Sunday Ride: Revisiting Kwebang Lampas

NOS revisit Kwebang Lampas, Volcano Island, Pagbilao, Quezon last February 19th, 2012. This time the more the merrier from a previous Team Cinco or The Five. Started at Shell J. Vargas, C5 around 3:00 am with a headcount of 33 consisting of 25 bikes and 1 van. It was a day everyone expected to be a rainy day, somehow encountered a little to mild in the morning and a normal to bike heavy rain in the evening.

It was around 4:00 am when NOS reached Calamba City to meetup with the Shaman. Two riders decided to opt out due to a flat-tire. The journey continued on and later stopped at San Pablo City for a quick break to join up with the cage (4 wheeled vehicle). Everyone had a quick breakfast and chatter.

Crisinco and Win_26

We then traversed the road to continue the journey in complete darkness, there are little to no-street lights in between towns, danger is around every corner. The convoy is cruising at 50kph to 80kph in safe distances. It was to our surprise to encounter a tragic mishap of two people and a crumpled bike in the middle of the road in between the Provincial Highway of Tiaong, Quezon and San Pablo City. Authorities is at the scene, it seems that the two people is not wearing helmet and had been caught in an accident, possible victim of Hit-and-Run. It was later we found out at the fish port in Lucena that an alleged car run over the riders in tandem and was left for dead. That is why we take safety seriously.

As we navigate thru the empty roads of Quezon, daybreak is around the corner and continued to cruise and took the diversion road of Tiaong, Quezon and head out to Lucena City for a gas stop and a quick visit to Dalahican Fish Port for freshly caught fish.

The gate and no gate-keeper. On a side note, from my previous post regarding Kwebang Lampas. Formerly owned by Lukang Family and care-taker Aling Divina no longer incharge. The new owners allows overnight stay by camping. Targets to re-open on April with new facilities and still has a pending court proceedings as mentioned by the new care-taker.

The way home is more challenging, Rain started, Night fall and no Gas Station. We missed a few stations from Pagbilao to Tayabas road. We had an emty tank, and gas was siphoned from another tank with a lot of gas. Heavy rain was encountered around Tayabas and Lucban area, rain gear was on, backriders are in the cage.

Pagsanjan Laguna is the break off point for the Shaman's way home and the main convoy. Two more riders tagged along on their way home to Paranaque and Sucat. This time it is not a solo-ride home.

Touched down at around 8:00 pm at Calamba City. While the rest of NOS is cruising Tanay Rizal, in darkness and rain and two take SLEX Service road.

The Shaman's total distance covered at 242.73 kms. with an elapse time of 15:19:48. This is a short ride, a day ride and a Sunday ride. Since KL(Kwebang Lampas) is now allowing overnighters, a day is not enough to enjoy the place. The hardship of this trip is worth every smile for the beauty of the place. This is a ride, the destination is only the climax.

How to Secure your NetGear Wireless Router with WPA/WPA2

In this article I will teach you how to secure your wireless network if you are using Netgear Wireless Router. This applies to other routers, they only differ in some menu orientation but follows the same concept. This is in response to Raszonjenny who asked in the comments.

Configuring the router to require a passkey or passphrase to connect, to prevent unwanted workstations to use your network or internet connection.

I highly recomment using WPA/WPA2 for encryption, WEP is so easy to crack. With the right tools and know how, you can easily crack it in less than 20 minutes.

So here goes with the walkthrough after the break.

How to Configure WPA/WPA2 on your Netgear Wireless Router.

Step 1: If you are using your desktop pc or any pc that is connected to the router by cable to configure the router so much the better. Fire up a web browser of your choice and type in http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1. Now you will be prompted with a username and password to continue.

Type in for username "admin" then for password is "password." This is the default for Netgear Wireless Routers. Now check if you are on the right page. If you accessed the modem using http://192.168.1.1 it means your router is configured to use IP address http://192.168.0.1. Take note of that.

Step 2: Check the menu, what is there for you.

Notice under the Setup click on Wireless Settings as shown above. You will get to a page that is similar to the image as shown. The name or SSID is the name of your router that you see when a wireless device search for a hotspot. You can name it to anything as you wish.

Step 3: Choose WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK in the choices for security options, then under the Passphrase is your desired wireless key password to connect to your wireless router. Type in any password you desire and you are all set.

Step 4: Click the Save button and wait for the router to restart.

Hope this helps, the next time you access the wifi router on your wireless device it will prompt you for a passphrase then just input the password you saved here.

Globe Wimax doesn't allow port forwarding

Have you been a Globe Wimax subscriber and realized, why can't I forward a port? You need to forward your port if you have an IP Camera in your network and wish to view it from the internet, browse and transfer files from your NAS (Networked Attached Storage), or Host your own website from your computer, or you want to host a game server for your friends to logon to.

