Final dimensions of the MOD game Deluxe Box! It will accommodate all the cards in tuck boxes with room for future expansions (top picture; this is how they come. The box at far right will be just an empty space-filler) OR the full set of cards in sleeves (bottom picture), at your discretion. The dividers are removable.

This thing is now roughly TWICE as big as we first planned, and with all the cards in it, weighs over SEVEN POUNDS

This has been bugging me forever, and I finally figured it out. If you have a Wacom Intuos tablet (or maybe other types too) and the tracking seems off — drawing in a diagonal direction creates wavy or undulating lines, like the blue lines above — here’s how to fix it.

Take off the fingertip button; underneath, in the center, is a little tiny screw. Use a jeweler’s or eyeglass repair screwdriver to turn it. Just turn it one way or the other until it fixes the problem. I don’t think it’s strictly geared to the turning: turning it back where it was didn’t make it worse again. But the action of turning seems to have fixed it.

But for real, this video (and yesterday’s) make me want to chuck it all and apprentice myself to one of these old-school operations and get my hands dirty some more.

When I worked in an art supply store in high school, I used to sell 1Shot enamel sign paint. One day, the crusty old owner of the store made me sit down and hand-letter and paint a sign on canvas. I had to scrub off the paint and re-do it maybe four or five times before he eventually said it was good enough (and it wasn’t). Watching this video makes me want to find the best sign painters around and hire them to adorn everything in my world.

I once heard someone say “I resent anything functional that isn’t beautiful.” At the time I thought her haughty, because I don’t really care, for example, what my spoons or forks look like. But if we have to be bombarded with text all day every day anyway, I absolutely do wish it were all lovely.

I think being exposed to nothing but ugly or inartful text probably makes you cranky, like having your refrigerator constantly humming in a minor key.

Hmm. Trying to combine the elements that people liked best about both approaches. I am also open to the possibility that this concept is barking up the wrong tree entirely, but I’m having fun messing around with it!

I think I prefer the first design, it really draws the eye! Plus, the blue colouring connects to the first book cover :)

Yeah, I’m trying to keep the design family somewhat connected to the books, with the teal color palette. This second one I think is prettier, but is also darker/murkier overall. A CHALLENGE TO BE SURE

Here’s what I’m working on today. The hardcover’s nearly out of print so it’s time to do a paperback!

I'm not new to Comicon type stuff, but I am new to this magical activity of "getting awesome drawing types to draw quick stuff for you" that apparently happens. I'm afraid of looking super dumb - can you please explain the etiquette for such an activity? By the way, see you this weekend at ECCC! Yay!

It depends on the artist and whether they have a posted sketch policy! Some artists charge a certain amount, others don’t. If it’s posted, you can just say “Hi! Can I get a sketch?” and point at the sign, and if you have a sketchbook, open it to a blank page and hand it over.

If it’s not posted or you’re not sure, you can say “Are you doing sketches?” The answer will either be yes or no! It might be “Yup, I’m doing headshots for $10” or “Yeah, happy to!” or whatever. And if you’re game, then say “Great, I’d love to get one!” You don’t have to bring your own sketchbook, but if you do, hand it over so the artist doesn’t start looking for paper.

Every artist is different – some choose not to do sketches, others have a sign-up sheet or a queue, others have a tip jar. Some (like me) have weird constructs like Roll-a-Sketch (actually, that might just be me). But the short answer is, usually, if a rate sheet isn’t posted, a quick “Are you doing sketches?” will let you know what you need to know!
