Stop figuring it out.

It took me a long time to realize this, but hey, some lessons take a little longer, right?

And besides, if you don’t learn a lesson, the Universe has a way of sending it to you again and again, until you do.

In my case, it was to stop figuring it out.

Focusing on figuring-it-out is like looking for red cars

Like many of you, I used to try to figure-things-out before moving forward.

“What should I say?”

“What should I do?”

I would put endless hours of energy into figuring it out…to no avail.

I couldn’t understand why I still had doubts. What was I still uncertain of what to do, when I was working so hard to ‘figure-it-out?’

Of course, I eventually realized I was answering my own question.

I had doubts and was uncertain, and focusing on that. That’s what ‘figuring it out’ means - it’s another way of saying “I’m not sure.”

Now, you’ve heard that ‘what you focus on expands in your awareness.‘

Remember the red car exercise? The more you focus on red cars, the more of them you’ll see.

Well, when you focus on ‘figuring-it-out’, instead of red cars, you’re focusing on ‘doubt and uncertainty.’ And guess what, you see more of that everywhere you look.

The Big Shift

If you want to end your doubt and uncertainty, you must make the big shift to…working-it-out.

Working-it-out means you’re following a process of do-correct-continue. You’re dedicated to action. Nothing happens until something moves. When you’re figuring-it-out, you’re stagnant. When you’re working-it-out, you’re in motion and moving forward.

What are you trying to Figure Out?

Make a list of the things you’re trying to figure out:

What you’re unique message is…

Who you’re ideal client is…

How to actually like marketing…

How to get out there and make a difference…

Once you’ve made your list. List one action you can take to move you in that direction. Just one. And then take that step. Once you’re done. Take another.

Congratulations! You’re working it out…and you’ve made the shift!

Empowering Results!

Asking for help can be a very tough thing to do. It brings up adequacy issues; “I should know how to…” It can bring up trust issues; “How do I know if I can trust them to…” It can bring up control issues; “I can do it myself…”

While I can’t solve these issues in this week’s Q&A, I can provide some small steps – tools – that can help ease your burden and make life a little easier.

Last week’s article on Tools for Success created even more questions. So, I thought I’d expand more during this week’s Q&A on other tools I use in my day-to-day and weekly activities.

Evernote

Evernote is indispensable for me to keep track of information. You know, those notes, ideas, thoughts – everything. I used to carry around journals everywhere to take notes and record thoughts. But, searching through old journals, or entries in the existing journal was not very practical…so, I didn’t do it.

Enter Evernote which allows me to add ‘tags’ or categories. Provides searchable platform. I can take notes on any device and all my notes synchronize. I like the email feature. When you sign up, you get an email that you can send notes, from email, right into your Evernote account.

Best of all, Evernote is free…I like free tools. Click here to learn more.

Screenflow

Do you see all those video sales letters and other recorded presentations? They’re using Screenflow (Mac) or Camtasia (PC). It’s the easiest way to record a Keynote (Mac) or PowerPoint (PC) presentation on your computer while you talk into a microphone. Technology is shifting what you outsource and what you can do quicker, and less expensive on your own.

Screenflow is great because it records the whole screen. You can narrate while you flip through the slides, or show things on your computer. And then you can animate or accentuate parts of your screen. With Screenflow, you’ll become a presentation master in a very short period of time. Click here to learn more.

OptimizePress

I am grateful daily for OptimizePress. It’s a WordPress “theme” that was built by marketers. And since you’re a marketer (we all are), you’ll appreciate how easy OptimizePress makes setting up squeeze pages, sales pages, blog pages, membership site pages.

It’s as easy as choosing a template and filling in the blanks. I especially like the dozens of built in graphics they provide to make your page look incredibly professional..without the cost. If you’re online, you must use WordPress…and add OptimizePress as your theme. Click here to learn more.

Box Shot King

You’ve seen all those “product pictures” on sales letters, right? It looks like a professional photographer took pictures of the person’s product on a white background. Perhaps you thought “How can I get my product to look like that?”

Not to worry, because Box Shot King makes it possible to create one of those awesome 3D graphics for your product – In Under 2 Minutes – It’s crazy what technology has allowed us to do. The last time I paid a designer for something like this, it cost hundreds of dollars. Now, I can create a product picture in under 2 minutes. And if I don’t like it, I can edit in over and over again. Maybe I’ll spend up to 10 minutes to get it right. Wow. Click here or take the Box Shot Challenge below.

1Password

If you’re still using easy-to-remember passwords. Or worse, perhaps you’re using one password for everything. Technology makes it so easy to keep track of your passwords. As I write this, I have 729 different VERY STRONG passwords for various accounts. And the best part? I don’t know any of them.

With 1Password, all I have to do is remember “one password” that unlocks the software. And then it auto-fills the username and password of sites I visit. It also stores different addresses, credit cards, frequent flyer accounts, website logins and all other information you want to keep secured.

