when your client (those crazy Ophelia Fancy girls) gives you a brief to shoot that consists pretty much entirely of saying the word "shazzy" a few times and doing Jazz Hands, plus occassionally throwing swatches of Leopard print fabric at you, you have to think long and hard to come up with something that will work.

So here it is, 1 of 3 from a series, that owe more than a headnod to late 70's and early 80's spectaculars such as The Fall Guy with Lee Majors and maybe a touch from those racin good ol boys from Hazzard County. In fact American TV has had far too much influence on how I think- sometimes in a good way, throw all that in the mix with some classic Essex suburbs stylee and you end up with this, speedboat in the front garden steez.

This was lit almost entirely by Matt, snoot up high to get a circle of light, shoot thru umbrella left of frame, shoot thru umbrella right (pointed down on legs) and a Gold reflector to fill.

At the first sign of summer, throw on a little denim number, some high high heels and totter around the pool. If yr classy you get the drinks to follow you, whilst yr shadow throws statuesque shapes.

Stanmer. Monday.
Before the mayhem of the 14 person pool shot, we went to Stanmer Park and shot a 5 page editorial all on Polaroid film. It would have gone perfectly apart from hiding from the rain, having to use some flash to boost the grey day, leaving expensive gear in the long grass. It was getting so unusually dark for 6pm that laying down was pretty much the only way to keep the exposures from being mad blurry....long. Fortunately Sarah can look fresh for days, even when shes waiting for me to get set up....

Stanmer. Monday.
Before the mayhem of the 14 person pool shot, we went to Stanmer Park and shot a 5 page editorial all on Polaroid film. It would have gone perfectly apart from hiding from the rain, having to use some flash to boost the grey day, leaving expensive gear in the long grass, then just as we were on the last set-up, somwhere around 7pm, the last tiny bit of sun appeared low in the sky and sent out some 'save the day rays'.

Alice Glass of Crystal Castles . She spent most of the gig writhing across the heads of the audience or being pulled around by the security who just couldnt work out what to do with her. No fancy lighting, no photoshop retouching but a stupid amount of hard work in the set up. This was someones bedroom 3 1/2 hrs before this shot. It had green walls, and a wooden laminate floor. Sally, Matt and I ruined our clothes, 2 sets of great speakers, two chairs and even the coffee table from my house to make this work. A shed load of cardboard, a bucket of white paint, one false door squeezed in and all this after pretty much no sleep in 3 days from shooting the Great Escape festival. No surprise we were delirious by the end of the day. The false perspective is by matt- after some frenzied napkin sketchin' from a rushed beer in between gigs the night before as I gabbled my idea out to him. The band are Gloria Cycles (will link soon) and I will post the room transform shots in the blog tonight.

Went to London yesterday to see some great shows, the New York School at the Michael Hoppen gallery and saw some incredible work by Alex Prager, then went to see one of Hitchcock's earliest silent movies at the NFt as part of the Fashion in Film festival. Go to the BLOG to get all the links.

this is as different as anything I have posted in about a year, trying to shoot quick and unposed for a while and more importantly trying to figure out what goes on in my mind next..... (this is kinda my TeenWolf/Clubfoot period- those who know will know)

This shot was commissioned by the Guardian for their Guitar Guide which came out this weekend. Shot during a soundcheck at Komedia, which meant we had to keep stealing the gear back from the roadies and laying it back out on the floor, plus every few minutes a tech guy would appear on a ladder in the background- testing their lighting rig. The brief was to show all the kit she uses- so had to change up the style a bit to make this work. LauraMary is ace- and very patient considering how much I was fussin over cables and the fact that it was black dress, black guitar and black stage backdrop

7pm light has its own kinda look

So the hard drive is off at the Data guy, so lets just bounce on.

The idea here was grab some packs of film, a couple of polaroid cameras and backs, a stack of underwear from Ophelia Fancy, some heels and go shoot fast and loose in the fields of Stanmer Park. Except I cant shoot fast and loose, I try but it just aint me, (you can see in the blog soon) so I dragged out the Speed Graphic, stuck the camera on the tripod and shot some large format polaroid. The heels had long since come off too.

1/30s f22 think both the shutters are way off speed......

see it large, go on, seeing as it costs me bout £5 per shot on this film

I cant begin to describe the trauma of the past 4 days- all computer related- that has led to possibly losing my past 2 years of Raw and processed files- including the Cali Trips- and yes I had backed up to seperate external drives- but a crazy timed power cut, whilst 2 drives were performing a routine back up meant I was greeted with drives that wont mount and have to pay a visit to the Data Retrieval guy tomorrow. Instead of getting angry- cos its only computers- I tried some Buddhist zen kinda shit persuaded Sally to bunk off work and went and shot some polaroids (altho this is actually fuji fp-100c) to maybe start the whole collection again- with real prints not just binary....

so this is real light, real film, no tricks, no reflectors, and back to pretending to line up a shot and check the focus but really just waiting till she looks away for a second and popping that shutter.

I was gonna put this next to the other shot as some kind arty diptych- but i kinda like it on its own- plus i get to upload two flicks in one day, that rarely happens even in the same week.
I have a slightly better version of this shot but its far too rude for flickr.... (to find out more about Cherry see the previous image.) And to see the whole set I will post a link up when its ready from BA.

the scar on the ankle is from falling off a bar when dancing, told you this girl was wild dope....

6 trains, 7 hours of travel to get to a small village just 50 mins north of London- what the hell is wrong with this country? Then a manic search for places to shoot- me being too picky an all- and Cherry driving crazily round suburbs in a car running on fumes...... A whole bunch of memory cards and banging on strangers doors later and another shoot in the bag.... Cherry is ace, laughs a lot, wanders round the room looking hot in just a pair of rock n roll shoes, but sure as hell cant make a sandwich, her fridge is stocked only with nail varnish, at least 30 bottles in the door- apparently it keeps the colours fresh. (mines full of polaroid so i couldnt laugh)

This shot may well make Gary a bit angry- font issues can bring out the 'stare' in him.
