Davao Entrepreneurs and Organizations Receive Presidential MSME Awards

Selected business establishments from Mindanao earned recognition from the Office of the President last July 8, for displaying outstanding performance in the field of micro, small and medium enterprise.

Mindanao awardees — all from the Davao region — include Manolette Bakeshop, Lao Integrated Farm, AMS Employees Fresh Fruits Producer Cooperative, St. Mary’s College - Business Resource Center, and Medium and Small Scale Industries Coordinated Action Program II (MASICAP II).

These companies and organizations were recognized because of their respective achievements and contributions to develop MSMEs in the country.

This is definitely great news for Davao, because it shows a strong business backbone for the region.

Time to buy one bag of Manolette’s pandesal!

Math Research Project Might Save The Philippine Eagle

While most of us are looking for the next great opportunity, a student from Davao City seems to have found his.

At age sixteen, Jovani S. Tomale has already contributed to the preservation of the precious Philippine Eagle. With the help of a statistician and a research consultant, he has devised a computer-based mathematical model to determine the bird’s gender before it reaches maturity.

(Through my own web search, I learned that the gender of a Philippine Eagle can only be determined if it has fully grown.)

This is indeed a significant step in preserving the endangered bird. Before this project came into fruition, gender determination was a trial-and-error process as done in the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) in Malagos, Davao City.

Should PEF utilize this computer program (which they seem to be interested in), the guessing game of trying to breed the eagles will be replaced by a method that is measurable and scientific.

Tomale has received numerous raves and citations for his research project on the Philippine Eagle. He won second place in the 2009 DepEd - Intel Philippine Science Fair in Subic when he first entered this project during his last year in Davao City National High School.

Recently, he bagged the 2nd Special Award from the American Statistical Association, through the International Science and Engineering Fair held in Nevada. He is currently an Accountancy student at the Ateneo de Davao University.

Kudos to Jovani, for sharing his talents and intellectual whizbang to save the eagle’s existence.

Wifey and I are currently in our “interior design conceptualization” mode, and are trying to look for new stuff that can accentuate and improve our simple home.

If you’re in the same mindset as us, then you might get excited with the Furniture Fair at Gaisano Mall of Davao. The event started on June 29, and will run until July 15, 2009.

Various home furnishings come at discounted prices of up to 50%!

When we checked it out a few days ago, I was surprised to see loads of sofa sets, cabinets, tables and other eye-candy furniture proudly displayed in the mall’s Atrium.

If only I had the time (and the money) to purchase a spankin’ new sofa set…

BluGre Started Coffee Culture In Davao

I vividly remember the turn of the millennium when Davaoenos gradually grew a love for coffee. No, it wasn’t because of the need to stay awake, nor was it due to cold weather. It was because of one brand that jumpstarted the city’s caffeine craving: BluGre Coffee.

Even during its first few baby steps, BluGre Coffee has established itself as a premier-brand coffee shop. It is even touted as the Starbucks of Davao, with its strong brand marketing and excellent product quality.

While BluGre puts the Durian Gatchpuccino on their must-try list, our favorite is the classic Mocha. Their ice-blended Larcepuccino Coffee variants have also satisfied our palates quite a number of times. For desserts, nothing — and we mean, NOTHING — beats Banana Cream Pie.

Despite the emergence of more coffee shops in the metro, BluGre will always hold the distinguished title of offering the first great coffee experience in Davao.

The month of July kicks off with COMDDAP Davao 2009, an expo that showcases the latest trends and technologies from famous IT brands. This year’s event will be held on July 2-4, 2009 at the Main Ballroom of the Apo View Hotel.

A handful of computer and IT-related manufacturers and distributors will offer their top-of-the-line products in the three-day promo.

One of the featured brands is Canon, famous for its trendy digital cameras like the IXUS and Powershot models. ACTION-REPAIR Peace Gathering on July 1

Change starts from within. That’s how Davao City — and Mindanao, on a wider scale — should be envisioned towards prosperity and peace.

This year, Davao City will play host to a peace gathering of Mindanao’s key representatives from local government units, civic organizations and peace advocacy communities. This event is connected with ACTION-REPAIR, a two-year project aiming to improve the lives of Mindanawons gravely affected by natural calamities and socio-political conflicts.

To date, ACTION-REPAIR has lended its able hands to eight provinces in Mindanao, or close to 30,000 locals.

The peace gathering will be conducted at Garden Oases Resort on July 1, 2009. Expected in attendance are Vice Mayor Sarah Duterte, and party-list representatives Luz Ilagan and Satur Ocampo.