So, stop using a word processing document titled “passwords” and enter the 21st century with 1Password. You’ll thank me. Click here to learn more.

Enjoy the weekend!

Empowering Results!

There is a language of success. And developing a success mindset includes how you speak (and think). I hear it daily in my head, with my partners and coaches and I hear it when I listen to mentors and friends.

My favorite show on TV is “Shark Tank” because it satisfies the “edu-tainment” criteria. It is both; entertaining and educational.

For an hour, I get entertained by the personalities and business concepts. And, I also get to hear how Billionaires and mega-multi-millionaires think about money.

And just like there’s a language of success, there’s a language of failure. It’s the victim who blames, justifies or makes excuses as to ‘why they can’t.’

When I’m speaking to someone, I pay attention to their language. Within minutes, I know a great deal about the person by how they speak. What words do they use. Do they take responsibility; “I feel…” or “I didn’t follow through…..” Or, are they more of the blamer; “He didn’t do this….” or “I would have but she called and interrupted me…”

And then there’s the phrase that signals, what I call, the kiss-of-death. I call it that because it signals the kiss-of-death of any dream they may have. I can guarantee if they use this expression, they’re struggling.

What is it?

“I Know That.”

I know that. One of the definitions of ‘know’ is to be absolutely certain about something. You can’t argue with a closed mind, and when someone is absolutely certain about how to do something – yet not getting the results they want or expect – you have a losing proposition.

But, you might be thinking, there are many things I know. Sure, but are you doing them? Do you have the results you want?

I recognize you might use these words because you’re feeling scared or insecure. Maybe you don’t want people to realize you don’t know it all. But far from conveying that image, it conveys the very image you’re concerned about. Besides, how do you feel when someone responds; “I don’t know, but I’ll get back to you on that?” Chances are you trust them a little more.

When I hear the words; “I know that” or a message of certainty, I immediately think of that person as scared and too insecure to be honest. If you knew it, you’d do it.

For me, I like to assume everything I know is wrong. I found this easier to develop a mindset of success. That way, I don’t have to worry about being right because everything I know is wrong, and I’m not worried about someone pointing that out.

And then I take action. If it works, I do more of it, if it doesn’t, I stop doing it. It’s not about me, it’s about results.

Sometimes I have those “I know that” thoughts. Or I hear someone say it to me (or imply certainty). My natural response is “Perhaps.” This reminds me that, it may be true, it may not be, we’ll see. And then I can go research, test or otherwise experiment to see if it is indeed true.

Do yourself a favor, and strengthen your success mindset, by avoiding the killer phrase of “I know that.” And be open to being wrong. Besides, the more wrong you are, quicker, the faster success comes.

You might want to re-read that last sentence a couple times…unless you already know that.

Empowering Results.

“If you don’t need it, you don’t get it,” she said.

Have you heard similar messages growing up?

It’s part of what I consider the poverty mentality. The poverty mentality is the belief that you don’t deserve to have any more than you need.

Poverty Mindset. Got one?

It may be an intentional choice because of religious beliefs. Or it may come from a belief about deservedness and your own lack of self worth.

It’s when you earn/get/acquire just enough to get by. And it feels crappy.

Too Much Abundance

The poverty mentality leads you to consider anything ‘extra’ as too much.

You may recognize the poverty mentality;

You tend to act in ways to repel wealth and abundance

If you inherit or come into some money, you’ll quickly find ways to get rid of it

You don’t appreciate or recognize your own value

You focus on cost, not value

You feel guilty if you get ‘too much’

And if you’re struggling to get by, month after month, there’s a good chance you’re wrestling with the poverty mentality.

Don’t Get Hung Up

Don’t worry about what caused it. Or what may have happened growing up for you to end up with a poverty mentality. Just focus on what mindset you do want.

Do you want the abundance mindset that says;

I recognize there’s enough for everyone

I have no limits to the wealth and abundance I’m attracting

I love the idea of being rich and happy

It excites me to give large amounts of money to worthy causes

There is no right or wrong regarding your mindset. You may take a vow of poverty and be completely unhappy.

But, you may have had the poverty mentality imposed on you, without realizing it, and have been struggling a long time to succeed, without realizing that was holding you back.

The first step is to recognize whether you have the poverty mindset or not.

Next, ask yourself if it serves you. Does it move you closer to the life you want, or farther?

If you want to shift to a mindset of abundance, start taking little steps to recognize and appreciate value. A little bit each day, adds up to a lot very quickly. And you deserve a lot.

Empowering Results!

Would you like to know when my ‘big shift’ occurred? Would you like to make a similar shift and see results start showing up quicker?

You see, when I started out, I thought the way to get business was to ‘convince’ people to buy what I had to offer, whether they needed it or not. I was too pushy, and you could argue, desperate.

