Nicky Morgan, Loughborough’s new MP, was sworn in as a Member of Parliament on the evening of Wednesday 19th May. The ceremony, which consists of the MP swearing an oath of allegiance to the Queen, signing the register and shaking the Speaker’s hand means that MPs can sit in the House of Commons Chamber and take part in parliamentary proceedings.

Speaking about the ceremony Nicky said, “It is a very important part of becoming an MP but is rather low-key because it happens so quickly! I am delighted that I can now play a full part in formal parliamentary proceedings on behalf of constituents and I am working on what to say in my maiden speech. The Queen’s Speech on Tuesday is the next big event because we will then have a good idea about the new legisalation and how the new Government intends to fulfil the Coalition Agreement”.

”In the meantime I have been out and about across the constituency attending events at Geeta Bhavan, the Loughborough Women’s Aid Dragon Boat Race and a concert in aid of Rainbows. I also held my first surgery which was completely full (there are lots of people already needing my help) and have had meetings about Astra Zeneca, the one through schools issue, a meeting with the Chief Executive and Leader of Charnwood Borough Council and I had a very interesting meeting at 3M to hear about their business”, Nicky concluded business.

ENDS

26th May 2010

The 2010 General election is tomorrow, giving the British People, the chance they have been so desperately craving to have their say on who will help form the next Government. David Cameron today announced a contact between the Conservative Party and the British people, he described exactly what we would do to get this country back on track should we win an overall majority on Thursday. I want to tell you what it would mean for you, to have a Conservative Member of Parliament representing your views and concerns in the next Government, by telling you exactly what I would do for you.

My message to you is simple- if you want to change Britain then you have to vote for change tomorrow and, in this constituency, that means voting Conservative.

Here in Loughborough, the outcome of this election could make a real difference. Should the Conservative Party be elected on Thursday 6th May it needs to win key marginal seats like this. I want Loughborough Constituency to have a strong voice in the next Government. For six years now I have been campaigning hard for the chance to be the change that Loughborough Constituency deserves, working on behalf of many local people businesses and organisations for a better tomorrow. And I am proud of what I have been able to achieve during this time. Through my hard I hope that I have proved to you that I will be an effective and committed MP if I am lucky enough to be elected. I worked for 2 years to keep our walk in centre in the middle of Loughborough, I have made strong contacts in every community here, I have lobbied both the Borough and County Councils on behalf of local residents, I have set up a business club to encourage greater communication both with and within the business community, organized a constituency-wide Support Our Small Shops Campaign to raise awareness of the difficulties faced by our small businesses, I arranged a Community Safety Workshop, hosted 2 Careers Workshops and raised a great deal of money for local charities.

I want to be YOUR next Conservative MP because I believe that more could and should be done to improve life here in this constituency for you, whoever you may be. And if elected I promise I will be there for you when you need me, I promise to make myself easy to contact and see, to publish all my expenses online and to have them audited annually, to build a local consensus on how we move to 11-16 schools without losing the excellent schools we have, to support the AstraZenica workers as they look for new jobs and opportunities, to protect our green spaces locally and to out the views of local residents at the heart of local and national decision making.

I believe David Cameron has set out a clear vision of how a Conservative Government would make Britain great again and how we will trust people more to run their own broken society and restore trust in our political system.

I hope you will support me and the Conservatives tomorrow so that we can begin to repair the damage Labour and Gordon Brown have done to Britain.

Speaking after his visit David Willetts said, “I am very grateful to Nicky for inviting me along to this excellent college. Government needs to be much more imaginative in ensuring as many people as possible are able to come here and benefit from the first class training on offer.”

Nicky added, “I was delighted that David could see what a terrific job the College does and how it helps people to find new roles and to give them important skills.”

“Nowadays we support people with a wide range of disabilities and we welcomed the opportunity to discuss our work with Nicky and David”, concluded College Principal, Tony Warren.

The call for action came as Nickyspent time at Shepshed General Store on Charnwood Road, to discuss the concerns of local newsagents in this constituency with the likelihood of a change of Government after this general election. Newsagents work an average of 16 hours per day, seven days a week for little financial reward, yet they are an intrinsic aspect of our local communities. The 18,000 members of the National Federation of Retailers Association across this country are campaigning for less bureaucracy and more understanding from the next Government, over issues such as rising levels of crime against shops and shopkeepers, business rates and recent proposals made by the Labour Government to ban the display of tobacco products in shops, which is due to come into effect in small shops in 2013 and competition from supermarkets. “Newsagents are at the heart of the community and it is important that our voices are heard loudly and clearly by people who can make a difference”, said Shepshed shopkeeper, Mr Kacha.

Nicky Morgan added: “It was extremely useful to learn more about the challenges facing shopkeepers today, I know Mr Kacha and other retailers locally work incredibly hard within our local communities, often without as much as a day off, I shall certainly be campaigning hard for greater recognition of the difficulties faced by all small businesses in this area, should I be elected on 6th May”.

