David Long Designs has created some truly impressive courtyard gardens as can be seen from these pictures. This area was originally used for parking in front of the house, we created a wall and a pair or ornamental gates and designed a scheme which would be low maintenance with indian stone.

The planting of mature shrubs created an instant garden. This work was carried out over a long weekend as a surprise for our client, which makes an idea gift idea. We can work with you for that very special garden make-over surprise gift. Our courtyard at our showrooms shows what can be achieved with planting and key pieces of garden ornaments. This property was purchased by a young executive, a substantial townhouse over three storeys. The condition was generally good, albeit dated. Our brief was to refurbish to present day standards and create an elegant living space.

In this formal Sitting Room we used bespoke upholstery, allowing a small sofa to be placed in the window bay. The slate greys and marine blues of the upholstery fabrics created a strong look, against the wenge coffee, side and console tables. Black feature display cabinets were sited either side of the chimney breast.

We produced an initial design proposal for this project, using very contemporary furniture, of glass and chrome, which did not suit him.

We reworked the scheme, to style with classic pieces, yet using sharp fabrics with an edge of sophistication. The main reconfiguration was to use one of the four bedrooms, to create a large Ensuite bathroom and the existing smaller bathroom was turned into a walk in wardrobe.

We retained the contemporary look in the kitchen area, with black high gloss units mixed with walnut base units and wall cupboards, which worked well against the brushed stainless steel of the Neff appliances, sink and imposing feature Blanco Baby tap, which he loved.

The master bathroom is terrific... We used the same pewter slate as the kitchen, for the floor tiles, together with black granite wall tiles, with feature black mosaics. Duravit cabineture was used and the real 'wow' was created by the 2 meter shower!

Where are we? A panoramic sweep of Los Angeles-at-night from atop Mulholland Drive sets room’s the glamorous mood. The vista includes 20th Century Fox, the movie studio where Shadley began his career as a scenic artist.

A custom quartz bar is built into the room, created with CaesarStone’s Concetto in hematite, a natural stone with black-and-silver deposits imported from Israel. In total, the bar weighs 1,100 pounds! It will take a crew of 8 and a forklift to put it in the AD Greenroom.

Fitting for the theme, the area rug is dubbed Mama Mia: an updated take on the shag rug by Karastan. The rug is crafted from SmartStrand 3GT Sorona, a new generation of carpet fiber engineered for outstanding stain resistance with softness.

The wallcovering is actually a favorite silk fabric of Shadley’s found at Kneedler|Fauchere Imports that has been paper-backed for wall usage.

Shadley shopped around town for vintage furniture and accessories, using rare antique dealers such as Fat Chance, NOHO Modern and Outside Downtown.

They were relocating from Europe and had consulted with property search companies to find a property that suited their needs

We worked initially in helping them assess the various properties that appealed to them and they finally decided upon this property which was being marketed by Humberts estate agents.

The house had been recently refurbished and extended by a property developer,which provided a blank canvass to work on.

The brief was to create elegant yet homely spaces for family life and entertaining.
We started to work on the interior design scheme for full furniture, soft furnishings and decoration for the whole property for their approval.

During this process we produced a schedule of work that included the replacement of 40 windows, decoration and then a full landscaping scheme.
We created a large terrace of indian stone with retaining wall in stone which was found in the grounds. Our teams of ground workers and landscaping consultants then carried out a superb turfing and landscaping scheme.
Working with these clients often 'remotely' we provided a fully managed project attending and overseeing all the work, externally and internally, reporting on progress, installation of all furnishings, ready for them to enjoy...

As one of three directors of Leeds-based audiovisual company Finite Solutions, Simon Mathieson is passionate about technology. Integrated sound systems, concealed HD televisions that are revealed at the press of a button and rooms with remote control panels instead of light switches are all part of his working life. So when the company decided to open a fully-furnished showhome, Simon jumped at the chance to live in the hi-tech house. “We were looking for a property we could refurbish and which looked grand enough to suit our company,” he says. “We found this a year-and-a-half ago and myself and my partners invested in it, but for me it’s a home.”

The house, in Yeadon, Leeds, dates back to the 1890s and originally belonged to the owner of a local mill.

When Simon and his business partners bought it,the building was structurally sound but parts of it needed restoring or replacing altogether. “All the exterior stone work was completely black because of the mills that were round here,” says Simon. “As soon as we stripped it off and had the walls repointed, it was like a ‘brand new’ old house!” Internally, the house features original Victorian cornicing, replaces and encaustic tile fooring in the entrance hall. “We knew we’d bought a period house and we wanted to keep it quite ornate, as it would have been when it was originally built, but we also wanted to combine that with really modern audiovisual equipment. It was important that we had traditional-looking rooms with hidden technology,” says Simon.