That resulted in pushing potential customers away. I was feeling frustrated. I remember one person looking at me and saying; “you’re rude.”

But, I thought that’s how I was supposed to do it. I was conditioned by peers, movies and other media sources that sales was about being pushy and convincing people to buy something they don’t really need.

I decided, I better go find out on my own and do my own research.

So, I started reading a lot of books on sales and marketing. I followed great copywriters like Joe Sugarman and Dan Kennedy.

I joined the email lists of people I respected like; Mark Joyner, Joe Vitale and others.

And I went to seminars to watch speakers like; Tony Robbins, T. Harv Eker and others.

Eventually I would work with many of these people, but first I had to develop my marketing mindset.

You’ve heard of a success mindset, but perhaps not a marketing mindset.

I define a marketing mindset as the ability to consider everything you do in the context of promoting and selling your products and services.

There’s more to that than you may think.

In order to have an empowering marketing mindset, you have to;

Believe in the value of what you’re offering

Communicate it’s value in a compelling way

Promote your product or service consistently

Ask prospects for the sale

Now, you may recognize a marketing mindset as a little harder than you realize.

As a matter of fact, most people are challenged by developing a marketing mindset because the above four bullets brings up a lot of their ‘stuff and story.’

But, it’s what separates successful people from unsuccessful people. Marketing. It’s not a dirty word – but can be when done in my early years.

It is actually the most important part of your day. It’s the most considerate thing you can do for your prospects, and most effective thing you can do for your business.

When you:

Understand your customers wants

Create a product to satisfy those wants

Communicate the value of your product

Promote your product

Ask for the sale

When you can do the above, you will have tremendous success. As long as you continue to avoid it, you will struggle. That’s the biggest lesson I learned about succeeding.

It doesn’t work to stay in your office and ‘figure it out.’ What works is putting yourself out there, taking the risks, listening to the feedback, and correcting course.

Everything else is just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Empowering Results!

On Fridays, I like to answer questions from you. Usually there’s a theme to the week and this week is no exception. I received a lot of questions about what success tools I use.

I call them success tools for the simple reason is they make my life easier as it relates to my business. Here is the basic suite of tools. Obviously, I use many tools, based on the area I’m working on, but these are my day-to-day staples.

Cloud backup = peace of mind

PC or Mac

I use Mac because as a small business owner, I could no longer afford the hours each month (sometimes each week) I was spending dealing with my computer, rebooting, updating and numerous other challenges which took my time away from ‘promoting or performing.’

This change had one of the biggest impacts on my ability to focus and spend quality time doing effective work. I have since persuaded dozens of people to make the switch – even die-hard, stubborn PC owners – and everyone of them had similar experiences. And I must add, starting really enjoying computing.

Second Monitor

The next big shift for me was buying a second monitor. I have a MacBookPro with a 15″ screen, which is nice, but I really wasn’t expecting the HUGE increase in my productivity having a second monitor. I bought a 21″ from Dell and set it up next to the MacBookPro. Wow, it truly is awesome to have all that space to work with.

Outlook or…

In the last year or so, Outlook has been added to the Office for Mac suite. But I don’t use it. I used to love Outlook on my PC, but there were some things missing. I didn’t want to use separate software for tracking leads, opportunities and projects, so I found Daylite and have been very happy since. They don’t have a version for PC, but if you are on a Mac, this program rocks. And for those inclined toward the cloud, you can use a server version.

Mail

Since I have many different email accounts, I use Apple’s mail client. It brings everything into one inbox and allows me to quickly sort, file or delete mail. My email inbox is empty every night. I recognize that gmail and other services allow you to keep your email on the cloud. And I still do that by using imap instead of pop when it comes to setting up, but I like to know there’s a copy of certain emails on my physical computer. I don’t fully trust ‘the cloud’ for my backups.

Backups

If you don’t back up your computer – PLEASE DO SO THIS WEEKEND! Imagine coming to the office Monday, pushing the power/on button on your computer…and nothing happening. What would you do? I recommend doing hourly backups locally. The Mac has Time Machine, so once you set it, you can forget it. Windows has a scheduled backup service as well.

And I recommend a virtual or cloud-based service like Crashplan. I’ve been very happy with them. What this does is back up my computer, over-the-cloud. Why? Because if my house burns down (when me and the family are out of it), I would lose any local backups. Crashplan can overnight a complete copy of my computer files and I’d be ready to install it on another computer.

So, those are some of the basic tools I use on my computer. What do you use? What do you like? What do you need help with?

Would you like to be happier? It’s not a trick question. Would you like to be happier and have more success in your life?

Would you like a success mindset? You know, where you feel successful. Where things happen and you feel good about them.

You’ve met those people. Perhaps they annoyed you.

They used to annoy me, hearing them talk about all the good that could come out of something that, to me, seemed horrible.