During the 2005 general election Nicky’s campaign slogan was ‘Listening to Loughborough’ (Constituency), ‘Loughborough Deserves Better’. Communicating with local residents was a key aspect of her campaign then and it has remained a vital element ever since. She has been campaigning hard on behalf of local residents, businesses and organisations in this constituency since 2004 and during this time has met and helped many local residents and made a real different in our area. Now more than ever, voters are keen to hear from their local candidates and Nicky is always happy to respond to any questions that local residents may have about her, her campaign, local issues and Conservative Policies.

To make it even easier for you to find out where Nicky stands on the big local and national issues that are important to you, Nicky will also be uploading YouTube Videos regularly throughout this campaign, in which she will directly address all of these key topics. Do also look at previous press releases on this site.

On Thursday night, during the debate, David Cameron repeatedly challenged Gordon Brown to apologise for the lies being peddled in Labour literature – that we would scrap the Winter Fuel Allowance, cut pension credit, end free bus travel for pensioners, get rid of free TV licences for the over-75s and scrap free prescriptions and eye tests for anyone over 60.

‘The Labour Party’s scare tactics are being carried out both locally and nationally and I know here in Loughborough there are many angry voters who are disgusted that their local MP would stoop so low as to put lies out about the Conservative Party’s policies’, said Nicky Morgan, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate.

We will keep these benefits. We have never said anything to suggest that we would scrap these benefits; Labour’s claims against us are lies. Conservatives will make sure all these benefits continue as both David Cameron and George Osborne have made clear:

“So David Cameron’s Conservative Party will not cut pension credits or winter fuel payments or free TV licences and bus passes. The pension age changes we make mean David Cameron’s Conservative Party can afford a more generous state pension.” (George Osborne Speech, Saturday, February 27 2010)

“Let me take this opportunity to say very clearly to any pensioner… you know you are getting letters from the Labour Party that say the Conservatives would cut the winter fuel allowance, would cut the free bus travel, would cut the free television licence. These statements by Labour are quite simply lies. I don’t use the word ‘lie’ very often, but I am using it today because they are lies. A Conservative government would keep the winter fuel allowance, would keep the free television licence, would keep the money for pensioners.” (David Cameron Press Conference 23 March 2010, as reported in Daily Telegraph, 24 March 2010).

‘I am deeply saddened that anyone would bahave so poorly, in order to try and keep his job, and I am pleased that David Cameron was able to get across to both the audience and viewers at home that Labour’s claims against us are nothing but lies’, Nicky concluded.

David Cameron, Leader of the Conservative Party was touring Leadenhall market in the City of London with Mayor Boris Johnson, when he said:

‘Today we are celebrating St George’s Day, and we are reclaiming St George’s Day as an important day I think for good reasons,” Mr Cameron said.

“And one of the most important reasons is that we should be reclaiming the flag from the BNP and saying the flag belongs to the English people, all of them.”

“We already celebrate St Patrick’s Day, we celebrate St David’s Day, we celebrate St Andrew’s Day and, yes of course we should celebrate St George’s Day.”

“St George is not just the patron saint of England, he is the patron saint of Lithuania, of Poland, of Catalonia, of Georgia, of Russia, of Palestine, Israel. So this is something that everyone can feel included in’, he concluded.

Nicky attended events at the Gurdwara in Clarence Street. Invited to address those present she said, “It is an honour and privilege to be here amongst many familiar faces following my earlier visits to your Gurdwara. Vaisakhi is a time of new beginnings and I know it is an important festival for all of you. ” She added that David Cameron sends his best wishes to the Sikh community in Loughborough too.

Nicky joined worshippers for a delicious lunch afterwards and discussed local and national issues with them. Nicky has previously arranged a meeting between worshippers and the County Council about parking restrictions outside the Gurdwara and she is hopeful this issue will be resolved as part of the Eastern Gateway improvements which are due to begin shortly.

Nicky Morgan, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Loughborough today met local members of the Equitable Life Members Action Group, including Graham Garner, who had run all the way from Leicester to demonstrate how strongly he feels about this issue. These Equitable Life policyholders are seeking compensation over the collapse of Equitable Life and the loss of their pensions.

Nicky said, “The policyholders of Equitable Life have been disgracefully treated by this Labour Government. If more than thirty thousand people had died waiting for justice in any other situation there would be rioting on the streets. Yet Gordon Brown’s government has been happy to kick the issue of Equitable Life into the long grass. Conservatives welcomed the Ombudsman’s recommendations as soon as they were published. However, the Labour Government, rather than following our lead, took six months to make a formal response and even then decided to ignore most of her findings. It has taken a judicial review to get the Government to finally accept responsibility. Labour Ministers then kicked the issue into the long grass by appointing a retired judge, who won’t report until after the General Election.”

Conservatives have made a firm pledge to compensate Equitable Life policyholders and dependents with no means testing, and Nicky has signed the EMAG pledge as a sign of this commitment. The pledge reads:

“I pledge to the voters of this constituency that if I am elected to Parliament at the next general election, I will support and vote for proper compensation for victims of the Equitable Life scandal and I will support and vote to set up a swift, simple, transparent and fair payment scheme – independent of government – as recommended by the Parliamentary Ombudsman.”