And when it comes to technology, the house has been kitted out from top to bottom with every gadget imaginable – including the latest HD televisions

After deciding where all the hi-tech equipment would go (or rather, be hidden) in every room, Simon and his partners enlisted the help of York-based interior design consultants David Long Designs, who chose the colour schemes, doors and furniture throughout the house. The result is a glamorous combination of traditional features with a few contemporary touches. Rustic wooden doors and relaxing colour schemes in the ground-foor rooms complement the home’s Victorian heritage, with the kitchen adding a modern twist. Upstairs, the cream, grey and black colour scheme continues but this time with plush cream carpets and decorative fabrics creating stylish bedrooms and further living rooms.

Projectors, recessed speakers and mood lighting – as well as a few surprises. In the sophisticated living room, large speakers on either side of the TV are disguised as pieces of art, and the dining room contains a projector screen which rises up from the ␣oor to transform the room into a boardroom. Simon’s favourite part of his new home, however, is the basement cinema room. Two rows of luxurious seating face a large projector screen, and the room features a sound system to rival that of the local multiplex, with acoustic panels and an audio diffuser enhancing the cinematic experience. “The cinema was a dream come true because we’ve been designing rooms like that for quite a while and I’ve always wanted one,” says Simon. “It’s absolutely perfect, I probably watch about three ␣lms a week down there – it’s better than going to the cinema!”

Although the house is used as an example of what Finite Solutions can do and is often visited by prospective clients, it is Simon’s home and he loves living in such a future-proof property. “Irrespective of the business, I think the house is awesome,” he says. “It’s got everything I would want it to have and the technology makes it very entertaining. When I have friends and family round there can be people in different rooms watching different ␣lms, also there’s one button to switch all the lights and technology off when you leave the home, which helps cut down on electricity bills.

It’s turned out exactly as we wanted it to; it’sperfect.” Living in a showhome isn’t always easy, however, as Simon explains: “It’s a double-edged sword.

On the one hand, it’s amazing because I love the technology and I love using it every day. The downside is that I never get any complete separation from work.”

Another potential problem is keeping the home clean and tidy for when people visit; the Finite Solutions team solved this by making sure there was a room visitors would never see. “There’s another basement room which we haven’t renovated to the same standard as the rest of the house,” explains Simon. “We’ve put lino on the ␣oors and a bar down there – so if we do ever have a more raucous party, we can go there and drink and spill things without worrying!”

So the pros far outweigh the cons, and Simon lives in a house worthy of a James Bond ␣lm, with a super-stylish interior and state-of-the-art gadgets adorning every room. His verdict? “I’m single and in my 20s so I’m very happy here!”Al

It was a double whammy celebration for The Devonshire Arms at our Food & Drink Awards 2010-2011 as the luxury North Yorkshire country hotel picked up not one but two prestigious titles. It scooped Hotel of the Year and Restaurant of the Year for the Burlington, one of its two highly acclaimed dining spaces. And it was in good company, with 11 further awards winging their way around the county to the likes of the Orchid in Harrogate (International Restaurant of the Year); James Mackenzie at the Pipe & Glass in South Dalton (Chef of the Year); the Black Swan at Oldstead (Dining Pub of the Year); and Le Langhe in York (Neighbourhood Restaurant of the Year). We have two design studios on both the ground and first floors. In the main show- room we work on putting together wonderful schemes often when clients visit us, wanting advice and help with pieces for their home, to single rooms where a piece of furniture can inspire them.

The main design studio is located on the first floor where we work with the latest technology which allows us to produce superb presentation packages, together with photorealistic visuals. We love to show people what we are working on, from the ideas stage, through the design process, the projects under construction to the finished home.

We have libraries of portfolios to show just what we have achieved. We can also give slideshows and dvd presentations on our plasma television, over a coffee, and clients never fail to be impressed with our case studies of projects which have been produced in beautiful water colour sketches.

We work extensively on architectural solutions for extensions, orangeries and remodelling projects and work closely with planning departments to quickly establish what can be achieved before embarking on the architectural work.

We have experience of Listed Buildings and work closely with Conservation to achieve the appropriate specification of works. Having worked tirelessly on the project, which we conclude with 3D visuals of just how the space will work to give confidence before committing to the project, we then love the finishes and create wonderful mood boards of our ideas, which complements the extensive design packages which we produce, together with full working drawings from kitchen design, bathroom design to every room of the house.

The Yorkshire Life Food & Drink Awards 2010-2011 celebrated the county’s top talent last night handing out awards and accolades to the best in fine dining and hospitality.

More than 250 people filled Aspire, Leeds, for the awards gala evening with special guest Bob Cotton of Hospitality Action and former chief executive of the British Hospitality Association.