Whether losing money, losing a relationship or losing a client – they seemed to find the positive in everything. It drove me crazy.

I mean, seriously, didn’t they ever get upset or depressed?

I soon realized I didn’t dislike their behavior. Instead, I wanted to be able to think like they did.

Having the right mindset for success is crucial. I found out early that if I wanted to succeed, I had to have beliefs that allowed me to.

I couldn’t go crying; “Oh why did this happen to me?” Something I may have been guilty of years ago when my carefully enacted plan – did not go as planned.

But how to make the shift?

That was the problem I had to deal with because shitty things did happen. I didn’t like certain things.

Well, that was the problem right there..saying bad things happen. I was already judging something to be good or bad, without knowing the full picture.

What do I mean?

Have you ever cried when a relationship has ended? Yes, me too.

BUT…

After a little time, have you ever (never?) looked back and said “Thank God that relationship ended?”

That’s the mindset I’m talking about.

I’ve gotten upset over; failed relationships, business deals gone bad, losing customers and numerous other ‘hardships.’ Yet, over time, I can see the reasons why it was a good thing.

And that is a part of life, these ‘things’ happen…and will continue to happen.

They are neither good or bad. They just are.

I came across a quote; “Nothing has meaning except the meaning I give it.“

Wow, that woke me up. Seriously?

I thought about this, and couldn’t poke holes in it. It’s a solid quote if I really take life on life’s terms. People are born, they die. Relationships start, and most end. Customers come, and customers go.

There’s a natural cycle to things. Some body die earlier than others. Some customers stick around longer than others. Friends seem to be with you for a; reason, season or lifetime.

Stuff happens. That’s life. What meaning you (or I) assign to it (Good, bad, happy, tragic) is entirely up to me.

I decided that everything that happens in my life serves me and helps me grow. That started out as a mantra. But now, I believe it so deeply in my bones that when something ‘unexpected’ happens, I just lean back into it and trust.

Ultimately, something happens, usually outside my control. But, I can control how I interpret it. I can be neutral and zen-like, or get depressed/angry/sad – or I can believe it will serve me and help me grow.

What kind of mindset are you developing? What kind do you want to develop?

It’s up to you…it always is.

Empowering Results!

Can I show you an easier way?

Would it be okay if I helped speed up your journey to where you want to go?

Isn’t that what you’re looking for? A shortcut. A way to get from here to there much quicker.

Perhaps you feel like you’ve wasted years and are playing catch-up. Or maybe, your financial situation is difficult and you need to do something fast.

Perhaps you’re just impatient and want to succeed – yesterday!

Regardless, if I can help you get there quicker than you could on your own, what’s that worth to you?

And if you think about it, I’m talking about time. Saving YOUR time.

Now, what’s that worth?

That’s the mindset you should start adopting with your clients.

You’re a facilitator.

Whether you’re a coach, consultant, attorney, accountant or other independent professional, your job is to facilitate success for your client, quicker than they could on their own.

You see, the root of the word ‘facilitate’ means ‘to make easy.’

When you recognize your job is to make it easier for someone, you can adapt a mindset of a solutions provider.

Just like my role is to make it easier for you to take the actions necessary to get you to succeed. I help people get out of their own way, tame the negative thoughts enough to take the actions that will radically transform their lives.

That’s how I make your life easier.

And, as a result, you treat yourself better, get more effective and ultimately, feel better about yourself.

That’s why people buy my products and services. I make it easier for them.

What About You?

Is this how you talk to your prospects? Do you address ways you make it easier for them? Or do you say “I’m a coach (coach, lawyer, chiropractor, etc)” Which has nothing to do with making it easier for them.

What about your clients? Do you make it easy to do business with you? Or do you make them jump through hoops just to contact you?

What about when they start working with you? Do they have to fill out a bunch of forms?

You’re a facilitator. Your job is to make it easier for… start facilitating.

Look for ways you can communicate HOW you make it easier for your ideal client

Adjust presentations (and pitches) to be say how you make their lives easier

Change language on your websites to make it easy to understand; what you do, why I should care, how you make my life easier, and what I should do next

Review your client-intake-process and make it as easy as nodding ones head

Look at how you can make it easier….for you!

Now that you realize what “facilitation” means, you have no excuse but to go out there and make things easier for; your prospects, your clients…and especially yourself.

Empowering Results (and making your life easier!)

Would you like to immediately accelerate your results? No, I’m not talking about some “success shortcut” that will fix everything overnight.

Unless of course, you can adapt that quickly.

It’s something I have to remind myself of from time-to-time.

Now, before I share it with you.

Do it yourself? It's one of your Highest Income Producing Activities

What kind of person are you?

Are you the kind that focuses on just a few tasks that you know are your Highest Income Producing Activities?

Or, are you the DIY’er – or Do-It-Yourself’er? You know, the person doing all the web work, graphics, business card design, accounting and everything else in your business?

