I was at an event earlier this month with Nicole Paige Brooks and we were chatting about life “back in the day.” I realize that at 26 I’m still pretty young, but when I was 17 I came out (in more ways than one) and it’s been full steam ahead ever since. Anyway… I told her that I had a picture that we had taken together at Fusion where she worked.

Finding this picture has motivated me to scan and preserve some of my other memories. I’m setting up The David K. Archives on flickr. There are already some videos from my very first camera phone and now I’m adding other pictures.

“The Summer of David”

Damn Labor Day for ending what has been dubbed “The Summer of David.” No, I haven’t been trying to inspire a “Summer of Sam” type murder spree. I’ve been celebrating myself since being laid off on June 3rd and it’s been a really good experience. Actually, it’s been surprisingly hard to be unemployed for 3 months. I’m not used to having nothing to do, so I’ve taken time to do some volunteer work during the week.

Looking back this has been a memorable summer. I celebrated July 4th with my family in Las Vegas. It was nice to hang out with my parents… and to play craps with my father (because when he wins we all win). I tried to look up some of my friends, but I wasn’t able to meet up with any of them (I miss you, Chris B.). Speaking of family, my 82 year old grandmother came down from Baltimore for a visit at the end of August. She was here for a week and she stayed with me for the last 4 days of her trip. We cooked a lot and it was nice to be able to spend time with her.

I think I’ve gotten over my [apparently] ridiculous insecurities about boys. Last month was particularly fruitful (quality, not quantity) and it looks like I might actually be dating someone. Surprised? Yeah, me too.

The job search hasn’t been going as well as I would have liked. There just aren’t any positions available. Fortunately, I have been able to do some consulting work and I’ve maintained an active status within my industry (by participating in weekly discussions and brainstorming sessions). Right now would be the best time for me to finally take the courses to get my real estate license. I even have a broker that will work with me. Laziness and uncertainty have made me put off taking the necessary steps to make that happen. Hmm…

Soooo… it’s been fun and just as Labor Day marks the unofficial end to summer, so ends “The Summer of David.” I’m going to keep celebrating myself, but “The Fall of David” doesn’t really inspire optimism. Instead of coming up with another slogan, I’m just going to move forward. It’s time to either shit or get off the pot.