Here is a temporary solution for those you having problems behind Globe's Broadband Proxy. I use a neat software tool such as Teamviewer. You can download them for free personal use, just head over their site and grab some. Regardless of your OS, because there is a version for every flavor of OS you use.

First is to install it on your host pc, and also install it on a client pc/mobile device (laptop, iphone, itouch, ipad, android smartphone or tablet). I will not go into detail about installing it, because you can install it easily by following the install wizard. Teamviewer uses a random password and unique ID to identify the host pc accross the teamviewer network, which will be the ID of the pc you want to connect to. Take note of the ID that automatically generated for you by Teamviewer. You can configure it to use a permanent password or allow a client to connect without user intervention on the host pc. This is very useful if you are outside your home, and wants to connect to your home pc (Teamviewer needs your host to be turned on and online).

Second is to install Teamviewer to your client device (This is the computer or device you will use to control remotely your host pc) Follow the same procedure, but this time use the ID of the host computer you want to connect to and type in the permanent password you set to log in and create a session. Note: (You can freely use this between devices that has the same version of Teamviewer or You can only connect a lower version with a higher version and not a lower version to higher version.)

Once you logged in, you will be able to use the host pc as if you are physically infront of your home pc. This works if both devices are online. With Teamviewer you can easily do tasks or transfer files bothways, run applications on host pc without the hassle of configuring your router and modem to do port forwarding.

There is another Tool you can use that has the same functionality like LogMeIn/Hamachi.

Sunday Ride: Marifanta

MARIFANTA - Marilaque Twisties and Infanta, Quezon (Marcos Highway R-6). This is the route for NOS' Year End Ride for 2011 last December, 11, 2011. Road Condition is smooth twisties to technical, a few rough and hazard cliffs, rain and fog.

Call time was 5:00 am to 6:00 am at Shell Marcos Highway in Marikina. The Shaman always do a half ride, meeting up with the pack at the middle of the ride. This time it will be different, he will be joining from start to finish and do more by doing solo ride to complete the other half of Laguna Loop.

It was 3:00 am dusk partly cloudy and cold. The Shaman started the expedition from 711 in Checkpoint, Calamba City with a bottle of energy drink and taking notes of his odometer reading.

3:30 am Started gearing up to head north to Marikina via SLEX service road and C5. It was a breeze, with minimal traffic and clear streets cruising at nominal relaxed velocity of 60-90 kph. It was 4:30 am for the first stop at Petron C5 to stretch out some discomfort.

Starting Assembly

By 5:00 am sharp the shaman arrived at the assembly spot and joined with win_26 for a chat while waiting for the others. As the sun started to spread its prowess in a partially cloudy sky, darkness starts to hide, one by one participants arrived until they reached a head count of 16 riders. Started with a buttercovered pandesal thanks to ichie and begin the journey with a short prayer.

The pack started to weave thru the traffic with two 500cc scooters who marshalled the group Sir Stir and Sir Al, assisting the team to safely pass and remind other motorists to slowdown. By 8:00 am the group reached Shell Sampaloc to fill up their tanks before continuing.

The view in this twisties of Marilaque is spectacular, with smooth asphalt, thick lush greens to the left and right of the road, including the cliff and sorrounding mountains. The clouds kiss the road, it was foggy and the air was fresh and chilled. It was beautiful as we put it. Made a stop at a 3 way intersections where riders always hangs-out to have breakfast and coffee.

The pack encountered some two short rough road ranging from 10-20 meters, 1 half road with the other half landslided to the depths. The fog was thick giving you a 10-15 meter visibility, it was challenging. NOS encountered a few breakdowns in the middle of the mountains with a faulty ignition, and it was then decided to fix the bike at the town where the group will rest and have lunch. Dadi Pits the road warrior mechanic then pushed with his right foot of the downed bike at a speed of 70-100kph from cornering to straights and overtaking. The defective bike was like its engine was on. It was impressive, looks easy and difficult as hell. Soldering the wires didn't help so an idea was to bypass the wires with a toggle switch. Now you have a bike with a keyless ignition.

Lunch was served by the beach with just a few dishes that made the group smile with ecstacy. Buttered Shrimps, Grilled Pork belly or Liempo and Yellow Fin Tunas, and some Sinigang Tuna and the best part of it is, it's free thanks to Sir Click_me . A few more fun photo ops and Redman entertained us with his yoyo exhibition tricks that made bypassers struck an awe look and a round of aplause.

It was 2:00 pm when the NOS started to take off for the journey home.