Smart Home and Cinema using NuVo, Rako, Pronto & AVAtrix – North Yorkshire

The Intelligent Home Today - By Inspire AV.

The initial brief from the client for this large detached family home was to integrate a multi room audio system, home cinema, lighting control and a high definition video system. The property was being completely renovated from the brickwork up, so the opportunity to add the system infrastructure was at first-fix stage. The finished product was eight zones of audio, six zones of high definition TV (Sky HD & Blu Ray) eight zones of standard definition TV (Sky +) an automated home cinema featuring an electric screen and projector lift and lighting control across the property.

Multi room audio system

Being music lovers with a large collection of CD’s and digital music, we chose the Nuvo Grand Concerto system, a six source, eight zone audio distribution system with a Nuvo M3 160GB Music Server, Nuvo T2 DAB Tuner Nuvo iPod dock located in the kitchen. Once placed in the dock, the music stored on the iPhone or iPod Touch becomes available on the system as another source from any one of the zones where a keypad is located. We also incorporated the family’s existing Bang & Olufsen Beosound9000 CD player which was added to the Nuvo Grand Concerto as another audio source meaning that it can also be played across their home. Discreet in ceiling speakers from Elan Home Systems were installed to provide music which fills each room.

Automated home cinema

The family wanted to have a special room which was cosy in winter and could be used for a number of purposes. We designed a room ideal for watching TV, reading or relaxing and at the push of a button, the lights dim, the curtains close, the projector drops from the ceiling and the projector screen falls into place … all at the touch of a button. We used the award winning Panasonic PT-AE3000 LCD projector to provide the stunning image along with an Onkyo 5.1, SpeakerCraft in-wall & in-ceiling speakers, Bang & Olufsen free standing speakers and an Audio Pro subwoofer for the 5.1 surround sound.
To control the lighting, a Lutron dimming control was installed so that lighting scenes can be created depending on the intended use of the room. A motorised projector drop and screen were installed to enable the equipment to be out of the way when not in use. We installed and programmed a Philips Pronto 9300, giving full wireless control of audio, video (inc. Sky HD and Blu Ray), lighting, blinds, screen and projector drop meaning that one device could control all the room equipment.

Lighting control

Our brief was to control the lighting across a number of zones with multiple circuits so that scenes and moods could be easily created. The chose the Rako Lighting Control solution as a simple way for the family to achieve this. Once installed, time was spent with the family creating the scenes to enable them to get the most from their system.
High definition video system
To distribute the high definition video system around the house, we used the Audio Authority AVAtrix, a system which routes the HD signal from up to six sources to up to six zones or rooms. Via a Philips remote control, the family are able to switch on their TV and watch Sky, Sky HD or a Blu Ray film from any one of the designated rooms.

Whole house control from the kitchen

The kitchen features a 6 inch TSP6L Creston control touch screen to control all the technologies in the home, including heating, lighting, CCTV and gate entry control as well as the 42” plasma. When a visitor buzzes the main entrance gates the CCTV camera image pops up on the screen, and the guest can be greeted using the two way intercom system on the panel.

Kitchen mood lighting

Included in the room is mood lighting control which adjusts the different lighting such as the spots in the ceiling, the LED lighting around the units, the dropped pendant lights and the fluorescent utility lighting depending on whether you are cooking, entertaining, or just watching TV.

Cinema ready to go..

The controls even features a special button called “prepare cinema room” that fires up the projector, amps, lights and air con in the main cinema room so it’s ready to use when you walk downstairs. When leaving the house a simple press on the “all off" button turns all the lights in the house off as well as all the TVs and speakers throughout the home, thus saving time and electricity.

Music in the garden

A pair of Bowers and Wilkins WM4 weatherproof speakers provide music outside quiet enough for when reading in the sun, and loud enough to turn up for parties and barbeques. A Sonos wireless controller allows you to browse through all the stored music on the central music server, from either lying back on the deckchair or even in the hot tub. The Sonos can also be linked through to the rest of the house when in party mode, so the same music plays as you move from inside to outside.

Whole house lighting control
Rako lighting control is installed throughout the property and provides the following benefits:

Environmental and cost saving benefits – a simple “all off switch” by the front door, as well as in the master bedroom allows all the lights to be turned off with one button press. This makes saving electricity easy, as no lights will be forgotten when going to bed, or leaving the house. Also running lights below 100% brightness using preset lighting “scenes” significantly increases lamp life and reduces electricity usage.