If the second person sounds more like you, let me guess and say, you’re struggling right?

I can relate. It’s tempting to do everything myself. I find the internet, business and technology endlessly fascinating.

I could spend hours learning about hosting, DNS and IP addresses. Just like I could spend hours learning about copywriting, video sales letters and many other forms of communicating my message.

But, I have to draw the line if I want to be successful.

I have to understand – and so do you – what my Highest Income Producing Activities are (and are not). And then I have to focus on performing them.

Remember, there are only two areas you should be focusing on in your business. Performing and Promoting. Everything else should fall aside.

I don’t mean don’t do them. Just delegate them to someone who’s job is ‘performing’ them.

Managing the complexities of a website is not most people’s skill. But some charge money for this. It’s what they ‘perform’ for money. Send it their way, they know a lot more about it then you do.

If you’re a coach; your core activities are coaching, speaking, creating product, networking, writing articles, making videos and other promotional activities. The rest needs to go.

I get tempted to do more than I care to admit. But when I ‘ask for help’ outside of my areas, my life gets infinitely easier.

About mid-morning, I send an email updating or reviewing others work – and then I get back to what I do best, my Highest Income Producing Activities.

Give it a try.

Look at your ‘to do’ list and then ask; “Does this involve performing or promoting my business?”

If the answer is NO, go to elance.com, odesk, craigslist.org or numerous other sites and give it to someone whose job it is to perform that work. Heck, you might even find someone to do it for five dollars.

And you’ll see more and more success start showing up in your life.

Give it a try – your inbox could use a little relief.

Empowering Results!

“I will call you tomorrow!” She told me. And I waited. And waited.

She was ‘selling’ me on her services – graphics – and I was open to hearing her.

But no call, email or smoke signal ever followed those comments. It’s been weeks and I’ve since given the work ( and my money) to someone else.

Incidentally, the person I hired to do the work was quite different. I sent her an email asking about her services.

I received a response within the hour. A phone call within two hours and a follow up phone call the next day – making sure I’d received the previous attempts.

Do you see it?

The first woman might have as good or better graphic artist. She might have earned repeat business from me and had another source of revenue for years to come.

But she couldn’t do that one thing. The one thing that is an instant disqualifier to me.

She didn’t do what she said.

It was that I needed a response within minutes. It’s that she told me something, and didn’t do it.

So, I didn’t even have the chance to tell her about the work. She lost her opportunity, and more important, she lost my trust – and little chance for future work.

There are no little commitments.

Perhaps you think I’m being tough on her. Besides, you might think, it was just about a phone call, it wasn’t something ‘really important.’

“Crap!” I say.

There are no little commitments. You either have a habit of doing what you say, or you don’t. Either it’s important to you, or it’s incidental conversation.

You see, what I have learned is that your word matters – no matter how big or small you think something is – your word is on the line.

And more importantly, I learned that when I don’t follow through on my word, I lose trust with myself – and that’s worse. It affects self-esteem and my belief in my own abilities.

I’m very careful with my language so I remain very clear. I use ‘qualifiers’ most of the time. I am very careful not to make too many commitments, because when I commit, I follow through.

So, saying “I’ll call you tomorrow” is no different than saying “I promise.” Now, had she said, “I’m booked solid tomorrow, but I’ll do my best to call you. If I don’t, when is another good time to call?”

That would have been very different.

But she didn’t. She lost my trust. She lost my business.

No matter how big or small. Do what you say you’re going to do. Be careful with your language. Don’t over commit.

Once you have a few successful commitments, you’ll start seeing your self-esteem skyrocket. And your business? It will take off. When people know they can count on you. Good things start flowing your way.

Empowering Results!

When I was first starting out on my own, I was sure what I wanted to do. One of the challenges with being an independent professional, small business owner and/or coach, is there are so many choices.

In a “Job,” you simply do what you were hired to do. On your own, you have a lot of different things to do.

I felt unfocused and unsure of what to do next.

So, after studying the most successful people, and seeing what worked for me in the past, I created the Let Your Millionaire Out Success System to help me with the various challenges.

What do I do today?

How do I get focused?

How to handle all the conflicting success information out there

What am I truly passionate about?

What is my purpose?

How do I deal with my negative thoughts?

How do I make money from the above?

Those were just some of my questions, so I created a system to guide me, step-by-step, to keep me moving forward.

Once I started down this path, the next question I had was; “How do I get paying clients as a coach?”

From that question, I developed the Full Practice Program to help coaches (Me at the time) follow a 12-week process to get more clients.

That process evolved into “How do I coach more people – without having to coach more people?” In other words, how do I leverage myself, to help more people, and not have to directly coach them. To allow them to go at their own pace and learn advanced strategies to help more people, over and over again, without being directly involved.