Rain will be expected so Rain Gears was on. The pack heads home via the same route, this time it was cruising mode doing 60 kph smooth acceleration and in 1 line tight formation. Darkness will soon meet them at Sampaloc. So it will be a dark way home in Marilaque for the rest of the gang.

As for the Shaman, it was only half the way. He then take instructions to find his way home thru Tanay, Rizal via Mabitac to Siniloan. Pitch Black darkness started to cover the way, it was cold and some road kills with insects as it hits the visor. The road was beautiful, smooth asphalt with smooth turns and twisties.

Siniloan and onwards will be a majority of straigths way back to Calamba City via Sta Cruz, Laguna. It was 8:15 pm when the Shaman touched down with a final ODO: 26806.8 reading. Clocking a Gross total of 447.6 KM of Road and priceless experience with a dash of comraderie of disciplined and defensive riders.

General Purpose of the Ride:To remind every rider of their main purpose and their reason for riding, may it be a hobby, a passion, a way of life or one’s means to commute. We share the roads with not just fellow riders, but other vehicles and pedestrians as well. How we must maintain dicipline, safety and responsibility for our property and when we take on the roads with our motorcycles. How we must be prepared to accept and acknowledge the problems and do our part in helping out in fixing these problems. How we must embrace change and help instill it with every single rider out there.

Facing Reality:
With the rampant growth of the motorcycle population, the government is facing a very difficult and challenging issue. They have to maintain control and keep our roads safe for everybody who uses it. This is not an easy task and our cooperation is imparative to ensure that the measures being done are carried out properly and equally amongst all road users. We must understand that being on the road is not a right, but a privilege. However, we all have the right to achieve that privilege by proving ourselves worthy of the licenses we all carry with us.

Simply put, we have issues surrounding motorcyclists and we have to accept and acknowledge these issues first and foremost. Starting from ourselves, we must practice the proper behaviour and dicipline on the road and share that with our fellow riders as much as we can. Once we have done what we need to do within our own ranks, we then help the governement by being good examples on the road. This is your simple monkey see, monkey do scenario.

However, we are facing legislative issues where our rights are being taken for granted. We must remind the law makers and enforcers to respect and adhere to constitution and the rights granted to us as citizens of the country. We must help them get back to the right path and offer our knowledge and cooperation when necessary and maintain the status quo on the laws that govern all of us. We must report those who enforce and break the laws at the same time so that they can clean up their own ranks as we clean ours.

Official Position Statement:
With that said, we are here not to file protest or regress towards them but, we are here to remind them that we have rights and that we humbly ask them to enforce the existing laws instead of creating new ones. To ask them to follow the old procedures and apply the strict implementation of the existing laws and procedures befor and after we acquire our licenses. To let them know that we are here to offer our assistance and cooperation in getting everybody, private, public or government back on the right track. To help remind everybody to adhere to the Constitution and Bill of Rights that guide us all. To help in letting everybody know that we must work together and not against each other. To help remind every single road user to respect others to be respected. To remind everybody that we have rights as they have theirs.

So in the essence of unity and change, we call on every rider to be part of this era to help provide safer roads and equal treatment for all road users. To provide support and offer suggestions during consultation for projects aimed at safety and law and order. To unite the community and advocate dicipline, safety and equality for all road users. To show the world that not all riders are irresponsible, careless, undiciplined, criminals and a nuisance on the road. That we can share the road and respect all those who do the same.

And with that said and put aside, let us now start with the long road ahead by stating our opinions and suggestions for the government below. Everything will be compiled and be presented to them when we are given the oppurtunity to do so. Please keep your posts relevant and diplomatic. The use of profanity and jargon will not be tolerated. If there are questions to be asked, please keep the answers relevant and avoid side comments.

Rules and Regulations for Motorcycles:
1. Should be registered and all papers should be brought.
2. All lights (headlight, signal light brake light) should be working and in compliance with the law.
3. Should have a working muffler.
4. Should be free of leaks.
5. Should have a working horn.
6. Should have side mirrors.
7. Should have a side stand.
8. Road worthy tires, properly inflated and checked for possible nails and cracks.
9. Fuel must be filled prior to assembly.
10. Cooling system checked (Engine fan and water for liquid cooled bikes).
11. Brake systems should be checked.
12. Suspension should be checked.
13. Chain and drive belt should be checked.
14. Liquids should be checked (brake fluid, coolant, oil level, etc).
15. No blinkers and wang wang.
16. No flags, banners or posters depicting protest for anything.
17. Flag poles, antennaes should be secure.
18. No firearms, sharp blades or objects or deadly weapons.

