hopefully I won't disappoint myself in the first place.

Paris Fashion Week Fall 2015

Fashion is revolutionising itself. And that leads to a booming of fashion week all around the world. From the most prominent fashion hubs in the West such as New York, Paris, London, Milan to fresh and lesser-known as Florence, Barcelona, Madrid, Stockholm and so on, which caused the East to strike back as equally competitive opponents. The latest fashion weeks in the East have been Jakarta Fashion Week, Vietnam International Fashion Week, Seoul Fashion Week, Tokyo Fashion Week all happened last month and Philippines Fashion Week is coming to the scene in the next two days on 27th Nov in Manila.

I have had a great opportunity to attend one of them – which is Jakarta Fashion Week (JFW) for the first two days. In comparison to Vietnam International Fashion Week (VIFW), which is my homeland fashion week and also happened at the same time, JFW has caused less a stir than VIFW in term of controversial streetstyle from fashion devotees and bloggers themselves. Fashion is a playground. And when it comes to streetstyle, shall we all have some fun and not take things too seriously? Let's discuss it with me today.

Seoul Fashion Week Fall 2015

It's not even new anymore to say bloggers are the new paparazzi. Or, more precisely, fashion bloggers wielding digital SLRs, clustering together outside fashion events - are the new paparazzi. During the Fall season, there seemed to be a minor but perceptible shift in the general attitude towards streetstyle photography. People started to dread the endless requests to be snapped and resent the constant assessment of their style. It's easy to see at any fashion show how the venues could get completely out of control and mad chaos due to increasing numbers of camera-toting fashion reporters for no less than 2 hours before the show actually happens.

Is it really blogger's fault to blame? Perspectively it needs to be taken under consideration. As you walk around Jakarta Fashion Week, running the blogger’s gauntlet at the entrance to Senayan City, how many people can you see who really look authentic? Does that girl run for the bus in her 8-inch platforms, sheer skirt trailing in the wind? Did that young man actually travel on the tube with purple lipstick on? The mysterious fashion choices abound. But what is certain is that, not only are we fed up of endless sartorial straight-ups, but we’re pretty much done with those of you who play up to the cameras. We say, bring authenticity back to the streets. But, as always there is more than one side to any fashion story – is street style photography here to stay or are we ready to kick the cameras to the curb?

Jakarta Fashion Week Fall 2015

Obviously we know that not every streetstyle photographer sets out to hassle their subjects and the medium itself didn’t become as popular as it currently is for no reason. Rebecca Gonsalves, the Fashion Assistant at The Independent runs a streetstyle page that features in the i-newspaper on Saturdays. She feels that the page is, ‘a lovely way of re ecting the eclectic styles of our readership and showing them how, sometimes scary, fashion trends can be achieved’. It has to be said that one particular reason why the format is successful is because it conveys a sense of democracy and accessibility that is not traditionally felt in fashion. By seeing a picture of a regular person on the street dressed impeccably, or demonstrating one of the latest trends, readers are able to relate to the image and feel that the look is achievable. This is probably not the general reaction when staring at the photo-shopped Amazonian models that grace the pages of Vogue each month. Similarly, though not as accessible, seeing off-duty models, top editors and stylists on the street enhances a sense that fashion is achievable outside the unreality of editorial shoots and runways. In the same way that blogs have become popular because they represent an independent shift away from the impenetrable fortresses of magazines and fashion houses, street style is a photographic medium which, when used correctly, actually enhances the individual’s relationship with fashion. A well-chosen street style image can have as much impact on the industry as any high fashion shoot.