That’s where the “Putting Yourself Out There Formula” came about. To share with you, the process I’ve used to go bigger, be more successful. Which to me means earning more money, for the same amount of work.

Depending where you are, one of these programs is right for you. Check them out to see.

Empowering Results!

If I could persuade you to do one thing. If I could get you to do it today. I know it could make a difference in your life.

And it doesn’t cost anything.

If I could get you to do one thing...

It’s something that gets easier the more you do it. Something that becomes enjoyable quickly.

Did I mention it doesn’t cost anything?

Look, I understand you may be struggling.

I understand you may be frustrated and trying to ‘figure-it-out.’

I recognize you want everything perfect before telling others about what you do.

But, here’s the thing. That time never comes. It’s a bunch of lies you’re ego’s telling you to keep you safe.

You’re right where you’re supposed to be.

Your product or service is perfect just the way it is – or isn’t.

What’s important is to get out there today and share with others how you can help them.

I don’t care if you’re elevator pitch sucks.

I don’t care if you don’t know what to say.

The best way to ‘figure-it-out’ is to stop trying to figure-it-out and instead, work it out.

Working it out looks like walking into a coffee shop, networking event or office building and talking. Listening to what is being asked and responding to the best of your ability, as real as possible.

Pay attention to what works, what doesn’t and make adjustments.

It’s that simple. But, you have to be willing to be ‘imperfect.’ Willing to not know it all.

Basically, you have to be willing.

And since I know you’re way more valuable than perhaps you give yourself credit for. I know you’re perfect right now.

Set aside all the planning, figuring and organizing – grab your keys and head out.

It’s time you put yourself out thereand share more of you with the world…we’re waiting!

I was driving in the car with two of my kids when it happened.

Listening to the person on the phone trying to ‘figure-it-all.’ It was painful. She was worried about every word. Not sure what to say, yet wanting to say so much.

That’s when it happened.

Brain Dump

“Look,” I said, “Just open an email, puke on the page, and send it to me!”

I don’t know who laughed louder, my client, or my kids in the car. I thought they were going to pee their pants they laughed so hard…and they didn’t even know what I was talking about.

My client, in a blinding flash of the obvious (BFOTO), also laughed deep down from her belly.

And then it happened again. Two days later. The same daughter who almost peed in the car, was sitting at the table trying to write an essay.

She’s testing for her 2nd degree black belt in TaeKwonDo and has to write several pages of what a black belt means to her.

I looked at her with the same grin from the other day and encouraged her to ‘puke on the page.’

By now, you might be wondering what the hell I’m talking about?

Have you ever been ‘stuck?’

You know, feeling like there’s something inside that has to come out – and no, not physically. But, something you want to say, express or otherwise get out.

It could be a product idea, book or emotions you want to share with an intimate. But, somehow it just seems to get stuck and you have a hard time getting it out.

Perhaps it’s worry about getting it perfect.

Maybe you’re scared of being bullied or criticized.

Or maybe you just can’t find the words.

Whatever it is, is stuck, and you’d feel a whole lot better releasing it.

Puke It Out

Years ago I listened to legendary copywriter Joe Sugarman talk about his craft. Of the 1,000 people in the room, Joe said that when it comes to 1st drafts, he’s probably the worst in the room.

He doesn’t care about the 1st draft. As he shared, he makes his money with all the subsequent drafts.

You see, the first draft for most people is the hardest to write – or say. It’s that desire to make it all perfect before saying, or writing, a word.

In relationship, this can minimize any hurt to the other person – but if kept inside too long, ends up hurting you too much. Get it out.

In business, holding back keeps you from becoming prolific. It keeps you from really putting yourself out there in a way that people understand, and want to support.

The 1st draft is exactly that, the 1st draft. Get it out, and then revise until it resonates with you.

If you hold it in too long, you may get sick and actually puke. Don’t do that, just open a document and start puking on the page.

And then later, you can clean up the mess you made.

Empowering Results (sometimes in strange ways)

Would you like to focus better? How would it feel to face the day knowing exactly what you want to get done?

I share the story of how I used to read five books at a time and never finish any of them. It got so frustrating that I finally threw all the books to the ground – and eventually put them back into the bookcase. This was before the Kindle, iBooks and other ebooks.

Obviously reading so many books at once wasn’t working. What were my options?

I could read four, instead of five? But, that didn’t seem like much of a change.

No, I needed something different. So, I decided to read just one book.

I look at the books and decided, unscientifically which one I wanted to read next. I pulled it out of the bookshelf and started reading it.

A funny thing happened.

I finished the book within a week or two.

And then I pulled the next book out, and finished that book in a week or two.

In a month, I had read more books than when I was reading five books at a time, for six months.

I was hooked. How else could I apply this to my life?

In business, I have five (or more) projects going on at any one time. I realized all were taking forever to accomplish. Why not apply the same lesson.

So, I took one project and worked on just that one until it was complete. And then the next, and the next.

