<p>There were 5 A&amp;E diverts in place during the 4 days up to 1 March 2012.</p>
<p>An A&amp;E divert is an agreed temporary diversion of some patients from one hospital to other A&amp;E Departments to provide temporary respite. A divert is only undertaken as part of the local health systems’ planned and managed escalation when a hospital is under pressure.</p>
<h2>A&amp;E closures</h2>
<p>There were no closures during the 4 days up to 1 March 2012.</p>
<h2>A&amp;E attendances and emergency admissions</h2>
<p>In the week ending 01 March 2012, there were 430,261 A&amp;E attendances and 102,335 emergency admissions. For A&amp;E attendances, this was 0.1% lower than the previous week and for emergency admissions, this was 1.4% lower.</p>
<h2>Beds closed due to norovirus</h2>
<p>There has been a decrease in the number of beds in hospitals closed to admissions due to infection control procedures being triggered by patients having diarrhoea and vomiting, or norovirus-like symptoms. <a title="Advice about norovirus" href="https://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/20121004143356/http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/Norovirus/Pages/Introduction.aspx" target="_blank">Advice about norovirus can be found on NHS Choices.</a></p>

<p>Estimates suggest that flu-like activity – that is, the number of people with flu-like symptoms seeing their GP – is currently low. For week 9 (ending 4 March 2012), the weekly primary care consultation rate for flu-like illness in England was 15.1 per 100,000.</p>
<h2>Flu vaccination</h2>
<p>The provisional end of season vaccination uptake rates show the following position at the end of January.</p>
<ul>
<li>74% of people aged 65 or over have had the flu jab.</li>
<li>52% of patients under 65 in clinical risk groups have had the flu jab.</li>
<li>45% of frontline healthcare workers have had the flu jab.</li>
</ul>
<h2>Admissions to intensive care units</h2>
<p>Since early October, there have been 162 flu-related admissions to intensive care units (ICUs) reported across the UK. There have been fourteen deaths from confirmed influenza in ICUs reported so far this flu season.</p>

<p>Estimates suggest that flu-like activity – that is, the number of people with flu-like symptoms seeing their GP – is currently low. For week 6 (ending 12 February 2012), the weekly primary care consultation rate for flu-like illness in England was 15.6 per 100,000.</p>
<h2>Admissions to intensive care units</h2>
<p>Since early October, there have been 118 flu-related admissions to intensive care units (ICUs) reported across the UK. There have been five deaths from confirmed influenza in ICUs reported so far this flu season.</p>

<p>Estimates suggest that flu-like activity – that is, the number of people with flu-like symptoms seeing their GP – is currently low. For week 5 (ending 5 February 2012), the weekly primary care consultation rate for flu-like illness in England was 10.1 per 100,000.</p>
<h2>Uptake of flu vaccine</h2>
<p>The weekly collection of flu vaccine uptake data which runs from November to end January has now ceased. The figures below are therefore unchanged from last week.</p>
<p>Vaccine uptake in England is higher than last year except for pregnant women.</p>
<ul>
<li>73.9% of people aged 65 or over have had the flu jab, compared with 72.6% last year.</li>
<li>51.4% of patients under 65 in clinical risk groups have had the flu jab compared with 49.8% last year.</li>
<li>26.4% of pregnant women have had the flu jab compared with 37.5% last year.</li>
</ul>
<h2>Admissions to intensive care units</h2>