Tokyo Fashion Week and Seoul Fashion Week Fall 2015

We are all aware that the popularity of street style photography is usually credited to one man; Scott Schuman. Selected as one of Time Magazine’s top 100 design influences, Sartorialist, came onto the blog scene in 2005. His simple shots of style inspiration on the streets of New York captured the imagination of fashion lovers everywhere, arguably leading to the widespread popularity the genre has achieved today in print and online media. However, those with real understanding of the business know that street style photography had a much earlier pioneer. If you could give a glimpse into a documentary on Bill Cunningham, Bill Cunningham New York – a film by Richard Press, explores the life of the 86 year old New York Times fashion photographer. A group of his candid street photographs, including one of Greta Garbo, was first published in the newspaper in 1978. His column, ‘On the Street’, has chronicled the fashion choices of New Yorkers, both known and unknown, for decades. At 86 he’s still dashing about town demonstrating a true passion for his craft. His work crosses the boundary between street style photography and that of the classical street photography genre. Not only that but his subjects love him – Anna Wintour herself has been quoted as saying that, ‘we all get dressed for Bill’.

Classic street photography is when scenes of a city, whether grand and panoramic or intimate and candid, are captured to portray the general atmosphere and impression of society at the time. Another positive aspect of streetstyle photography is that it mirrors this attribute and can be a vehicle to document the overall feeling and style of the city in which the photographs are taken. Oscar De La Renta is reported to have said of Bill Cunningham that, “more than anyone else in the city, he has the whole visual history of the last 40 or 50 years of New York. It’s the total scope of fashion in the life of New York.” Gonsalves mirrors this sentiment when it comes to her work in the i newspaper, “every city has its own style, and reporting fashion from the front-line is a great way of re ecting London’s individuality and creativity”. When done properly, it seems that streetstyle photography is really a form of social reportage. However, today, other than a handful of individuals such as Scott Schuman, Adam Katz Sinding, Tommy Ton, and Garance Doré, the streetstyle photography genre has become nameless, faceless and soulless. Not only is the behaviour of the multitude of style hunters becoming fairly irritating, but the overuse of the medium is also starting to become apparent. Almost every print fashion magazine has adopted it in some way and anyone with an internet connection can start their own fashion blog and hop on the bandwagon.

Seoul Fashion Week Fall 2015

The fact that documenting street style has become so popular is actually serving to nullify the authenticity of the looks that are captured. Will Welch, a senior editor at GQ, used to comment on the subject of street style in a debate on The New York Times website. He feels that streetstyle has ‘become a self-aware rather than accidental culture, like reality television. The more outrageously you dress, the more likely it is you get snapped and posted online’. The likes of Bill Cunningham and even Scott Schuman, before all the hype, were always capturing real people with genuine style, but, according to Welch, even “real people” are now dressing for the cameras, vying to get photographed. Now it seems that the streets are the new runways, trends are tending towards the unfortunate and ‘real’ has become incredibly contrived.

Seoul Fashion Week 2015

This sparks in my mind the crisis VIFW has caused in late October on their attendee's streetstyle and also two prime cases of Hoang Ku and Kelbin Lei – two of the most renowned and talented stylists in the modern fashion scene of Vietnam and also two that I adore and have great respect for.

Last month, when all eyes were on VIFW for its high anticipation with the special appearance of Kenzo himself along with dozen of fantastic collections by designers from all around the world, the local media decided to play around fashion devotees' outfits since they certainly knew that's what would sell. Fashion has and always been debatable. And it came no surprise for me to see how it grew to such a massive parley on social medias. The thing with fashion is that, there are many people out there who like to wear ridiculous clothing because, for them, it is self-expression and it makes them feel good. Equally, people convert to their fashion tribes because they feel part of a group. Then there are the individuals. The ones who simply do not care what people think, but wear exactly what they want with no boundaries and no worries. That's what makes fashion fascinating and enchanting.

Streetstyles from Vietnam International Fashion Week 2015 that are considered "disaster" by media

Talk about Hoang Ku, a Vietnamese stylist who lately attended Milan Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week, has confessed on his personal Facebook how struggling he has been during the time he ran in-between shows. The fact that a solid talented stylist like him who has been working in the industry for years but not some no-name fashion devotees trying to get attention through their absurd fashion sense, still had to hop on silly trends and dressed a bit "not-like-himself" to be captured has revealed such a gloomy side of modern media and how the table is being turned for streetstyle authenticity. To be photographed at fashion week means you exist. And if you're unfortunately not, well better go crazier next time.

