I am therefore surprised to see how many people are not in control of their online persona. The only information that google turns up is what others have written about them

David made the same point the other day, with his quote “The cat is out of the bag, and the only way to take back that control is to get out there and have a presence, have an identity that you feel represents you.” and I wholeheartedly agree.

For my first several years online, my google results were a real mixed bag: USENET posts from 1996 about trading band tapes, programming questions from mailing lists and forums, and miscellaneous other snippets that certainly reflected what I was doing at the time, but not who I was.

In 2003, however, I got caught up in an incident which immediately dominated the first couple pages of google results for my name. It’s still out there if you want to find it, but basically, my company did something bad, people attacked us personally, and I stood in the firing line trying to deflect the bullets. Admittedly, in the moment of passion, I didn’t handle things in the best way (and i certainly know better now), but it was very disheartening to think that this is what people would see when they looked me up online.

At that point, I became obsessed with the challenge of making sure that a single heated email exchange was not what people discovered when they googled me. I started writing a livejournal. I posted photos. I had my friends link to me. I left my name wherever I could.

But then I realized that this wasn’t about covering up something I did, this was about presenting myself the way I wanted to be seen. And from that point on, once I finally understood that, everything just fell into place. I joined conversations, made myself visible, and have made a lot of great friends in the process.

Now, a few years later, I completely own my online presence. And it’s not a game or a ruse, it’s who am I, and how I want you to know me.

Jimi Hendrix - Red House

This week’s Amazon MP3 $5 deals includes the remastered Are You Experienced? which 1. sounds terrific, and 2. features an additional 6 songs than the original album, including one of my all-time favorites: Red House.

I only have this album on vinyl, so I was psyched to pick it up for such a bargain, although it’s one of those albums that makes me want a really good set of speakers, so it may not end up being such a bargain after all!

I met Zach Hale at the Mashable SummerMash event tonight. It’s cool to make a real-world connection with someone I follow online (and to introduce myself with “I follow you!”) — even if he doesn’t follow me! Turns out that I know Zach’s roommate, Adam, too.

Also in attendance were a bunch of the Seattle tech scenesters, and it’s always great catching up with the crowd. There’s a lot of awesome stuff going on in town!

Yesterday, I was contemplating building a new widget to play all of the songs tagged with specific themes in TheMusic (theme+music), a tumblr group that I’m part of. The more I thought about it, and thought about my limited flash & design skills, I figured I should take a look at existing players than spending the time on building my own.

XSPF (“spiff”) is an open-source XML format for audio playlists. For you other old-schoolers out there, it’s like a really simple version of SMIL. There is a nice open-source flash-based XSPF player out there, so it was simply a matter of getting the tumblr playlist into XSPF. A short while later, I had whipped out a little perl script to do just that, and it works like a champ.

This quick hack won’t win any programming awards, but in case you might find it useful, here it is! There is one slight detail that you’ll need to fill in to get around the basic tumblr download-protection “drm”, which I didn’t want to publish, but it’s pretty easy to figure out. If you do, use it responsibly!

Also, I’d suggest running this via cron or whatever, and caching the result, but it is written as a CGI for simplicity sake.

On Sunday, July 13th, Burning Beast will host ticketed guests at Smoke Farm for a feast of medieval proportions. As many as eight cooking teams have been challenged to master one of six specified animals, whole or in parts, using fire, earth, steel and little else. Participating are many of Seattle’s most notable chefs, including; Dylan Giordan (Serafina), Maria Hines (Tilth) Angie Roberts (Boka), Nick Albrecht (Brasa), Matt Dillon (Sitka and Spruce), Garret Abel (DeLaurenti), Dustin Ronspies (Art of the Table), Gabriel Claycamp (Culinary Communion), Ron and Larry Jones (Jones Glassworks). The event is BYOB and casual. Guests should feel free to bring tents, sleeping bags, swimsuits and healthy appetites. Overnight campers are welcome. Country air, coyote songs and delicious food guarantee a great night’s sleep!

I really want to go to this, but I have a class (Pickling & Preserving) that afternoon, and Brooke has to work until 7.

Well, it’s a nice sentiment at least.

Baltimore natives love to take pride in drinking Natty Boh. There’s nothing better than an icy cold Boh on a hot and humid summer’s day. But don’t be mistaken, this is not a good beer, it’s just the city’s Schaefer, Hamm’s, Blatz, or Olympia.

I remember the first time I had a Rainier when I moved to Seattle. Compared to my beloved Natty Boh, I thought it must be one of the famous NW microbrews!

Ironically, just like all of the other regional brews, Boh is no longer made in Baltimore, it’s just another label printed by Pabsts or whichever mega-brewery currently owns the brand.

Still, I’ll probably pickup a six-pack next time I’m in town…