Rules and Regulations Riders for Riders:
1. Should wear a MOTORCYCLE helmet with a strap and visor or eye protection when visors are not available.
2. Should wear closed shoes (No crocks, slipons, sandals, flipflops, etc.).
3. Long sleeves (jersey, jacket, poloshirt, long sleeve shirt, arm stockings, etc).
4. Should wear gloves for riding.
5. Long pants (jogging pants, slacks, jeans, riding pants, etc).
6. Must be licensed for Restriction 1.
7. Must NOT be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
8. Properly hydrated and moderately full.
9. No children below 9 years old allowed on this ride.
10. 1 backride only.
11. All backrides should comply with the rules stated above except for #6.

Although it is not a requirement of law to wear long sleeves and long pants, we STRONGLY encourage everybody to be on their best gear for rides. We have to show that we are responsible and dedicated enough to be prepared for riding. SAFETY and PROTECTION is one of the keys

Rules and Regulations for the Ride
1. Dicipline, Safety and Courtesy should be exercised at all times.
2. Stay on formation always.
3. No passing unless signaled to.
4. No speeding (maintain the speedlimit even when catching up with the group).
5. Follow and adhere to the ride pace.
6. No stopping on the middle of the road except for traffic and stop lights.
7. Watch for hand signals (Will be breifing everybody on the assembly and will provide pictures at the end of this post).
8. Maintain 2 bike lengths between bikes.
9. Do not honk your horn unnecsarily.
10. Allow other vehicles to cross between the formation smoothly and without sudden change of speed. Remember, we do not own the road.
11. Indicate potholes, humps, water, dirt, sand, rocks, debris, roadkill with your foot pointing to it.
12. When a hand signal is given, do the same to inform the others in the formation.
13. In case the formation gets split, do not panic or chase after the lead group. Maintain your pace and relax. Allow a ride marshal to go infront of your group to lead.
14. Never ride side by side. Always maintain a staggered formation unless signalled to go single file.
15. Red ribbons will be provided for on the day of the ride. Install the ribbon on your left side mirror without hindering the operation of your motorcycle.
16. Smile to the other road users .

Rules and Regulations for the Assembly and Landing Zones:
1. Do not leave your trash behind. ABSOLUTELY NO LITTERING!
2. Inspect your parking zone before parking.
3. Inspect your parking area before leaving.
4. Follow the Marshal’s instructions at all times.
5. No alcoholoic beverages or drugs in the assembly and landing zones.
6. Be at your best behaviour at all times. No rowdiness or un necessary noise during assembly and during the landing points.
7. Do not speak to media or enforcement anytime during the ride. Allow the organizer and officials of the ride to do this. This is to avoid miscommunication and misrepresentation that can ruin the purpose of the ride. Comments made by non officials will be considered as personal opinion and will not be considered as an official statement from the group. Your comments, suggestions and opinions will be collected below this thread and will be presented together with the organizer’s official position paper.
8. Please observe the margin of safety when taking pictures and video in these areas.
9. Do not be afraid to approach any of the officials and marshals if you need assitance or would like to ask something.
10. Please watch your belongings. The organizer will not be responsible for loss or damage to personal property.

Weather and Road Conditions

Inclement weather can be disruptive and discomforting. If the weather is too severe, take
shelter. Be extra cautious when rain first begins to fall. The road is slickest at that time. Avoid riding on the “glossy” (oil stained) area of the road at all times, but especially during or after a rain. Stones on the road are dangerous…be careful. Gravel behaves like ball bearings on a hard surface. Avoid potholes when you can safely do so. Potholes can damage bike rims and cause accidents. Signal others with your heel pointing down at road hazards.

Mechanical/Electrical Problems

Mechanical/electrical breakdowns can happen to any motorcycle. Someone will be designated to help, or have someone with a tool kit and cell phone stop to help the problem motorcycle outside of Metro Manila only. While within Metro Manila, you are responsible if you encounter bike problems that require you to stop. Other riders should continue the run.

Accidents

In the event of an accident, pull over with the group. Do not panic stop or rush to the scene. This may cause more problems. Do not move an injured person or remove their helmet. Do not allow a tow truck to take the downed bike. Locate a safe place to leave the motorcycle until a motorcycle hauler can pick it up.

Security and Parking

Participants in a ride may be required to watch motorcycles (if necessary) for a short time, in pairs. When parking, the leaders should direct the bikes to an area out of the traffic pattern. No one wants their bike side swiped or damaged by passing vehicles. Leaving a parking area should be done with caution, and consideration of others exiting… blockers may be needed to promote safe egress.

Law Enforcement

If the police or enforcers stop the group, the Spearhead should lead the group to a safe place. Riders should stay in formation (by or on their motorcycle). Allow the officer come to you. The Spearhead should be the only one who approaches the officer and should promptly identify him/herself.