Security - The lighting system learns the day-to-day lighting usage. Then selecting 'holiday mode' before going away plays back this usage pattern over the following weeks giving the impression that people are still at home. The lights can also be triggered to switch on key rooms when someone buzzes the entrance gate, and then turn off after a period of time, again staging that someone is in the property. The lights are linked to the alarm system, so when the alarm is triggered all the lights in the house turn on and off, alerting passers by that there are possible intruders.

Convenience - Turning all the lights off with a single button when leaving the property saves time and hassle. In a four storey property of this size, this feature is particularly useful and also helps save on electricity bills.

Architectural – Many of the rooms feature “mood lighting”. This creates distinct lighting moods within each room by mixing different levels of varying light types, for example lamps, wall sconces, spots, feature lighting, or colour changing LEDs. Different moods can be easily selected using the simple lighting switches on the wall, with 4 different scenes as well as a master dimmer.

Exterior lighting
The main flood lighting that illuminates the front of the house are sodium uplighters. This lighting is activated by a timeclock, so it comes on automatically at dusk whatever the time of the year. This is a useful feature as it saves energy by not having the outside lights on in the summer when it's light and avoids the hassle of regularly needing to change the timer settings at different times of the year.

Why employ an Interior Designer?

Mary and Ian were a couple without a clear idea of what they wanted from a new home, but they were very sure of what they didn’t want and that was a traditional family house.

They had already had that experience when raising their children, but now that the children had flown the nest it was time for a change. Their previous property had been a restoration project and had strengthened the couple’s long-held ambition to build their own home from scratch. Upon hearing of a suitable plot in the same area of York in which they were already living – and of which they had grown extremely fond – decisive action was taken and they quickly snapped it up. The stone-clad Edwardian villa stood on a street of similar Arts & Crafts style houses and Mary and Ian were very keen to create a house which was modern in style, but would still fit in with its surroundings. The award-winning team at Crease Strickland Parkins Architects was brought in to design a stylish and contemporary home. After a terribly civilised initial consultation over a pub-lunch, plans were drawn up for a property which from the front would fit in with the more traditional aesthetic of the area, but which inside and from the back, was the open- plan home of Ian and Mary’s dreams. The house was built by Repair & Restoration Ltd – based in Malton – who ensured that with its high ceilings and abundance of natural light any initial expectations of the architect’s plans were met, if not exceeded.

When it came to the interior, Ian and Mary were just as selective in choosing their team, opting for York’s award-winning firm, David Long Designs. Months of meetings and painstaking sourcing of materials followed and left the house as stunning inside as it is outside. The floors

and walls are a chic combination of walnut and cream and provide a blank canvas for the striking, colourful accent pieces. The kitchen floor is highly polished cream stone, and the units are for the most part a similarly neutral shade, with a walnut carcase. There is one row of units’ however, which lift the feel of the whole room with their vivid scarlet frontage, crafted from finest Serigraph glass and etched with an abstract black floral design. The pattern is deliberately mirrored with a custom-made door, made from cast-glass. The shade of the units is mirrored in the splashback and then again in the living room’s fitted cupboards which are lacquered in the same hue.

So pleased were Mary and Ian with this injection of vibrancy, that they decided to carry it on throughout their home, coupled with the occasional touch of lime green to pick out the high quality furniture. This choice was born out of their reluctance to succumb to the impersonal minimalism which all too often goes hand in hand with cutting-edge design. David and his team chose softer, warmer fabrics to upholster furniture in a bid to make them seem more welcoming. In the master bedroom in particular, an architectural headboard is softened through the use of a beautiful floral fabric, perfectly marrying the accent colours of red and green in the window dressing and covering for matching scatter pillows.

Light in its various forms is a strong theme in the house and was clearly important to the over-all design. The south-facing glass walls flood the rooms with sunlight during the day and as the nights draw in, the house’s spectacular light-fittings come into their own. The double-height ceilings have allowed for the installation of two chandeliers, which combine droplets of Murano glass suspended on thin wires to create the illusion of balls of brightly coloured light floating in mid-air. In the master bedroom the light-fitting is equally as striking, if

on a smaller scale. Like a tangle of wild flowers, red buds emerge from a twisted mass of wires. When switched on, the buds open slightly and gently rotate as if brought suddenly to life.

The juxtaposition of the mid-century vogue for straight, clean and almost severe lines with the modern trend for curvature is also a recurring theme. High, geometric windows sit alongside a curved staircase and a boxy corner sofa is offset by the fluid lines of walnut armchairs and circular glass table. The opposing styles could easily clash, but in this case they slot together perfectly to create a soft and welcoming space. The whole house is a mass of stylistic contradictions; the classic and the contemporary, the neutral and the brightly coloured, the linear and the curved. But it all combines to produce a chic, immaculately finished home which is perfectly suited to Ian and Mary’s tastes and fulfills a dream they have held for decades.
