On Sunday 18 July, Radio Kaliningrad (me and Ger Lynch) will be playing at Whelan's on Wexford Street. It's the goodbye party for the Cycle of America 2010 - with proceeds going to the Irish Cancer Society and Livestrong.

Also playing will be Brazen Lungs and Chayka.

Things will kick off at 8pm. Admission is €7. Further details on Facebook.

Last night was back at Sin É for the regular Wednesday Dublin Beat Club. Atmosphere was fairly relaxed so I took the opportunity to try out a couple of things: did this medley/combo/segue thing with an old track of mine 'tiburón' and Bruce Springsteen's 'I'm on Fire', tried out brand new song 'first light' and I also played 'pinafore' (the cheesy poppy last track on inaccurate charm) for the first time ever. Fun fun!

This one’s tentatively titled ‘first light’ and is more downbeat, less aggressive than the last one.

The last time I’d written a song by myself was in October last year, when I was still in Japan. Since coming home, I’ve been doing a fair bit of collaborating, remixing and playing live - but I’d been getting a little worried about the lack of new stuff of my own.

Several times I told myself I was going to sit down and write something - anything. But it never happened. And the longer it went on, the more difficult it seemed to get.

But today… I wrote a song!

It’s far from the best thing I’ve written: the lyrics are messy; it probably needs a vocal part on the bridge part - or a better bridge altogether; and if I’m to keep it, I obviously need to record it properly.

But I wrote something. Finally.

Hopefully, this will lead to more.

I wrote and demoed 'Hard to Please' back in July of last year.

Since then, it has become a bit of a favourite. It gets a great response live (I've played it at almost every gig I've done since). And the "finished" version was pretty much unanimously singled out as the standout track on the people person album.

So, I figured I upload the multitracks for people to remix/use/sample/etc.

Le Cirk!

Had a fun, enjoyable and interesting time tonight at Le Cirk at the Spilt Gin Theatre Company's fundraiser for Andy Warhol's Nothing Special.

Headlining the evening was Alligator Chorus, who played their first and possibly last gig with their new full, four-person lineup [three of the four were three of the four members of At Speed...]. They were great. Really hope to see some new iteration of the band soon.

As for me, first up, I played a short, improvised set. It was the first time I'd played an electric guitar on stage in quite a while. It felt... odd. I really seem to have this whole acoustic thing going on now. My 16-year-old self would be horrified! But yeah, I played:

After that, Ger Lynch and I played our first ever set with our new guitar+keyboards Handsome-Furs-without-the-marriage set up. It was exciting - and a little nerve-wracking. Our soundcheck was quite messy due to the amount of gear and gadgetry we brought along, but the performance itself went pretty well. I was happy with it. Ger was, too. And I think the audience was not at all unhappy - so, win win win!

Played a short, but fun (for me at least!) set at Sin É last night. Did four songs [setlist below].

Colm Prunty also played, finishing his set with a great cover of Jeff Buckley's cover of '(A) Satisfied Mind'.

There were some other really good performances too, but I think everyone's favourite was when Jason and Tom from Beatnik Turtle came out and played a fast and furious (actually, it wasn't furious at all... more like fast and friendly) set of songs about beer, drugs, work ("Boo!"), sandwiches, beer again ("Well, it's about a girl, described using beer metaphors..."), before encoring with 'I Think You Think I Think You Don't Like Me'. Absolutely fantastic! Looking forward to see them play more and more in the coming months.

On Tuesday next week (13 April), Ger Lynch and I will be playing at Le Cirk in Dublin, supporting Alligator Chorus (of which Ger so happens to be a member). Event details on Facebook. Hope to see yis there!

Fire at Sea in an apartment

On 2 March, Sarah Daly and I got together to play music together at Sarah's apartment. Or should I say now former apartment - she moved to Scotland just a few days later.

Despite our multiple collaborations, this was only the second time we'd ever played together in person - and, what with the migration, will be the last for a while :(
