Things have slowed down just enough that I could sift through my pictures to post some images from the M(i)(A)cro: A Contemporary Drawing Exhibition. In the next few weeks I’m going to try and get all the pictures up on this site that I can because, since the exhibition is in Massachusetts, many of you were unable to go check it out. So, I’m going to try my best to give you the best virtual experience I can. We have received an unbelievable amount of positive feedback and congratulations on the success of this exhibition. Overall it turned out much better than I expected. If you get the chance before May 20th, please go check it out — much hard work went into it and the show is definitely meant to be experienced in person.

This series of photos documents the installation of my largest wall drawing/painting to-date, titled I.C.B.M. (I’m ok, you’re so-so). The dimensions are approximately 27 feet wide by 10 feet tall. It is painted directly on the wall from a projected image of a smaller pen & ink drawing that I did (which is also part of the exhibition). It is Part 2 of a 3-part series (more on that in a later post). You will see in the images below that I had some help. Yes, for the first time I had two local artists help me install the wall drawing — it would have been impossible for me to have done it all by myself in the limited 4 days that I was in town installing the exhibition. So, thanks to Sofya Belinskaya and Raleigh Strott for their much appreciated assistance (click on their names to traverse to their respective websites).

The last image is credited to photographer Peter Vanderwarker who was generous enough to professionally document the entire exhibition. More of his photos to come in the next few posts.

While I was up visiting the Dowd Gallery for the Innovations exhibition, I also gave a lecture/presentation on ‘The Importance of Process’ in my artwork and that of others. I gave a brief historical run-down of Process Art and how other artists throughout the Twentieth Century employed a deliberate process in the creation of their artwork and how evidence of that process is present in the finished work. I then talked about the same with regards to my own artwork. Overall, there were a little over 30 attendees and I’ve received many positive responses to the talk. Here are a few pictures:

The second piece of artwork that I had in the Innovations exhibition, Mapping the Probability of Archetypical Configurations of Elementary Particles in Thought-Space, did not appear in the Dowd Gallery, but instead was displaying in its proper setting — an institutional building dedicated to science — in Bowers Hall on the campus of SUNY Cortland (a few buildings away from the Dowd Gallery). Again, thanks to Bryan Thomas for making this happen — as I know, firsthand, how difficult it is to get art displayed in a science building. It also seemed that where it was displayed, on the main floor of Bowers Hall, received much foot traffic.

Here is part of the original proposal essay I submitted with my images for this exhibition that explains this poster/installation/intervention:

“Does altering the context (specifically the complete environment) in which we see art transform or strengthen its meaning? Mapping the Probability of Archetypical Configurations of Elementary Particles in Thought-Space, 2009*, is meant to be displayed in a building dedicated to science in an educational institution. This intervention questions the reception and hence, the meaning, of the artwork when it is taken out of the context in which we normally see art. I am questioning the notion of whether the gallery is the ideal space in which to convey meaning.”

Check out the below pics of Transmeanderation Helix from the Innovations exhibition at the Dowd Gallery. I was very pleased to discover that Bryan and Jaroslava (from the Dowd Gallery) had made my work the highlight of the exhibition by placing it prominently at the beginning of the exhibition and using it for all of the promotional items. I also gave a presentation about the process I undergo to create some of my work, especially the piece that appeared in the show. I believe the presentation/lecture was well received. Bryan and Jaroslava took me out for dinner afterwards and I had a great time — a great experience all around!

Also, I would like to thank Bryan and Jaroslava for installing my drawing so professionally and so beautifully. This is the best it has ever looked in a gallery before!