Responsibility

A group, organization, or club is not responsible for accidents, injuries, thefts, etc. Each individual is responsible for any violation of the law. Riders ride at their own risk.
The group should meet before and during the ride regularly to pass along information. If you do not understand something, get clarification.

Experienced riders should get to know riders with whom they are riding. Encourage new riders to be cautious and to ride at the group pace…not unsafely or beyond their personal comfort level.

The group should ride to their destination in formation. If a motorcycle does not wish to stay with the group at the end or during the ride, wait until all bikes are parked before leaving the group.

If you leave your place in the group, re-enter at the rear, in front of the rear Ride Captains.

Riding in an unsafe manner with a group should not be tolerated. The safety of the group is everyone's responsibility. It is a rider’s obligation to report noncompliance of any group-riding rule to a Spearhead or Sweeper… a life may depend on it. Showoffs and hot rods should not ride in a group.

Know and ride by these rules, or do not ride with a group.

Safe riding is a group priority.

For Ride Marshals, Spearheads and Sweepers:
1. Refelctorized vests is mandatory. If you don’t have one, borrow or just ride with the group and let others do the duty of controlling the ride.
2. Use cellphone headsets for communication purposes. The important numbers to call will be provided for.
3. Install “Marshal” flags on your bikes. Make sure it is secure and will not hinder the opearation of your motorcycle.
4. Marshalls must be in the assembly area on or before 4:45AM (Group 1) and 5:45AM (Group 2) for the last pre-ride briefing.
5. No “lagare” style of controling the group. You must be in formation also.
6. Break away from formation only when necessary (traffic assistance, rider/bike problem, switching from marshal to temporary spearhead, etc.).
7. Taffic marshalls will be with the spearhead and will break off to allow the group to follow through an intersection or to warn other vehicles of the group.
8. Going back to your original position must be done with utmost respect to other vehicles and without overspeeding. Be a good example to others.
9. Do not block other traffic when un necessary. We do not own the road. Share it.
10. Assist the other vehicles trying to cross the line. Move in towards the vehicle who has the intention to cross the line and slowly guide the ride group to slow down and allow the other vehicle to cross. NOS sets out for a day ride last Sunday, October 30, 2011 to Laiya, Batangas. Took off 4:00 am in Manila down south thru SLEX service road heading to Calamba City by around 5:50 am. Clear Skies greets us and clear asphalts and pavement. Giving us smooth cruising to reach Lipa City by 7:30 am.

We had Gotong Batangas around 8:00 am and rested for about 45 minutes to 1 hour. We were not in a hurry, the road ahead is full of straights. By 9:00 am we are at San Juan, Batangas wet market to grab some food. Here we stayed for quite awhile while waiting for the others who joined with their cage (4 wheeled vehicles).

We had a few to minimal problem encountered, a broken pulley with papabong's fenk nouvo. So we had to lookout for bike shops along the way that has special tools to pry open the trainy. It was a Sunday and Holiday Weekend so some shops are closed. It was until we reach Tanuan, Batangas that we found a shop that can handle the trainy. Good thing Pres. Nick have a spare AP Racing pulley in his pocket. So it was a breeze switching the parts up. It was the best idea we had, than forcing the bike to return home with a broken clutch and pulley.

Going back home has a few detours, the group decided to take left at Tanuan, Batangas to take us to Talisay and head uphill with twisties to one of Tagaytay's Back door, thru Ligaya Drive. It is a 9 km technical uphill and twisties with no street lights. It was perfect, we crossed it around 7:00 pm, pitch black darkness and cliff overviewing Batangas and Taal lake adorned with star-like lights. How I wish I have a helmet mounted cam so I can record the spectacular view and darkness with only our headlamps showing the road ahead of us.

Reaching Tagaytay area we encountered slight traffic build up. At the Junction I turned right and bid the rest of the gang farewell, they will have dinner and take their chosen route going back to Manila. I will have to do a solo ride going down thru Sta. Rosa going back home to Calamba.

Sometimes we get bored on a lazy Sunday or weekend, we then try to do something to keep us occupied. Now here is an easy way to make your day, Cooking a home-made pizza. This is very easy and if your ingredients is also easy to grab.

You need the following;

Pizza dough (you can grab this at your favorite grocery in the refrigerated section)

Quick Melt Cheese

Bell pepper

Ham

Pizza Sauce

Mushroom Slices

First is spread your pizza sauce thinly over the dough to cover as desired, grab 2 slices of ham and cut it in squares or triangles as needed, bell peppers thinly sliced and mushroom slices. Evenly scatter it over your pizza dough with sauce.