Before I knew it, I was becoming much more prolific in my activities. And feeling a whole lot better about my self.

Your Instant Focus Technique

Write out your list of “To Dos.”

Look them over (you can prioritize if you like)

Pick the ‘next-right-one’ to work on

Not sure? Guess. If your intuition (gut) doesn’t guide you, then there is no wrong one to start with.

But Start!

That’s the key. Pick one thing and discipline yourself to work on just that one until it’s complete. Create time in your schedule to complete it, and protect them time like your life depends on it. Because it does.

When you’ve mastered this. Rinse and repeat.

What’s the ‘next-right-thing’ for you?

Empowering Results!

Last week I wrote an article about Making Mondays Matter. It was a good article filled with helpful tips about making Mondays much more enjoyable. And I meant it.

But, let’s face it. Sometimes Mondays suck. Today is one of those days.

Not enough sleep, too much on my mind and the desire to take the day off.

It’s tempting to crawl back into bed and watch movies all day. It certainly sounds more enjoyable than some of the things I’m looking to get done today.

David Finishing the Ironman One Step at a Time

Why do I persist?

Because I’m on a mission. There I things I want to do and achieve…today and this year. And I know that the most important time to push-through is when I’m feeling like I am today.

In my life, when I’ve pushed through the discomfort and kept moving forward, good things happened.

- When trying out for Special Forces, the test sucked. I was tired, sweaty, covered in sand (for hours) and carrying a lot of weight on my back. All day long, I could have sat down and given up. Instead, I pushed through the discomfort and enjoyed a successful 8-year career in one of the most elite military units in the world.

- When building my first multi-million dollar business, the first year sucked. Working, working and working with little to show for it…but I kept moving forward and had a huge breakthrough.

- Running an Ironman Triathlon (swim 2.4 miles, bike 112, run 26.2 miles) has moments of sheer unpleasantness. Every muscle in my body screams with pain, fatigue sets in and I want to lay down and go to sleep. But, I wanted to be an Ironman Finisher – and I kept moving forward, one step at a time, and finished 4 Ironman triathlons.

What the above have in common is strong motivation for a desired outcome. None of the above were ‘shoulds’, ‘have tos’ or ‘need tos’. They were all things I very much wanted to do.

And so today, I remind myself of what I want (to empower 1 million people by 2020) and I keep moving forward. It helps me remember why I’m doing what I’m doing…and to keep moving forward.

Sometimes what is required is just to put one foot in front of the other. Sometimes that’s all I have bandwidth for.

And I know, if I keep doing that, I’ll reach my desired outcome.

Empowering Results!

David

Each week I get lots of questions. Some emailed, some asked on the phone by clients, and some when I’m out and about meeting with others.

I try to summarize the theme of the week and answer that specific scenario.

This week centered around boundaries and the importance of ending your day.

Scope Creep (Photo credit: C_Knaus)

And I must confess, over the years, I’ve gone from ‘what are boundaries’ to protecting them with my life.

Simply stated, a boundary is a dividing line. It’s what separates one area from another.

When I was first starting in the business world, I didn’t know what a boundary was. For example, I didn’t know when the work day started, or where it ended.

I didn’t know where my responsibility ended with a customer and theirs began. I didn’t know the employers role (and not) and my role (and not).

All this lead to a great deal of stress, confusion and eventual conflict.

With customers, I experienced early on, the term ‘scope creep.’ This is when you’re hired to perform one service, only to find the customer slowing adding to your list – without adding to your fee.

If not addressed, this creates false expectations by the customer, and builds resentment in you. It can turn ugly quickly.

It’s why I spend the most time now specifying, in detail, the scope of services, and roles and responsibilities when I start working with companies. I want us all to be clear about who’s doing what.

This leads to success.

In your day-to-day life, you have many boundaries to protect. One of the most important, especially if you have a family or significant other, is the boundary between business and personal.

Last night was ‘date night’ with my wife. We decided on staying in and having dinner and a movie. Before the date, I ‘ended my work day.’ I did this with my daily success ritual, and then transitioned emotionally to personal mode.

Can you imagine if I didn’t? Imagine me showing up for our date with my iphone or iPad or iLaptop? And my wife having to compete for my attention during the date?

My wife would not have tolerated that for long – nor should she – and I’d have more issues than just work to deal with.

So, whether you’re using the Let Your Millionaire Out Success System, or following your own daily success ritual, be sure to set boundaries around your day when it comes to work.

“When does the work day start?”

And more importantly…

“When does the work day end?”

And when it ends, bring the same amount of intensity and drive to your recreation, as you do your work.

Enjoy the weekend!

David

Do you want to let your millionaire out? It seems like such an easy question – at first. Sure, you’re thinking, I want to let my millionaire out, that would be great.

Who doesn’t want more in their life. More money, time, and money. You’d be crazy not to, right?