Hoang Ku at Milan Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week Fall 2015

In the case of Kelbin Lei – an eminent Vietnamese stylist whose minimal dark aesthetic has become his trademark, attracts 80.000+ followers on Instagram – who recently attended Tokyo Fashion Week is just another story. Instead of going all out on a distinctive flavour, he chose to channel his traditional aesthetic and still caused a huge attention from both Vietnamese and Japanese media.

Cases that I have exemplified above leads to a serious question, how should we see streetstyle as a whole through a fair kaleidoscope?

Perhaps we all need to take a good look at ourselves and try to figure out why we chose the particular outfit that we’re wearing today. In many ways fashion is a show; it should be exciting and is often over the top. But true style should always reflect the wearer’s personality and be a vehicle for experience and emotion. If you dress for the cameras you will never be an expert or an innovator because your passion isn’t fashion – it’s notoriety.

Seoul Fashion Week Fall 2015

In my humble opinion, street style is on the out – the fickle fashion world will soon tire of the level of contrivance that is unfortunately becoming associated with this, once innovative, photographic genre. Bloggers need to back off, get their cameras out of our faces and really consider what it is they’re doing and what they aim to achieve – because no one likes content without purpose. The impact that fashion has on culture and the way that trends are interpreted on the street is an incredibly important social phenomenon that needs to be documented, so approach it with care and respect. Remember Bill Cunningham and the level of passion that has allowed his column to survive decades of fashion trends.

As for the rest of us – of course we’re going to dress up for Fashion Week, and a bit of friendly competition never hurt anyone, but let’s try to make sure what we’re wearing really does reflect our individual style and not just what we think is going to get us fashion-papped. Personally I would rather not have to see ankle bandanas becoming the next big trend because someone thought it would be esoteric and ‘totes amaze’ on their blog.

Alessandro Michele and his journey on exploring and redefining the conception of contemporary art through the eyes and mind of 7 artists from all over the world in the centre fashion hub of East Asia.

With the latest introduction of four menswear/womenswear collection from Spring, Cruise and Ready-To-Wear 2016 as well as the Cruise Spring 2016 Fashion film, there's no doubt on how Michele's vision for Gucci has grown stronger than ever. But yet, the visionary doesn't simply leave the mass media to stop buzzing.

Only within a month since the iconic presentation of Gucci Womenswear RTW Spring 2016 in Milan, Michele – teaming up with LOVE magazine editor Katie Grand – have already been back with a massive strike to the East by kicking off an exhibition in Shanghai from Oct. 17th – Dec. 16th at Minsheng Art Museum. By showcasing 7 selected artists their own unique perspective and creativity on modern contemporary, Michele aims to cherish and embrace the contemporary spirit of what Gucci has always represented, under a fresh kaleidoscope.

Participants include Chinese contemporary multimedia artists Cao Fei and Li Shurui, American sculptor Rachel Feinstein, conceptual artist Jenny Holzer, British photographer Glen Luchford and Nigel Shafran and illustrator Unskilled Worker. Exhibiting venue is divided into a series of rooms composed of creative artists on display in various spaces, incorporating Alessandro Michele's personal art collection.

Glen Lunchford

Glen Luchford's display portraits a modern conception of magazines, billboards, bus stops and subway stations in a native environment of popular pop culture. The British photographer not only lays out never-exposed images from Gucci A/W 15 but also implies a quiet atmosphere of noble exhibit unusual feeling into his art.

Alessandro Michele

Meanwhilst, Alessandro Michele personally selected a picture of his beloved portrayed as a complex, one of the oldest and portraits of unknown provenance, a result of the relationship between clothing and gender ambiguous stranger, he fell into the flow of time, the being "Here" and "Now" box on the moment.

Nigel Shafran

Unskilled Worker

All portraits exhibited above are painting from A/W 2016 collection. Unskilled Worker romances the brush with her unique approach, from a child's eyes to observe the adult world, everyone is meant to hop on a new ride with Gucci. She said the new clothing line at Gucci let her have a sense of nostalgia:. "Reminiscent of the first time you fell in love clothes."