Next is cheese, grate some cheese over it then use your oven, oven toaster or a convection cooker to bake it or toast it 5-10 minutes and your done.

Variation can be done, you can use bacon, beef or onions which ever tickles your fancy, you can use sliced bread instead of pizza dough to make pizzas. You can mix and match other ingredients to make other flavors as you like. Your imagination holds no limit. Hope you enjoy your weekends guys.

Traveling with GPS can be fun; here is a road trip to Tagaytay via private road inside Canlubang Estate, without using the most common roads.

There are several ways to get to Tagaytay;

1. via Zapote - Dasmarinas - Silang

2. via SLEX - Starosa

3. via Tanuan Batangas - Talisay

4. Via Tanuan - Tagaytay Highlands (exclusive/private road)

5. Via Canlubang (private road)

Here we used the Canlubang Estate private road since we are from around town, Using private roads can be convenient, it is usually uncrowded and gives you a non-stop experience, you will encounter less traffic and faster travel times. Not advisable if you get flat tires, can be dangerous or hard to get some help or so.

New BM622i modems being issued and released by Globe has new user passwords. To date, there is no known exploit to hack the admin user for this new set of modems that I am aware of. If your BM622 modem is not a patched firmware, unlocking its admin settings still works as I have posted here before. Now a new generation of modems such as BM622i has new passwords to begin with, the old user-user combo trick doesn't work anymore.

So have you ever wondered what's the password?

How to troubleshoot Garmin GPS Navigator on No-Name China GPS

Ever wondered buying cheaper GPS devices from your recent trip to China and later found out it can't get a decent satellite lock here in the Philippines? Here's what I did to workaround the problem.

I am refering to this no-name China GPS you can buy online from your favorite China goods seller. This particular device used for this guide is a 5 incher running a custom firmware and win ce 5. It comes preloaded with Garmin Mobile XT version 5.010W.

When I fired up Garmin it loads a script Garmin.mscr which preloads Port Splitter 1.20 before it loads the Garmin software. It takes forever when detecting satellites to lock into within Garmin. I have tried every ports listed and no luck.

Selecting the correct port will give you this. Take note, even if you dont have satellite lock,
selecting the correct port will instantly bring you to this part of Garmin.

COM6 is the one we used here for the output.

This is the satellite detected inside the house. Atleast 4 satellites to get a lock.

If things work, selecting the correct port will give you a hint your doing it right. If it continues to scan for an attached device/GPS device then don't bother going outside hoping it will work. If using the GPS receiver app with its built in application it can detect several satellites. Garmin can't detect the built-in GPS receiver device. It only means that the port splitter is not doing its job. The Port Splitter 1.20 relies its settings from script encoded to Garmin.mscr (Feel free to correct me if I am wrong)

Here's what you need to do, update your Port Splitter to version 1.30/1.31. When you first run this, it generates its settings to Settings folder.

After copying Port Splitter.exe (1.31) to your "SMMC/Garmin/RunGMXT/," Fire up win ce and open Port Splitter, Select the Input port as GPS Driver, then select the output port as either COM6 or COM8. You will notice that when adding an output port you can only see COM6 and COM8. Select either one it will give the same results. In my case I have selected COM6 (I have tested both). To check if it works, tap the start button then stop. If you have selected the correct ports you will not get an error, (You will be notified if the ports are wrong, an error pop up message will let you know). Tap the Exit button to unload, Then restart the device, Next after boot up configure or check the path to configure your Navi menu to the correct path to "SDMMC/Garmin/RunGMXT/Garmin.exe"

From within Garmin, select the appropriate port we used, If you have tried earlier running Garmin without the port splitter correctly configured you will notice that the ports available to be selected are COM0, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5, COM7, COM9. COM6 and COM8 are missing, this is because this are the free ports. But if your device can directly select the ports you won't be needing this guide.

Now select the port we declared earlier for the Port Splitter output which is COM6. Now ar this point, even if you're inside the house and not much satellite detected, you will know you got the correct port when you get a large text displaying COM6: COM6 Port Splitter.

You now need to go outside and test your GPS. Enjoy and Happy Navigating.

Why Globe Customer Service Sucks?

First BM622i

The Shaman have been a Globe Wimax subscriber for more than a year. I made several Globe Wimax Experience Reviews a year ago here, here and here. I have two active accounts, mine and my sister's. Three weeks ago, we reported about the drastic slowdown of bandwidth giving us a pathetic 10-100kbps on my sister's account that we are paying for 1 mbps.

From our experience. Subscribers call on the hotline at 211 to report technical and customer service issues. Customer Service Representatives then files a report where a Job Number will be generated and passed on to Sub-Contractor On-Site Technicians that visits your service address to fix whatever there is to fix.