And it’s about even more than that.

To me, letting my millionaire out is about living to my fullest potential. About realizing goals and living beyond my comfort zone. Of striving beyond the level I’ve been performing at.

But there’s a drawback to letting your millionaire out.

It’s hard to turn back.

You get a taste of the ‘edge’ of your comfort zone, and it’s one part exhilarating, and one part fear. You’re feeling more powerful than ever because you’ve done and achieved more than you ever have before.

But you’re also on the edge of your comfort zone which is an invitation to your ‘stuff’ to come visit you and confront it.

You know what I mean. You get excited about something – it could be returning from a seminar – and you start the next day motivated to change things.

But, pretty soon your ‘stuff’ starts coming up; Am I good enough? Smart enough? Do you really have what-it-takes? And what if I fail? That kind of stuff comes up.

But that’s natural. Success is found when you push through that wall of crap and keep moving forward.

Failure is letting it derail you.

One thing I’ve noticed is that trying to push through that wall alone is very difficult. Using your mind to solve a problem in your mind doesn’t seem to make sense. It’s like enlisting an enemy to help you.

I’ve learned to pick up the phone and talk to a friend when I need to push through. I can share my intention and be held accountable. I can be reminded of my successes. Or I can just be told to keep going and call him back tomorrow.

The point being is achieving your great dreams and goals, living to your full potential and feeling like you’ve done your best, in each moment – all of that – takes the help and support of other like-minded people.

To let your millionaire out requires help. All you have to do is ask.

And remember, you’re not alone.

Empowering Results!

Do you know the power of the Pareto Principle? Have you really experienced the leverage, and results, that come from focusing on your vital few activities?

The Pareto Principle, named after Vilfredo Pareto, who observed that 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. Or flipped around, 80% of your activities may only be producing 20% of your results.

For many this is true. Are you one of them?

The other day I wanted some programming done on one of my sites. I could have spent a few hours and figured it out. But, programming is not one of my core competencies, nor is it one of my highest income producing activities.

So, I put out a bid to get the programming done. Within one hour, I had 50 responses on odesk. If you haven’t used sites like odesk, or even fiverr – you’re missing something great.

With a simple email, you can free up your time to let someone else do what they do best, so you can get back to what you do best.

Do you really need to learn how to program, make graphics or create brochures? Probably not.

What would make Pareto Proud is for you to list your top 5 Highest Income Producing Activities and do everything you can to stay focused on them throughout your day. Outsource the rest.

And the sites above, and other tools like Dropbox make outsourcing and collaboration even easier. No more paying a service to transfer big files. You can just drag a big file (i.e. photo) into your dropbox folder and send the link to your graphics person.

It is pretty amazing how you can manage people and resources across the world while sitting in a coffee shop in your city.

Take a look at what you’re doing this week, or just today. Can you get rid (i.e. outsource) 80% and focus on just the 20% that is most effective?

You’ll feel less stressed, less overwhelmed and experience greater results. That seems worth it to me.

David

PS – The Let Your Millionaire Out Success System is a great place to start getting focused.

Ah Mondays! I used to hate Mondays. I dreaded the end of the weekend, but to ‘the grind.’ I wasn’t the only one. There is so much emotion around the day. Monday’s have inspired songs (“I don’t like Mondays“) and inspired others just because they’re a new beginning.

For me now, it’s all about inspiration and creation. Mondays is where I create and plan an Ideal Week. For those that have the Let Your Millionaire Out Success System, you know what I mean.

You can start living and Ideal Life right now, but you have to learn how to live an Ideal Day. And that’s harder than it may appear.

And for members of the Let Your Millionaire Out Success System, I’m hosting a live webinar this week to go over the system and teach you some more advanced ways to get the most out of it. Click here to login to your members area for all the details.

But, if you haven’t figured out what you love to do, or learned how to love what you’re doing, Mondays can suck. They can be a time of dread. Of going to work, or back to work in an effort that’s not paying off.

If that describes you, why?

Why are you wasting your time doing anything you don’t want to be doing?

Look, life is short. This is not a practice run. Stop trying to figure-it-all out. Stop working a horrible, boring or otherwise unsatisfying job just because you think you have to.

You have more options now than at anytime in history. Technology has made it so easy to reach across the world, while sitting in your pajamas.

Mondays can be YOUR time to feel inspired too. You just have to want to.

Let’s face it, some people get a rush out of being miserable. It’s their drug of choice. Don’t let that be you. There’s so much to be excited about.

And do you know what excites me? Helping you share your unique gifts. Because I know you have them.

Come join me on Wednesdays live training. All you have to do is be a member of the Let Your Millionaire Out Success System, and that’s easier than you think. Click here to learn more.

Now it’s time to create and live your ideal week.

I hope you join me on the live training this Wednesday, but if you can’t the repay will be posted in your members area. Check your email for the details.