The Issue:
Technicians replaced our old BM622 CPE modem with the newer/slimmer BM622i. The account is attached to the MAC address of the old modem, so the new modem has a new and different MAC address. After the replacement, there is a connection clocking at 512 kbps. The Levinson Technicians/Sub-Contractors informed us temporarily it will serve 512 kbps until they emailed Globe about the MAC Address change then it will resume to normal speed.

After three days, the modem got disconnected, no internet. The modem detects a signal ranging from 80% to 100% and we have another active account that has a connection. So this is not an area-wide issue. What we did next is to report again.

Second BM622i

Recycled Issue:
We started the same cycle and same issue. No internet connection again, then new tech guys came in and informed us that the modem is a temporary modem, they will replace it with a new one again. We agreed just to get the connection back. Second modem changed, same exit dialogue. They will email Globe for the new MAC address. After three days the modem got disconnected again.

Recycled Issue Again:
We made a report again. Customer Service Reps filed a report again. Tech guys are scheduled to arrive on August 19, 2011. We waited, no one came in. We made a report on 211, Now the CSR said, the job order was closed.

Sub-Contractor Issue:

The technicians is closing the issue without visiting, solving the problem and filling their report "No Problem Found" or "Problem Solved"

Solution:
Update our account to the gateway server of the new MAC address.

This issue is very simple. Since there is inconsistency or there are personnels that are incompetent in the roster of Globe and the Sub-Contractor that higher management is not aware of. I am very much satisfied with the service honestly (the connection) but when it comes to customer service, the process, non-technical CSR handling technical issues trying to troubleshoot over the phone without any technical knowledge and following the script by the book is really annoying.

My sister is burnt out and switching to another internet service provider. My account however has no problem as of the moment and covering for the downtime of my sister's account. If in the future will have a problem, I have a very good idea of what to expect. If there is no problem it's great, good connection I made a few good reviews of it. However, eversince as also posted on bradleyfarless.com here and here posted a year ago, Globe's Customer Service really sucks.

UPDATE AUG 23, 2011: A new set of tech guys arrived August 23, 2011. Explained with better clarity. Provided us a temporary Modem to restore internet while waiting for the request for a new Modem. What has transpired is that the first batch of tech guys, replaced the first modem but failed to document the change of MAC Address. While the second change was documented, and no record or trace of the first MAC address assigned to the account. Let's see what will happen next, if the temporary modem will last for 3 days and get disconnected again while waiting for the 2 to 3 days for our assigned modem.

UPDATE AUG 29, 2011: We decided to have the account disconnected, we visited the nearest Globe Center at SM Calamba. The guy who received our complaint suggested to have it one more go, if it still fails, he gave us a number to call and proceed with the disconnection of the account. The next day we got tech guys replacing our modem for the 4rth time, but this one is different. They installed us a modem with no active connection and informed us to wait for it to have a connection that Globe will give us a call. They said that the new modem is attached to our account. Finally, then after 6-8 hours we have a connection and we were surprised that the bandwidth clocks 1 mbps. Now this is what we wanted in the first place, took us about a month of endless hotline, visits to Globe centers and the whole army of tech guys visiting everytime and repeating the same temporary solution that expires after 3 days.

CONCLUSION: If you have lost your patience and decided to trash your Globe Wimax Account, Globe tries one more time to keep you back and do their job. But still they suck at this department "Customer Care."
Maybe having two many sub-cons or outsourced company under their wing makes their reputation suck.

My 3 year old baby "Ham" is addicted to PSP (Playstation Portable). She plays, Monster Hunter 3rd Portable, she can't hunt Dragons (Rathians or Rathalos) yet, but sure can hunt the small to medium monsters. Ham also plays Patapon 2 and Tombraider as an alternative. And occasionally World of Warcraft.

Lately it's been hard for me to part her away from my PSP. We argue over her playtime.

So I decided to turn her enthusiasm into a more productive experience, When she was 1 year old, I spent time teaching her ABC's with www.starfall.com a site dedicated to learning how to read, learning ABC's and numbers.

Utilizing today's technology, PSP 2000 has a wifi adapter and a flash enabled web browser. I just punched in the URL and gave her back the PSP, Now she can learn her ABC's with ease, fun and interactively play a minigame after every alphabet lessons.

Learning needs to be fun and interesting. I highly recommend this site, if you have kids.

The letters are clickable, and takes you to another page with vivid colors to get your kid's attention with sounds and voice.

A fun way for the kids to learn. Aside from watching educational videos on youtube. A good flash-enabled touch tablet will be great for this. I'm thinking of buying one for my kids.

The Sands of Kwebang Lampas

150th Birthday of Dr. Jose Rizal celebrated June 19, 2011, Father's Day and NOS's RIDE Day while heavy rains devoured Manila.

Majority of the participants with this Ride to Kwebang Lampas, Pagbilao, Quezon was last accounted to 10 riders. Due to the rain and zero visibility, four remained and took off from Manila 0600, armed with rain gears, and trailed old highway alongside SLEX to head to Calamba City to join up with The Shaman (saisake mcp). 0730 the fantastic four arrives and becomes the furious five and continued on the journey. With minimal rain and dark to clear skies onwards, NOS cruised the road until they reached San Pablo City and stopped for a quick break (45 minutes to 1 hour.lol).

We continued on the ride, cruising speeds of 60-80 kph and bypassed the town of Tiaong, Quezon by using the newly built diversion road and pass thru the streets of Candelaria, Quezon. Sariyaya and Lucena City was just a breeze until we arrived at the outskirts of Pagbilao, Quezon.

One of the furious five was eager to go home that day despite the group's encouragement to stay, Art still heads out alone to go back to his family for family reasons, since it was Father's Day.

As hours have passed, people are leaving a few batch at a time, some who have taken the same route we had, by the lake basin, others have boats waiting for them seaside. Until there is no one else left but just the four of us.

Overnight stay here is strictly not allowed, Plan B is to set up camp on the other side, which is outside the property. But we got lucky, we managed to get us a YES, we were permitted to stay.

Going back home will have a few changes, we head out to take Tayabas, Lucban, Luisiana and Pagsanjan route where the three will take Marilaque and Rizal route to get back to Manila. At Pagsanjan the Shaman will take a solo route to get back home.

The Four

We stopped for lunch at Lucban, at Buddy's before we head home. We encountered a few to more rain to get us wet while we cruise the twisties of Luisiana, we parked and get on rain gears to continue on. We slowed our speed to 40-60 kph to avoid accident, road is slippery, blind curves and heavy rain challenged us in the mountain pass.

We are grateful we successfully completed the ride, with no accidents, no flat tires, no slides and full of happy moments we experienced with Kwebang Lampas.

Globe Wimax plus One year of Service equals HP Officejet J3608 All-in-one

Globe Telecoms/Innove with their Globe Wimax offered us a Free HP Printer/Fax (Officejet All-in-one J3608) for being a subscriber for one year. Yes, It's been a year since my Globe Wimax Review here, here and here. They sent it thru courier after receiving a call from them regarding our One/First Year with the internet service.

The catch? Stay with them for a couple of years, two years to be exact. We have nothing against the service tho, except from the annoying customer service representatives. So we decided to stay, what the heck its FREE and we needed a new printer anyway.

To my surprise, I found some things I didn't expect to be inside the box. I found an empty wrapper of Sugo Roasted Peanuts, 4 soda pop caps, and 1 used up Sun Prepaid Card Load. Judging from the crime scene, I have an idea who the culprits are, either one of my baby girls Ham and Chiz stashed those stuff in the box opening. They even tried to pull out the guide manuals with the messed up fold traces on them. They sure did made me smile those naughty vermins.

HP Officejet J3608 All-in-one

Neat, now lets fire it up. I plugged in the power cords and turn the power on, I already mounted the ink cartridges and now it asked me to align the printer heads. From the manual, I should print an alignment printout.

Here is a sample printout of the test print, now to align the heads. Reminiscing the days of HP Deskjet ~~XXXX~~ (way back from the 90s) alignment is by choosing the correct printout of lines and colors and punching it in on the application/drivers from within windows OS, but this one simply asked me to let the scanner do the trick. Pretty neat actually, it has been ages since I personally play with printers.

Next is to test drive the print quality, I opened up a word processor typed in some text and inserted some photos and printed it out.

Its a surprise that linux kernel drivers recognized the printer thru USB with no additional installation, Plug and Play beauty as it is supported. So I did choose the printer and clicked print.

A Troll is born

Figuratively speaking, My Baby boy, opens his eyes to a new and bigger world called life.

Alaric Gavin, or "buns" (a new brother to "ham" and "chiz", I know I have funny nicknames for my babies).
gave me a blank stare when I first saw him at the nursery, a few hours later. He's beside my wifey's bed, crying when he wakes up, use up his diapers with baby poo. That's right, I changed his diapers, his first one actually. The same way on my two girls.

Watching him sleep makes me think of the future ahead, what would he be like as a troll, err a kid. Where will he be interested on doing and all kinds of stuff that runs around my head. For now, I will enjoy his childhood, the same way I enjoy my baby girls childhood.
